Mechanical properties of thin films such as residual stress and hardness are of paramount importance from the device fabrication point of view. Intrinsic stress in sputtered films can be tensile or compressive as decided by the number density and the energy of the plasma species striking the growing film. In the presence of hydrogen we analyzed the applicability of idealized stress reversal curve for amorphous silicon thin films deposited by DC, pulsed DC (PDC) and RF sputtering. We are successfully able to correlate the microstructure with the stress reversal and hardness. We observed a stress reversal from compressive to tensile with hydrogen incorporation. It was found that unlike in idealized stress reversal curve case, though the energy of plasma species is less in DC plasma, DC deposited films exhibit more compressive stress, followed by PDC and RF deposited films. A tendency towards tensile stress from compressive stress was observed at similar to 13, 18 and 23 at%H for DC, PDC and RF deposited films respectively, which is in exact agreement with the vacancy to void transition in the films. Regardless of the sputtering power mode, the hardness of a-Si:H films is found to be maximum at C-H similar to 10 at%H. Enhancement in hardness with C-H (up to C-H similar to 10 at%H) is attributed to increase of Si-H bonds. Beyond C-H similar to 10 at%H, hardness starts falling. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Heat exchanger design plays a significant role in the performance of solid state hydrogen storage device. In the present study, a cylindrical hydrogen storage device with an embedded annular heat exchanger tube with radial circular copper fins, is considered. A 3-D mathematical model of the storage device is developed to investigate the sorption performance of metal hydride (MH). A prototype of the device is fabricated for 1 kg of MH alloy, LaNi5, and tested at constant supply pressure of hydrogen, validating the simulation results. Absorption characteristics of storage device have been examined by varying different operating parameters such as hydrogen supply pressure and cooling fluid temperature and velocity. Absorption process is completed in 18 min when these parameters are 15 bar, 298 K and 1 m/s respectively. A study of geometric parameters of copper fins (such as perforation, number and thickness of fin) has been carried out to investigate their effects on absorption process. Thermal desorption spectroscopy and nanoindentation techniques were employed to elucidate the key differences in the hydrogen (H) charging methods (electrochemical versus gaseous) and their consequences on the mechanical response of a low carbon steel. While electrochemical charging enhances the hardness, gaseous charging reduces it. This contrasting behavior is rationalized in terms of the dependency of the strength on the absorbed amount of H during charging and the H concentration gradient in the specimen. Hydrogen, either in pure form or as a gaseous fuel mixture specie enhances the fuel conversion efficiency and reduce emissions in an internal combustion engine. This is due to the reduction in combustion duration attributed to higher laminar flame speeds. Hydrogen is also expected to increase the engine convective heat flux, attributed (directly or indirectly) to parameters like higher adiabatic flame temperature, laminar flame speed, thermal conductivity and diffusivity and lower flame quenching distance. These factors (adversely) affect the thermo-kinematic response and offset some of the benefits. The current work addresses the influence of mixture hydrogen fraction in syngas on the engine energy balance and the thermo-kinematic response for close to stoichiometric operating conditions. Four different bio-derived syngas compositions with fuel calorific value varying from 3.14 MJ/kg to 7.55 MJ/kg and air fuel mixture hydrogen fraction varying from 7.1% to 14.2% by volume are used. The analysis comprises of (a) use of chemical kinetics simulation package CHEMKIN for quantifying the thermo-physical properties (b) 0-D model for engine in-cylinder analysis and (c) in-cylinder investigations on a two-cylinder engine in open loop cooling mode for quantifying the thermo-kinematic response and engine energy balance. With lower adiabatic flame temperature for Syngas, the in-cylinder heat transfer analysis suggests that temperature has little effect in terms of increasing the heat flux. For typical engine like conditions (700 K and 25 bar at CR of 10), the laminar flame speed for syngas exceeds that of methane (55.5 cm/s) beyond mixture hydrogen fraction of 11% and is attributed to the increase in H based radicals. This leads to a reduction in the effective Lewis number and laminar flame thickness, potentially inducing flame instability and cellularity. Use of a thermodynamic model to assess the isolated influence of thermal conductivity and diffusivity on heat flux suggests an increase in the peak heat flux between 2% and 15% for the lowest (0.420 MW/m(2)) and highest (0.480 MW/m(2)) hydrogen containing syngas over methane (0.415 MW/m(2)) fueled operation. Experimental investigations indicate the engine cooling load for syngas fueled engine is higher by about 7% and 12% as compared to methane fueled operation; the losses are seen to increase with increasing mixture hydrogen fraction. Increase in the gas to electricity efficiency is observed from 18% to 24% as the mixture hydrogen fraction increases from 7.1% to 9.5%. Further increase in mixture hydrogen fraction to 14.2% results in the reduction of efficiency to 23%; argued due to the changes in the initial and terminal stages of combustion. On doubling of mixture hydrogen fraction, the flame kernel development and fast burn phase duration decrease by about 7% and 10% respectively and the terminal combustion duration, corresponding to 90%-98% mass burn, increases by about 23%. This increase in combustion duration arises from the cooling of the near wall mixture in the boundary layer attributed to the presence of hydrogen. The enhancement in engine cooling load and subsequent reduction in the brake thermal efficiency with increasing hydrogen fraction is evident from the engine energy balance along with the cumulative heat release profiles. If a deuterated molecule containing strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds is placed in a hydrogenated solvent, it may preferentially exchange deuterium for hydrogen. This preference is due to the difference between the vibrational zero-point energy for hydrogen and deuterium. It is found that the associated fractionation factor (I) is correlated with the strength of the intramolecular hydrogen bonds. This correlation has been used to determine the length of the H-bonds (donor-acceptor separation) in a diverse range of enzymes and has been argued to support the existence of short low-barrier H-bonds. Starting with a potential energy surface based on a simple diabatic state model for H-bonds, we calculate (I) as a function of the proton donor-acceptor distance R. For numerical results, we use a parameterization of the model for symmetric 0-H. ``.0 bonds R. H. McKenzie, Chem. Phys. Lett. 535, 196 (2012)]. We consider the relative contributions of the 0-H stretch vibration, O-H bend vibrations (both in plane and out of plane), tunneling splitting effects at finite temperature, and the secondary geometric isotope effect. We compare our total (I) as a function of R with NMR experimental results for enzymes, and in particular with an earlier model parametrization (D(R), used previously to determine bond lengths. Finite element analysis has been carried out to obtain temperature dependent transversely isotropic properties of the single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Finite element models of SWCNTs are generated by specifying the C-C bond rigidities. The five independent transversely isotropic properties for different chiralities are evaluated using the stress fields of thick-walled cylinders and the elastic deformations of SWCNTs subjected to pure extension, internal pressure and pure torsion loads. Empirical relations are provided for the five independent elastic constants useful to armchair and zigzag SWCNTs.

