Examining the University of Denver's Family Friendly Benefits Plans: A look at Creating More Family Friendly Benefits to Drive Employee Retention

In the latter half of the twentieth century the workforce dynamic changed when the number of women entering the workforce increased by record amounts. In direct opposition to this change was the inability of organizations to meet the needs of employees with childcare concerns. Organizations and employees alike are best served when policies, procedures, and benefits are implemented to achieve a positive work/life balance. Companies that institute benefits that are supportive to families observe decreases in turnover and increased employee retention. Employees who are offered family friendly resources have been known to stay with companies even when offered a higher salary elsewhere. Demonstrating that retention of valued employees is linked to an organizations ability to offer support for family needs.

Instrumentos y prácticas de enseñanza de las ciencias físicas y químicas en la Universidad de Valencia, durante el siglo XIX

This study is an attempt to reconstruct the evolution of spaces and scientific equipments used for the teaching of physics and chemistry in the University of Valencia in the 19th century. Through an analysis of the instruments' characteristics and their spatial distribution, the teaching programs and textbooks, as well as the profile of the target public, we try in this essay to understand the evolution of the didactic methods employed by the successive teachers and assistants when teaching physics and chemistry in the existing cabinets, amphitheatres and laboratories.

OrientatUA: Mobile Application to guide visual disabled people at the University of Alicante

This paper shows an iOS application to guide visual disabled people in the campus of the University of Alicante by voice indications. The user interface is adapted to visual disabled people, using a bigger visual typography and a bigger area for the tactile buttons. Moreover, the application provides voice indications when users touch any of the elements in the interface, telling them where they are and how they can reach destination.

The University of Alicante Library copy of Palmerin d'Oliva (London, 1637): A Bibliographical Description

The purpose of this article is to provide bibliographical information about a copy of the fourth edition of the two parts of Anthony Munday's translation of Palmerin d'Oliva (London, 1637; STC 19160) recently purchased by the University of Alicante Library and not mentioned in the standard bibliographies. The article contains a detailed bibliographical description based on Bowers's principles (1949) and is designed to be useful to scholars by making direct consultation of the copy in most cases unnecessary. The description is preceded by a short introduction to the literary text and its publication in England.

Women's Songs. The Lullaby in the Spanish Autonomous Region of Valencia

A lullaby is a song performed almost exclusively by women in all cultures to make children fall asleep. But traditional lullaby singing has declined due to social change. This study analyzes its structure and content thoroughly and aspects of this tradition providing information on usage, customs, themes and types of melody, and reflecting the importance of this form of cultural expression.

Evaluation of the Implementation of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) Methodology in the Didactics of the English Language in Preschool Education Course Taught in the Preschool Education Teacher Undergraduate Program at the University of Alicante

Although it is known that the Spanish current Educative System promotes using the Communicate Approach to teach foreign languages in schools, other recently designed approaches are also used to help students improve their skills when communicating in a foreign language. One of these approaches is Content and Language Integrated Learning, also known as CLIL, which is used to teach content courses using the English language as the language of instruction. This approach improves the students’ skills in English as the same time as they learn content from other areas. The goal of this thesis is to present a research project carried out at the University of Alicante during the academic year 2011-2012. With this research we obtained results that provide quantitative and qualitative data which explains how the use of the CLIL methodology affects the English level of students in the “Didactics of the English Language in Preschool Education” course in Preschool Education Teacher Undergraduate Program as students acquire the contents of the course.
