Intermediate-band materials can improve the photovoltaic efficiency of solar cells through the absorption of two subband-gap photons that allow extra electron-hole pair formations. Previous theoretical and experimental findings support the proposal that the layered SnS2 compound, with a band-gap of around 2 eV, is a candidate for an intermediate-band material when it is doped with a specific transition-metal. In this work we characterize vanadium doped SnS2 using density functional theory at the dilution level experimentally found and including a dispersion correction combined with the site-occupancy-disorder method. In order to analyze the electronic characteristics that depend on geometry, two SnS2 polytypes partially substituted with vanadium in symmetry-adapted non-equivalent configurations were studied. In addition the magnetic configurations of vanadium in a SnS2 2H-polytype and its comparison with a 4H-polytype were also characterized. We demonstrate that a narrow intermediate-band is formed, when these dopant atoms are located in different layers. Our theoretical predictions confirm the recent experimental findings in which a paramagnetic intermediate-band material in a SnS2 2H-polytype with 10% vanadium concentration is obtained.

The present research work concerns the study of vertical vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) in bridges which show certain sensitivity to this type of aeroelastic phenomenon. It focuses on the analysis of the wind-structure interaction mechanism on bluff sections, with the objective of making a good characterisation of the problem and subsequently addressing the analysis of sections with a complex geometry, which are representative of the bridge structural elements, such as arches, decks, towers and piers. This issue is of relative importance during the bridge design phase, since minor details of the aforementioned elements can significantly influence its sensitivity to aerodynamic problems. The shape and main dimensions of the deck cross section, the addition of safety barriers and windshields, the presence of braces to enhance the structure mechanical properties, the utilisation of cross sections in tandem arrangement, or the erection of a new bridge in the vicinity of another existing one are some of the aspects to be considered regarding the sensitivity to the aeroelastic effects. The study has been carried out mainly through the implementation of numerical simulations that reproduces the interaction between the airflow and the representative cross section of a structural bridge model, by the use of a CFD code based on the vortex particle method (VPM), thus following a Lagrangian scheme. The results have been validated with existing experimental data, values from wind tunnel tests and full scale observations from the different case studies: Alconétar (2006), Niterói (1980), Trans-Tokyo Bay (1995) and Volgograd (2010). Finally, a new semi-empirical model is proposed for the estimation of the critical wind velocity ranges and oscillation amplitudes based on the use of the Scanlan’s flutter derivatives and the power spectral density of aerodynamic force time history in the frequency domain.

ABSTRACT Analyzing for structural response, traditionally it started from the assumption that joints are fully rigid or pinned. This criterion makes the design significantly easier, but it is also an idealization of real joint behaviour. As is to be expected, there is an almost endless range of stiffnes value between fully rigid and pinned joints, wich could be adopted. Joints with a value other than traditional are referred to generally as semi-rigid joints. If middle stiffness is considered, the structural design becomes much more complicated, however, it causes changes in the distribution of frame stresses, as well as on joints configuration, that under certain circumstances they may suppose an economic advantage. Two questions arise from the approach outlined in the preceding subparagraph, wich are the seeds of the doctoral thesis. These are: what happens when the concept of semirigid joints is applied to industrial buildings? There are certain stiffness values in their joints with which optimization of frame is achieved? This way, the main objective of the thesis arise, which is to know the influence of stiffness of joints in the cost of the steel frames with gabled roof, that they are typically used in industrial buildings. In order to achieve the proposed goal, a work methodology is proposed, which consists in essence in a study of a representative sample of frames under three load conditions: low, middle and high. Their range of spans comprises from 8 to 20 m and range of the height of columns cover from 3,5 to 10 m. Furthermore, it is considered that their joints can adopt intermediate values of stiffness. The result of the combination of different configurations options is 46.656 cases, which will be subject of study. Due to the economic aim of this work, a particular focus has been devoted for obtaining the execution cost of the different budget items that make up the structure, including those relating to joints. In order to do the structural calculations, count with a computing support has been indispensable, existing and created expressly for this purpose, which would allows its automation in a optimization context. The results of the study basically consist in a important amount of data, whose previous processing is necesary. This process is based on his systematic arrangement, in implementation of statistical techniques and in graphical representation. This give a catalogue of graphics, which depicts the whole cost of structure according to the different stiffness of its joints, a matrixes with the summary of results and a mathematical models which represent the function whole cost - stiffness of the joints. The most remarkable conclusions are: whole costs of the frames studied are minimum when the stiffness values of their joints are low, specifically 5•10³ a 10•10³ kN•m/rad; and the use of structures with semi-rigid joints and a suitable combination of their stiffness implyes an average economic advantage of 18% over other two typologies which are used typically in this kind of buildings; these are the rigid and bi-articulated frames.

