The mechanical behavior of the vertebrate skull is often modeled using free-body analysis of simple geometric structures and, more recently, finite-element (FE) analysis. In this study, we compare experimentally collected in vivo bone strain orientations and magnitudes from the cranium of the American alligator with those extrapolated from a beam model and extracted from an FE model. The strain magnitudes predicted from beam and FE skull models bear little similarity to relative and absolute strain magnitudes recorded during in vivo biting experiments. However, quantitative differences between principal strain orientations extracted from the FE skull model and recorded during the in vivo experiments were smaller, and both generally matched expectations from the beam model. The differences in strain magnitude between the data sets may be attributable to the level of resolution of the models, the material properties used in the FE model, and the loading conditions (i.e., external forces and constraints). This study indicates that FE models and modeling of skulls as simple engineering structures may give a preliminary idea of how these structures are loaded, but whenever possible, modeling results should be verified with either in vitro or preferably in vivo testing, especially if precise knowledge of strain magnitudes is desired. At present, little is known about signal transduction mechanisms in schistosomes, which cause the disease of schistosomiasis. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways, which are evolutionarily conserved from yeast to Homo sapiens, play key roles in multiple cellular processes. Here, we reconstructed the hypothetical MAPK signaling pathways in Schistosoma japonicum and compared the schistosome pathways with those of model eukaryote species. We identified 60 homologous components in the S. japoncium MAPK signaling pathways. Among these, 27 were predicted to be full-length sequences. Phylogenetic analysis of these proteins confirmed the evolutionary conservation of the MAPK signaling pathways. Remarkably, we identified S. japonicum homologues of GTP-binding protein beta and alpha-I subunits in the yeast mating pathway, which might be involved in the regulation of different life stages and female sexual maturation processes as well in schistosomes. In addition, several pathway member genes, including ERK, JNK, Sja-DSP, MRAS and RAS, were determined through quantitative PCR analysis to be expressed in a stage-specific manner, with ERK, JNK and their inhibitor Sja-DSP markedly upregulated in adult female schistosomes. Molecular interactions between microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and water were investigated by attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR/IR) spectroscopy. Moisture-content-dependent IR spectra during a drying process of wet MCC were measured. In order to distinguish overlapping O–H stretching bands arising from both cellulose and water, principal component analysis (PCA) and, generalized two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) and second derivative analysis were applied to the obtained spectra. Four typical drying stages were clearly separated by PCA, and spectral variations in each stage were analyzed by 2DCOS. In the drying time range of 0–41 min, a decrease in the broad band around 3390 cm−1 was observed, indicating that bulk water was evaporated. In the drying time range of 49–195 min, decreases in the bands at 3412, 3344 and 3286 cm−1 assigned to the O6H6cdots, three dots, centeredO3′ interchain hydrogen bonds (H-bonds), the O3H3cdots, three dots, centeredO5 intrachain H-bonds and the H-bonds in Iβ phase in MCC, respectively, were observed. The result of the second derivative analysis suggests that water molecules mainly interact with the O6H6cdots, three dots, centeredO3′ interchain H-bonds. Thus, the H-bonding network in MCC is stabilized by H-bonds between OH groups constructing O6H6cdots, three dots, centeredO3′ interchain H-bonds and water, and the removal of the water molecules induces changes in the H-bonding network in MCC.

There are many physical factors that can affect the self-heating rate of coal. The presence of seam gas has often been referred to as inhibiting coal self-heating due to the limited access of oxidation sites created by the presence of the gas adsorbed on the coal pores. Similarly, the presence of bed moisture in the coal also acts as an inhibitor of oxidation by blocking access of air into the pores. Gas drainage of a coal seam prior to mining removes both gas and moisture from the seam. Bulk coal self-heating tests in a two-metre column on both gassy, as-mined and gas-drained, dried high volatile bituminous coal show that removal of gas and moisture from the coal accelerates the rate of self-heating to thermal runaway from 8.5 days to 4.25 days, from a start temperature of 30°C, with an airflow of 0.25 L/min. The corresponding gas evolution pattern for each of these situations is different. Therefore, it is necessary to take this change in coal condition into consideration when developing a spontaneous combustion management plan.