Computational study of X-Ha <-C and C-Ha <-X hydrogen bonds in n-alkane-HX complexes (X =F,OH, alkane =propane, butane, pentane) has been carried out in this work. Ab initio and density functional theories were used for this study. For n-alkane-H2O complexes both Oa <-H-C and O-Ha <-C hydrogen bonded complex have been found, while for n-alkane-HF complexes, our attempt to optimize Fa <-H-C H-bond was not successful. Like most of the hydrogen bonded systems, strong correlation between binding energy and stretching frequency of H-F and O-H stretching mode was observed. The values of electron density and Laplacian of electron density are within the accepted range for hydrogen bonds. In all these cases, X-Ha <-C hydrogen bonds are found to be stronger than C-Ha <-X hydrogen bonds.

It has been shown earlier1] that the relaxed force constants (RFCs) could be used as a measure of bond strength only when the bonds form a part of the complete valence internal coordinates (VIC) basis. However, if the bond is not a part of the complete VIC basis, its RFC is not necessarily a measure of bond strength. Sometimes, it is possible to have a complete VIC basis that does not contain the intramolecular hydrogen bond (IMHB) as part of the basis. This means the RFC of IMHB is not necessarily a measure of bond strength. However, we know that IMHB is a weak bond and hence its RFC has to be a measure of bond strength. We resolve this problem of IMHB not being part of the complete basis by postulating `equivalent' basis sets where IMHB is part of the basis at least in one of the equivalent sets of VIC. As long as a given IMHB appears in one of the equivalent complete VIC basis sets, its RFC could be used as a measure of bond strength parameter.

This paper presents an analysis of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with dry cooling system aided by an earth-coupled passive cooling system. Several organic fluids were considered as working fluids in the ORC in the temperature range of 125-200 degrees C. An earth-air-heat-exchanger (EMU) is studied for a location in the United States (Las Vegas) and another in India (New Delhi), to pre cool the ambient air before entering an air-cooled condenser (ACC). It was observed that the efficiency of the system improved by 1-3% for the system located in Las Vegas and fluctuations associated with temperature variations of the ambient air were also reduced when the EAHE system was used. A ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) is also studied for these locations where cooling water is pre cooled in an underground buried pipe before entering a condenser heat exchanger in a closed loop. The area of the buried pipe and the condenser size are calculated per kW of power generation for various working fluids.