In line with the development of "sustainability" extended to all fields of science, we are faced with the inevitable and ongoing deterioration of existing structures, leading nowadays to the necessary management of maintaining the service conditions and life time extension of bridges. As per the increased amounts of money that can be observed being spent in the countries with an extensive and strong tradition in the development of their infrastructure, the trend can be clearly recognized. The new tendencies turn more and more towards conservation and maintenance, reducing programmed expenses for new construction activities, in line with the already wellestablished territorial structures, as is the case for Spain. This significant heritage of established road infrastructure, consequently containing a vast number of structures, imminently lead to necessary management and maintenance of the including bridges. Under these conditions, this thesis focusses on the status of the development of the management implementation for bridges, current trends, and identifying areas for further development. This also includes the specific application to road networks with limited resources, beyond the national highways. In addition to analyzing the various training methodologies, inventory inspections and condition assessments of bridges, the main objective has been the development of a specific methodology. This methodology, in addition to the traditional system of structure and inspection database training criteria, sustains the classification for the entire road network, according to their condition. This allows, through optimization techniques, for the correct decision making by the technical managers of the network. Among the various methods for assessing the evolution forecast of deterioration of each bridge, a simplified bilinear envelope adjustment made empirical method and Markov models as the most effective solution to address the analysis of predicting the spread of damage, arising from a "technical snapshot" obtained through inspections of the condition of the bridges included in the investigated network. All theoretical basis reflected in the document, is completed by implementing a specific Bridges Management System (BMS), adapted according to the needs and limitations of the authorities for which it has been applied, being in this case particularly the General Highways Directorate of the autonomous region of Castilla-La Mancha, for a representative sample of all bridges in the network in the province of Albacete, starting from a situation where there is currently no formal bridge management system. After an analysis of the state of the art in Chapters 2 and 3, a new deterioration prediction model is developed in Chapter 4, "Deterioration Prediction Model". In the same way, to solve the optimization problem is proposed the use of a singular system of sequential optimization elected under Chapter 5, the "Evolutionary Algorithms", the most suitable mathematical tool to adequately distribute the economic resources for maintenance and conservation for mid-term budget planning. In Chapter 6, and in the various appendices, data and results are presented of the developed application for the analyzed local network, from the optimization model, which guarantees the correct allocation of scarce resources at the disposal of authorities responsible for the regional networks in Spain. The implementation of these systems is witnessed with particular interest for the Spanish secondary network, because of the increasing management responsibility, with decreasing resources. Chapter 7 presents a series of conclusions that triggers to reconsider shifting from theoretical studies and conferences towards a practical implementation, considering how to properly conceive the engineering input and the related education. The original contributions of the document are also listed. In the same way, the research on the Bridges Management System can help evaluating and improving the used systematics.

