On the basis of archival research, this Article considers the negotiation history of both the 1926 Slavery Convention and 1956 Supplementary Convention and demonstrates that an interpretation of the provisions of the definition of slavery consonant with the travaux préparatoires reveal a definition which provides for the possibility of holding States and individuals responsible for not only slavery de jure but also de facto. That understanding is premised on a reading of the definition that speaks not of the ‘ownership’ of one person by another; but of the powers attached to the right of ownership. It is through an exploration of this phrase that a proper understanding of the definition of slavery in international law emerges.

Concrete used for underwater repair is often proportioned to spread readily into place and self-consolidate, and to develop high resistance to segregation and water dilution. An investigation was carried out to determine the effect of the dosage of antiwashout admixture, water-cementitious materials ratio (w/cm), and binder composition on the relative residual strength of highly flowable underwater concrete. Two types of antiwashout admixtures were used: a powdered welan gum at 0.07 and 0.15% by mass of binder, and a liquid-based cellulosic admixture employed at a high dosage of 1 to 1.65 L/100 kg of cementitious materials. The w/cms were set at 0.41 and 0.47 to secure adequate performance of underwater concrete for construction and repair. Four binder compositions were used: a Canadian Type 10 cement; a cement with 10% silica fume replacement; a cement with 50% replacement of granulated blast-furnace slag; and a ternary binder containing 6% silica fume and 20% Class F fly ash. Test results indicate that for a given washout mass loss and slump flow consistency, greater relative residual strength can be secured when the dosage of antiwashout admixture is increased, the w/cm is reduced, and a binary binder with 10% silica fume substitution or the ternary binder are employed. Such mixtures can develop relative residual compressive strengths of 85 and 80%, compared to mixtures cast in air, when the value of washout loss is limited to 4 and 6% for mixtures with slump flow values of 450 and 550 mm, respectively.

Young people are less explored in museum audience research; this is a paradoxical situation when considering its strategic location in the cultural reproduction and if considering the high performing cultural consumption compared with other sectors. The phenomenon of museums consumption by young Chileans who are self recognized as public and non-public museums is explored from a qualitative approach. It was conducted with focus groups in the three largest cities in Chile (Santiago, Valparaíso and Concepción). They identify the museum as a cultural institution in full force. However, in questioning museums activity youth reveal the specificity of their cultural matrix. This is referred to a social temporality based on the fragment, the discourse of familiarity, proximity and instead of breaking and critical. They claim a museum aesthetic / historical experience based on pleasure and enjoyment. An overview is proposed to further clarify the youth cultural consumption to characterize more precisely the place of the museum in the set, to design more effective policies museums.

In 1990, Juan Antonio Ramírez made known his iconological paranoiac method to the academic world. It is a system devised to study Dalí´s work, born of happy matrimony between the catalonian artist´s critical paranoiac method and the first iconographic school of Warburg and Panofsky. What, at first sight, seemed to be an extravagant methodology with little academic credibility, turned out to be, by going forward in time, an effective research method when analyzing Dali´s initial works. It is no wonder that, at the beginning of XXI century, this hybridization between Dalí´s and Panofsky’s methods, were regarded as a strange and nonsensical idea. Nevertheless, twenty years after, blatant examples have been noted, which endorse the advantages of this new system for “iconographic” study. As usual, this new contribution by Juan Antonio Ramirez to art history methodology is called upon to have a successful future survival, in forthcoming generations. This article, attempts to analyze this method, inquiring into the validity, effectiveness and practical utility.

Forty-eight Large White x Landrace multiparous sows were mixed into twelve groups of four animals after their piglets were weaned. These groups were defined as static, with no animals being added to or removed from the groups after their formation. Aggressive and submissive behaviours were recorded continuously for 9 h after the sows were mixed, and the sows were assigned high or low social status on the basis of their relative aggressiveness and success in aggressive interactions. After five weeks, each static group was mixed into a dynamic group of 40+/-2 sows for an 11-week period. Three static groups (ie 12 animals) at a time were added to the dynamic group at three-week intervals; the same number of animals was removed at these time-points in order to maintain the group number at 40+/-2. Injury levels increased significantly with the transition from static groups to the dynamic group (P
