Estudamos o comportamento da artéria testicular e seus ramos, bem como o número e distribuição dos vasos penetrantes, em 30 pares de testículos de eqüinos da raça Puro-Sangue Inglês, adultos, mediante análise de esquemas de modelos obtidos pela corrosão após injeção de acetato de vinil. Verificamos que a artéria testicular apresenta 5 diferentes tipos de arranjos vasculares, isto é: a artéria testicular emite número variável de ramos, de 2 a 10 ramos mediais e de 3 a 11 ramos laterais (35 vezes - 58,4%); ou cede de 3 a 8 ramos adicionais e ao nível da metade de seu percurso, na borda livre do órgão, divide-se em um ramo medial e outro lateral (12 vezes - 20,0%); ou divide a irrigação do órgão com ramos denominados de complementares, 1 ramo (6 vezes - 10,0%) e 3 ramos (1 vez - 1,6%); ou ainda fornece os ramos medial e lateral, com predominância do lateral (3 vezes - 5,0%) ou do medial (3 vezes - 5,0%). Quanto à distribuição dos vasos penetrantes nos diferentes quadrantes, observamos que em mediana, por ordem, os testículos direitos apresentam o maior número de vasos penetrantes no quadrante craniomedial (13,0), seguido pelos quadrantes craniolateral (10,5), caudolateral (7,0) e caudomedial (6,5). Nos testículos esquerdos, também o quadrante craniomedial mostra o maior número de vasos penetrantes (12,5), seguido pelos quadrantes craniolateral (10,0), e com equivalência os quadrantes caudomedial e caudolateral (7,0). Anastomoses (8 vezes - 13,3%) foram localizadas todas na face ventral do órgão. Comparando o número de vasos penetrantes dos testículos direitos e esquerdos, verificamos que não existem diferenças estatisticamente significativas nos eqüinos da raça Puro-Sangue Inglês.

Um reprodutor bovino, Bos indicus, com varicocele bilateral detectado por palpação e ultra-sonografia foi acompanhado por um período de 24 meses quanto à biometria testicular, valores espermáticos e concentração de testosterona comparados entre as estações do ano e outros animais da mesma espécie. As alterações morfológicas dos defeitos maiores e menores não variaram entre o touro com a patologia e os demais touros, no entanto, durante o verão o touro com varicocele apresentou maior percentual de defeitos totais se comparado aos demais touros da mesma espécie (49,86%±6,9 e 27,91%±2,9). O animal apresentou maior percentual de defeitos maiores no verão se comparado às outras estações do ano. Os achados de necrópsia confirmaram o diagnóstico clínico. Pode-se concluir que esta patologia, caracterizada por trombose nos vasos do cordão espermático, comprometeu a termoregulação determinando degeneração testicular severa. O aumento das concentrações de testosterona sérica sugerem a diminuição da retenção de esteroides nos testículos pelo plexo pampiniforme, a produção espermática estava anormal.

Técnicas de biópsia, caracterizadas pela remoção de segmentos de órgãos e tecidos para análise histopatológica, não são indicadas no auxílio diagnóstico de alterações testiculares para animais ameaçados de extinção, por não serem totalmente isentas de riscos. Neste sentido, é de grande interesse que se desenvolvam técnicas de biópsia testicular cada vez mais seguras e com o mínimo de conseqüências negativas. Com este intuito três onças pintadas (Panthera onca) foram submetidas a exames de Citologia Aspirativa por Agulha Fina (CAAF). Amostras foram obtidas através da punção aspirativa dos testículos, esfregaços foram confeccionados, corados com Panótico e analisados sob Microscopia Óptica. Simultaneamente foram realizadas coletas de sêmen para avaliação do volume, pH, concentração, motilidade, vigor e morfologia espermáticas. Quanto à avaliação espermática, os animais apresentaram valores semelhantes aos encontrados na literatura quanto ao volume, pH, motilidade, vigor e morfologia espermáticas. Quanto a concentração espermática os animais apresentaram valores abaixo dos encontrados na literatura. Nos exames de CAAF, todas as gerações de células germinativas foram identificadas, indicando espermatogênese normal em todos os animais, com exceção das espermátides finais duplas que ainda não foram relatadas como achados em punções testiculares de outras espécies, o que vem confirmar a elevada porcentagem de células teratológicas encontradas nesses animais. Desta forma, podemos concluir que a CAAF testicular é um método diagnóstico auxiliar importante na detecção de alterações testiculares em casos de sub ou infertilidade, podendo ser utilizados na rotina de investigação do trato reprodutivo masculino, quando o exame histopatológico, por ser um método altamente invasivo, é desaconselhável.

