Wear resistant coatings were produced on a permanent mould cast MRI 230D Mg alloy by (a) PEO in silicate based electrolyte, (b) PEO in phosphate based electrolyte, (c) hybrid coatings of silicate PEO followed by laser surface alloying (LSA) with Al and Al(2)O(3), and (d) hybrid coatings of phosphate PEO followed by LSA with Al and Al(2)O(3). Microstructural characterization of the coatings was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X(ray diffraction. The tribological behavior of the coatings was investigated under dry sliding condition using linearly reciprocating ball-on-flat wear test. Both the PEO coatings exhibited a friction coefficient of about 0.8 and hybrid coatings exhibited a value of about 0.5 against the AISI 52100 steel ball as the friction partner, which were slightly reduced with the increase in applied load. The PEO coatings sustained the test without failure at 2 N load but failed at 5 N load due to micro-fracture caused by high contact stresses. The hybrid coatings did not get completely worn off at 2 N load but were completely removed exposing the substrate at 5 N load. The PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the hybrid coatings and silicate PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the phosphate PEO coatings. Both the PEO coatings melted/decomposed on laser irradiation and all the hybrid coatings exhibited similar microstructure and wear behavior irrespective of the nature of the primary PEO coating or laser energies. SEM examination of worn surfaces indicated abrasive wear combined with adhesive wear for all the specimens. The surface of the ball exhibited a discontinuous transfer layer after the wear test. An attempt has been made to describe the glass forming ability (GFA) of liquid alloys, using the concepts of the short range order (SRO) and middle range order (MRO) characterizing the liquid structure.A new approach to obtain good GFA of liquid alloys is based on the following four main factors: (1) formation of new SRO and competitive correlation with two or more kinds of SROs for crystallization, (2) stabilization of dense random packing by interaction between different types of SRO, (3) formation of stable cluster (SC) or middle range order (MRO) by harmonious coupling of SROs, and (4) difference between SRO characterizing the liquid structure and the near-neighbor environment in the corresponding equilibrium crystalline phases. The atomic volume mismatch estimated from the cube of the atomic radius was found to be a close relation with the minimum solute concentration for glass formation. This empirical guideline enables us to provide the optimum solute concentration for good GFA in some ternary alloys. Model structures, denoted by Bernal type and the Chemical Order type, were again tested in the novel description for the glass structure as a function of solute concentration. We illustrated the related energetics of the completion between crystal embryo and different types of SRO. Recent systematic measurements also provide that thermal diffusivity of alloys in the liquid state may be a good indicator of their GFA.

Digital human modeling (DHM) involves modeling of structure, form and functional capabilities of human users for ergonomics simulation. This paper presents application of geometric procedures for investigating the characteristics of human visual capabilities which are particularly important in the context mentioned above. Using the cone of unrestricted directions through the pupil on a tessellated head model as the geometric interpretation of the clinical field-of-view (FoV), the results obtained are experimentally validated. Estimating the pupil movement for a given gaze direction using Listing's Law, FoVs are re-computed. Significant variation of the FoV is observed with the variation in gaze direction. A novel cube-grid representation, which integrated the unit-cube representation of directions and the enhanced slice representation has been introduced for fast and exact point classification for point visibility analysis for a given FoV. Computation of containment frequency of every grid-cell for a given set of FoVs enabled determination of percentile-based FoV contours for estimating the visual performance of a given population. This is a new concept which makes visibility analysis more meaningful from ergonomics point-of-view. The algorithms are fast enough to support interactive analysis of reasonably complex scenes on a typical desktop computer. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Commercial purity (99.8%) magnesium single crystals were subjected to plane strain compression (PSC) along the c-axis at 200 and 370 degrees C and a constant strain rate of 10(-3) s(-1). Extension was confined to the < 1 1 (2) over bar 0 > direction and the specimens were strained up to a logarithmic true strain of -1. The initial rapid increase in flow stress was followed by significant work softening at different stresses and comparable strains of about -0.05 related to macroscopic twinning events. The microstructure of the specimen after PSC at 200 degrees C was characterized by a high density of {1 0 (1) over bar 1} and {1 0 (1) over bar 3} compression twins, some of which were recrystallized. After PSC at 370 degrees C, completely recrystallized twin bands were the major feature of the observed microstructure. All new grains in these bands retained the same c-axis orientation of their compression twin hosts. The basal plane in these grains was randomly rotated around the c-axis, forming a fiber texture component. The obtained results are discussed with respect to the mechanism of recrystallization, the specific character of the boundaries between new grains and the initial matrix, and the importance of the dynamically recrystallized bands for strain accommodation in these deformed magnesium single crystals. Fruit flies that belong to the genus Bactrocera (Diptera: Tephritidae) are major invasive pests of agricultural crops in Asia and Australia. Increased transboundary movement of agricultural produce has resulted in the chance introduction of many invasive species that include Bactrocera mainly as immature stages. Therefore quick and accurate species diagnosis is important at the port of entry, where morphological identification has a limited role, as it requires the presence of adult specimens and the availability of a specialist. Unfortunately when only immature stages are present, a lacunae in their taxonomy impedes accurate species diagnosis. At this juncture, molecular species diagnostics based on COX-I have become handy, because diagnosis is not limited by developmental stages. Yet another method of quick and accurate species diagnosis for Bactrocera spp. is based on the development of species-specific markers. This study evaluated the utility of COX-I for the quick and accurate species diagnosis of eggs, larvae, pupae and adults of B. zonata Saunders, B. tau Walker, and B. dorsalis Hendel. Furthermore the utility of species-specific markers in differentiating B. zonata (500bp) and B. tau (220bp) was shown. Phylogenetic relationships among five subgenera, viz., Austrodacus, Bactrocera, Daculus, Notodacus and Zeugodacus have been resolved employing the 5' region of COX-I (1490-2198); where COX-I sequences for B. dorsalis Hendel, B. tau Walker, B. correcta Bezzi and B. zonata Saunders from India were compared with other NCBI-GenBank accessions. Phylogenetic analysis employing Maximum Parsimony (MP) and Bayesian phylogenetic approach (BP) showed that the subgenus Bactrocera is monophyletic.

