Dispersions of Al2O3 as well as CeO2 in CaF2 are found to enhance the conductivity of CaF2. Both these systems are biphasic and the electrical conduction in them is purely ionic in nature. At 650 K the increase in the ionic conductivity of the dispersed solid electrolyte system CaF2---Al2O3 is by about two orders of magnitude in relation to the conductivity of the host electrolyte CaF2, whereas for the CaF2---CeO2 system it is about three orders of magnitude. Some aspects of the increase in the ionic conductivities of CaF2---Al2O3 and CaF2---CeO2 electrolytes can be explained by a recent theoretical model. It is proposed that a substantial enhancement in the vacancy concentration of CaF2, brought about by the attraction of F− ions to the surface of Al2O3 (or CeO2), is responsible for the low temperature increase in the ionic conductivity of CaF2.

The thermodynamic activities of MgO in the NaCl-type solid solutions which can exist in xMgO + (1 x)MnO have been determined in the temperature range 1163 to 1318 K from a solid-state galvanic cell incorporating MgF2 as the solid electrolyte. The activities of MnO have been calculated by a graphical Gibbs-Duhem integration method. The activities of both the components exhibit positive deviations from ideality over the entire composition range. The excess molar enthalpies are found to be positive. Further, xMgO + (1 - x)MnO does not conform to regular-solution behaviour. The origin of the excess thermodynamic properties is discussed in relation to the cationic size disparity and the crystal-field effects.

It is conjectured that the hard sphere system has several distinct solid phases, all but one of which are metastable. The bifurcation theory analysis of freezing is extended to the description of the transition between a supercooled liquid and a disordered solid by defining a restricted phase space for the disordered solid. This approach leads to the prediction of a first order transition between a supercooled hard sphere fluid and a disordered metastable hard sphere solid. The results of the calculation are in qualitative agreement with the results of Woodcock's molecular dynamics computer simulations. Variable temperature i.r. spectroscopic studies of weak pi-donor-pi-acceptor complexes in the crystalline state indicate that the complexes undergo order-disorder transitions, the disorder being caused by molecular motion. Thermodynamic data on the phase transitions along with the spectral data suggest that the high-temperature crystalline forms of the complexes are likely to be pseudoplastic.

Phase relations in the system Ta-Rh-O were determined by analysis of quenched samples corresponding to thirteen compositions inside the ternary triangle after equilibration at 1273 K. All the Ta-Rh alloys were found to be in equilibrium with Ta2O5. Only one ternary oxide TaRhO4 was detected. Based on phase relations in the ternary system, a solid-state electrochemical cell, incorporating calcia-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte, was designed to measure the standard Gibbs energy of formation (Delta G degrees, J mol(-1)) of TaRhO4 in the temperature range from 900 to 1300 K. For the reaction, 1/2 beta-Ta2O5 + 1/2 Rh2O3(ortho) -> TaRhO4 Delta G degrees = -42993 + 5.676T (+/- 85) The calculated decomposition temperatures of TaRhO4 are 1644 +/- 5K in pure O-2 and 1543 +/- 5K in air at a total pressure p(o) = 0.1 MPa. Thermodynamic properties of TaRhO4 at 298.15K have been evaluated from the results. The limited experimental thermodynamic data for Rh-rich alloys available in the literature are in fair accord with Miedema's model. The Gibbs energies of formation of the different phases in the binary system Ta-Rh were estimated based on these inputs, consistent with the binary phase diagram. Based on the thermodynamic information on the stability of various phases, an oxygen potential diagram for the system Ta-Rh-O at 1273K was constructed. Also presented are temperature-composition diagrams for the ternary system at constant oxygen partial pressures (po(2)/p(o) = 0.212 and 10(-6)) calculated form the basic data.

2 V/40 Ah valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) cells have been constructed with negative plates employing carbon black as well as an admixture of carbon black fumed silica as additives in negative active material for partial-state-of-charge (PSoC) applications. Electrical performance of such cells is compared with conventional 2 V/40 Ah VRLA cells for PSoC operation. Active material utilization has been found to be higher for carbon-black fumed-silica mixed negative plates while formation is faster for cells with carbon-black mixed negative plates. Both faradaic efficiency and percentage capacity delivered have been found to be higher for cells with carbon-black + fumed-silica mixed negative plates. However, a high self-discharge rate is observed for cells with carbon-black + fumed-silica mixed negative plates.

