A literatura topofílica e telúrica (2008).

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare by means of McNamara as well as Legan and Burstone's cephalometric analyses, both manual and digitized (by Dentofacial Planner Plus and Dolphin Image software) prediction tracings to post-surgical results. METHODS: Pre and post-surgical teleradiographs (6 months) of 25 long face patients subjected to combined orthognathic surgery were selected. Manual and computerized prediction tracings of each patient were performed and cephalometrically compared to post-surgical outcomes. This protocol was repeated in order to evaluate the method error and statistical evaluation was conducted by means of analysis of variance and Tukey's test. RESULTS: A higher frequency of cephalometric variables, which were not statistically different from the actual post-surgical results for the manual method, was observed. It was followed by DFPlus and Dolphin software; in which similar cephalometric values for most variables were observed. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the manual method seemed more reliable, although the predictability of the evaluated methods (computerized and manual) proved to be reasonably satisfactory and similar.

This research presents the results of a cephalometric radiography study, in frontal norm, that was used to measure the possible linear correlations between several linear dimensions of the face, in a sample of a 140 caucasian brazilians, with an average age of 20 years, who were distributed in 2 groups as follows: Control group - formed of 35 males and 35 females, with no apparent facial deformities and with dental oclusion, not necessarily, in Angle's Class I; Unilateral cleft lip and palate group - formed of 35 males and 35 females with surgical correction of the up in the first year and of the palate until the third year of life, without orthodontic treatment. ln each teleradiography, the following parameters were measured using a computer: - Lateral orbit width or external orbit width (LOe) - Medial orbit width or internal orbit width (LOI) - Zygomatic width or facial width (LZI) - Mastold width (LMa) - Maxilar width (LMx) - Nasal width (LNa) - Condilar width (LCo) - Antigonial width (LGa) The values obtained were treated statistically using quantitative analysis (arithmetic mean, standard deviation, standard mean error, Person's variation factor and Pearson factor linear correlation). Theirs significance was established by Student's t test. The Pearson factor linear correlations determined between transverse linear cephalometric width dimensions of face in frontal norm for individuals of both groups and sex, with an average age of 20 years, were: ...

Aim: to evaluate the association of the long face pattern and the mouth breathing, correlating them with the intraoral characteristics. Methods: the sample was composed of 60 Caucasian Brazilian descendents patients, divided in two groups according to the subjective of their facial pattern. The patients were clinically evaluated to determine their respiratory pattern and the diagnosed of malocclusion. The lateral teleradiographies were drawn in standard to verification facial cephalometric pattern. Chi-Square analysis evaluated the association between subjective facial pattern and type of breathing; facial pattern subjective and cephalometric facial pattern. It was also the chi-square with yates correction to evaluate the associations between subjective facial pattern, type of breathing and posterior cross bite; facial subjective standard, type of breathing and anterior open bite; facial pattern between subjective, type breathing and type of Angle´s malocclusion. Results: it showed that long face pattern (group 1) was associated with mouth breathing habit and facial cephalometric standard. Moreover, the long-face pattern (group 1) presented that mouth breathing was associated with a posterior crossbite and Angle Class II malocclusion. Conclusion: the long face pattern - evaluated with subjective facial analyses - was associated with mouth breathing. The long face pattern and patients with mouth breathing was associated with a posterior crossbite and Class II Angle's malocclusion.

Individuals with facial paralysis of 6 months or more without evidence of clinical or electromyographic improvement have been successfully reanimated utilizing an orthodromic temporalis transfer in conjunction with end-to-side cross-face nerve grafts. The temporalis muscle insertion is released from the coronoid process of the mandible and sutured to a fascia lata graft that is secured distally to the commissure and paralyzed hemilip. The orthodromic transfer of the temporalis muscle overcomes the concave temporal deformity and zygomatic fullness produced by the turning down of the central third of the muscle (Gillies procedure) while yielding stronger muscle contraction and a more symmetric smile. The muscle flap is combined with cross-face sural nerve grafts utilizing end-to-side neurorrhaphies to import myelinated motor fibers to the paralyzed muscles of facial expression in the midface and perioral region. Cross-face nerve grafting provides the potential for true spontaneous facial motion. We feel that the synergy created by the combination of techniques can perhaps produce a more symmetrical and synchronized smile than either procedure in isolation.Nineteen patients underwent an orthodromic temporalis muscle flap in conjunction with cross-face (buccal-buccal with end-to-side neurorrhaphy) nerve grafts. To evaluate the symmetry of the smile, we measured the length of the two hemilips (normal and affected) using the CorelDRAW X3 software. Measurements were obtained in the pre- and postoperative period and compared for symmetry. There was significant improvement in smile symmetry in 89.5 % of patients.Orthodromic temporalis muscle transfer in conjunction with cross face nerve grafts creates a synergistic effect frequently producing an aesthetic, symmetric smile. This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. This article proposes to show the contributions of the sex education in the school as a way to mitigate the effects of the media, which sometimes leads to early sexualisation of children. Bibliographical in nature, it points out some aspects of sexuality in childhood, and reveals the issues brought by the media, particularly for the formation of the child, when addressing sexual issues, highlighting the role of sex education for a more reflective thinking about this theme.

The purpose of this research was to compare, by cephalometric analysis (McNamara and Legan & Burstone) the predictive tracings (by methods manual, and by softwares Dentofacial Planner Plus and Dolphin Image) with the post surgical results. Were selected the pre and post surgical lateral telerradiograph (six months after orthognatic surgery) of the 25 long face patients treated with combined orthognatic surgery. Were made the prediction tracings for each method and comparing cephalometrically with the post surgical results. This protocol was repeated once more for the error method evaluation, and the statistical was made by variance analysis and Tuckey overtest. The results show more frequency of the cephalometric values' aproximation of the post surgical results when the manual method (50% of the similarity with the post surgical result), followed of the DFPlus (31,2%) and Dolphin (18,8%) softwares. The experimental condition permits to conclude that the manual method had more precision, although the previsibility of the digital methods was reasonable satisfactory.