ABSTRACT Transport capacity is one of the critical points to evaluate the progress than a specific social and economical area is able to reach. This is a sector of high significance for the actual society. Included inside the most common types of transport, one of the means of transport which is elevating its use nowadays is the railway. Such as for passenger transport of weight movements, the train is being consolidated like a very useful mean of transport. Railways are installed in many geography areas. Everyone know train in cities, or connecting cities inside a surrounding area or even more often, taking into account the high-speed, there are railways infrastructure between cities separated with a long distance. This Ph.D work aims to help in the process to design one of the most essential steps in Installation Projects belonging to a railway system: Power Supply System. Design step of the railway power supply, usually confronts to several doubts and uncertainties, which must be solved with high accuracy. Capacity to supply power to the railway traffic depends on the success of this step. On the other hand is very important to manage the direct and indirect costs derived from Installation and Operation. With the Methodology is presented in this Thesis, it will be offered to the designer the possibility to handle an expert system that finally will fill a set of possible solutions. These solutions must be ready to work properly in the railway system, and they were tested using complex equation models. This Thesis has been developed through a research way, integrated inside Citef (Railway Research Centre of Technical University of Madrid). Among other projects and research ways, in Citef has been working in several validation studies and dimensioning of railway power supplies. It is been working by a large range of clients and railways systems. Along the accomplished Projects, the main goal has been rounded mostly about the next list of parameters of the electrical system: - Calculating number and location of traction substations. Power of each substation. - Type of Overhead contact line or catenary through the railway line. The wires which set up the catenary. Main Characteristics. - Calculating number and position of autotransformers for systems working in alternating current bi-voltage of called 2x25 kV. - Location of Neutral Zones. - Validating upon regulation of: o Drop voltages along the line o Maximum return voltages in the line o Overheating/overcurrent of the wires of the catenary o Avoiding overheating in the transformers of the traction substations. Main objective is that the solutions given by the Methodology, could be suggest scenarios where all of these parameters from above, would be between the limits established in the regulation. Having the choice to achieve a repository of possible good scenarios, where the parameters and electrical elements will be assigned like ready to work, that gives a great advance in terms of times and avoiding several tests. All of this would improve evidently the regular railway electrical systems process design. Direct costs referred to elements like traction substations, autotransformers, neutral zones, usually take up a great volume inside the general budget in railway systems. In this Thesis has been thought to bear in mind another kind of costs related to railway systems, also called indirect costs. These could be enveloped by those enmarked during installation and operation of electrical systems. Those derived from environmental impact; costs generated during the maintenance of the electrical elements and catenary; costs involved in the connection between traction substations and general electric grid; finally costs linked with the own installation of the whole electrical elements needed for the correct performance of the railway system. These are integrated inside the set has been collected taking into account own experience and research works. They are relevant to be controlled for our Methodology, just in case for the designers of this type of systems. The Methodology will cover the possibility that the final proposed power supply systems will be hold non-acceptable variations of costs, comparing with initial expected budgets, or directly assuming a threshold of budget for electrical elements in actual scenario, and achieving the cheapest in terms of commented costs from above. Analyzing direct and indirect costs, has been thought to divide their impact between two main categories. First one will be inside the Installation and the other category will comply with the costs often happens during Railway Operation time. These costs normally are opposed, that means when one is better the other turn into worse, in costs meaning. For this reason is necessary treating both objectives separately, in order to evaluate correctly the impact of each one into the final system. The objectives detailed before build the Methodology under three basic pillars: - Railway simulator Hamlet: This software has modules to configure many railway type of lines; mechanical and traction module to simulate the movement of rolling stock; signaling module; power supply module. This software has been developed using C++ and Matlab R13a - Previously has been mandatory to study how would be possible to work properly with a great number of feasible electrical systems. The target comprised the quick examination of these set of scenarios in terms of time. This point is talking about Maximum power demand peaks by railway operation plans. - Optimization algorithms. A railway infrastructure is a very complex system. At the beginning it was necessary to search about techniques and optimization algorithms, which could be adaptable to this complex system. Finally three genetic multiobjective algorithms were the chosen. Final decision was taken attending to reasons such as time complexity, able to multiobjective, easy to integrate in our problem and with a large application in engineering tasks. They are: NSGA-II, AMGA-II and ɛ-MOEA. - Designing objectives functions and equation model ready to work with the direct and indirect costs. The basic restrictions are not able to avoid, like budgetary or electrical, connected hardly with the recommended performance of elements, catenary and safety in a electrical railway systems. The battery of tests launched to the Methodology has been designed to be as real as possible. In fact, due to our work in Citef and with real Projects, has been integrated and configured three real railway lines, in order to evaluate correctly the final results collected by the Methodology. Another topic of our tests has been the comparison between the performances of the three algorithms chosen. Final step has been the comparison again with different possible good solutions, it means power supply system designs, provided by the Methodology, testing the validity of them. Once this work has been finished, the conclusions have been very satisfactory. Therefore this Thesis suggest a very interesting way of research and work, in terms of the results obtained and for the future opportunities can be created with the evolution of this. This Thesis has been developed with this idea in mind, so is expected this work could adhere another factor to work in the difficult task of validation and design of railway power supply systems.

