All-optical switching in a vertical coupler space switch employing photocarrier-induced nonlinearity

A novel compact integrated nonlinear optical switch is demonstrated. Using a high-power picosecond pulse of 5-ps pulsewidth and 250-MHz repetition rate, all-optical switching with a contrast ratio of 23 dB has been achieved using an in-fiber input power < 14 dBm (100 pJ/pulse). The switch speed depends on the carrier sweep-out time, which can be reduced to the 10 ps range by either applying a reverse bias or by introduction of carrier recombination centers in the active layer.

Optimizing the energy output of vertical axis wind turbines for fluctuating wind conditions

The control of a wind turbine to the mean wind speed in a gusty wind results in very poor performance. Fluctuations in wind speed with time constants shorter than the response time of a wind turbine results in operation away from optimum design conditions. The effectiveness of a turbine operating in a gusty wind is shown though the use of an unsteady performance coefficient, C e. This performance coefficient is similar in form to a power coefficient. However in order to accommodate unsteady effects, Ce is defined as a ratio of energy extracted to the total wind energy available over a set time period. The turbine's response to real wind data is modelled, in the first instance, by assuming a constant rotational speed operation. It is shown that a significant increase in energy production can be realized by demanding a Tip Speed Ratio above the steady state optimum. The constant speed model is then further extended to incorporate inertial and controller effects. Parameters dictating how well a turbine can track a demand in Tip Speed Ratio have been identified and combined, to form a non-dimensional turbine response parameter. This parameter characterizes a turbine's ability to track a demand in Tip Speed Ratio dependent on an effective gust frequency. A significant increase in energy output of 42% and 245% is illustrated through the application of this over-speed control. This is for the constant rotational speed and Tip Speed Ratio feedback models respectively. The affect of airfoil choice on energy extraction within a gusty wind has been considered. The adaptive control logic developed enables the application of airfoils demonstrating high maximum L/D values but sharp stalling characteristics to be successfully used in a VAWT design.

Vertical temperature structure of 250 m. water layer around Sri Lanka at the tail-end of the north-east monsoon

Data collected during cruises of the Hoyo Maru in Jan-Mar 1975 are analysed. Data is tabulated to show vertical temp profile, surface water temp and temp gradient. Each of these features is discussed. Thermoclines are shown to be established off the coast of India, their depth varying according to time of year. Upwelling off the Cochin coast is discussed. This occurs during Oct-Nov. Surface temp is considerably influenced by the north-east monsoon. The 'clockwise current' (or 'transparent current) characterised by high salinity, high transparency, and rich nutrient conchs, and which prevails in Jan-May brings oceanic water into the Bay of Bengal and sweeps along the Ceylon coast.

Activation mechanism of pre-phenoloxidase in lobster and shrimp

Phenoloxidase in shrimp and lobster is shown to exist in latent form which could be activated by trypsin and by an endogenous enzyme with tryptic activity. On Sephadex G-100 gel, three isoenzymes, differing in molecular weights, were isolated from naturally activated lobster shell extracts. Mechanism of activation of ptephenoloxidase involving limited proteolysis by the activating enzyme to form isoenzymes has been proposed.

A novel disintegrin, jerdonatin, inhibits platelet aggregation and sperm-egg binding

A novel disintegrin, jerdonatin, was purified to homogeneity from Trimeresurus jerdonii venom by gel filtration and reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography. We isolated the cDNA encoding jerdonatin from the snake venom gland. Jerdonatin cDNA precursor,;encoded pre-peptide, metalloprotease and disintegrin domain. Jerdonatin is composed of 72 amino acid residues including 12 cysteines and the tripeptide sequence Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD), a well-known characteristic of the disintegrin family. Molecular mass of jerdonatin was determined to be 8011 Da by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). Jerdonatin inhibited ADP- and collagen-induced human platelet aggregation with IC50 of 123 and 135 nM, respectively. We also investigated the effect of jerdonatin on the binding of B6D2F1 hybrid mice spermatozoa to mice zona-free eggs and their subsequent fusion. Jerdonatin significantly inhibited sperm-egg binding in a concentration-dependent manner, but had no effect on the fusion of sperm-egg. On the vertical distribution of seers and other commercially important fishes in the surface drift nets

This note highlights the author's attempts to determine the vertical height for catching seers (Scomberomorus sp.) and other commercially important fish off Kakinada coast.

Sampling plans for pre-packed fish and fish products

An outline is given of a sampling plan for prepacked fish products based on the net weight of the container, which may be used to make the inspection of fish and fish products easier and more effective.

Filtration in some tropical intertidal bivalves exposed to mercury and cadmium mixtures

Three species of intertidal filter feeding bivalves (Modiolus carvalhoi, Modiolus sp. and Donax spiculum) exposed to mercury and cadmium filtered significantly less volume of water under individual metal and metal mixture stress. Mercury and cadmium in mixtures interacted additively and more than additively (Synergism) in depressing the filtration rate of the bivalves.

Effect of pre-processing iced storage on deteriorative changes in lipids of silver pomfrets stored at -18°C

Silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) was frozen in the fresh condition as well as after holding in ice for one, two and four days. Evaluation of changes in the quality of these samples during storage at -18°C has shown that shelf-life decreased sharply if the pre-freezing iced storage was more than one day. The shelf-life of one day iced, two day iced and four day iced frozen samples were 32, 20 and 16 weeks respectively. No correlation was observed between the peroxide value and the organoleptic detection of rancid flavour. Levels of free fatty acids were more in the samples frozen after storage in ice for one day than in all the other samples.
