Until the eighties the main source of deep water masses in the Ionian Basin was the southern Adriatic Sea. During the nineties a dramatic climatic change took place in the eastern Mediterranean (Eastern Mediterranean Transient); deep water was formed of water originating from the Aegean Sea since then. This change in the deep water had extensive consequences for the whole circulation of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Expeditions carried out in this region during the last years indicate now that the process of deep water formation might reverse again. The process of this re-reversing deep water formation is a long-term one. Therefore, the characteristics of the today's deep water masses in the Ionian Basin, to which extent these characteristics differ from the deep water masses before the EMT and in which state the re-reversed Eastern Mediterranean deep water circulation is now, must be investigated continuously. The Adriatic deep water finds its way to the Ionian Basin on several routes with different entrainments rates. The entrainment rates might be a deciding factor for the Deep Ionian Waters and the resulting density might influence the role of the Aegean Deep Water for the Ionian Deep Waters as well. Therefore, it is crucial to identify and quantify the routes and entrainment rates of the Adriatic Deep Water. The cruise carried out is a continuation of the work carried out during the cruises POS298, M71/3, MSM13/2, MSM15/4 and M84/3. The objective is to investigate the spatial and temporal variability of dispersion and mixing of the Ionian Deep Water. During the cruise CTD stations were carried out and samples for nutrient, oxygen and oxygen isotopes were taken. Continously measurements were made with the vessel mounted ADCP and thermosalinograph. Additionally, on the cruise students were trained on the use of oceanographic equipment.

Snow height was measured by the Snow Depth Buoy 2014S13, an autonomous platform, drifting on Arctic sea ice, deployed during the CryoVEx2014 field campaign. The resulting time series describes the evolution of snow height as a function of place and time between 2014-03-30 and 2014-07-20 in sample intervals of 1 hour. The Snow Depth Buoy consists of four independent sonar measurements representing the area (approx. 10 m**2) around the buoy. The buoy was installed on multi year ice. In addition to snow height, geographic position (GPS), barometric pressure, air temperature, and ice surface temperature were measured. Negative values of snow height occur if surface ablation continues into the sea ice. Thus, these measurements describe the position of the sea ice surface relative to the original snow-ice interface. Differences between single sensors indicate small-scale variability of the snow pack around the buoy. The data set has been processed, including the removal of obvious inconsistencies (missing values). Records without any snow height may still be used for sea ice drift analyses. The critical fracture toughness is a material parameter describing the resistance of a cracked body to further crack extension. It is an important parameter to simulate and predict the break-up behaviour of ice shelves from calving of single icebergs to the disintegration of entire ice shelves over a wide range of length scales. The fracture toughness values are calculated with equations that are derived from an elastic stress analysis. Additionally, an X-ray computer tomography (CT scanner) was used to identify the density as a function of depth. The critical fracture toughness of 91 Antarctic inland ice samples with densities between 840 to 870 kg/m**3 has been determined by applying a four-point-bending technique on single edge v-notched beam samples. The examined ice core was drilled 70m north of Kohnen Station, Dronnning Maud Land (75°00' S, 00°04' E, 2882 m).

Measures have been developed to understand tendencies in the distribution of economic activity. The merits of these measures are in the convenience of data collection and processing. In this interim report, investigating the property of such measures to determine the geographical spread of economic activities, we summarize the merits and limitations of measures, and make clear that we must apply caution in their usage. As a first trial to access areal data, this project focus on administrative areas, not on point data and input-output data. Firm level data is not within the scope of this article. The rest of this article is organized as follows. In Section 2, we touch on the the limitations and problems associated with the measures and areal data. Specific measures are introduced in Section 3, and applied in Section 4. The conclusion summarizes the findings and discusses future work.

