We apply the method of multiple scales (MMS) to a well-known model of regenerative cutting vibrations in the large delay regime. By ``large'' we mean the delay is much larger than the timescale of typical cutting tool oscillations. The MMS up to second order, recently developed for such systems, is applied here to study tool dynamics in the large delay regime. The second order analysis is found to be much more accurate than the first order analysis. Numerical integration of the MMS slow flow is much faster than for the original equation, yet shows excellent accuracy in that plotted solutions of moderate amplitudes are visually near-indistinguishable. The advantages of the present analysis are that infinite dimensional dynamics is retained in the slow flow, while the more usual center manifold reduction gives a planar phase space; lower-dimensional dynamical features, such as Hopf bifurcations and families of periodic solutions, are also captured by the MMS; the strong sensitivity of the slow modulation dynamics to small changes in parameter values, peculiar to such systems with large delays, is seen clearly; and though certain parameters are treated as small (or, reciprocally, large), the analysis is not restricted to infinitesimal distances from the Hopf bifurcation.

This thesis presents ab initio studies of two kinds of physical systems, quantum dots and bosons, using two program packages of which the bosonic one has mainly been developed by the author. The implemented models, \emph{i.e.}, configuration interaction (CI) and coupled cluster (CC) take the correlated motion of the particles into account, and provide a hierarchy of computational schemes, on top of which the exact solution, within the limit of the single-particle basis set, is obtained. The theory underlying the models is presented in some detail, in order to provide insight into the approximations made and the circumstances under which they hold. Some of the computational methods are also highlighted. In the final sections the results are summarized. The CI and CC calculations on multiexciton complexes in self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots are presented and compared, along with radiative and non-radiative transition rates. Full CI calculations on quantum rings and double quantum rings are also presented. In the latter case, experimental and theoretical results from the literature are re-examined and an alternative explanation for the reported photoluminescence spectra is found. The boson program is first applied on a fictitious model system consisting of bosonic electrons in a central Coulomb field for which CI at the singles and doubles level is found to account for almost all of the correlation energy. Finally, the boson program is employed to study Bose-Einstein condensates confined in different anisotropic trap potentials. The effects of the anisotropy on the relative correlation energy is examined, as well as the effect of varying the interaction potential.}

Hybrid monolayer arrays of metal and semiconductor quantum dots have been prepared to study the exciton-plasmon interaction. We observed crossover from strong quenching to enhancement in photoluminescence of the quantum dots as a function of the emission wavelength for fixed interparticle spacings. Remarkably, the enhancement is observed even for extremely short separation at which strong quenching has been observed and predicted earlier. A significant redshift in emission maxima is also observed for quantum dots with quenched emission. The possible role of collective phenomena as well as strong interactions in such ordered hybrid arrays in controlling the emission is discussed. The mechanism of folding of the small protein barstar in the pre-transition zone at pH 7, 25 degrees C has been characterized using rapid mixing techniques. Earlier studies had established the validity of the three-state U-S reversible arrow U-F reversible arrow N mechanism for folding and unfolding in the presence of guanidine hydrochloride (GdnHCl) at concentrations greater than 2.0 M, where U-S and U-F are the slow-refolding and fast-refolding unfolded forms, respectively, and N is the fully folded form. It is now shown that early intermediates, I-S1 and I-S2 as well as a late native-like intermediate, I-N, are present on the folding pathways of U-S, and an early intermediate I-F1 on the folding pathway of U-F, when bars tar is refolded in concentrations of GdnHCl below 2.0 M. The rates of formation and disappearance of I-N, and the rates of formation of N at three different concentrations of GdnHCl in the pre-transition zone have been measured. The data indicate that in 1.5 M GdnHCl, I-N is not fully populated on the U-S --> I-S1 --> I-N --> N pathway because the rate of its formation is so slow that the U-S reversible arrow U-F reversible arrow N pathway can effectively compete with that pathway. In 1.0 M GdnHCl, the U-S --> I-S1 --> I-N transition is so fast that I-N is fully populated. In 0.6 M GdnHCl, I-N appears not to be fully populated because an alternative folding pathway, U-S --> I-S2 --> N, becomes available for the folding of U-S, in addition to the U-S --> I-S1 --> I-N --> N pathway Measurement of the binding of the hydrophobic dye 1-anilino-8-naphthalenesulphonate (ANS) during folding indicates that ANS binds to two distinct intermediates, I-M1 and I-M2, that form within 2 ms on the U-S --> I-M1 --> I-S1 --> I-N --> N and U-S --> I-M2 --> I-S2 --> N pathways. There is no evidence for the accumulation of intermediates that can bind ANS on the folding pathway of U-F.

