Organic ionic plastic crystals (OIPCs) show strong potential as solid-state electrolytes for lithium battery applications, demonstrating promising electrochemical performance and eliminating the need for a volatile and flammable liquid electrolyte. The ionic conductivity (σ) in these systems has recently been shown to depend strongly on polycrystalline morphology, which is largely determined by the sample's thermal history. [K. Romanenko et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2014, 136, 15638]. Tailoring this morphology could lead to conductivities sufficiently high for battery applications, so a more complete understanding of how phenomena such as solid-solid phase transitions can affect the sample morphology is of significant interest. Anisotropic relaxation of nuclear spin magnetisation provides a new MRI based approach for studies of polycrystalline materials at both a macroscopic and molecular level. In this contribution, morphology alterations induced by solid-solid phase transitions in triisobutyl(methyl)phosphonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (P1444FSI) and diethyl(methyl)(isobutyl)phosphonium hexafluorophosphate (P1224PF6) are examined using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), alongside nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, diffusion measurements and conductivity data. These observations are linked to molecular dynamics and structural behaviour crucial for the conductive properties of OIPCs. A distinct correlation is established between the conductivity at a given temperature, σ(T), and the intensity of the narrow NMR signal that is attributed to a mobile fraction, fm(T), of ions in the OIPC. To explain these findings we propose an analogy with the well-studied relationship between permeability (k) and void fraction (θ) in porous media, with k(θ) commonly quantified by a power-law dependence that can also be employed to describe σ(fm).

The fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces with mechanical durability is challenging because the surface microstructure is easily damaged. Herein, we report superhydrophobic conductive graphite nanoplatelet (GNP)/vapor-grown carbon fiber (VGCF)/polypropylene (PP) composite coatings with mechanical durability by a hot-pressing method. The as-prepared GNP/VGCF/PP composite coatings showed water contact angle (WCA) above 150° and sliding angle (SA) less than 5°. The superhydrophobicity was improved with the increase of VGCF content in the hybrid GNP and VGCF fillers. The more VGCFs added in the GNP/VGCF/PP composite coating, the higher porosity on the surface was formed. Compared to the GNP/PP and VGCF/PP composite coatings, the GNP and VGCF hybrid fillers exhibited more remarkable synergistic effect on the electrical conductivity of the GNP/VGCF/PP composite coatings. The GNP/VGCF/PP composite coating with GNP:VGCF = 2:1 possessed a sheet resistance of 1 Ω/sq. After abrasion test, the rough microstructure of the GNP/VGCF/PP (2:1) composite coating was mostly restored and the composite coating retained superhydrophobicity, but not for the VGCF/PP composite coating. When the superhydrophobic surface is mechanically damaged with a loss of superhydrophobicity, it can be easily repaired by a simple way with adhesive tapes. Moreover, the oil-fouled composite surface can regenerate superhydrophobicity by wetting the surface with alcohol and subsequently burning off alcohol.

Recent advances in thermoelectrochemical cells, which are being developed for harvesting low grade waste heat, have shown the promise of cobalt bipyridyl salts as the active redox couple. The Seebeck coefficient, Se, of a redox couple determines the open circuit voltage achievable, for a given temperature gradient, across the thermoelectrochemical cell. Thus, the accurate determination of this thermodynamic parameter is key to the development and study of new redox electrolytes. Further, techniques for accurate determination of Se using only one half of the redox couple reduces the synthetic requirements. Here, we compare three different experimental techniques for measuring Se of a cobalt tris(bipyridyl) redox couple in ionic liquid electrolytes. The use of temperature dependent cyclic voltammetry (CV) in isothermal and non-isothermal cells was investigated in depth, and the Se values compared to those from thermo-electromotive force measurements. Within experimental error, the Se values derived from CV methods were found to be in accordance with those obtained from electromotive force (emf) measurements. The applicability of cyclic voltammetry techniques for determining Se when employing only one part of the redox couple was demonstrated.

Zwitterions with a cyano group on the side chain (CZ) were synthesized. Although the addition of CZ caused a slightly negative effect on viscosity, ionic conductivity, limiting current density, and lithium transference number, the oxidation limit of PEGDME/lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (LiTFSA) composites was improved to over 5 V. For charge/discharge testing using Li|electrolyte|LiCoO2 cells, the cycle stability of PEGDME/LiTFSA with CZ in the voltage range of 3.0-4.6 V was much higher than that of PEGDME/LiTFSA. Incorporating a small mole fraction of CZ into PEGDME-based electrolytes prevented an increase in the interface resistance between the electrolyte and cathode with increasing numbers of the cycle.