Theoretical and computational investigations of nucleation have been plagued by the sensitivity of the phase diagram to the range of the interaction potential. As the surface tension depends strongly on the range of interaction potential and as the classical nucleation theory (CNT) predicts the free energy barrier to be directly proportional to the cube of the surface tension, one expects a strong sensitivity of nucleation barrier to the range of the potential; however, CNT leaves many aspects unexplored. We find for gas-liquid nucleation in Lennard-Jones system that on increasing the range of interaction the kinetic spinodal (KS) (where the mechanism of nucleation changes from activated to barrierless) shifts deeper into the metastable region. Therefore the system remains metastable for larger value of supersaturation and this allows one to explore the high metastable region without encountering the KS. On increasing the range of interaction, both the critical cluster size and pre-critical minima in the free energy surface of kth largest cluster, at respective kinetic spinodals, shift towards smaller cluster size. In order to separate surface tension contribution to the increase in the barrier from other non-trivial factors, we introduce a new scaling form for surface tension and use it to capture both the temperature and the interaction range dependence of surface tension. Surprisingly, we find only a weak non-trivial contribution from other factors to the free energy barrier of nucleation. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.3685835]

Pyrochlore phase free [Pb0.94Sr0.06] [(Mn1/3Sb2/3)(0.05)(Zr0.53Ti0.47)(0.95)] O-3 ceramics has been synthesized with pure Perovskite phase by semi-wet route using the columbite precursor method. The field dependences of the dielectric response and the conductivity have been measured in a frequency range from 50 Hz to 1 MHz and in a temperature range from 303 K to 773 K. An analysis of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric permittivity with frequency has been performed, assuming a distribution of relaxation times. The scaling behavior of the dielectric loss spectra suggests that the distribution of the relaxation times is temperature independent. The SEM photographs of the sintered specimens present the homogenous structures and well-grown grains with a sharp grain boundary. The material exhibits tetragonal structure. When measured at frequency (100 Hz), the polarization shows a strong field dependence. Different piezoelectric figures of merit (k(p), d(33) and Q(m)) of the material have also been measured obtaining their values as 0.53, 271 pC/N and 1115, respectively, which are even higher than those of pure PZT with morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition. Thus the present ceramics have the optimal overall performance and are promising candidates for the various high power piezoelectric applications. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nanoindentation is used to explore the variation of mechanical properties associated with the dehydration process in sodium saccharin dihydrate. Upon indenting using a Berkovich tip, (011) and (101) faces exhibit explicit mechanical anisotropy that is consistent with the underlying crystal structure and intermolecular interactions. For freshly grown crystals, (011) is stiffer than (101) by 14%, while (101) is harder than (011) by 8%. Being a heavily hydrated system, the measured mechanical responses contain information pertinent to the fluidity associated with lattice water. Indentation on (011) with a sharp cube-corner tip induces a fluid flow; this observation is uncommon in molecular crystals. The crystals effloresce over a period of time with the generation of a more compact crystal structure and consequently increasing H and E.

This article presents a review of recent developments in parametric based acoustic emission (AE) techniques applied to concrete structures. It recapitulates the significant milestones achieved by previous researchers including various methods and models developed in AE testing of concrete structures. The aim is to provide an overview of the specific features of parametric based AE techniques of concrete structures carried out over the years. Emphasis is given to traditional parameter-based AE techniques applied to concrete structures. A significant amount of research on AE techniques applied to concrete structures has already been published and considerable attention has been given to those publications. Some recent studies such as AE energy analysis and b-value analysis used to assess damage of concrete bridge beams have also been discussed. The formation of fracture process zone and the AE energy released during the fracture process in concrete beam specimens have been summarised. A large body of experimental data on AE characteristics of concrete has accumulated over the last three decades. This review of parametric based AE techniques applied to concrete structures may be helpful to the concerned researchers and engineers to better understand the failure mechanism of concrete and evolve more useful methods and approaches for diagnostic inspection of structural elements and failure prediction/prevention of concrete structures.

