By understanding existence as innately coexistence, we are asked to contemplate how ecologies might be better understood, better conserved and made flourish.

In Chapter 6 of IP46, vested property rights are recognised to include “copyright and other intellectual property rights”. For the purposes of the Inquiry “the ALRC [identified it was to consider] ‘vested property rights’ more in its broad, rhetorical sense, than in its technical sense, in which there are distinct shades of meaning of ‘vested’”. However, the Interim Report states that any ‘vested right’ of users of copyright works “has not been identified yet in law”. It is assumed from this that the ALRC is proposing not to further consider the contracting out of the fair dealing exceptions. In light of its prior stated purpose it is submitted this is not appropriate...

Click functionalization of methacrylate-based hydrogels and their cellular response

Methacrylate-based hydrogels, such as homo- and copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), have demonstrated significant potential for use in biomedical applications. However, many of these hydrogels tend to resist cell attachment and growth at their surfaces, which can be detrimental for certain applications. In this article, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was copolymerized with HEMA to generate gels functionalized with epoxide groups. The epoxides were then functionalized by two sequential click reactions, namely, nucleophilic ring opening of epoxides with sodium azide and then coupling of small molecules and peptides via Huisgen's copper catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azides with alkynes. Using this strategy it was possible to control the degree of functionalization by controlling the feed ratio of monomers during polymerization. In vitro cell culture of human retinal pigment epithelial cell line (ARPE-19) with the hydrogels showed improved cell adhesion, growth and proliferation for hydrogels that were functionalized with a peptide containing the RGD sequence. In addition, the cell attachment progressively decreased with increasing densities of the RGD containing peptide. In summary, a facile methodology has been presented that gives rise to hydrogels with controlled degrees of functionality, such that the cell response is directly related to the levels and nature of that functionality.

International Design Competition for Qatar Psychiatric Hospital. The scheme for the Al Wakra Respite and Recovery Centre delivers on an all-in attitude toward evidence-based design. It sets new benchmarks in so many ways: the way it allows excellent separation between patient cohorts without unnecessary or visible restrictions; the way it allows sharing of most of the clinical kit and spaces; the way services reticulation and facilities management takes place without compromising security and safety; the ways It abandons the institutional axioms that are still so ubiquitous elsewhere, so it can appear as the friendly, welcoming and wholesome; the way it allows incredible flexibility to allow changes or flexion on the fly; the way it has such ‘good bones’ for more structural changes as the future unfolds. But most importantly, the scheme will be exemplary in the way the building itself plays a role in promoting the recovery and mental well-being of its residents. Like no other, the Centre will rise to the challenges of supporting and inspiring an exemplary mental health service and promote the well-being of the patients. The 160 bed scheme allows for 43,000m2 of landscape, packed with wholesome things to do and experience. The Aspire zone even has stables and a falconry, both to celebrate the love that Qatari people have for horses and birds.

The rights of individuals to self-determination and participation in social, political and economic life are recognised and supported by Articles 1, 3 and 25 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights 1966.4 Article 1 of the United Nations’ Human Rights Council’s Resolution on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights on the Internet of July 2012 confirms individuals have the same rights online as offline. Access to the internet is essential and as such the UN: Calls upon all States to promote and facilitate access to the Internet and international cooperation aimed at the development of media and information and communications facilities in all countries (Article 3) Accordingly, access to the internet per se is a fundamental human right, which requires direct State recognition and support.5 The obligations of the State to ensure its citizens are able, and are enabled, to access the internet, are not matters that should be delegated to commercial parties. Quite simply – access to the internet, and high-speed broadband, by whatever means are “essential services” and therefore “should be treated as any other utility service”...