Plant proteolysis is a metabolic process where specific enzymes called peptidases degrade proteins. In plants, this complex process involves broad metabolic networks and different sub-cellular compartments. Several types of peptidases take part in the proteolytic process, mainly cysteine-, serine-, aspartyl- and metallo- peptidases. Among the cysteine-peptidases, the papain-like or C1A peptidases (family C1, clan CA) are extensively present in land plants and are classified into catepsins L-, B-, H- and Flike. The catalytic mechanism of these C1A peptidases is highly conserved and involves the three amino acids Cys, His and Asn in the catalytic triad, and a Gln residue which seems essential for maintaining an active enzyme conformation. These proteins are synthesized as inactive precursors, which comprise an N-terminal signal peptide, a propeptide, and the mature protein. In barley, we have identified 33 cysteine-peptidases from the papain-like family, classifying them into 8 different groups. Five of them corresponded to cathepsins L-like (5 subgroups), 1 cathepsin B-like group, 1 cathepsin F-like group and 1 cathepsin H-like group. Besides, C1A peptidases are the specific targets of the plant proteinaceous inhibitors known as phytocystatins (PhyCys). The cystatin inhibitory mechanism is produced by a tight and reversible interaction with their target enzymes. In barley, the cystatin gene family is comprised by 13 members. In this work we have tried to elucidate the role of the C1A cysteine-peptidases and their specific inhibitors (cystatins) in the germination process of the barley grain. Therefore, we selected a representative member of each group/subgroup of C1A peptidases (1 cathepsin B-like, 1 cathepsin F-like, 1 cathepsin H-like and 5 cathepsins L-like). The molecular characterization of the cysteine-peptidases was done and the peptidase-inhibitor interaction was analyzed in vitro and in vivo. A study in the structural basis for specificity of pro-peptide/enzyme interaction in barley C1A cysteine-peptidases has been also carried out by inhibitory assays and the modeling of the three-dimensional structures. The barley grain maturation produces the accumulation of storage proteins (prolamins) in the endosperm which are mobilized during germination to supply the required nutrients until the photosynthesis is fully established. In this work, we have demonstrated the participation of the cysteine-peptidases and their inhibitors in the degradation of the different storage protein fractions (hordeins, albumins and globulins) present in the barley grain. Besides, transgenic barley plants overexpressing or silencing cysteine-peptidases or cystatins were obtained by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of barley immature embryos to analyze their physiological function in vivo. Preliminary assays were carried out with the T1 grains of several transgenic lines. Comparing the knock-out and the overexpressing lines with the WT, alterations in the germination process were detected and were correlated with their grain hordein content. These data will be validated with the homozygous grains that are being produced through the double haploid technique by microspore culture. Resumen La proteólisis es un proceso metabólico por el cual se lleva a cabo la degradación de las proteínas de un organismo a través de enzimas específicas llamadas proteasas. En plantas, este complejo proceso comprende un entramado de rutas metabólicas que implican, además, diferentes compartimentos subcelulares. En la proteólisis participan numerosas proteasas, principalmente cisteín-, serín-, aspartil-, y metalo-proteasas. Dentro de las cisteín-proteasas, las proteasas tipo papaína o C1A (familia C1, clan CA) están extensamente representadas en plantas terrestres, y se clasifican en catepsinas tipo L, B, H y F. El mecanismo catalítico de estas proteasas está altamente conservado y la triada catalítica formada por los aminoácidos Cys, His y Asn, y a un aminoácido Gln, que parece esencial para el mantenimiento de la conformación activa de la proteína. Las proteasas C1A se sintetizan como precursores inactivos y comprenden un péptido señal en el extremo N-terminal, un pro-péptido y la proteína madura. En cebada hemos identificado 33 cisteín-proteasas de tipo papaína y las hemos clasificado filogenéticamente en 8 grupos diferentes. Cinco de ellos pertenecen a las catepsinas tipo L (5 subgrupos), un grupo a las catepsinas tipo-B, otro a las catepsinas tipo-F y un último a las catepsinas tipo-H. Las proteasas C1A son además las dianas específicas de los inhibidores protéicos de plantas denominados fitocistatinas. El mecanismo de inhibición de las cistatinas está basado en una fuerte interacción reversible. En cebada, se conoce la familia génica completa de las cistatinas, que está formada por 13 miembros. En el presente trabajo se ha investigado el papel de las cisteín-proteasas de cebada y sus inhibidores específicos en el proceso de la germinación de la semilla. Para ello, se seleccionó una proteasa representante de cada grupo/subgrupo (1 catepsina tipo- B, 1 tipo-F, 1 tipo-H, y 5 tipo-L, una por cada subgrupo). Se ha llevado a cabo su caracterización molecular y se ha analizado la interacción enzima-inhibidor tanto in vivo como in vitro. También se han realizado estudios sobre las bases estructurales que demuestran la especificidad en la interacción enzima/propéptido en las proteasas C1A de cebada, mediante ensayos de inhibición y la predicción de modelos estructurales de la interacción. Finalmente, y dado que durante la maduración de la semilla se almacenan proteínas de reserva (prolaminas) en el endospermo que son movilizadas durante la germinación para suministrar los nutrientes necesarios hasta que la nueva planta pueda realizar la fotosíntesis, en este trabajo se ha demostrado la participación de las cisteínproteasas y sus inhibidores en la degradación de las diferentes tipos de proteínas de reserva (hordeinas, albúmins y globulinas) presentes en el grano de cebada. Además, se han obtenido plantas transgénicas de cebada que sobre-expresan o silencian cistatinas y cisteín-proteasas con el fin de analizar la función fisiológica in vivo. Se han realizado análisis preliminares en las semillas T1 de varias líneas tránsgenicas de cebada y al comparar las líneas knock-out y las líneas de sobre-expresión con las silvestres, se han detectado alteraciones en la germinación que están además correlacionadas con el contenido de hordeinas de las semillas. Estos datos serán validados en las semillas homocigotas que se están generando mediante la técnica de dobles haploides a partir del cultivo de microesporas.

