The Impact of Tobacco Production Liberalization on Smallholders in Malawi

Burley tobacco production in Malawi was liberalized to permit production by smallholders in the early 1990s. The purpose of this paper is to show which smallholders began producing burley tobacco after liberalization and which smallholders still continue to produce it. Analysis of the characteristics of burley tobacco producers shows that only smallholders who had adequate farm size and adequate funds could start to produce it. With regard to the farm size requirements, only smallholders who had enough acreage to sell tobacco on the auction floors and who had enough acreage to rotate crops could start to produce. With regard to the financial requirements, only smallholders who could procure funds through informal institutions or who possessed their own capital to meet the necessary agricultural expenditures could start. So, it was only the wealthy households which could start to produce tobacco after liberalization and continue to produce it.

OS OBJETIVOS DESTE ESTUDO FORAM: CARACTERIZAR A POPULAÇÃO DE PACIENTES DE UMA CLÍNICA-ESCOLA; INVESTIGAR OS ASPECTOS PSICO-AFETIVOS ASSOCIADOS ÀS DOENÇAS PERIODONTAIS DESSES PACIENTES, ALÉM DOS RECURSOS DEFENSIVOS UTILIZADOS POR ELES. MÉTODO: LEVANTOU-SE DADOS SÓCIO-DEMOGRÁFICOS, DE SAÚDE GERAL E PERIODONTAL DE 789 PACIENTES ATENDIDOS NUM DEPARTAMENTO DE PERIODONTIA DE UMA CLÍNICA-ESCOLA DE ODONTOLOGIA, DADOS ESTES QUE CONSTITUÍRAM A ETAPA QUANTITATIVA DO ESTUDO. DESSES PACIENTES, TRÊS FORAM ENTREVISTADOS E INTEGRARAM A AMOSTRA DA ETAPA QUALITATIVA DA PESQUISA. OS RESULTADOS INDICARAM QUE ENTRE PACIENTES POLI-QUEIXOSOS NÃO FOI ENCONTRADA CORRELAÇÃO SIGNIFICATIVA ENTRE DOENÇA PERIODONTAL LEVE A MODERADA OU LEVE A SEVERA COM GÊNERO, IDADE, ESTADO CIVIL, GRAU DE INSTRUÇÃO OU ATIVIDADE LABORAL. TAMBÉM NÃO HOUVE RELAÇÃO SIGNIFICATIVA QUANTO À PRESENÇA DE TABAGISMO, BRUXISMO, ONICOFAGIA E XEROSTOMIA. VERIFICAMOS QUE A DOENÇA PERIODONTAL CRÔNICA TEM SUAS ORIGENS NAS RELAÇÕES OBJETAIS DA MAIS TENRA INFÂNCIA E QUE AS ANSIEDADES ESQUIZO-PARANÓIDES QUE CARACTERIZAM ESSAS PRIMEIRAS RELAÇÕES, CONTINUAM PERMEANDO AS RELAÇÕES DURANTE TODA A VIDA DAS PACIENTES. COMO OS RECURSOS DEFENSIVOS UTILIZADOS SÃO PSIQUICAMENTE POUCO EVOLUÍDOS, O EQUILÍBRIO, A HOMEOSTASE É ENCONTRADA NA DOENÇA. CONCLUÍMOS QUE A DINÂMICA INTRA-PSÍQUICA PODE ESTAR ASSOCIADA NÃO SÓ À DOENÇA PERIODONTAL, MAS TAMBÉM AO ESTADO DE SAÚDE GERAL DESSES PACIENTES.

Isolation and characterization of the chicken m2 acetylcholine receptor promoter region: Induction of gene transcription by leukemia inhibitory factor and ciliary neurotrophic factor

We have isolated the promoter region and determined the start sites of transcription for the gene encoding the chicken m2 (cm2) muscarinic acetylcholine receptor. Transfection experiments, using cm2-luciferase reporter gene constructs, demonstrated that a 789-bp genomic fragment was sufficient to drive high level expression in chicken heart primary cultures, while an additional 1.2-kb region was required for maximal expression in mouse septal/neuroblastoma (SN56) cells. Treatment of SN56 cells with the cytokines ciliary neurotrophic factor and leukemia inhibitory factor increases expression of endogenous muscarinic acetylcholine receptors and results in a 4- to 6-fold induction of cm2 promoter driven luciferase expression. We have mapped a region of the cm2 promoter that is necessary for induction by cytokines.

The arginine finger of RasGAP helps Gln-61 align the nucleophilic water in GAP-stimulated hydrolysis of GTP

The Ras family of GTPases is a collection of molecular switches that link receptors on the plasma membrane to signaling pathways that regulate cell proliferation and differentiation. The accessory GTPase-activating proteins (GAPs) negatively regulate the cell signaling by increasing the slow intrinsic GTP to GDP hydrolysis rate of Ras. Mutants of Ras are found in 25–30% of human tumors. The most dramatic property of these mutants is their insensitivity to the negative regulatory action of GAPs. All known oncogenic mutants of Ras map to a small subset of amino acids. Gln-61 is particularly important because virtually all mutations of this residue eliminate sensitivity to GAPs. Despite its obvious importance for carcinogenesis, the role of Gln-61 in the GAP-stimulated GTPase activity of Ras has remained a mystery. Our molecular dynamics simulations of the p21ras–p120GAP–GTP complex suggest that the local structure around the catalytic region can be different from that revealed by the x-ray crystal structure. We find that the carbonyl oxygen on the backbone of the arginine finger supplied in trans by p120GAP (Arg-789) interacts with a water molecule in the active site that is forming a bridge between the NH2 group of the Gln-61 and the γ-phosphate of GTP. Thus, Arg-789 may play a dual role in generating the nucleophile as well as stabilizing the transition state for P—O bond cleavage.
