We describe in the letter a technique for making extended-range interferometric measurements with a coherence multiplexed system by means of a variation on the dual-wavelength technique. The interferometer is illuminated with a single source and the two wavelengths are synthesised at the output by means of an interference filter.

We describe a frequency-modulation technique that is applicable to two-beam interferometric systems illuminated by semiconductor diode lasers. The technique permits a determination of the optical path difference between the two arms of the interferometer and is used here to extend the range of a fiber polarimetric strain sensor by determining the order of the particular polarimetric fringe under consideration.

The limbal vascular response to extended contact lens wear was examined in a group comparative study initially intended to last eighteen months. After six months all patients wearing contact lenses had presented with micro-epithelial cysts. This unanticipated occurrence of the micro-epithelial-cysts necessitated termination of the study, and limited the quantity of data collected. However, sufficient results were available to allow a limited description of •the vascular response to this form of contact lens wear. Interpretations of the date collected ore discussed in relation to suggested vasostimulating factors in the cornea. The micro-epithelial cysts observed after extended wear were classified and their rate of recovery recorded. A further clinical study was undertaken to observe cysts in both contact lens - and non contact lens-wearing eyes. Cysts were observed in every category of patient, although the characteristic patterns varied. These observations of micro-epithelial cysts are discussed with respect to the aetiopathogeneses of corneal epithelial cystic disorders. Subsequently, attempts were made to induce cysts in rabbit corneae by extended contact lens wear. Clinical observations revealed cyst-like appearances. Histological sections did not contain cysts but did exhibit signs characteristic •of cystic disorders of the corneal epithelium. In general, the results from the study indicate that extended wear is subjectively acceptable to contact lens wearers. However, the objective findings of significant vascular changes, micro-epithelial cysts and cases of acute red eye response cast considerable doubt on the recommendation of extended wear contact lenses for purely cosmetic applications.

We describe an all-fibre, passive scheme for making extended range interferometric measurements based on the dual wavelength technique. The coherence tuned interferometer network is illuminated with a single superfluorescent fibre source at 1.55 μm and the two wavelengths are synthesised at the output by means of chirped fibre Bragg gratings. We demonstrate an unambiguous sensing range of 270 μm, with a dynamic range of 2.7 × 105.

A technique for interrogating multiplexed fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors using an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is described. The approach considerably extends the sensing range from that achieved previously, while providing a strain resolution of 17nε/√Hz at 30 Hz.

Aims: To investigate the utility of an extended Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), including descriptive norms and anticipated regret, in predicting binge-drinking intentions and behaviour. Methods: A total of178 undergraduates completed a questionnaire containing measures of TPB variables, descriptive norms, anticipated regret, and previous binge-drinking behaviour. One week later, 104 students completed a measure of binge-drinking behaviour. Results: Hierarchical regression demonstrated that attitudes (beta = 0.30, P < 0.001) and anticipated regret (beta = 0.47, P < 0.001) were significant predictors of intentions, with the final equation accounting for 58% of the variance. Hierarchial regression found that intentions (beta = -0.21, P < 0.05) and previous binge-drinking behaviour (beta = 0.36, P < 0.01) predicted current drinking behaviour, accounting for 33% of the variance. Conclusions: The study suggests that modifying attitudes and inducing regret may be effective strategies for reducing binge-drinking intentions among undergraduates, which should reduce subsequent binge-drinking behaviour. © The Author 2006. The relation between the fragility of glass-forming systems, a parameter which describes many of their key physical characteristics, and atomic scale structure is investigated by using neutron diffraction to measure the topological and chemical ordering for germania, or GeO2, which is an archetypal strong glass former. We find that the ordering for this and other tetrahedral network-forming glasses at distances greater than the nearest neighbor can be rationalized in terms of an interplay between the relative importance of two length scales. One of these is associated with an intermediate range, the other with an extended range and, with increasing glass fragility, it is the extended range ordering which dominates.

Focal points: A 5 per cent cross-sectional sample of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's membership was targeted with a self-completion questionnaire Community pharmacy respondents were asked questions on their views on current pharmacy opening hours and their willingness to work extended opening hours Around one fifth of the community pharmacists sampled believed that patients should have access to at least one community pharmacy 24 hours a day Only 3.4 per cent of community pharmacists sampled were prepared to work at any time over a 24-hour period With the introduction of more 24-hour health care services (eg, NHS Direct), there may need to be a change in the attitudes of community pharmacists towards working extended opening hours

Atomic ordering in network glasses on length scales longer than nearest-neighbour length scales has long been a source of controversy(1-6). Detailed experimental information is therefore necessary to understand both the network properties and the fundamentals of glass formation. Here we address the problem by investigating topological and chemical ordering in structurally disordered AX2 systems by applying the method of isotopic substitution in neutron diffraction to glassy ZnCl2. This system may be regarded as a prototypical ionic network forming glass, provided that ion polarization effects are taken into account(7), and has thus been the focus of much attention(8-14). By experiment, we show that both the topological and chemical ordering are described by two length scales at distances greater than nearest-neighbour length scales. One of these is associated with the intermediate range, as manifested by the appearance in the measured diffraction patterns of a first sharp diffraction peak at 1.09( 3) angstrom(-1); the other is associated with an extended range, which shows ordering in the glass out to 62( 4) angstrom. We also find that these general features are characteristic of glassy GeSe2, a prototypical covalently bonded network material(15,16). The results therefore offer structural insight into those length scales that determine many important aspects of supercooled liquid and glass phenomenology(11).

This paper presents an extended behavior of networks of evolutionary processors. Usually, such nets are able to solve NP-complete problems working with symbolic information. Information can evolve applying rules and can be communicated though the net provided some constraints are verified. These nets are based on biological behavior of membrane systems, but transformed into a suitable computational model. Only symbolic information is communicated. This paper proposes to communicate evolution rules as well as symbolic information. This idea arises from the DNA structure in living cells, such DNA codes information and operations and it can be sent to other cells. Extended nets could be considered as a superset of networks of evolutionary processors since permitting and forbidden constraints can be written in order to deny rules communication.
