The effect of nonmagnetic Ti4+ substitution for Mn4+ on magnetic ordering of La1-xPbxMn1-yTiyO3 (x = 0.15,0.26, and 0.4; 0 less than or equal to y less than or equal to x )has been studied. The ferromagnetic transition temperature and the magnetization decrease with increasing amount of titanium. Complete substitution of Mn4+ by Ti4+, for x = y, excludes the Mn3+-O-Mn4+ double exchange. However, these compounds still show ferromagnetism if the dilution of the Mn sublattice by Ti is small enough (y less than or equal to 0.2). This ferromagnetism probably originates from a ferromagnetic Mn3+-O-Mn3+ superexchange. A thorough study of magnetic properties including AC magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, temperature dependence of coercivity and relaxation of remanent magnetization has been carried out and gives evidence of cluster spin glass behaviour for La0.6Pb0.4Mn0.6Ti0.4O3. Oxides of the families Ba3ZnTa2-xNbxO9 and Ba3MgTa2-xNbxO9 were obtained by the solid state reaction route at 1573 K and were found to crystallize in the disordered (cubic) perovskite structure. In Ba3ZnTa2-xNbXO9 and Ba3MgTa2-xNbxO9 the entire range (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1) of solid solutions could be synthesized. The dielectric constant decreases with increase in frequency for all compositions in the range 40 Hz to 100 kHz (epsilon (r) varies from 16 to 22). The dielectric loss (D) shows a broad maximum for both Ba3ZnTa2-xNbxO9 and Ba3MgTa2-xNbxO9. The maxima is centered around 2 kHz in the former and near 10 kHz in the latter. CaSiO3 : Dy3+ (1-5 mol. %) nanophosphors were synthesized by a simple low-temperature solution combustion method. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that the phosphors are crystalline and can be indexed to a monoclinic phase. Scanning electron micrographs exhibited faceted plates and angular crystals of different sizes with a porous nature. Photoluminescence properties of the Dy3+-doped CaSiO3 phosphors were observed and analyzed. Emission peaks at 483, 573 and 610 nm corresponding to Dy3+ were assigned as F-4(9/2)-> H-6(15/2), F-4(9/2) -> H-6(13/2) and F-4(9/2) -> H-6(11/2) transitions, respectively, and dominated by the Dy3+ F-4(9/2) -> H-6(13/2) hyperfine transition. Experimental results revealed that the luminescence intensity was affected by both heat treatment and the concentration of Dy3+ (1-5 mol. %) in the CaSiO3 host. Optimal luminescence conditions were achieved when the concentration of Dy3+ was 2 mol. %. UV-visible absorption features an intense band at 240 nm, which corresponds to an O-Si ligand-to-metal charge transfer band in the SiO32- group. The optical energy band gap for the undoped sample was found to be 5.45 eV, whereas in Dy3+-doped phosphors it varies in the range 5.49-5.65 eV. The optical energy gap widens with increase of Dy3+ ion dopant.

Polarizabilities and Hyperpolarizabilities of conjugated organic chains are calculated using correlated model Hamiltonians. While correlations reduce the Polarizabilities and extend the range of linear response, the Hyperpolarizabilities essentially are unaffected by the same. This explains the apparently large Hyperpolarizabilities of conjugated electronic systems.

The thermodynamic activity of sodium oxide (Na2O) in the Nasicon solid solution series, Na1+xZr2SixO12, has been measured in the temperature range 700–1100 K using solid state galvanic cells: Pt|CO2 + O2|Na2CO3?Na1+xZr2SixP3-xO12?(Y2O3)ZrO2?In + In2O3|Ta, Pt for 1 = ? = 2.5, and Pt?CO2 + O2?Na2CO3?ß-alumina?Na1+xZr2SixP3-xO12?Ar + O2?Pt for x = 0, 0.5, 2.5, and 3. The former cell, where the Nasicon solid solution is used as an electrolyte along with yttria-stabilized zirconia, is well suited for Nasicon compositions with high ionic conductivity. In the latter cell, ß-alumina is used as an electrolyte and the Nasicon solid solution forms an electrode. The chemical potential of Na2O is found to increase monotonically with x at constant temperature. The partial entropy of Na2O decreases continuously with x. However, the partial enthalpy exhibits a maximum at x = 2. This suggests that the binding energy is minimum at the composition where ionic conductivity and cell volume have maximum values.

