Objectives: Physique traits and their relationship to competitive success were assessed amongst lightweight rowers competing at the 2003 Australian Rowing Championships. Methods: Full anthropometric profiles were collected from 107 lightweight rowers (n = 65 males, n = 45 females) competing in the Under 23 and Open age categories. Performance assessments were obtained for 66 of these rowers based on results in the single sculls events. The relationship between physique traits and competitive success was then determined. Results: Lower body fat ( heat time estimate -8.4 s kg(-1), p< 0.01), greater total body mass ( heat time estimate -4.4 s kg(-1), p = 0.03), and muscle mass ( heat time estimate -10.2 s kg(-1), p< 0.01) were associated with faster 2000 m heat times. Conclusions: The more successful lightweight rowers were those who had lower body fat and greater total muscle mass.

In this paper we investigate the mixture adsorption of ethylene, ethane, nitrogen and argon on graphitized thermal carbon black and in slit pores by means of the Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Pure component adsorption isotherms on graphitized thermal carbon black are first characterized with the GCMC method, and then mixture simulations are carried out over a wide range of pore width, temperature, pressure and composition to investigate the cooperative and competitive adsorption of all species in the mixture. Results of mixture simulations are compared with the experimental data of ethylene and ethane (Friederich and Mullins, 1972) on Sterling FTG-D5 (homogeneous carbon black having a BET surface area of 13 m(2)/g) at 298 K and a pressure range of 1.3-93 kPa. Because of the co-operative effect, the Henry constant determined by the traditional chromatography method is always greater than that obtained from the volumetric method.

Although Darwin was not the first to conceive directional selection as a mechanism of phenotypic change, it is his ideas that were received, and that have shaped population biology to this day. A significant change in his theoretical orientation occurred in the mid-1850s. About then he abandoned environmental selection in favor of competitive selection, and adopted relative adaptation with all its consequences as an alternative. These ideas changed his thinking fundamentally and shaped his argument throughout the writing of his great book. It is still these ideas that predominate today. Here I examine Darwin ' s ideas in relation to his principle of divergence, sexual selection, and the nature and origin of species. Finally I suggest that had he not misunderstood the function of sexual communication he might well have understood the nature of species and provided a more penetrating resolution to Herschell ' s mystery of mysteries, with which he opened his book.

The incorporation of organic matter ( OM) in soils that are able to rapidly sorb applied phosphorus ( P) fertiliser reportedly increases P availability to plants. This effect has commonly been ascribed to competition between the decomposition products of OM and P for soil sorption sites resulting in increased soil solution P concentrations. The evidence for competitive inhibition of P sorption by dissolved organic carbon compounds, derived from the breakdown of OM, includes studies on the competition between P and (i) low molecular weight organic acids (LOAs), (ii) humic and fulvic acids, and (iii) OM leachates in soils with a high P sorption capacity. These studies, however, have often used LOAs at 1 - 100 mM, concentrations much higher than those in soils ( generally < 0.05 mM). The transience of LOAs in biologically active soils further suggests that neither their concentration nor their persistence would have a practical benefit in increasing P phytoavailability. Higher molecular weight compounds such as humic and fulvic acids also competitively inhibit P sorption; however, little consideration has been given to the potential of these compounds to increase the amount of P sorbed through metal - chelate linkages. We suggest that the magnitude of the inhibition of P sorption by the decomposition products of OM leachate is negligible at rates equivalent to those of OM applied in the field. Incubation of OM in soil has also commonly been reported as reducing P sorption in soil. However, we consider that the reported decreases in P sorption ( as measured by P in the soil solution) are not related to competition from the decomposition products of OM breakdown, but are the result of P release from the OM that was not accounted for when calculating the reduction in P sorption.

