A comprehensive study has been conducted to compare the adsorptions of alkali metals (including Li, Na, and K) on the basal plane of graphite by using molecular orbital theory calculations. All three metal atoms prefer to be adsorbed on the middle hollow site above a hexagonal aromatic ring. A novel phenomenon was observed, that is, Na, instead of Li or K, is the weakest among the three types of metal atoms in adsorption. The reason is that the SOMO (single occupied molecular orbital) of the Na atom is exactly at the middle point between the HOMO and the LUMO of the graphite layer in energy level. As a result, the SOMO of Na cannot form a stable interaction with either the HOMO or the LUMO of the graphite. On the other hand, the SOMO of Li and K can form a relatively stable interaction with either the HOMO or the LUMO of graphite. Why Li has a relatively stronger adsorption than K on graphite has also been interpreted on the basis of their molecular-orbital energy levels.

In this work, nanoporous nickel oxide was synthesized using anionic surfactant assembly method. Structure characterizations show that this nickel oxide possesses partly-ordered mesoporous structure with nanocrystalline pore wall. The formation mechanism of wormlike nanoporous structure is ascribed to the quasi-reverse micelle system formed by ternary phases of SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate)/urea/water. Cyclic voltammetry shows that these nickel oxide samples possess both good capacitive behavior due to its unique nanoporous structure and very high specific capacitance due to its high surface area with electrochemical activity.

In this paper we apply a new method for the determination of surface area of carbonaceous materials, using the local surface excess isotherms obtained from the Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulation and a concept of area distribution in terms of energy well-depth of solid–fluid interaction. The range of this well-depth considered in our GCMC simulation is from 10 to 100 K, which is wide enough to cover all carbon surfaces that we dealt with (for comparison, the well-depth for perfect graphite surface is about 58 K). Having the set of local surface excess isotherms and the differential area distribution, the overall adsorption isotherm can be obtained in an integral form. Thus, given the experimental data of nitrogen or argon adsorption on a carbon material, the differential area distribution can be obtained from the inversion process, using the regularization method. The total surface area is then obtained as the area of this distribution. We test this approach with a number of data in the literature, and compare our GCMC-surface area with that obtained from the classical BET method. In general, we find that the difference between these two surface areas is about 10%, indicating the need to reliably determine the surface area with a very consistent method. We, therefore, suggest the approach of this paper as an alternative to the BET method because of the long-recognized unrealistic assumptions used in the BET theory. Beside the surface area obtained by this method, it also provides information about the differential area distribution versus the well-depth. This information could be used as a microscopic finger-print of the carbon surface. It is expected that samples prepared from different precursors and different activation conditions will have distinct finger-prints. We illustrate this with Cabot BP120, 280 and 460 samples, and the differential area distributions obtained from the adsorption of argon at 77 K and nitrogen also at 77 K have exactly the same patterns, suggesting the characteristics of this carbon.