The rete testis of the cat consists of 3 parts: a septal or interlobular part; a mediastinal part and a tunical part. The septal part contains the septal or transitory tubuli recti and the tubuli recti. The transitory tubules are formed as a confluence of the seminiferous tubules at the apex of the testicular lobules and the tubuli recti. The mediastinal rete is formed of long, straight channels which increase in size and become more irregular and anastomotic below the tunica albuginea at the cranial extremity of the testis. The end is characterized as the tunical part of the rete testis and communicates with the extratesticular rete testis. The channels all parts of the rete are lined by simple cuboidal or columnar epithelium. These epithelial channels are supported by a connective tissue containing smooth muscle cells. The framework tissue of the rete is more conspicuous at the cranial extremity of the testis, with a mio-connective matrix organization.

The effects of exposure to lead on endocrine function and the reproductive parameters were studied in pubertal rats treated with 1.0 g l(-1) lead acetate in drinking water for 20 days (subacute group) or 9 months (chronic group) in addition to i.v. injections of lead acetate (0.1 mg 100 g(-1) body wt.) every 10 (subacute group) or 15 days (chronic group). Although basal levels of testosterone were higher both in plasma and in testes of acutely intoxicated animals, the circulating levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) were not affected in either group, nor was the LH-releasing hormone content of the median eminence. The density of [I-125]LH/human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) binding sites in testicular homogenates was reduced by saturnism in both groups, concomitant with a significantly increased apparent affinity constant of the hormone-receptor complex. These data can be viewed as the result of a mixture of specific lead toxicity (e.g. at the enzyme level) with other more general actions (e.g. at the level of the hypothalamus-pituitary-testicular axis).

One of the most studied ceramic superconductors for application has been, undoubtedly, Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. Although being a multiphasic material, it has proved to have great advantages compared to other ceramic systems. Measurements of the elastic energy loss and modulus (anelastic spectroscopy) as a function of temperature call distinguish among different atomic jumps that occur inside the various phases or at different local ordering. In this paper, mechanical loss spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta bar shaped samples, made by a conventional method, have been measured between 80 and 600 K, using a torsion pendulum operating in frequencies below 50 Hz, for samples annealed in vacuum up to 600 K. Possible relaxation mechanisms are proposed to explain the origin of the mechanical-loss peaks observed 300 and 500 K. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The presence of interstitial elements in metals cause strong changes in their physical, chemical or mechanical properties. These interstitial impurities interact with the metallic matrix atoms by a relaxation process known as stress induced ordering. Relaxation processes give rise to a peak in the internal friction spectrum, known as Snock effect. The presence of substitutional solutes has a strong influence on Snoek effect, particularly if the substitutional solute element is the one, which interacts with the interstitial element. Anelastic spectroscopy measurements provide information of the behavior of these impurities in the metallic matrix. In this paper, polycrystalline samples of Nb-4.7 at.%Ta alloy have been analyzed in the as-received condition. Measurements of anelastic spectroscopy were carried out using an inverted torsion pendulum, operating with frequency of 2.0-30.0 Hz and in a temperature range between 300 and 700 K. It was observed the presence of a relaxation structure that have been attributed to stress induced ordering due to interstitial atoms around atoms of the metallic matrix. The relaxation structure have been decomposed in its constituent peaks, what it allowed to identify the following relaxation processes: Ta-O, Nb-O and Nb-N. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Nucleoli are the sites of biosynthesis of ribosomal precursors. In this work the nucleolar activity at interphase and the meiotic cells of the testis in five species of triatomines were analysed by means of silver staining. Several nucleolar blocks in the polyploid nuclei of testicular tubules were observed, whereas only one nucleolar body could be seen in the spermatogonial nuclei of all five species. A single nucleolar body was evident in the 'confused stage' of Triatoma brasiliensis, T. delpontei, T. lecticularia and T. rubrovaria, while T. sordida presented two nucleolar dots. The existence of small, silver-stained dots in some metaphase I chromosomes of T. brasiliensis and T. sordida is reported. The number of nucleolar dots present in spermatids of each species varied within and among species. It is suggested that in addition to providing information on rRNA biosynthesis, studies of nucleolar organizing activity can also be important sources of data on differentiation patterns and species development.

Measurements of internal friction as a function of temperature were carried out in samples of mobium containing different amounts of interstitial solutes (oxygen and nitrogen) and one sample of mobium containing initially only nitrogen as interstitial solute. The experimental spectra of internal friction as a function of temperature were obtained with a torsion pendulum of the inverted Ke-type and resolved, using the method of successive subtraction, into a series of constituent Debye peaks corresponding to different interactions. For each relaxation process it was possible to obtain the height (Q(max)(-1)) and temperature (T-p) of the peak, the activation energy (E) and the relaxation time (t(o)). The height, shape and temperature of these peaks depend on the concentration of interstitial elements. The observed peaks were associated with matrix-interstitial (Nb-O, Nb-N) and interstitial-interstitial (O-N) interaction processes. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Internal friction measurements were made in the Nb-Ti alloy containing 0.3 wt. % of Ti, doped with various quantities of oxygen (0.04 to 0.08 wt. %) utilizing a torsion pendulum. These measurements were performed in the temperature range of 300 K to 700 K with the oscillation frequency about 1.0 Hz. The experimental results showed relaxation peaks due the stress induced ordering of oxygen atom and pairs of oxygen atom around the niobium atoms (metallic matrix) and around titanium atoms (substitutional solute).