ACE research briefing paper 009: Global Entrepreneurship Monitor: GEM Australia - 2014 National Report

Most policymakers and academics agree that entrepreneurship is critical to the development and wellbeing of society. Entrepreneurs create jobs. They drive and shape innovation, thereby speeding up structural changes in the economy. By introducing new competition they contribute indirectly to increased productivity and overall economic activity. Entrepreneurship is thus a catalyst for economic growth and national competitiveness. In 2014, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM)conducted its 15th annual survey of the rate and profile of entrepreneurial activity around the globe. GEM interviewed over 206,000 adults aged 18–64 in 70 economies, spanning diverse geographies and a range of development levels. The Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Research (ACE) participated as the Australian GEM partner, surveying 2,177 Australian adults. This report provides a summary of entrepreneurship in Australia as measured by GEM, and benchmarks this against other countries. We compare the level of entrepreneurship in the population across different phases of the entrepreneurial process, and provide a profile of some key characteristics of entrepreneurs and the businesses they are starting. We also report on some of the institutional and framework conditions that support entrepreneurship.

Impacts of sodic soil amelioration on deep drainage

Groundwater tables are rising beneath irrigated fields in some areas of the Lower Burdekin in North Queensland, Australia. The soils where this occurs are predominantly sodic clay soils with low hydraulic conductivities. Many of these soils have been treated by applying gypsum or by increasing the salinity of irrigation water by mixing saline groundwater with fresh river water. While the purpose of these treatments is to increase infiltration into the surface soils and improve productivity of the root zone, it is thought that the treatments may have altered the soil hydraulic properties well below the root zone leading to increased groundwater recharge and rising water tables. In this paper we discuss the use of column experiments and HYDRUS modelling, with major ion reaction and transport and soil water chemistry-dependent hydraulic conductivity, to assess the likely depth, magnitude and timing of the impacts of surface soil amelioration on soil hydraulic properties below the root zone and hence groundwater recharge. In the experiments, columns of sodic clays from the Lower Burdekin were leached for extended periods of time with either gypsum solutions or mixed cation salt solutions and change s in hydraulic conductivity were measured. Leaching with a gypsum solution for an extended time period, until the flow rate stabilised, resulted in an approximately twenty fold increase in the hydraulic conductivity when compared with a low salinity, mixed cation solution. HYDRUS modelling was used to high light the role of those factors which might influence the impacts of soil treatment, particularly at depth, including the large amounts of rain during the relatively short wet season and the presence of thick low permeability clay layers.

Impact of mirid (Creontiades spp.) (Hemiptera: Miridae) pest management on Helicoverpa spp. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) outbreaks: The case for conserving natural enemies

Creontiades spp. (Hemiptera: Miridae) are sucking pests that attack buds, flowers and young pods in mungbeans, Vigna radiata (L.), causing these structures subsequently to abort. If left uncontrolled, mirids can cause 25-50% yield loss. Traditional industry practice has involved prophylactic applications of dimethoate to control mirids at budding and again a week later. The present trial was initiated to highlight the dangers of such a practice, in particular the risk of a subsequent Helicoverpa spp. lepidopteran pest outbreak. A single application of dimethoate halved the population of important natural enemies of Helicoverpa spp., and caused an above-threshold outbreak of Helicoverpa spp. within 11 days. This shows that even a moderate (e.g. 50%) reduction in natural enemies may be sufficient to increase Helicoverpa spp. populations in mungbeans. As a result, prophylactic sprays should not be used for the control of mirids in mungbeans, and dimethoate should be applied only when mirids are above the economic threshold. Indoxacarb was also tested to establish its effect on Helicoverpa spp., mirids and natural enemies. Indoxacarb showed potential for Helicoverpa spp. control and suppression of mirids and had little impact on natural enemies.

Konstteoretikern och livet : Mikael Lybecks Breven till Cecilia i nietzscheansk belysning