Dizziness and or unsteadiness, associated with episodes of loss of balance, are frequent complaints in those suffering from persistent problems following a whiplash injury. Research has been inconclusive with respect to possible aetiology, discriminative tests and analyses used. The aim of this pilot research was to identify the test conditions and the most appropriate method for the analysis of sway that may differentiate subjects with persistent whiplash associated disorders (WAD) from healthy controls. The six conditions of the Clinical Test for Sensory Interaction in Balance was performed in both comfortable and tandem stance in 20 subjects with persistent WAD compared to 20 control subjects. The analyses were carried out using a traditional method of measurement, total sway distance, to results obtained from the use of wavelet analysis. Subjects with WAD were significantly less able to complete the tandem stance tests on a firm surface than controls. In comfortable stance, using wavelet analysis, significant differences between subjects with WAD and the control group were evident in total energy of the trace for all test conditions apart from eyes open on the firm surface. In contrast, the results of the analysis using total sway distance revealed no significant differences between groups across all six conditions. Wavelet analysis may be more appropriate for detecting disturbances in balance in whiplash subjects because the technique allows separation of the noise from the underlying systematic effect of sway. These findings will be used to direct future studies on the aeitiology of balance disturbances in WAD. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The diagrammatic strong-coupling perturbation theory (SCPT) for correlated electron systems is developed for intersite Coulomb interaction and for a nonorthogonal basis set. The construction is based on iterations of exact closed equations for many - electron Green functions (GFs) for Hubbard operators in terms of functional derivatives with respect to external sources. The graphs, which do not contain the contributions from the fluctuations of the local population numbers of the ion states, play a special role: a one-to-one correspondence is found between the subset of such graphs for the many - electron GFs and the complete set of Feynman graphs of weak-coupling perturbation theory (WCPT) for single-electron GFs. This fact is used for formulation of the approximation of renormalized Fermions (ARF) in which the many-electron quasi-particles behave analogously to normal Fermions. Then, by analyzing: (a) Sham's equation, which connects the self-energy and the exchange- correlation potential in density functional theory (DFT); and (b) the Galitskii and Migdal expressions for the total energy, written within WCPT and within ARF SCPT, a way we suggest a method to improve the description of the systems with correlated electrons within the local density approximation (LDA) to DFT. The formulation, in terms of renormalized Fermions LIDA (RF LDA), is obtained by introducing the spectral weights of the many electron GFs into the definitions of the charge density, the overlap matrices, effective mixing and hopping matrix elements, into existing electronic structure codes, whereas the weights themselves have to be found from an additional set of equations. Compared with LDA+U and self-interaction correction (SIC) methods, RF LDA has the advantage of taking into account the transfer of spectral weights, and, when formulated in terms of GFs, also allows for consideration of excitations and nonzero temperature. Going beyond the ARF SCPT, as well as RF LIDA, and taking into account the fluctuations of ion population numbers would require writing completely new codes for ab initio calculations. The application of RF LDA for ab initio band structure calculations for rare earth metals is presented in part 11 of this study (this issue). (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The aims of this study were to establish the nutritional status of children pre- BMT and to determine whether predictive methods of assessing nutritional status and resting energy expenditure ( REE) are accurate in this population. We analysed the body cell mass ( BCM) ( n = 26) and REE ( n = 24) in children undergoing BMT. BCM was adjusted for height ( BCM/ HTp) and expressed as a Z score to represent nutritional status. To determine whether body mass index ( BMI) was indicative of nutritional status in children undergoing BMT, BMI Z scores were compared to the reference method of BCM/ HTp Z scores. Schofield predictive equations of basal metabolic rate ( BMR) were compared to measured REE to evaluate the accuracy of the predictive equations. The mean BCM/ HTp Z score for the subject population was -1.09 +/- 1.28. There was no significant relationship between BCM/ HTp Z score and BMI Z score ( r = 0.34; P > 0.05); however there was minimal difference between measured REE and predicted BMR ( bias = -11 +/- 149 kcal/ day). The results of this study demonstrate that children undergoing BMT may have suboptimal nutritional status and that BMI is not an accurate indication of nutritional status in this population. However, Schofield equations were found to be suitable for representing REE in children pre- BMT.

This paper proposes a transmission and wheeling pricing method based on the monetary flow tracing along power flow paths: the monetary flow-monetary path method. Active and reactive power flows are converted into monetary flows by using nodal prices. The method introduces a uniform measurement for transmission service usages by active and reactive powers. Because monetary flows are related to the nodal prices, the impacts of generators and loads on operation constraints and the interactive impacts between active and reactive powers can be considered. Total transmission service cost is separated into more practical line-related costs and system-wide cost, and can be flexibly distributed between generators and loads. The method is able to reconcile transmission service cost fairly and to optimize transmission system operation and development. The case study on the IEEE 30 bus test system shows that the proposed pricing method is effective in creating economic signals towards the efficient use and operation of the transmission system. Melnikov's method is used to analytically predict the onset of chaotic instability in a rotating body with internal energy dissipation. The model has been found to exhibit chaotic instability when a harmonic disturbance torque is applied to the system for a range of forcing amplitude and frequency. Such a model may be considered to be representative of the dynamical behavior of a number of physical systems such as a spinning spacecraft. In spacecraft, disturbance torques may arise under malfunction of the control system, from an unbalanced rotor, from vibrations in appendages or from orbital variations. Chaotic instabilities arising from such disturbances could introduce uncertainties and irregularities into the motion of the multibody system and consequently could have disastrous effects on its intended operation. A comprehensive stability analysis is performed and regions of nonlinear behavior are identified. Subsequently, the closed form analytical solution for the unperturbed system is obtained in order to identify homoclinic orbits. Melnikov's method is then applied on the system once transformed into Hamiltonian form. The resulting analytical criterion for the onset of chaotic instability is obtained in terms of critical system parameters. The sufficient criterion is shown to be a useful predictor of the phenomenon via comparisons with numerical results. Finally, for the purposes of providing a complete, self-contained investigation of this fundamental system, the control of chaotic instability is demonstated using Lyapunov's method.

