When it comes to helping to shape sustainable development, research is most useful when it bridges the science–implementation/management gap and when it brings development specialists and researchers into a dialogue (Hurni et al. 2004); can a peer-reviewed journal contribute to this aim? In the classical system for validation and dissemination of scientific knowledge, journals focus on knowledge exchange within the academic community and do not specifically address a ‘life-world audience’. Within a North-South context, another knowledge divide is added: the peer review process excludes a large proportion of scientists from the South from participating in the production of scientific knowledge (Karlsson et al. 2007). Mountain Research and Development (MRD) is a journal whose mission is based on an editorial strategy to build the bridge between research and development and ensure that authors from the global South have access to knowledge production, ultimately with a view to supporting sustainable development in mountains. In doing so, MRD faces a number of challenges that we would like to discuss with the td-net community, after having presented our experience and strategy as editors of this journal. MRD was launched in 1981 by mountain researchers who wanted mountains to be included in the 1992 Rio process. In the late 1990s, MRD realized that the journal needed to go beyond addressing only the scientific community. It therefore launched a new section addressing a broader audience in 2000, with the aim of disseminating insights into, and recommendations for, the implementation of sustainable development in mountains. In 2006, we conducted a survey among MRD’s authors, reviewers, and readers (Wymann et al. 2007): respondents confirmed that MRD had succeeded in bridging the gap between research and development. But we realized that MRD could become an even more efficient tool for sustainability if development knowledge were validated: in 2009, we began submitting ‘development’ papers (‘transformation knowledge’) to external peer review of a kind different from the scientific-only peer review (for ‘systems knowledge’). At the same time, the journal became open access in order to increase the permeability between science and society, and ensure greater access for readers and authors in the South. We are currently rethinking our review process for development papers, with a view to creating more space for communication between science and society, and enhancing the co-production of knowledge (Roux 2008). Hopefully, these efforts will also contribute to the urgent debate on the ‘publication culture’ needed in transdisciplinary research (Kueffer et al. 2007).

Monobrominated polystyrene (PStBr) chains were prepared using standard atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) procedures at 80 °C in THF, with monomer conversions allowed to proceed to approximately 40%. At this time, additional copper catalyst, reducing agent, and ligand were added to the unpurified reaction mixture, and the reaction was allowed to proceed at 50 °C in an atom transfer radical coupling (ATRC) phase. During this phase, polymerization continued to occur as well as coupling; expected due to the substantial amount of residual monomer remaining. This was confirmed using gel permeation chromatography (GPC), which showed increases in molecular weight not matching a simple doubling of the PStBr formed during ATRP, and an increase in monomer conversion after the second phase. When the radical trap 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane (MNP) was added to the ATRC phase, no further monomer conversion occurred and the resulting product showed a doubling of peak molecular weight (Mp), consistent with a radical trap-assisted ATRC (RTA-ATRC) reaction.

There is increasing recognition that transdisciplinary approaches are needed to create suitable knowledge for sustainable water management. However, there is no common understanding of what transdisciplinary research may be and there is very limited debate on potentials and challenges regarding its implementation. Against this background, this paper presents a conceptual framework for transdisciplinary co-production of knowledge in water management projects oriented towards more sustainable use of water. Moreover, first experiences with its implementation are discussed. In so doing, the focus lies on potentials and challenges related to the co-production of systems, target and transformation knowledge by researchers and local stakeholders.

Polyanhydrides have been given much attention in the literature recently because of their desirable properties as controlled drug delivery solutions. Drug therapies could be loaded into a polyanhydride matrix and protected from denaturation and removal from the body while being slowly eluted as the polyanhydride degraded yielding a tailorable concentration profile in the bloodstream at therapeutic levels. To that end, this report discusses the synthesis of a novel monomer for polyanhydride synthesis: 1,1'-(hexane-1,6-diyl)bis(5-oxopyrrolidine-3-carboxylic acid) henceforth known as CPyH monomer for (carboxypyrrolidone)hexane monomer.