Given two independent Poisson point processes Phi((1)), Phi((2)) in R-d, the AB Poisson Boolean model is the graph with the points of Phi((1)) as vertices and with edges between any pair of points for which the intersection of balls of radius 2r centered at these points contains at least one point of Phi((2)). This is a generalization of the AB percolation model on discrete lattices. We show the existence of percolation for all d >= 2 and derive bounds fora critical intensity. We also provide a characterization for this critical intensity when d = 2. To study the connectivity problem, we consider independent Poisson point processes of intensities n and tau n in the unit cube. The AB random geometric graph is defined as above but with balls of radius r. We derive a weak law result for the largest nearest-neighbor distance and almost-sure asymptotic bounds for the connectivity threshold.

The fatigue de-bond growth studies have been conducted on adhesively bonded lap joint specimens between aluminium and aluminium with Redux-319A adhesive with a pre-defined crack of 3 mm at the bond end. The correlations between fracture parameters and the de-bond growth data are established using both numerical and experimental techniques. In the numerical method, geometrically non-linear finite element analyses were carried out on adhesively bonded joint specimen for various de-bond lengths measured from the lap end along the mid-bond line of the adhesive. The finite element results were post processed to estimate the SERR components G (I) and G (II) using the Modified Virtual Crack Closure Integral (MVCCI) procedure. In experimental work, specimens were fabricated and fatigue de-bond growth tests were conducted at a stress ratio R = -1. The results obtained from both numerical analyses and testing have been used to generate de-bond growth curve and establish de-bond growth law in the Paris regime for such joints. The de-bond growth rate is primarily function of mode-I SERR component G (I) since the rate of growth in shear mode is relatively small. The value of Paris exponent m is found to be 6.55. The high value of de-bond growth exponent in Paris regime is expected, since the adhesive is less ductile than conventional metallic materials. This study is important for estimating the life of adhesively bonded joints under both constant and variable amplitude fatigue loads.

This article presents the deformation behavior of high-strength pearlitic steel deformed by triaxial compression to achieve ultra-fine ferrite grain size with fragmented cementite. The consequent evolution of microstructure and texture has been studied using scanning electron microscopy, electron back-scatter diffraction, and X-ray diffraction. The synergistic effect of diffusion and deformation leads to the uniform dissolution of cementite at higher temperature. At lower temperature, significant grain refinement of ferrite phase occurs by deformation and exhibits a characteristic deformation texture. In contrast, the high-temperature deformed sample shows a weaker texture with cube component for the ferrite phase, indicating the occurrence of recrystallization. The different mechanisms responsible for the refinement of ferrite as well as the fragmentation of cementite and their interaction with each other have been analyzed. Viscoplastic self-consistent simulation was employed to understand deformation texture in the ferrite phase during triaxial compression.

Chips produced by turning a commercial purity magnesium billet were cold compacted and then hot extruded at four different temperatures: 250, 300, 350, and 400 degrees C. Cast billets, of identical composition, were also extruded as reference material. Chip boundaries, visible even after 49: 1 extrusion at 400 degrees C, were observed to suppress grain coarsening. Although 250 degrees C extruded chip-consolidated product showed early onset of yielding and lower ductility, fully dense material (extruded at 400 degrees C) had nearly 40% reduction in grain size with 22% higher yield strength and comparable ductility as that of the reference. The study highlights the role of densification and grain refinement on the compression behavior of chip consolidated specimens.

Room temperature nanoindentation experiments, employing two different pyramidal (Berkovich and cube-corner) indenters, were performed on a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) to critically examine the possibility of indentation-induced nanocrystallization in BMGs. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy images obtained from high angle annular dark field ( HAADF) and high resolution (HR) modes clearly indicate to the occurrence of nanocrystallization. Pronounced nanocrystallite formation in the case of sharper cube-corner indenter suggests that the structural transformation is favored by the high strains introduced during nanoindentation. A herbarium-based database (virtual herbarium) is a referral system for plants that maximizes the usefulness of the collections. The information content of such a database is essentially built on the voucher specimens that the herbarium has in its care. The present article reports on the construction of a `virtual herbarium' for the state-wide collection of flowering plants in the Herbarium JCB housed at the Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, that is expected to be launched soon. The taxonomic data on each species include all information presented on the herbarium specimen label, namely species name, author citation, sub-species if any, variety if any, family, subfamily, collection number, locations, date of collection, habitat and the collector's name. The data further comprise `flora' in which the species are described. Additional information includes the nomenclature update according to `The Plant List', a detailed description, phenology, species distribution, threat status and comments on any special features of the taxon. The live images of the species provided in the database form an information synergy on the species. This initiative is the first of its kind for herbaria in peninsular India.