Adsorption of supercritical fluids is increasingly carried out to determine the micropore size distribution. This is largely motivated by the advances in the use of supercritical adsorption in high energy applications, such as hydrogen and methane storage in porous media. Experimental data are reported as mass excess versus pressure, and when these data are matched against the theoretical mass excess, significant errors could occur if the void volume used in the calculation of the experimental mass excess is incorrectly determined [Malbrunot, P.; Vidal, D.; Vermesse, J.; Chahine, R.; Bose, T. K. Langmuir 1997, 13, 539]. 1 The incorrect value for the void volume leads to a wrong description of the maximum in the plot of mass excess versus pressure as well as the part of the isotherm over the pressure region where the isotherm is decreasing. Because of this uncertainty in the maximum and the decreasing part of the isotherm, we propose a new method in which the problems associated with this are completely avoided. Our method involves only the relationship between the amount that is introduced into the adsorption cell and the equilibrium pressure. This information of direct experimental data has two distinct advantages. The first is that the data is the raw data without any manipulation (i.e., involving further calculations), and the second one is that this relationship always monotonically increases with pressure. We will illustrate this new method with the adsorption data of methane in a commercial sample of activated carbon.

A Monte Carlo simulation method is Used 10 study the effects of adsorption strength and topology of sites on adsorption of simple Lennard-Jones fluids in a carbon slit pore of finite length. Argon is used as a model adsorbate, while the adsorbent is modeled as a finite carbon slit pore whose two walls composed of three graphene layers with carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal pattern. Impurities having well depth of interaction greater than that of carbon atom are assumed to be grafted onto the surface. Different topologies of the impurities; corner, centre, shelf and random topologies are studied. Adsorption isotherms of argon at 87.3 K are obtained for pore having widths of 1, 1.5 and 3 11111 using a Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulation (GCMC). These results are compared with isotherms obtained for infinite pores. It is shown that the Surface heterogeneity affects significantly the overall adsorption isotherm, particularly the phase transition. Basically it shifts the onset of adsorption to lower pressure and the adsorption isotherms for these four impurity models are generally greater than that for finite pore. The positions of impurities on solid Surface also affect the shape of the adsorption isotherm and the phase transition. We have found that the impurities allocated at the centre of pore walls provide the greatest isotherm at low pressures. However when the pressure increases the impurities allocated along the edges of the graphene layers show the most significant effect on the adsorption isotherm. We have investigated the effect of surface heterogeneity on adsorption hysteresis loops of three models of impurity topology, it shows that the adsorption branches of these isotherms are different, while the desorption branches are quite close to each other. This suggests that the desorption branch is either the thermodynamic equilibrium branch or closer to it than the adsorption branch. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The inhibitory effects of nitrite (NO2-)/free nitrous acid (HNO2-FNA) on the metabolism of Nitrobacter were investigated using a method allowing the decoupling of the growth and energy generation processes. A lab-scale sequencing batch reactor was operated for the enrichment of a Nitrobacter culture. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis showed that 73% of the bacterial population was Nitrobacter. Batch tests were carried out to assess the oxygen and nitrite consumption rates of the enriched culture at low and high nitrite levels, in the presence or absence of inorganic carbon. It was observed that in the absence of CO2, the Nitrobacter culture was able to oxidize nitrite at a rate that is 76% of that in the presence of CO2, with an oxygen consumption rate that is 85% of that measured in the presence of CO2. This enabled the impacts of nitrite/FNA on the catabolic and anabolic processes of Nitrobacter to be assessed separately. FNA rather than nitrite was likely the actual inhibitor to the Nitrobacter metabolism. It was revealed that FNA of up to 0.05 mg HNO2-N center dot L-1 (3.4 mu M), which was the highest FNA concentration used in this study, did not have any inhibitory effect on the catabolic processes of Nitrobacter. However, FNA initiated its inhibition to the anabolic processes of Nitrobacter at approximately 0.011 mg HNO2-N center dot L-1 (0.8 mu M), and completely stopped biomass synthesis at a concentration of approximately 0.023 mg HNO2-N center dot L-1 (1.6 mu M). The inhibitory effect could be described by an empirical inhibitory model proposed in this paper, but the underlying mechanisms remain to be revealed.