Dibrominated polystyrene (BrPStBr) was produced by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) at 80 degrees C, using the bifunctional initiator benzal bromide to afford the telechelic precursor. The ATRP reaction was stopped around 40% monomer conversion and directly converted into an radical trap-assisted atom transfer radical coupling (RTA-ATRC) reaction by lowering the temperature to 50 degrees C, and adding the radical trap 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane (MNP) along with additional catalyst, reducing agent, and ligand to match ATRC-type reaction conditions. In an attempt to induce intramolecular coupling, rather than solely intermolecular coupling and elongation, the total reaction volume was increased by the addition of varying amounts of THF. Cyclization, along with intermolecular coupling and elongation, occurred in all cases, with the extent of ring closure a function of the total reaction volume. The cyclic portion of the coupled product was found to have a (G) value around 0.8 by GPC analysis, consistent with the reduction in hydrodynamic volume of a cyclic polymer compared to its linear analog. Analysis of the sequence by H-1 NMR confirmed that propagation was suppressed nearly completely during the RTA-ATRC phase, with percent monomer conversion remaining constant after the ATRP phase. This work was devoted to individual child development. Psychogenetic research has emphasised the importance of social factors in children's intellectual development and two social factors are looked at here, family size and birth order. The effect of the formal parameters is, however, very unstable and they should therefore be considered together with certain informal factors. Of these, parental educational style, which is an expression of national traditions at the family level, is of particular interest. Educational style is culture-dependent and only a comparative cross-cultural study can reveal the real mechanisms through which educational style influences children's intellectual and personality development. Dumitrascu carried out an experimental cross-cultural study dedicated to the effects of family environment on child intellectual development. This involved three distinct populations, each of which has a distinct status in their geographical area, namely Romanians, Romanies from Romania, and Russians from the Republic of Moldova. It showed a significant difference between child intelligence in those from large families and in only children, with a huge gap in the case of Romany children. This suggests that the simultaneous action of several negative factors (low socio-economic status, large family size, socio-cultural isolation of the population) may delay a child's development. Subjected to such a precarious environment, Romany children do not seek self-realisation but rather struggle to overcome hardship and the majority remain outside civilisation. Unfortunately, adult Romanies rarely show concern about their children's successful social integration, placing no value on the school as a major socialising tool. This leads to the conclusion that a major effort is needed to help Romanies' social integration.

The group set out to analyse the dynamics of elite groups in Ukraine today, both internal and inter-group, and their ideas on major socio-economic, political and foreign policies, in order to identify the degree of competitiveness between groups, methods of elite recruitment and the degree of elite response, which influence both the political agenda and the results of political activity. Having observed the contemporary debate and identified the pre-eminence of various elite groups in the decision-making process at the regional and state levels, they also sought to determine the type and degree of elite consensus which might be achieved in contemporary Ukraine. They also considered the extent of concealed power, in terms of covert interaction more characteristic of corporate societies, which might allow for the abuse of authority within a technically democratic system. The group then went on to consider the stages of counter-elite transformation and the continuing importance of the communist elite, as well as the issue of rivalry versus consensus. They see their findings as relevant not only to the Central and Eastern European context but also to the situation in Latin America today.

This research focused on the re-emerging of national and minority identities and the concomitant hostilities emerging from them in Hungary and in Romania. In particular the findings indicate that extremist incidents against members of minority groups on the local level seem to follow patterns in publicised media events. Violent attacks by skinheads against Gypsies in Hungary are often isolated incidents but are also inadvertently supported by biased media coverage, hostile majority attitudes and stereotyped behaviour reproduced in the media. The research also indicates that extremism both in Hungary against Gypsies and in Romania against Hungarians is of three kinds: organised within the framework of extremist groups, state-supported violence (both real and symbolic), and isolated, local instances with a few perpetrators committing atrocities. However, and this is a positive development, with rising interethnic tensions and extremist attacks prevalent in Hungary and Romania, there is also a parallel emergence of a more sophisticated human and minority rights campaign to combat them.

The intracellular protozoan parasites Theileria parva and T. annulata transform the cells they infect, inducing uncontrolled proliferation. This is not a trivial event as, in addition to permanently switching on the complex pathways that govern all steps of the cell cycle, the built-in apoptotic safety mechanisms that prevent 'illegitimate' cell replication also need to be inactivated. Recent experiments show that the NF-kappa B and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PtdIns-3K) pathways are important participants in the transformation process. I kappa B kinase (IKK), a pivotal kinase complex in the NF-kappa B pathway, is recruited to the parasite surface where it becomes activated. The PtdIns-3K/Akt/PKB pathway is also constitutively activated in a parasite-dependent manner, but contrary to IKK, activation is probably not triggered by direct association with the parasite.