Electrical and magnetic properties of several oxide systems of K2NiF4 structure have been compared to those of the corresponding perovskites. Members of the La1−xSr1+xCoO4 system are all semiconductors with a high activation energy for conduction unlike La1−xSrxCoO3 (x ≥ 0.3) which is metallic; the latter oxides are ferromagnetic. La0.5Sr1.5CoO4 shows a magnetization of 0.5 μB at 0 K (compared to 1.5 μB of La0.5Sr0.5CoO3), but the high-temperature susceptibilities of the two systems are comparable. In SrO · (La0.5Sr0.5MnO3)n, both magnetization and electrical conductivity increase with the increase in n approaching the value of the perovskite La0.5Sr0.5MnO3. LaSrMn0.5Ni0.5(Co0.5)O4 shows no evidence of long-range ferromagnetic ordering unlike the perovskite LaMn0.5Ni0.5(Co0.5)O3; high-temperature susceptibility behavior of these two insulating systems is, however, similar. LaSr1−xBaxNiO4 exhibits high electrical resistivity with the resistivity increasing proportionately with the magnetic susceptibility (note that LaNiO3 is a Pauli-paramagnetic metal). High-temperature susceptibility of LaSrNiO4 and LaNiO3 are comparable. Susceptibility measurements show no evidence for long-range ordering in LaSrFe1−xNixO4 unlike in LaFe1−xNixO3 (x ≤ 0.35) and the electrical resistivity of the former is considerably higher. Electrical resistivity of Sr2RuO4 is more than an order of magnitude higher than that of SrRuO3. Some generalizations of the properties of two- and three-dimensional oxide systems have emerged from these experimental observations.

In 1-cyclo-hexyl-6,6,8a-trimethyl-3a,6,7,8a-tetra-hydro-1H-1-benzofuro[2,3-b]pyrrole-2,4(3H,5H)-dione, C19H27NO3, (I), and the isomorphous compounds 6,6,8a-trimethyl-1-phenyl-3a,6,7,8a-tetra-hydro-1H-1-benzofuro[2,3-b]pyrrole-2,4(3H,5H)-dione, C19H21NO3, (II), and 6,6,8a-trimethyl-1-(3-pyridyl)-3a,6,7,8a-tetra-hydro-1H-1-benzofuro[2,3-b]pyrrole-2,4(3H,5H)-dione, C18H20N2O3, (III), the tetra-hydro-benzo-dihydro-furo-pyrrolidine ring systems are folded at the cis junction of the five-membered rings, giving rise to a non-planar shape of the tricyclic cores. The dihydro-furan and pyrrolidine rings in (I) are puckered and adopt an envelope conformation. The cyclo-hexene rings adopt a half-chair conformation in all the mol-ecules, while the substituent N-cyclo-hexyl ring in (I) assumes a chair form. Short intra-molecular C-HcO contacts form S(5) and S(6) motifs. The isomorphous compounds (II) and (III) are effectively isostructural, and aggregate into chains via inter-molecular C-HcO hydrogen bonds.

A completely automated temperature-programmed reaction (TPR) system for carrying out gas-solid catalytic reactions under atmospheric flow conditions is fabricated to study CO and hydrocarbon oxidation, and NO reduction. The system consists of an all-stainless steel UHV system, quadrupole mass spectrometer SX200 (VG Scientific), a tubular furnace and micro-reactor, a temperature controller, a versatile gas handling system, and a data acquisition and analysis system. The performance of the system has been tested under standard experimental conditions for CO oxidation over well-characterized Ce1-x-y(La/Y)(y)O2-delta catalysts. Testing of 3-way catalysis with CO, NO and C2H2 to convert to CO2, N-2 and H2O is done with this catalyst which shows complete removal of pollutants below 325 degrees C. Fixed oxide-ion defects in Pt substituted Ce1-y(La/Y)(y)O2-y/2 show higher catalytic activity than Pt ion-substituted CeO2

The delamination-restacking behavior of a number of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) differing in [M-II]/[M-III] ratio, constituent metal ions and intercalated surfactant anions in different organic solvents has been studied. Colloidal dispersion due to delamination and the stability of the colloid obtained have been found to be not affected much by the nature of the constituent metal ions but increase with increase in the size of the surfactant anion. LDHs with low [M-II]/[M-III] ratio delaminate better than the ones with high [M-II]/[M-III] ratio. Delamination is best in alcohols such as 1-butanol, 1-hexanol, 1-octanol and I-decanol, while a little delamination occurs in nonpolar solvents such as hexane. In all the cases, the original layered solid could be obtained through restacking of layers from the colloidal dispersion.

