Increased seawater pCO2, and in turn 'ocean acidification' (OA), is predicted to profoundly impact marine ecosystem diversity and function this century. Much research has already focussed on calcifying reef-forming corals (Class: Anthozoa) that appear particularly susceptible to OA via reduced net calcification. However, here we show that OA-like conditions can simultaneously enhance the ecological success of non-calcifying anthozoans, which not only play key ecological and biogeochemical roles in present day benthic ecosystems but also represent a model organism should calcifying anthozoans exist as less calcified (soft-bodied) forms in future oceans. Increased growth (abundance and size) of the sea anemone (Anemonia viridis) population was observed along a natural CO2 gradient at Vulcano, Italy. Both gross photosynthesis (PG) and respiration (R) increased with pCO2 indicating that the increased growth was, at least in part, fuelled by bottom up (CO2 stimulation) of metabolism. The increase of PG outweighed that of R and the genetic identity of the symbiotic microalgae (Symbiodinium spp.) remained unchanged (type A19) suggesting proximity to the vent site relieved CO2 limitation of the anemones' symbiotic microalgal population. Our observations of enhanced productivity with pCO2, which are consistent with previous reports for some calcifying corals, convey an increase in fitness that may enable non-calcifying anthozoans to thrive in future environments, i.e. higher seawater pCO2. Understanding how CO2-enhanced productivity of non- (and less-) calcifying anthozoans applies more widely to tropical ecosystems is a priority where such organisms can dominate benthic ecosystems, in particular following localized anthropogenic stress.

This is the first study to determine vertical distribution patterns of sympagic meiofauna, including metazoans, protozoans and eggs >20 µm, in the Amundsen Gulf (southeastern Beaufort Sea, Arctic). Full sea-ice cores were sampled from mid of March to end of May 2008 (Circumpolar Flaw Lead system study). Investigations were performed on first-year ice from three pack- and three fast-ice stations. Additionally, 5-cm bottom-ice sections were sampled at 13 pack-ice and 5 fast-ice stations. The metazoan community was composed of nematodes, rotifers, copepods, copepod nauplii, platyhelminthes and a few rare taxa such as mollusks, cnidarians and nemerteans. High numbers of eggs, between 50 and 2,188 eggs/L, particularly of nematodes and copepods, were present in the ice. Investigations revealed also eggs of the pelagic species Calanus hyperboreus and Sagitta spp. within the ice, so that further research is needed to clarify whether more organisms than expected might use this habitat as a reproduction ground. Many different morphotypes of protozoans were observed in the samples, especially ciliates of the order Euplotida. The highest abundance was always found in the lowermost 5 cm of the ice cores, nevertheless sympagic meiofauna was not restricted to that part of the ice. Integrated meiofauna abundance ranged between 41 and 4,738 x 10**2 Ind/m**2 and was highest in the fast ice in early May. Differences between pack and fast ice in terms of integrated meiofauna communities and vertical distribution were not significant, while the analysis of the bottom-ice sections indicated both a temporal development and ice-type-specific differences.

The measurement of short-lived 223Ra often involves a second measurement for supported activities, which represents 227Ac in the sample. Here we exploit this fact, presenting a set of 284 values on the oceanic distribution of 227Ac, which was collected when analyzing water samples for short-lived radium isotopes by the radium delayed coincidence counting system. The present work compiles 227Ac data from coastal regions all over the northern hemisphere, including values from ground water, from estuaries and lagoons, and from marine end-members. Deep-sea samples from a continental slope off Puerto Rico and from an active vent site near Hawaii complete the overview of 227Ac near its potential sources. The average 227Ac activities of nearshore marine end-members range from 0.4 dpm/m**3 at the Gulf of Mexico to 3.0 dpm m? 3 in the coastal waters of the Korean Strait. In analogy to 228Ra, we find the extension of adjacent shelf regions to play a substantial role for 227Ac activities, although less pronounced than for radium, due to its weaker shelf source. Based on previously published values, we calculate an open ocean 227Ac inventory of 1.35 * 1018 dpm 227Acex in the ocean, which corresponds to 37 moles, or 8.4 kg. This implies a flux of 127 dpm/m**2/y from the deep-sea floor. For the shelf regions, we obtain a global inventory of 227Ac of 4.5 * 10**15 dpm, which cannot be converted directly into a flux value, as the regional loss term of 227Ac to the open ocean would have to be included. Ac has so far been considered to behave similarly to Ra in the marine environment, with the exception of a strong Ac source in the deep-sea due to 231Paex. Here, we present evidence of geochemical differences between Ac, which is retained in a warm vent system, and Ra, which is readily released [Moore, W.S., Ussler, W. and Paull, C.K., 2008-this issue. Short-lived radium isotopes in the Hawaiian margin: Evidence for large fluid fluxes through the Puna Ridge. Marine Chemistry]. Another potential mechanism of producing deviations in 227Ac/228Ra and daughter isotope ratios from the expected production value of lithogenic material is observed at reducing environments, where enrichment in uranium may occur. The presented data here may serve as a reference for including 227Ac in circulation models, and the overview provides values for some end-members that contribute to the global Ac distribution.

This publication considers data on aquatic anomalies (hydrothermal plumes) in the areas of 26° and 29°N of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). Mass of hydrothermal iron supply and intensity of iron sedimentation onto the bottom were estimated by means of sediment traps. It was found that the plume of the TAG hydrothermal vent 6 km**3 in volume contained about 67 tons of particulate Fe; the plume of the Broken Spur field (up to 8.24 km**3 in volume) contained 23.5 tons of particulate Fe or less because of its lower concentration. Data on sediment matter fluxes showed that 0.3-0.5% of hydrothermal iron was precipitated immediately from the neutrally buoyant plume onto the bottom; the bulk of iron was dissipated into environment. From dimensions of the plumes, flow dynamics, iron concentrations in the plumes, and amounts of iron supplied by hydrothermal vents, it was found that resident time of the plumes considered was from 5 to 10 days.