In this paper, a rapid method for spacecraft sizing is presented. This method is useful in both the conceptual and preliminary design phases of scientific and communication satellites. The aim of this method is to provide a sizing procedure similar to the ones used in the design of aircraft; actually by determining the mass of all the spacecraft subsystems. In the Introduction, the importance of an accurate initial mass budget in the design of satellites is emphasized. Literature about this topic is not very extensive and most of the existing methods have been recapitulated. The methodology followed in the proposed procedure for spacecraft mass sizing is based on these methods. Data from 26 existing satellites have been considered to obtain correlations between each subsystem mass and the mass of the whole spacecraft.

Global biogeochemical models have improved dramatically in the last decade in their representation of the biosphere. Although leaf area data are an important input to such models and are readily available globally, global root distributions for modeling water and nutrient uptake and carbon cycling have not been available. This analysis provides global distributions for fine root biomass, length, and surface area with depth in the soil, and global estimates of nutrient pools in fine roots. Calculated root surface area is almost always greater than leaf area, more than an order of magnitude so in grasslands. The average C:N:P ratio in living fine roots is 450:11:1, and global fine root carbon is more than 5% of all carbon contained in the atmosphere. Assuming conservatively that fine roots turn over once per year, they represent 33% of global annual net primary productivity.

It is shown that the sequence-ordering tendencies induced by design into different fast-folding, thermally stable native structures interfere. This interference results in a type of quasiorthogonality between optimal native structures, which divides sequence space into fast-folding, thermally stable families surrounded by slow-folding, low stability shells. A concrete example of this effect is provided by using a simple α carbon type model in which a complete correspondence is established between sequence and structure. It is speculated that gaps can occur in the space of protein-like sequences separating the sequence families and resulting in a mechanism for stability and diversity of protein sequence information.

Point mutations were selectively introduced into a cDNA for guinea pig estrogen sulfotransferase (gpEST); each construct was then expressed in Chinese hamster ovary K1 cells. The molecular site chosen for study is a conserved GXXGXXK sequence that resembles the P-loop-type nucleotide-binding motif for ATP- and GTP-binding proteins and is located near the C terminus of all steroid and phenol(aryl) sulfotransferases for which the primary structures are known. Preliminary experiments demonstrated that the GXXGXXK motif is essential for binding the activated sulfonate donor 3'-phosphoadenosine 5'-phosphosulfate (PAPS). The present study was undertaken to ascertain the relative importance of each individual residue of the motif. While the mutation of a single motif residue had little effect on the interaction between gpEST and PAPS as determined by kinetic analysis and photoaffinity labeling, the mutation of any two residues in concert resulted in an approximate 10-fold increase in the Km for PAPS and reduced photoaffinity labeling. The mutation of all three motif residues resulted in an inactive enzyme and complete loss of photoaffinity labeling. Interestingly, several mutants also displayed a striking effect on the Km for the steroid substrate; double mutants, again, demonstrated greater perturbations (8- to 28-fold increase) than did single mutants. Unexpectedly, whereas the mutation of nonmotif residues had a negligible effect on the Km for PAPS, a marked increase in the Km for the estrogen substrate ( > 30-fold) was noted. On the basis of these findings, it is concluded that the sequence GISGDWKN within the C-terminal domain of gpEST represents a critical component of the active site.