The LH-RH analog LH-RH-A (des-Gly10,[D-Trp6]-LH-RH ethylamide) was administered in pharmacological doses (20-mu-g/kg, sc) to adult male cats for 15 days and its effect on testis and adrenal function was determined. Daily administration of the analog promoted a 3-fold increase in plasma testosterone levels after 7 days, indicating a stimulatory effect of LH-RH-A (mean +/- SD for 6 treated cats, 1.88 +/- 0.35 vs 0.51 +/- 0.08 ng/ml for 6 control cats). After 15 days the LH-RH-A-treated group exhibited a similar plasma testosterone concentration as the control group (mean +/- SD, 0.96 +/- 0.35 ng/ml vs 0.88 +/- 0.39 ng/ml, respectively), similar testicular and adrenal weights and no significant differences in the spermatogenic process. However, semiquantitative analysis of the zona fasciculata of the adrenals from the LH-RH-A-treated group showed a significant accumulation of a substance not stained by hematoxylin-eosin or Schiff periodic acid (mean +/- SD of index of accumulation was 3.50 +/- 0.4 for treated cats vs 2.20 +/- 0.3 for control cats). The present results show that pharmacological doses of LH-RH-A have an effect on the adrenal cortex of cats without modifying spermatogenesis or plasma testosterone levels.

Anelastic spectroscopy measurements (internal friction) are sensitive tools for the study of defects in solids, in particular the mobility of interstitial oxygen. Samples of Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy were analyzed after being submitted to two thermal treatments in vacuum, one at 973 K and another at 673 K. Anelastic spectroscopy measurements were performed using a torsion pendulum operating at around 38 Hz and at a temperature range of 88 and 700 K with heating rate of 1 K/min and vacuum better than 10(-5) Torr. Complex relaxation structures reversible with new thermal treatments were observed. These relaxation structures were attributed to O-M structural phase transitions. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Since high-temperature superconductors were discovered, several studies have been made on their physical properties, attempting to associate them to the origin of superconductivity. Obviously, the oxygen atoms interstitially dissolved in the matrix have an important role in superconductivity, since they move easily in the lattice. In addition, they contribute to hole creation in the CuO2 planes. Anelastic spectroscopy ( internal friction) measurements are sensitive tools for the study of defects in solids, in particular for oxygen mobility. In this paper, Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y samples with several different amounts of interstitial oxygen were analysed by means of anelastic spectroscopy measurements. The measurements were performed by using a torsion pendulum operating at a frequency of about 40 Hz. Complex relaxation structures were observed and attributed to the shift of the oxygen interstitial atoms in BiO chains.

Since gonadal denervation and pineal deafferentation by cervical superior ganglionectomy affect sexual development, this study was performed to evaluate testicular steroidogenesis, spermatogenesis and the cervical superior ganglion (CSG) histology in rats treated with guanethidine (GD). The treatment was performed by GD s.c. injections for 3 weeks, from the 21st day of age to the 41st day of age (pre-puberty), when the animals were sacrificed. Different doses were used: group A=10 mg/kg/day, group B=50 mg/kg/day and saline (control group). Testicular denervation was confirmed by HPLC for catecholamines in testicular tissue. Testicular concentrations (TC) of progesterone (P4) and testosterone (T) were measured by RIA. Significantly higher TC of P4 and lower TC of T were observed only in group A in comparison with group B and the control group. No alteration of sperm production was observed in either treated group. Histological analysis of CSG showed only few neuronal alterations in group A rats, while in group B the nervous cells were practically destroyed. This suggests that 10 mg/kg/day GD treatment probably produces a specific blockade of 17 alpha-hydroxylase/17,20 desmolase at pre-puberty leading to a decrease of the androgen production. However, in the 50 mg/kg/day group no differences were observed concerning the steroid profiles, this result being attributed to the extensive damage to the CSG observed only in group B. The CSG destruction causes deafferentation of the pineal gland producing abolishment of the inhibition of the 17 alpha-hydroxylase/17,20 desmolase promoted by melatonin or by an out of phase production of androgen.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of perinatal estrogen exposure in the fertility of rats. Thus, rats were treated with estrogen on the 21st or 22nd day of intra-uterine life or treated with estrogen immediately after birth. It was observed that the testicular descent of males and beginning of puberty of females were advanced in all estrogen-treated groups. The females from estrogen-treated groups showed reduced frequency of estrous in 15 consecutive days of study, and there was an increase in estrous duration. Their fertility also were impaired and a reduction in the number of alive fetuses, as well as enhancement of pre- and postimplantation loss, mainly in the group treated with estrogen on the 21st day of intra-uterine life. However, the alterations observed in the fertility of estrogen-treated male rats were slighter and only females mated with male rats from the group treated with estrogen immediately after birth showed enhanced preimplantation loss. We suggest that the reproductive function is impaired by exposure to estrogen in the perinatal life of rats, and that the mechanisms involved in this effect are distinct for males and females.