The edge-to-edge matching model has been further developed along with the Cu/Cr system as an example. The conditions for zigzag atom rows to be matching directions are included and the critical value of interatomic spacing misfit along matching directions and the critical value of d-value mismatch between matching planes are proposed in the new version of the model. The edge-to-edge matching model for describing the interfacial crystallographic characteristics between two phases that are related by reproducible orientation relationships has been applied to the typical grain refiners in aluminum alloys. Excellent atomic matching between Al3Ti nucleating substrates, known to be effective nucleation sites for primary Al, and the Al matrix in both close packed directions and close packed planes containing these directions have been identified. The crystallographic features of the grain refiner and the Al matrix are very consistent with the edge-to-edge matching model. For three other typical grain refiners for Al alloys, TiC (when a = 0.4328 nm), TiB2 and AIB(2), the matching only occurs between the close packed directions in both phases and between the second close packed plane of the Al matrix and the second close packed plane of the refiners. According to the model, it is predicted that Al3Ti is a more powerful nucleating substrate for Al alloy than TiC, TiB2 and AlB2. This agrees with the previous experimental results. The present work shows that the edge-to-edge matching model has the potential to be a powerful tool in discovering new and more powerful grain refiners for Al alloys. (C) 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. Three apparently distinct and different approaches have been proposed to account for the crystallographic features of diffusion-controlled precipitation. These three models are based on (a) an invariant line in the habit plane, (b) the parallelism of a pair of Deltags that are perpendicular to the habit plane and (c) the parallelism of a pair of Moire fringes that are in turn parallel to the habit plane. The purpose of the present paper is to show that these approaches are in fact absolutely equivalent and that when certain conditions are satisfied they are essentially the same as the recent edge-to-edge matching model put forward by the authors. The edge-to-edge matching crystallographic model has been used to predict all the orientation relationships (OR) between crystals that have simple hexagonal close packed (HCP) and body-centered cubic (BCC) structures. Using the critical values for the interatomic spacing misfit along the matching directions and the cl-value mismatch between matching planes, the model predicted all the four common ORs, namely the Burgers OR, the Potter OR, the Pitsch-Schrader OR and the Rong Dunlop OR, together with the corresponding habit planes. Taking the c(H)/a(H) and a(H)/a(B) ratios as variables, where H and B denote the HCP and BCC structures respectively, the model also predicted the relationship between these variables and the four ORs. These predictions are perfectly consistent with the published experimental results. As was the case in the FCC/BCC system, the edge-to-edge matching model has been shown to be a powerful tool for predicting the crystallographic features of diffusion-controlled phase transformations. A model for the crystallography and morphology of diffusion-controlled phase transformations - edge-to-edge matching - has been used to predict the orientation relationships (OR) and habit planes of precipitates Mg17Al12 in Mg-Al alloy, Mg24Y5 in Mg-Y alloy and alpha-Mn in Mg-Mn alloy. Based on the crystal structures and lattice parameters only, the model predicts that the possible ORs between Mg17Al12 and Mg matrix are the near Burgers OR, the Potter OR, the Gjonnes-Ostmoe OR and the Crawley OR. In the Mg-Y alloy, the OR between Mg24Y5 precipitates and the Mg matrix is predicted to be the Burgers OR only. The model also predicts that there are no reproducible ORs between alpha-Mn and Mg in the Mg-Mn alloy. Combining the edge-to-edge matching model and W. Zhang's Deltag approach, the habit plane and side facets of the precipitate for each OR can be determined. All the predicted ORs and the corresponding habit planes in Mg-Al and Mg-Y alloys agree very well with the experimental results. (C) 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Different DNA motifs are required for optimal stimulation Of mouse and human immune cells by CpG oligode-oxynucleotides (ODN). These species differences presumably reflect sequence differences in TLR9, the CPG DNA receptor. In this study, we show that this sequence specificity is restricted to phosphorothioate (PS)-modified ODN and is not observed when a natural phosphodiester backbone is used. Thus, human and mouse cells have not evolved to recognize different CpG motifs in natural DNA. Nonoptimal PS-ODN (i.e., mouse CpG motif on human cells and vice versa) gave delayed and less sustained phosphorylation of p38 AWK than optimal motifs. When the CpG dinucleotide was inverted to GC In each ODN some residual activity of the PS-ODN was retained in a species-specific, TLR-9-dependent manner. Thus, TLR9 may he responsible for mediating many published CpG-independent responses to PS-ODN.

The existence of undesirable electricity price spikes in a competitive electricity market requires an efficient auction mechanism. However, many of the existing auction mechanism have difficulties in suppressing such unreasonable price spikes effectively. A new auction mechanism is proposed to suppress effectively unreasonable price spikes in a competitive electricity market. It optimally combines system marginal price auction and pay as bid auction mechanisms. A threshold value is determined to activate the switching between the marginal price auction and the proposed composite auction. Basically when the system marginal price is higher than the threshold value, the composite auction for high price electricity market is activated. The winning electricity sellers will sell their electricity at the system marginal price or their own bid prices, depending on their rights of being paid at the system marginal price and their offers' impact on suppressing undesirable price spikes. Such economic stimuli discourage sellers from practising economic and physical withholdings. Multiple price caps are proposed to regulate strong market power. We also compare other auction mechanisms to highlight the characteristics of the proposed one. Numerical simulation using the proposed auction mechanism is given to illustrate the procedure of this new auction mechanism.