In this paper we consider the problem of learning an n × n kernel matrix from m(1) similarity matrices under general convex loss. Past research have extensively studied the m = 1 case and have derived several algorithms which require sophisticated techniques like ACCP, SOCP, etc. The existing algorithms do not apply if one uses arbitrary losses and often can not handle m > 1 case. We present several provably convergent iterative algorithms, where each iteration requires either an SVM or a Multiple Kernel Learning (MKL) solver for m > 1 case. One of the major contributions of the paper is to extend the well knownMirror Descent(MD) framework to handle Cartesian product of psd matrices. This novel extension leads to an algorithm, called EMKL, which solves the problem in O(m2 log n 2) iterations; in each iteration one solves an MKL involving m kernels and m eigen-decomposition of n × n matrices. By suitably defining a restriction on the objective function, a faster version of EMKL is proposed, called REKL,which avoids the eigen-decomposition. An alternative to both EMKL and REKL is also suggested which requires only an SVMsolver. Experimental results on real world protein data set involving several similarity matrices illustrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithms.

Experimental realization of quantum information processing in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been well established. Implementation of conditional phase-shift gate has been a significant step, which has lead to realization of important algorithms such as Grover's search algorithm and quantum Fourier transform. This gate has so far been implemented in NMR by using coupling evolution method. We demonstrate here the implementation of the conditional phase-shift gate using transition selective pulses. As an application of the gate, we demonstrate Grover's search algorithm and quantum Fourier transform by simulations and experiments using transition selective pulses. The capacity region of a two-user Gaussian Multiple Access Channel (GMAC) with complex finite input alphabets and continuous output alphabet is studied. When both the users are equipped with the same code alphabet, it is shown that, rotation of one of the user’s alphabets by an appropriate angle can make the new pair of alphabets not only uniquely decodable, but will result in enlargement of the capacity region. For this set-up, we identify the primary problem to be finding appropriate angle(s) of rotation between the alphabets such that the capacity region is maximally enlarged. It is shown that the angle of rotation which provides maximum enlargement of the capacity region also minimizes the union bound on the probability of error of the sumalphabet and vice-verse. The optimum angle(s) of rotation varies with the SNR. Through simulations, optimal angle(s) of rotation that gives maximum enlargement of the capacity region of GMAC with some well known alphabets such as M-QAM and M-PSK for some M are presented for several values of SNR. It is shown that for large number of points in the alphabets, capacity gains due to rotations progressively reduce. As the number of points N tends to infinity, our results match the results in the literature wherein the capacity region of the Gaussian code alphabet doesn’t change with rotation for any SNR.

In many wireless applications, it is highly desirable to have a fast mechanism to resolve or select the packet from the user with the highest priority. Furthermore, individual priorities are often known only locally at the users. In this paper we introduce an extremely fast, local-information-based multiple access algorithm that selects the best node in 1.8 to 2.1 slots,which is much lower than the 2.43 slot average achieved by the best algorithm known to date. The algorithm, which we call Variable Power Multiple Access Selection (VP-MAS), uses the local channel state information from the accessing nodes to the receiver, and maps the priorities into the receive power.It is inherently distributed and scales well with the number of users. We show that mapping onto a discrete set of receive power levels is optimal, and provide a complete characterization for it. The power levels are chosen to exploit packet capture that inherently occurs in a wireless physical layer. The VP-MAS algorithm adjusts the expected number of users that contend in each step and their respective transmission powers, depending on whether previous transmission attempts resulted in capture,idle channel, or collision.