Turbine inlet pressures of similar to 300 bar in case of CO2 based cycles call for redesigning the cycle in such a way that the optimum high side pressures are restricted to the discharge pressure limits imposed by currently available commercial compressors (similar to 150 bar) for distributed power generation. This leads to a cycle which is a combination of a transcritical condensing and a subcritical cycle with an intercooler and a bifurcation system in it. Using a realistic thermodynamic model, it is predicted that the cycle with the working fluid as a non-flammable mixture of 48.5 % propane and rest CO2 delivers similar to 37.2 % efficiency at 873 K with a high and a low side pressure of 150 and 26 bar respectively. This is in contrast to the best efficiency of similar to 36.1 % offered by a transcritical condensing cycle with the same working fluid at a high side pressure of similar to 300 bar

This paper reports microwave spectroscopic and theoretical investigations on the interaction of water with hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP). The HFIP monomer can exist in two conformations, antiperiplanar (AP) and synclinical (SC). The former is about 5 kJ mol(-1) more stable than the latter. Theoretical calculations predicted three potential minima for the complex, two having AP and one having SC conformations. Though, the binding energy for the HFIP(SC)...H2O turned out to be larger than that for the other two conformers having HFIP in the AP form, the global minimum for the complex in the potential energy hypersurface had HFIP in the AP form. Experimental rotational constants for four isotopologues measured using a pulsed nozzle Fourier transform microwave spectrometer, correspond to the global minimum in the potential energy hypersurface. The structural parameters and the internal dynamics of the complex could be determined from the rotational spectra of the four isotopologues. The global minimum has the HFIP(AP) as a hydrogen bond donor forming a strong hydrogen bond with H2O. To characterize the strength of the bonding and to probe the other interactions within the complex, atoms in molecules, non-covalent interaction index and natural bond orbital theoretical analyses have been performed.

A new class of dendrimers, the poly(propyl ether imine) (PETIM) dendrimer, has been shown to be a novel hyperbranched polymer having potential applications as a drug delivery vehicle. Structure and dynamics of the amine terminated PETIM dendrimer and their changes with respect to the dendrimer generation are poorly understood. Since most drugs are hydrophobic in nature, the extent of hydrophobicity of the dendrimer core is related to its drug encapsulation and retention efficacy. In this study, we carry out fully atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to characterize the structure of PETIM (G2-G6) dendrimers in salt solution as a function of dendrimer generation at different protonation levels. Structural properties such as radius of gyration (R-g), radial density distribution, aspect ratio, and asphericity are calculated. In order to assess the hydrophilicity of the dendrimer, we compute the number of bound water molecules in the interior of dendrirner as well as the number of dendrimer-water hydrogen bonds. We conclude that PETIM dendrimers have relatively greater hydrophobicity and flexibility when compared with their extensively investigated PAMAM counterparts. Hence PETIM dendrimers are expected to have stronger interactions with lipid membranes as well as improved drug encapsulation and retention properties when compared with PAMAM dendrimers. We compute the root-mean-square fluctuation of dendrimers as well as their entropy to quantify the flexibility of the dendrimer. Finally we note that structural and solvation properties computed using force field parameters derived based on the CHARMM general purpose force field were in good quantitative agreement with those obtained using the generalized Amber force field (GAFF).

The rare occurrence of intramolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs) of the type N-H center dot center dot center dot F-C is detected in the derivatives of imides in a low polarity solvent by using multi-dimensional and multinuclear NMR experiments. The observation of (1h)J(FH), (2h)J(FN), and (2h)J(FF), where the spin magnetization is transmitted through space among the interacting NMR active nuclei, provided strong and unambiguous evidence for the existence of intra-molecular HBs. The variation in the chemical shifts of labile protons depending on physical conditions, such as the solvent dilution and the systematic alteration of temperature confirmed the presence of weak interactions through intramolecular HBs in all the investigated fluorine substituted molecules. The self or cross dimerization of molecules is unequivocally discarded by the analysis of the rates of diffusion obtained using pseudo-two dimensional DOSY experiments. The Density Function Theory (DFT) calculations based on the Quantum Theory of Atoms In Molecules (QTAIM) and Non Covalent Interaction (NCI), are in close agreement with the NMR experimental findings.

Rates of hydrogen/deuterium (H/D) exchange determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy are utilized to derive the strength of hydrogen bonds and to monitor the electronic effects in the site-specific halogen substituted benzamides and anilines. The theoretical fitting of the time dependent variation of the integral areas of H-1 NMR resonances to the first order decay function permitted the determination of HID exchange rate constants (k) and their precise half-lives (t(1/2)) with high degree of reproducibility. The comparative study also permitted the unambiguous determination of relative strength of hydrogen bonds and the contribution from electronic effects on the HID exchange rate. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