Both LiNbWO6 and LiTaWO6 undergo ion exchange in hot aqueous H2SO4 yielding the hydrates HMWO6 · H2O (M = Nb or Ta). The reaction is accompanied by a structural transformation from the rutile to the ReO3 structure. The cell constants are a = 3.783(3)Å for HNbWO6 · H2O and a = 3.785(5)Å for HTaWO6 · H2O. The ReO3 structure is retained by the dehydration products HMWO6 and MWO5.5 as well. HMWO6 phases yield H1+xMWO6 hydrogen bronzes on exposure to hydrogen in the presence of platinum catalyst.

Rare-earth trioxocobaltates(lll), Ln[CoO,], with Ln = Pr, Nd, Tb, Dy. and Yb exhibit low-spin to high-spin transitions of cobalt characterised by a maximum in the Ax-l against temperature plots where Ax is the cobalt contribution to the magnetic susceptibility. The susceptibility behaviour is distinct from that of La[CoO,] which shows a plateau in the x-I-T curve accompanied by a structural transition. The temperature at which the AX- I-T curve shows a maximum increases with the decrease in the size of the rare-earth ion. The susceptibility behavior of solid solutions of La,,Nd,CoO, has been investigated to see how the behaviour characteristic of Nd[CoO,] changes to that of La[CoO,].

Non-stoichiometric substituted cerium vanadates, MxCe1-xVO4 (M = Li, Ca and Fe), were synthesized by solid-state reactions. The crystal structure was analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction and it exhibits a tetragonal zircon Structure, crystallizing in the space group I4(1)/amd with a = 7.3733(4) and c = 6.4909(4) angstrom and Z = 4. Particle sizes were in the range of 600-800 nm, as observed by scanning electron microscopy. The thermal analysis of the compounds showed phase stability up to 1100 degrees C. The UV diffuse reflectance spectra indicated that the compounds have band gaps in the range of 2.6-2.9 eV. The photocatalytic activity of these Compounds was investigated for the first time for the degradation of different dyes, and organics, the oxidation of cyclohexane and the hydroxylation of benzene. The degradation of dyes was modeled using the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics, while the oxidation of cyclohexane and hydroxylation of benzene were modeled using a free radical mechanism and a series reaction mechanism, respectively.

Reaction of lead nitrate and 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid under hydrothermal conditions carried out at different temperatures and pH yields a hybrid Compound Pb-2(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate)2, 1, and a three-dimensional coordination polymer Pb(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate), It. The two-dimensional double-layered compound, 1, with two-dimensional inorganic connectivities and one-dimensional organic connectivity is novel since hybrid compounds formed by 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid are uncommon. The lead atoms in I have holodirectional geometry, while those in II show hemidirectionality. In both I and II, 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid acts as a multi-dentate ligand with both the carboxylic groups and the amine group taking part in coordination. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. The standard Gibbs energy change accompanying the conversion of rare earth oxides to oxysulfides by reaction of rare earth oxides with diatomic sulfur gas has been measured in the temperature range 870 to 1300 K using the solid state cell: Pt/Cu+Cu2S/R2O2S+R2O3‖(CaO)ZrO2‖Ni+NiO, Pt where R=La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy. The partial pressure of diatomic sulfur over a mixture of rare earth oxide (R2O3) and oxysulfide (R2O2S) is fixed by the dissociation of Cu2S to Cu in a closed system. The buffer mixture of Cu+Cu2S is physically separated from the rare earth oxide and oxysulfide to avoid complications arising from interaction between them. The corresponding equilibrium oxygen partial pressure is measured with an oxide solid electrolyte cell. Gibbs energy change for the conversion of oxide to the corresponding oxysulfide increases monotonically with atomic number of the rare earth element. Second law enthalpy of formation also shows a similar trend. Based on this empirical trend Gibbs energies of formation of oxysulfides of Pr, Eu, Ho, and Er are estimated as a function of temperature.

Isothermal-isobaric ensemble Monte Carlo simulation studies of adamantane have been carried out at different temperatures. Thermodynamic properties and radial distribution functions calculated by employing a simple potential model based on sitesite interactions show good agreement with experiment and suggest that the solid is orientationally disordered at high temperatures.

The dynamics of reactions with low internal barriers are studied both analytically and numerically for two different models. Exact expressions for the average rate,kI, are obtained by solving the associated first passage time problems. Both the average rate constant, kI, and the numerically calculated long-time rate constant, kL, show a fractional power law dependence on the barrier height for very low barriers. The crossover of the reaction dynamics from low to high barrier is investigated.

The effect of rapid solidification on the ordering reaction in Fe---Si and Fe---Al alloys has been reported. It is shown that rapid solidification can influence the ordering reaction in alloys with higher critical ordering temperatures. For ordering reactions at lower temperatures, the effect is similar to that of solid-state quenching. Different factors influencing the ordering reactions and domain structures during rapid solidification of iron-based alloys are discussed.