Automated synthesis of mechanical designs is an important step towards the development of an intelligent CAD system. Research into methods for supporting conceptual design using automated synthesis has attracted much attention in the past decades. The research work presented here is based on the processes of synthesizing multiple state mechanical devices carried out individually by ten engineering designers. The designers are asked to think aloud, while carrying out the synthesis. The ten design synthesis processes are video recorded, and the records are transcribed and coded for identifying activities occurring in the synthesis processes, as well as for identifying the inputs to and outputs from the activities. A mathematical representation for specifying multi-state design task is proposed. Further, a descriptive model capturing all the ten synthesis processes is developed and presented in this paper. This will be used to identify the outstanding issues to be resolved before a system for supporting design synthesis of multiple state mechanical devices that is capable of creating a comprehensive variety of solution alternatives could be developed.

We construct a quantum random walk algorithm, based on the Dirac operator instead of the Laplacian. The algorithm explores multiple evolutionary branches by superposition of states, and does not require the coin toss instruction of classical randomised algorithms. We use this algorithm to search for a marked vertex on a hypercubic lattice in arbitrary dimensions. Our numerical and analytical results match the scaling behaviour of earlier algorithms that use a coin toss instruction.

Computations have been carried out for simulating supersonic flow through a set of converging-diverging nozzles with their expanding jets forming a laser cavity and flow patterns through diffusers, past the cavity. A thorough numerical investigation with 3-D RANS code is carried out to capture the flow distribution which comprises of shock patterns and multiple supersonic jet interactions. The analysis of pressure recovery characteristics during the flow through the diffusers is an important parameter of the simulation and is critical for the performance of the laser device. The results of the computation have shown a close agreement with the experimentally measured parameters as well as other established results indicating that the flow analysis done is found to be satisfactory.

InN quantum dots (QDs) were grown on Si (111) by epitaxial Stranski-Krastanow growth mode using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Single-crystalline wurtzite structure of InN QDs was verified by the x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Scanning tunneling microscopy has been used to probe the structural aspects of QDs. A surface bandgap of InN QDs was estimated from scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) I-V curves and found that it is strongly dependent on the size of QDs. The observed size-dependent STS bandgap energy shifts with diameter and height were theoretical explained based on an effective mass approximation with finite-depth square-well potential model.

We present a simplified theoretical formulation of the Fowler-Nordheim field emission (FNFE) under magnetic quantization and also in quantum wires of optoelectronic materials on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion law in the presence of strong electric field within the framework of k.p formalism taking InAs, InSb, GaAs, Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te and In(1-x)Ga(x) As(y)P(1-y) lattice matched to InP as examples. The FNFE exhibits oscillations with inverse quantizing magnetic field and electron concentration due to SdH effect and increases with increasing electric field. For quantum wires the FNFE increases with increasing film thickness due to the existence van-Hove singularity and the magnitude of the quantum jumps are not of same height indicating the signature of the band structure of the material concerned. The appearance of the humps of the respective curves is due to the redistribution of the electrons among the quantized energy levels when the quantum numbers corresponding to the highest occupied level changes from one fixed value to the others. Although the field current varies in various manners with all the variables in all the limiting cases as evident from all the curves, the rates of variations are totally band-structure dependent. Under certain limiting conditions, all the results as derived in this paper get transformed in to well known Fowler-Nordheim formula. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We study the scaling behavior of the fidelity (F) in the thermodynamic limit using the examples of a system of Dirac fermions in one dimension and the Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice. We show that the thermodynamic fidelity inside the gapless as well as gapped phases follow power-law scalings, with the power given by some of the critical exponents of the system. The generic scaling forms of F for an anisotropic quantum critical point for both the thermodynamic and nonthermodynamic limits have been derived and verified for the Kitaev model. The interesting scaling behavior of F inside the gapless phase of the Kitaev model is also discussed. Finally, we consider a rotation of each spin in the Kitaev model around the z axis and calculate F through the overlap between the ground states for the angle of rotation eta and eta + d eta, respectively. We thereby show that the associated geometric phase vanishes. We have supplemented our analytical calculations with numerical simulations wherever necessary.
