Boron-modified Pd catalysts have shown excellent performance for the selective hydrogenation of alkynes experimentally. In the current work, we investigated the hydrogenation of acetylene on boron-modified Pd(111) and Pd(211) surfaces, utilizing density functional theory calculations. The activity of acetylene hydrogenation has been studied by estimating the effective barrier of the whole process. The selectivity of ethylene formation is investigated from a comparison between the desorption and the hydrogenation of ethylene as well as comparison between the ethylene and the 1,3-butadiene formation. Formation of subsurface carbon and hydrogen on both boron-modified Pd(111) and Pd(211) surfaces has also been evaluated, since these have been reported to affect both the activity and the selectivity of acetylene hydrogenation to produce ethylene on Pd surfaces. Our results provide some important insights into the Pd B catalysts for selective hydrogenation of acetylene and also for more complex hydrogenation systems, such as stereoselective hydrogenation of longer chain alkynes and selective hydrogenation of vegetable oil.

The surface modification of a mechanochemically prepared Ag/Al O catalyst compared with catalysts prepared by standard wet impregnated methods has been probed using two-dimensional T -T NMR correlations, HO temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and DRIFTS. The catalysts were examined for the selective catalytic reduction of NO using n-octane in the presence and absence of H. Higher activities were observed for the ball milled catalysts irrespective of whether H was added. This higher activity is thought to be related to the increased affinity of the catalyst surface towards the hydrocarbon relative to water, following mechanochemical preparation, resulting in higher concentrations of the hydrocarbon and lower concentrations of water at the surface. DRIFTS experiments demonstrated that surface isocyanate was formed significantly quicker and had a higher surface concentration in the case of the ball milled catalyst which has been correlated with the stronger interaction of the n-octane with the surface. This increased interaction may also be the cause of the reduced activation barrier measured for this catalyst compared with the wet impregnated system. The decreased interaction of water with the surface on ball milling is thought to reduce the effect of site blocking whilst still providing a sufficiently high surface concentration of water to enable effective hydrolysis of the isocyanate to form ammonia and, thereafter, N. Aiming at inexpensive Brønsted-acidic ionic liquids, suitable for industrial-scale catalysis, a family of protonic ionic liquids based on nitrogen bases and sulfuric acid has been developed. Variation of the molar ratio of sulfuric acid, χH2SO4, was used to tune acidity. The liquid structure was studied using 1H NMR and IR spectroscopies, revealing the existence of hydrogen-bonded clusters, [(HSO4)(H2SO4)]−, for χH2SO4 > 0.50. Acidity, quantified by Gutmann Acceptor Number (AN), was found to be closely related to the liquid structure. The ionic liquids were employed as acid catalysts in a model reaction; Fischer esterification of acetic acid with 1-butanol. The reaction rate depended on two factors; for χH2SO4 > 0.50, the key parameter was acidity (expressed as AN value), while for χH2SO4 > 0.50 it was the mass transport (solubility of starting materials in the ionic liquid phase). Building on this insight, the ionic liquid catalyst and reaction conditions have been chosen. Conversion values of over 95% were achieved under exceptionally mild conditions, and using an inexpensive ionic liquid, which could be recycled up to eight times without diminution in conversion or selectivity. It has been demonstrated how structural studies can underpin rational design and development of an ionic liquid catalyst, and in turn lead to a both greener and economically viable process.

N,O-ligated Pd(II) complexes show considerable promise for the oxidation of challenging secondary aliphatic alcohols. The crystal structures of the highly active complexes containing the 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxylic acid (HCA) and 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-sulfonic acid (HSA) ligands have been obtained. The (HSA)Pd(OAc)2 system can effectively oxidise a range of secondary alcohols, including unactivated alcohols, within 4–6 h using loadings of 0.5 mol%, while lower loadings (0.2 mol%) can be employed with extended reaction times. The influence of reaction conditions on catalyst degradation was also examined in these studies.

Abstract Image

A new experimental procedure based on attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy has been developed to investigate surface species under liquid phase reaction conditions. The technique has been tested by investigating the enhanced selectivity in the hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehyde citral over a 5% Pt/SiO2 catalyst toward unsaturated alcohols geraniol/nerol, which occurs when citronellal is added to the reaction. The change in selectivity is proposed to be the result of a change in the citral adsorption mode in the presence of citronellal. Short time on stream attenuated total internal reflection infrared spectroscopy has allowed identification of the adsorption modes of citral. With no citronellal, citral adsorbs through both the C═C and C═O groups; however, in the presence of citronellal, citral adsorption occurs through the C═O group only, which is proposed to be the cause of the altered reaction selectivity.

