The monopole (L=0) and quadrupole (L=2) strength distributions in normal 3He clusters are calculated within the random-phase approximation. We use a phenomenological, zero-range 3-3He interaction to generate the Hartree-Fock single-particle spectrum and the residual particle-hole interaction. The evolution of the collective modes with the number of atoms in the cluster is discussed.

The BatalinVilkovisky formalism is studied in the framework of perturbation theory by analyzing the antibracket BecchiRouetStoraTyutin (BRST) cohomology of the proper solution S0. It is concluded that the recursive equations for the complete proper solution S can be solved at any order of perturbation theory. If certain conditions on the classical action and on the gauge generators are imposed the solution can be taken local.

Starting from a recent model of the η′N interaction, we evaluate the η ′-nucleus optical potential, including the contribution of lowest order in density, tρ/2mη′, together with the second-order terms accounting for η′ absorption by two nucleons. We also calculate the formation cross section of the η′bound states from (π, p) reactions on nuclei. The η′-nucleus potential suffers from uncertainties tied to the poorly known η′N interaction, which can be partially constrained by the experimental modulus of the η′N scattering length and/or the recently measured transparency ratios in η′nuclear photoproduction. Assuming an attractive interaction and taking the claimed experimental value |aη′N|= 0.1 fm, we obtain an η′optical potential in nuclear matter at saturation density of Vη′=−(8.7 + 1.8i) MeV, not attractive enough to produce η′bound states in light nuclei. Larger values of the scattering length give rise to deeper optical potentials, with moderate enough imaginary parts. For a value |aη′N|= 0.3 fm, which can still be considered to lie within the uncertainties of the experimental constraints, the spectra of light and medium nuclei show clear structures associated to η′-nuclear bound states and to threshold enhancements in the unbound region.

The photoproduction of η′η′-mesons off different nuclei has been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system for incident photon energies between 15002200 MeV. The transparency ratio has been deduced and compared to theoretical calculations describing the propagation of η′η′-mesons in nuclei. The comparison indicates a width of the η′η′-meson of the order of Γ=1525 MeVΓ=1525 MeV at ρ=ρ0ρ=ρ0 for an average momentum pη′=1050 MeV/cpη′=1050 MeV/c, at which the η′η′-meson is produced in the nuclear rest frame. The inelastic η′Nη′N cross section is estimated to be 310 mb. Parameterizing the photoproduction cross section of η′η′-mesons by σ(A)=σ0Aασ(A)=σ0Aα, a value of α=0.84±0.03α=0.84±0.03 has been deduced.

We analyze the influence of the density dependence of the symmetry energy on the average excitation energy of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) in stable and exotic neutron-rich nuclei by applying the relativistic extended Thomas-Fermi method in scaling and constrained calculations. For the effective nuclear interaction, we employ the relativistic mean field model supplemented by an isoscalar-isovector meson coupling that allows one to modify the density dependence of the symmetry energy without compromising the success of the model for binding energies and charge radii. The semiclassical estimates of the average energy of the GMR are known to be in good agreement with the results obtained in full RPA calculations. The present analysis is performed along the Pb and Zr isotopic chains. In the scaling calculations, the excitation energy is larger when the symmetry energy is softer. The same happens in the constrained calculations for nuclei with small and moderate neutron excess. However, for nuclei of large isospin the constrained excitation energy becomes smaller in models having a soft symmetry energy. This effect is mainly due to the presence of loosely-bound outer neutrons in these isotopes. A sharp increase of the estimated width of the resonance is found in largely neutron-rich isotopes, even for heavy nuclei, which is enhanced when the symmetry energy of the model is soft. The results indicate that at large neutron numbers the structure of the low-energy region of the GMR strength distribution changes considerably with the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy, which may be worthy of further characterization in RPA calculations of the response function.

We derive analytical expressions for the excitation energy of the isoscalar giant monopole and quadrupole resonances in finite nuclei, by using the scaling method and the extended ThomasFermi approach to relativistic mean-field theory. We study the ability of several nonlinear σω parameter sets of common use in reproducing the experimental data. For monopole oscillations the calculations agree better with experiment when the nuclear matter incompressibility of the relativistic interaction lies in the range 220260 MeV. The breathing-mode energies of the scaling method compare satisfactorily with those obtained in relativistic RPA and time-dependent mean-field calculations. For quadrupole oscillations, all the analyzed nonlinear parameter sets reproduce the empirical trends reasonably well.

By using the scaling method we derive the virial theorem for the relativistic mean field model of nuclei treated in the ThomasFermi approach. The ThomasFermi solutions statisfy the stability condition against scaling. We apply the formalism to study the excitation energy of the breathing mode in finite nuclei with several relativistic parameter sets of common use.

In this paper, a remote O2 ion source is used for the formation of nano-oxide layers. The oxidation efficiency was measured in CoFe-oxide films, and a decrease of the oxide layer with the pan angle and the oxidation pressure is observed. For the same oxidation pressure, the oxidation efficiency depends on the O2 content in the Ar-O2 plasma. These results were applied in optimizing the fabrication of Al2O3 barrier for tunnel junctions. This method was also used to fabricate junctions with Fe-oxide layers inserted at the Al2O3-CoFe interface. TEM and magnetization data indicate that after anneal at 385°C, a homogeneous ferromagnetic Fe-oxide layer (Fe3O4?) is formed.

We study the collision of a gravitational wave pulse and a soliton wave on a spatially homogeneous background. This collision is described by an exact solution of Einsteins equations in a vacuum which is generated from a nondiagonal seed by means of a soliton transformation. The effect produced by the soliton on the amplitude and polarization of the wave is considered.