Herein, a new graphene/Cu nanoparticle composite was prepared via the in situ reduction of GO in the presence of Cu nanoparticles which was then utilized as a sacrificing template for the formation of flexible and porous graphene capacitor electrodes by the dissolution of the intercalated Cu nanoparticle in a mixed solution of FeCl3 and HCl. The porous RGO electrode was characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The as-prepared graphene/Cu nanoparticle composite and the pure graphene film after removal of Cu nanoparticles possessed high conductivity of 3.1 × 103 S m-1 and 436 S m-1 respectively. The porous RGO can be used as the electrode for the fabrication of supercapacitors with high gravimetric specific capacitances up to 146 F g-1, good rate capability and satisfactory electrochemical stability. This environmentally friendly and efficient approach to fabricating porous graphene nanostructures could have enormous potential applications in the field of energy storage and nanotechnology.

Replacing organic liquid electrolytes with solid electrolytes has led to a new perspective on batteries, enabling high-energy battery chemistry with intrinsically safe cell designs. However, most solid/gel electrolytes are easily deformed; under extreme deformation, leakage and/or short-circuiting can occur. Here, we report a novel magneto-rheological electrolyte (MR electrolyte) that responds to changes in an external magnetic field; the electrolyte exhibits low viscosity in the absence of a magnetic field and increased viscosity or a solid-like phase in the presence of a magnetic field. This change from a liquid to solid does not significantly change the conductivity of the MR electrolyte. This work introduces a new class of magnetically sensitive solid electrolytes that can enhance impact resistance and prevent leakage from electronic devices through reversible active switching of their mechanical properties.

A scaled-up fiber wet-spinning production of electrically conductive and highly stretchable PU/PEDOT:PSS fibers is demonstrated for the first time. The PU/PEDOT:PSS fibers possess the mechanical properties appropriate for knitting various textile structures. The knitted textiles exhibit strain sensing properties that were dependent upon the number of PU/PEDOT:PSS fibers used in knitting. The knitted textiles show sensitivity (as measured by the gauge factor) that increases with the number of PU/PEDOT:PSS fibers deployed. A highly stable sensor response was observed when four PU/PEDOT:PSS fibers were co-knitted with a commercial Spandex yarn. The knitted textile sensor can distinguish different magnitudes of applied strain with cyclically repeatable sensor responses at applied strains of up to 160%. When used in conjunction with a commercial wireless transmitter, the knitted textile responded well to the magnitude of bending deformations, demonstrating potential for remote strain sensing applications. The feasibility of an all-polymeric knitted textile wearable strain sensor was demonstrated in a knee sleeve prototype with application in personal training and rehabilitation following injury.

Solid state phases of organic salts, whose chemistry is closely related to that of ionic liquids, often show interesting phase behavior and dynamics resulting in solid-state conductors that have potential application in electrochemical devices such as solid state batteries. The mechanism of conduction in these solid-state plastic crystal phases is still not entirely understood. We have recently shown using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations that the introduction of defects, such as vacancies, leads to heterogeneous dynamics in the OIPC arising from amorphous and mobile domains in these materials. Advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis indicates that these domains can exhibit distinct orientations, leading to anisotropic ionic conductivity with enhanced values in a particular direction. This paper will review this new understanding, drawing links between the molecular and macroscopic-level information provided by these two techniques.

Electrolytes based on bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI) with a range of LiFSI salt concentrations were characterized using physical property measurements, as well as NMR, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. Different from the behavior at lower concentrations, the FSI electrolyte containing 1 : 1 salt to IL mole ratio showed less deviation from the KCl line in the Walden plot, suggesting greater ionic dissociation. Diffusion measurements show higher mobility of lithium ions compared to the other ions, which suggests that the partial conductivity of Li(+) is higher at this higher composition. Changes in the FT-IR and Raman peaks indicate that the cis-FSI conformation is preferred with increasing Li salt concentration.

Intramolecular proton transfer from oxygen to nitrogen atoms in the alpha-alanine amino acid has been studied by ab initio methods at the HF/6-31G*, HF/6-31 ++ G** and MP2/6-31 ++ G** levels of calculation including the solvent effects by means of self-consistent reaction field theory. An analysis of the results based on the natural bond orbital charges shows that the transition structure presents an imbalance in the sense that the charge shift lags behind the proton transfer and that the bond formation is always in advance with respect to the bond cleavage. All calculation levels show that the barrier height associated with the conformational change on alpha-alanine is larger than the proton transfer process. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Aims: To determine the occurrence of isolated and recurrent episodes of conductive hearing loss (CHL) during the first two years of life in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants with and without bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).Study design, subjects and outcome measures: In a longitudinal clinical study. 187 children were evaluated at 6, 9, 12,15 18 and 24 months of age by visual reinforcement audiometry, tympanometry and auditory brain response system. Results: of the children with BPD, 54.5% presented with episodes of CHL, as opposed to 34.7% of the children without BPD. This difference was found to be statistically significant. The recurrent or persistent episodes were more frequent among children with BPD (25.7%) than among those without BPD (8.3%). The independent variables that contributed to this finding were small for gestational age and a 5 min Apgar score. Conclusions: Recurrent CHL episodes are more frequent among VLBW infants with BPD than among VLBW infants without BPD.