This Doctoral Thesis entitled Contribution to the analysis, design and assessment of compact antenna test ranges at millimeter wavelengths aims to deepen the knowledge of a particular antenna measurement system: the compact range, operating in the frequency bands of millimeter wavelengths. The thesis has been developed at Radiation Group (GR), an antenna laboratory which belongs to the Signals, Systems and Radiocommunications department (SSR), from Technical University of Madrid (UPM). The Radiation Group owns an extensive experience on antenna measurements, running at present four facilities which operate in different configurations: Gregorian compact antenna test range, spherical near field, planar near field and semianechoic arch system. The research work performed in line with this thesis contributes the knowledge of the first measurement configuration at higher frequencies, beyond the microwaves region where Radiation Group features customer-level performance. To reach this high level purpose, a set of scientific tasks were sequentially carried out. Those are succinctly described in the subsequent paragraphs. A first step dealed with the State of Art review. The study of scientific literature dealed with the analysis of measurement practices in compact antenna test ranges in addition with the particularities of millimeter wavelength technologies. Joint study of both fields of knowledge converged, when this measurement facilities are of interest, in a series of technological challenges which become serious bottlenecks at different stages: analysis, design and assessment. Thirdly after the overview study, focus was set on Electromagnetic analysis algorithms. These formulations allow to approach certain electromagnetic features of interest, such as field distribution phase or stray signal analysis of particular structures when they interact with electromagnetic waves sources. Properly operated, a CATR facility features electromagnetic waves collimation optics which are large, in terms of wavelengths. Accordingly, the electromagnetic analysis tasks introduce an extense number of mathematic unknowns which grow with frequency, following different polynomic order laws depending on the used algorithmia. In particular, the optics configuration which was of our interest consisted on the reflection type serrated edge collimator. The analysis of these devices requires a flexible handling of almost arbitrary scattering geometries, becoming this flexibility the nucleus of the algorithmia’s ability to perform the subsequent design tasks. This thesis’ contribution to this field of knowledge consisted on reaching a formulation which was powerful at the same time when dealing with various analysis geometries and computationally speaking. Two algorithmia were developed. While based on the same principle of hybridization, they reached different order Physics performance at the cost of the computational efficiency. Inter-comparison of their CATR design capabilities was performed, reaching both qualitative as well as quantitative conclusions on their scope. In third place, interest was shifted from analysis - design tasks towards range assessment. Millimetre wavelengths imply strict mechanical tolerances and fine setup adjustment. In addition, the large number of unknowns issue already faced in the analysis stage appears as well in the on chamber field probing stage. Natural decrease of dynamic range available by semiconductor millimeter waves sources requires in addition larger integration times at each probing point. These peculiarities increase exponentially the difficulty of performing assessment processes in CATR facilities beyond microwaves. The bottleneck becomes so tight that it compromises the range characterization beyond a certain limit frequency which typically lies on the lowest segment of millimeter wavelength frequencies. However the value of range assessment moves, on the contrary, towards the highest segment. This thesis contributes this technological scenario developing quiet zone probing techniques which achieves substantial data reduction ratii. Collaterally, it increases the robustness of the results to noise, which is a virtual rise of the setup’s available dynamic range. In fourth place, the environmental sensitivity of millimeter wavelengths issue was approached. It is well known the drifts of electromagnetic experiments due to the dependance of the re sults with respect to the surrounding environment. This feature relegates many industrial practices of microwave frequencies to the experimental stage, at millimeter wavelengths. In particular, evolution of the atmosphere within acceptable conditioning bounds redounds in drift phenomena which completely mask the experimental results. The contribution of this thesis on this aspect consists on modeling electrically the indoor atmosphere existing in a CATR, as a function of environmental variables which affect the range’s performance. A simple model was developed, being able to handle high level phenomena, such as feed - probe phase drift as a function of low level magnitudes easy to be sampled: relative humidity and temperature. With this model, environmental compensation can be performed and chamber conditioning is automatically extended towards higher frequencies. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to go further into the knowledge of millimetre wavelengths involving compact antenna test ranges. This knowledge is dosified through the sequential stages of a CATR conception, form early low level electromagnetic analysis towards the assessment of an operative facility, stages for each one of which nowadays bottleneck phenomena exist and seriously compromise the antenna measurement practices at millimeter wavelengths.