I avhandlingen analyseras den finlandssvenska författaren Mikael Lybecks (1864-1925) verk Breven till Cecilia. Denna brevroman hör till Lybecks senare produktion och utkom 1920. Verket har kommit att betraktas som en klassiker inom den finlandssvenska litteraturen. Av författarensövriga produktion är det strängt taget endast Tomas Indal (1911) som haft en jämförbar genomslagskraft. Trots detta har romanen inte varit föremål för en enda mer omfattande studie. l sin Lybeckbiografi relaterar Erik Kihlman i första hand verket till det biografiska och till samhällssituationen vid tiden för romanens tillkomst. Vetenskapen, konsten och livet bildar tillsammans den triangel som utgör romanens stomme. Antiken är starkt närvarande i romanen och med begrepp som härrör från denna era kan man tala om det sokratiska, det apollinska och det dionysiska. Detta är begrepp som Friedrich Nietzsche utgår i från i sitt ungdomsverk Tragedins födelse (Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik) från 1872. Nietzsches vetenskapskritik och hans syn på den högsta konsten som ett brödraförbund mellan Dionysos och Apollon står i förvånansvärt hög grad i samklang med den övergripande tematiken i Lybecks verk. När Nietzsche därtill framhäver musiken som grunden förall konst får många inslag i romanen sin förklaring. l Breven till Cecilia skildras en vändpunkt i huvudpersonen Sven Ingelets liv. Därför ligger tyngdpunkten i den tematiska analysen vid det som gör att verket kan betraktas som en utvecklingsroman. Även om romanen skildrar en tidsperiod på endast ett och ett halvt år så hinnerhuvudpersonen ändå undergå en betydande personlighetsförändring. Nietzsches Tragedinsfödelse med dess ovannämnda grundläggande begrepp lämpar sig ypperligt som referensram för en analys av denna förändring. Avhandlingen har också strukturerats utgående från de nietzscheanska begreppen sokratiskt, dionysiskt och apollinskt vilka alltså återspeglar huvudpersonens utvecklingsfaser. Från att ha varit en renodlad förnuftsmänniska väcks Sven Ingelet genom ett kortvarigt kärleksförhållande till det dionysiska med allt vad det innebär av känslorus och lidande. Att Ingelet nästan helt uppgått i sin roll som konstteoretiker har medfört att hans förhållningssätt till omvärlden utmärks av intresselös betraktelse. Till följd av sin viljesvaghet och bristande handlingskraft måstehan försöka behålla sin älskades gunst genom magiska pseudohandlingar. Detta leder in Ingelet i myternas värld. Hans verklighetsuppfattning får andra dimensioner än den vetenskapliga. Det dionysiska uppvaknandet medför tillsammans med det efterföljande brevskrivandet att Ingeletnår fram till en självkännedom och upphör att vara en främling i tillvaron. Ingelet utvecklar ocksåen ny konstsyn som förutsätter ett samband mellan konsten och livet. Detta apollinska utvecklingsstadium kännetecknas också av sanningsförmedlande drömmar, och av en tilltagande resignation som till slut utmynnar i ett självmord. The Statutory Defence(s) of 'peer professional opinion'

In the wake of the GFC and with ever increasing consumer-protection-related laws, clients are more aware of their rights and your obligations as a professional valuer. They also are more likely to take legal action if, as a result of their reliance on a valuation, they suffer a financial loss. In some Australian jurisdictions, in response to a claim of negligence, the professional valuer may be able to raise a professional practice defence under civil liability legislation. This article considers the nature of this statutory defence, what is required to rely upon it and in which jurisdictions it applies.

Soliciting additional concerns in the primary care consultation and the utility of a brief communication intervention to aid solicitation: A qualitative study

Objective To investigate the perspectives of general practitioners (GPs) on the practice of soliciting additional concerns (ACs) and the acceptability and utility of two brief interventions (prompts) designed to aid the solicitation. Methods Eighteen GPs participating in a feasibility randomised controlled trial were interviewed. Interviews were semi-structured and audio-recorded. Data were analysed using a Framework Approach. Results Participants perceived eliciting ACs as important for: reducing the need for multiple visits, identifying serious illness early, and increasing patient and GP satisfaction. GPs found the prompts easy to use and some continued their use after the study had ended to aid time management. Others noted similarities between the intervention and their usual practice. Nevertheless, soliciting ACs in every consultation was not unanimously supported. Conclusion The prompts were acceptable to GPs within a trial context, but there was disagreement as to whether ACs should be solicited routinely. Some GPs considered the intervention to aid their prioritisation efficiency within consultations. Practice implications Some GPs will find prompts which encourage ACs to be solicited early in the consultation enable them to better organise priorities and manage time-limited consultations more effectively.