A novel method that relies on the decoupling of the energy production and biosynthesis processes was used to characterise the maintenance, cell lysis and growth processes of Nitrosomonas sp. A Nitrosolnonas culture was enriched in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with ammonium as the sole energy source. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) showed that Nitrosomonas bound to the NEU probe constituted 82% of the bacterial population, while no other known ammonium or nitrite oxidizing bacteria were detected. Batch tests were carried out under conditions that both ammonium and CO, were in excess, and in the absence of one of these two substrates. The oxygen uptake rate and nitrite production rate were measured during these batch tests. The results obtained from these batch tests, along with the SBR performance data, allowed the determination of the maintenance coefficient and the in situ cell lysis rate, as well as the maximum specific growth rate of the Nitrosomonas culture. It is shown that, during normal growth, the Nitrosomonas culture spends approximately 65% of the energy generated for maintenance. The maintenance coefficient was determined to be 0.14 - 0.16 mgN mgCOD(biomass)(-1) h(-1), and was shown to be independent of the specific growth rate. The in situ lysis rate and the maximum specific growth rate of the Nitrosomonas culture were determined to be 0.26 and 1.0 day(-1) (0.043 h(-1)), respectively, under aerobic conditions at 30 degrees C and pH7. In a deregulated electricity market, optimizing dispatch capacity and transmission capacity are among the core concerns of market operators. Many market operators have capitalized on linear programming (LP) based methods to perform market dispatch operation in order to explore the computational efficiency of LP. In this paper, the search capability of genetic algorithms (GAs) is utilized to solve the market dispatch problem. The GA model is able to solve pool based capacity dispatch, while optimizing the interconnector transmission capacity. Case studies and corresponding analyses are performed to demonstrate the efficiency of the GA model.

This thesis is a study of three techniques to improve performance of some standard fore-casting models, application to the energy demand and prices. We focus on forecasting demand and price one-day ahead. First, the wavelet transform was used as a pre-processing procedure with two approaches: multicomponent-forecasts and direct-forecasts. We have empirically compared these approaches and found that the former consistently outperformed the latter. Second, adaptive models were introduced to continuously update model parameters in the testing period by combining ?lters with standard forecasting methods. Among these adaptive models, the adaptive LR-GARCH model was proposed for the fi?rst time in the thesis. Third, with regard to noise distributions of the dependent variables in the forecasting models, we used either Gaussian or Student-t distributions. This thesis proposed a novel algorithm to infer parameters of Student-t noise models. The method is an extension of earlier work for models that are linear in parameters to the non-linear multilayer perceptron. Therefore, the proposed method broadens the range of models that can use a Student-t noise distribution. Because these techniques cannot stand alone, they must be combined with prediction models to improve their performance. We combined these techniques with some standard forecasting models: multilayer perceptron, radial basis functions, linear regression, and linear regression with GARCH. These techniques and forecasting models were applied to two datasets from the UK energy markets: daily electricity demand (which is stationary) and gas forward prices (non-stationary). The results showed that these techniques provided good improvement to prediction performance.