Monophasic Na0.5La0.5Bi4Ti4O15 powders were synthesized via the conventional solid-state reaction route. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) studies carried out on the as synthesized powdered samples confirmed the phase to be a four-layer Aurivillius that crystallizes in an orthorhombic A2(1)am space group. The microstructure and the chemical composition of the sintered sample were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX). The dielectric properties of the ceramics have been studied in the 27-700 degrees C temperature range at various frequencies (100 Hz to 1 MHz). A sharp dielectric anomaly was observed at 580 degrees C for all the frequencies corresponding to the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition. Saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loops were observed at 200 degrees C and the associated remnant polarization (P-r) and coercive field (E-c) were found to be 7.4 mu C/cm(2) and 34.8 kV/cm, respectively. AC conductivity analysis confirmed the existence of two different conduction mechanisms in the ferroelectric region. Activation energies calculated from the Arrhenius plots were similar to 0.24 eV and similar to 0.84 eV in the 300-450 degrees C and 450-580 degrees C temperature ranges, respectively. Isoselenocyanates derived from Boc/Z-amino acids are prepared by the reaction of the corresponding isonitriles with selenium powder in presence of triethylamine at reflux. The utility of these new classes of isoselenocyanates in the preparation of selenoureidodipeptidomimetics possessing both amino as well as carboxy termini has been accomplished. The H-1 NMR analysis confirmed that the protocol involving the conversion of isonitriles to isoselenocyanates and their use as coupling agents in assembling selenour-eido derivatives is free from racemization. A contactless method to determine the electrical conductivity of nanoparticles is presented. It is based on the lineshape analysis of electron magnetic resonance signals which are `Dysonian' for conducting samples of sizes larger than the skin depth. The method is validated bymeasurements on a bulk sample of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 where it gives values close to those obtained from direct measurement of conductivity and is then used to determine the conductivity of nanoparticles of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol as a function of temperature. Gd2O3:Eu3+ (0.5-8.0 mol%) nanophosphors have been prepared by low temperature solution combustion method using metal nitrates as oxidizers and oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) as a fuel. The phosphors are well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and photoluminescence (PL) techniques. PXRD patterns of as-formed and calcined (800 degrees C, 3 h) Gd2O3 powders exhibit monoclinic phase with mean crystallite sizes ranging from 20 to 50 nm. Eu3+ doping changes the structure from monoclinic to mixed phase of monoclinic and cubic. SEM micrographs shows the products are foamy, agglomerated and fluffy in nature due to the large amount of gases liberated during combustion reaction. Upon 254 nm excitation the photoluminescence of the Gd2O3:Eu3+ particles show red emission at 611 nm corresponding to D-5(0)-> F-7(2) transition. It is observed that PL intensity increases with calcination temperature. This might be attributed to better crystallization and eliminates the defects, which serve as centers of non-radiative relaxation for nanomaterials. It is observed that the optical energy gap (E-g) is widened with increase Eu3+ content. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A simple and efficient two-step hybrid electrochemical-thermal route was developed for the synthesis of large quantity of ZnO nanoparticles using aqueous sodium bicarbonate electrolyte and sacrificial Zn anode and cathode in an undivided cell under galvanostatic mode at room temperature. The bath concentration and current density were varied from 30 to 120 mmol and 0.05 to 1.5 A/dm(2). The electrochemically generated precursor was calcined for an hour at different range of temperature from 140 to 600 A degrees C. The calcined samples were characterized by XRD, SEM/EDX, TEM, TG-DTA, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectral methods. Rietveld refinement of X-ray data indicates that the calcined compound exhibits hexagonal (Wurtzite) structure with space group of P63mc (No. 186). The crystallite sizes were in the range of 22-75 nm based on Debye-Scherrer equation. The TEM results reveal that the particle sizes were in the order of 30-40 nm. The blue shift was noticed in UV-Vis absorption spectra, the band gaps were found to be 5.40-5.11 eV. Scanning electron micrographs suggest that all the samples were randomly oriented granular morphology.