An immunoglobulin light chain protein was isolated from the urine of an individual (BRE) with systemic amyloidosis. Complete amino acid sequence of the variable region of the light chain (VL) protein established it as a kappa I, which when compared with other kappa I amyloid associated proteins had unique residues, including Ile-34, Leu-40, and Tyr-71. To study the tertiary structure, BRE VL was expressed in Escherichia coli by using a PCR product amplified from the patient BRE's bone marrow DNA. The PCR product was ligated into pCZ11, a thermal-inducible replication vector. Recombinant BRE VL was isolated, purified to homogeneity, and crystallized by using ammonium sulfate as the precipitant. Two crystal forms were obtained. In crystal form I the BRE VL kappa domain crystallizes as a dimer with unit cell constants isomorphous to previously published kappa protein structures. Comparison with a nonamyloid VL kappa domain from patient REI, identified significant differences in position of residues in the hypervariable segments plus variations in framework region (FR) segments 40-46 (FR2) and 66-67 (FR3). In addition, positional differences can be seen along the two types of local diads, corresponding to the monomer-monomer and dimer-dimer interfaces. From the packing diagram, a model for the amyloid light chain (AL) fibril is proposed based on a pseudohexagonal spiral structure with a rise of approximately the width of two dimers per 360 degree turn. This spiral structure could be consistent with the dimensions of amyloid fibrils as determined by electron microscopy.

Utah lacks a NEPA-equivalent environmental law for state funded projects. UDOT policies provide guidance on complying with NEPA but not on environmental reviews of state funded transportation projects. These projects are either not evaluated for impacts or are evaluated without a formal process, resulting in inconsistent and inadequate consideration of resources and project alternatives, with limited public involvement. This capstone provides a standard policy for UDOT. The policy incorporates elements from other state DOT polices and is based on federal NEPA, CEQ regulations, FHWA technical guidance, and existing UDOT procedures. Implementation will ensure consideration of project impacts to resources, analysis of project alternatives, encourage meaningful public involvement, and improve interagency coordination.

The Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline (ANGP) is proposed for construction on the North Slope in 2016. It will be aligned through Arctic caribou habitat and evidence shows that caribou are negatively affected by human development. This Capstone identifies potential adverse affects of ANGP on Arctic caribou using interviews from expert caribou biologists and the 1977 Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) as a model. Based on a synthesis of the interviews and TAPS analysis, this capstone proposes and examines a set of seventeen conservation measures to be implemented during construction and operation of ANGP to minimize adverse impacts on caribou herds. These conservation measures can be used as a baseline for future developments on the North Slope to promote caribou herd management.

Many destination marketing organizations in the United States and elsewhere are facing budget retrenchment for tourism marketing, especially for advertising. This study evaluates a three-stage model using Random Coefficient Logit (RCL) approach which controls for correlations between different non-independent alternatives and considers heterogeneity within individual’s responses to advertising. The results of this study indicate that the proposed RCL model results in a significantly better fit as compared to traditional logit models, and indicates that tourism advertising significantly influences tourist decisions with several variables (age, income, distance and Internet access) moderating these decisions differently depending on decision stage and product type. These findings suggest that this approach provides a better foundation for assessing, and in turn, designing more effective advertising campaigns.

The aim of this commentary is to set out a priority research agenda which will make more systematic the evidence base about why investing in a range of 'public health assets' is important for population health. It will rehearse in brief some of the issues that have been raised over the past few years as experience has grown about how to apply the idea to public health practice.