The ability of a gold palladium bimetallic catalyst to selectively oxidise toluene has been used to enhance the hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction of NOx, a reaction in which the interaction of partial oxidation intermediates is considered important. The combination of gold with palladium has a synergistic effect, producing a catalyst that is more active for NOx conversion than the arithmetic sum of the corresponding mono-metallic materials. Three regimes in the conversion profile of the AuPd catalyst are proposed relating to production and consumption of toluene derived species, such as benzaldehyde and benzonitrile. The possible role of these reaction intermediates in the toluene HC-SCR reaction is examined. Using 15NO, the formation of N2 and N2O is observed via the direct interaction between the nitrogen atom of benzonitrile and 15NO. The higher activity of the bimetallic catalyst for the NOx reduction reaction by toluene is discussed in the context of these partial oxidation intermediates.

A new pathway to (+)-inthomycin C is reported that exploits an O-directed free radical hydrostannation reaction on (−)-12 and a Stille cross-coupling as key steps. Significantly, the latter process was effected on 19 where a gauche-pentane repulsive interaction could interfere. Our stereochemical studies on the alkynol (−)-12 and the enyne (+)-7 confirm that Ryu and Hatakeyama’s (3S)-stereochemical revision of (+)-inthomycin C is invalid and that Zeeck and Taylor’s original (3R)-stereostructure for (+)-inthomycin C is correct.

Platinum (Pt) nanocrystals have demonstrated to be an effective catalyst in many heterogeneous catalytic processes. However, pioneer facets with highest activity have been reported differently for various reaction systems. Although Pt has been the most important counter electrode material for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), suitable atomic arrangement on the exposed crystal facet of Pt for triiodide reduction is still inexplicable. Using density functional theory, we have investigated the catalytic reaction processes of triiodide reduction over {100}, {111} and {411} facets, indicating that the activity follows the order of Pt(111) > Pt(411) > Pt(100). Further, Pt nanocrystals mainly bounded by {100}, {111} and {411} facets were synthesized and used as counter electrode materials for DSCs. The highest photovoltaic conversion efficiency of Pt(111) in DSCs confirms the predictions of the theoretical study. These findings have deepened the understanding of the mechanism of triiodide reduction at Pt surfaces and further screened the best facet for DSCs successfully.

Partial hydrogenation of acrolein, the simplest alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehyde, is not only a model system to understand the selectivity in heterogeneous catalysis, but also technologically an important reaction. In this work, the reaction on Pt(211) and Au(211) surfaces is thoroughly investigated using density functional theory calculations. The formation routes of three partial hydrogenation products, namely propenol, propanal and enol, on both metals are studied. It is found that the pathway to produce enol is kinetically favoured on Pt while on Au the route of forming propenol is preferred. Our calculations also show that the propanal formation follows an indirect pathway on Pt(211). An energy decomposition method to analyze the barrier is utilized to understand the selectivities at Pt(211) and Au(211), which reveals that the interaction energies between the reactants involved in the transition states play a key role in determining the selectivity difference.

Carbides are important phases in heterogeneous catalysis. However, the understanding of carbide phases is inadequate: Fe and Co are the two commercial catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis, and experimental work showed that Fe carbide is the active phase in FT synthesis, whereas the appearance of Co carbide is considered as a possible deactivation cause, TO understand very different catalytic roles of carbides, all the key elementary steps in FT synthesis, that is, CO dissociation, C(1) hydrogenation, and C(1)+C(1) coupling, are extensively investigated on both carbide surfaces using first principles calculations. In particular, the most important issues in FT synthesis, the activity and methane selectivity, on the carbide surfaces are quantitatively determined and analyzed. They are also discussed together with metallic Fe and Co surfaces. It is found that (i) Fe carbide is more active than metallic Fe and has similar methane selectivity to Fe, being consistent with the experiments; and (ii) Co carbide is less active than Co and has higher methane selectivity, providing evidence on the molecular level to support the suggestion that the formation of Co carbide is a cause of relatively high methane selectivity and deactivation on Co catalysts.
