Dinoflagellate cyst counts of ODP Site 1081, Benguela Upwelling, Miocene-Pliocene

Using the Late Miocene to Pliocene organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst record of ODP Site 1081 we reconstruct and discuss the early upwelling history over the Walvis Ridge with a special focus on the movement of the Angola-Benguela Front (ABF). We suggest that during the Late Miocene the Angola Current flowed southwards over the Walvis Ridge more frequently than today because the ABF was probably located further south as a result of a weaker meridional temperature gradient. A possible strengthening of the meridional gradient during the latest Miocene to early Pliocene in combination with uplift of south-western Africa intensified the upwelling along the coast and increased the upwelling's filaments over the Walvis Ridge. An intermediate period from 6.2 to 5.5 Ma is shown by the dominance of Habibacysta tectata, cysts of a cool-tolerant dinoflagellate known from the northern Atlantic, indicating changing oceanic conditions contemporaneous with the Messinian Salinity Crisis. From 4.3 Ma on, the upwelling signal got stronger again and waters were well-mixed and nutrient-rich. Our results indicate a northward migration of the ABF as early as 7 Ma and the initial stepwise intensification of the BUS.

Bloche-Maxwell treatment of amplification of high harmonic seed in soft x-ray laser amplifiers in both direct and chirped amplifications

Seeding plasma-based softx-raylaser (SXRL) demonstrated diffraction-limited, fully coherent in space and in time beam but with energy not exceeding 1 μJ per pulse. Quasi-steady-state (QSS) plasmas demonstrated to be able to store high amount of energy and then amplify incoherent SXRL up to several mJ. Using 1D time-dependant Bloch–Maxwell model including amplification of noise, we demonstrated that femtosecond HHG cannot be efficiently amplified in QSS plasmas. However, using Chirped Pulse Amplification concept on HHG seed allows to extract most of the stored energy, reaching up to 5 mJ in fully coherent pulses that can be compressed down to 130 fs.

Study of rapid ionisation for simulation of soft X-ray lasers with the 2D hydro-radiative code ARWEN

We present our fast ionisation routine used to study transient softX-raylasers with ARWEN, a two-dimensional hydrodynamic code incorporating adaptative mesh refinement (AMR) and radiative transport. We compute global rates between ion stages assuming an effective temperature between singly-excited levels of each ion. A two-step method is used to obtain in a straightforward manner the variation of ion populations over long hydrodynamic time steps. We compare our model with existing theoretical results both stationary and transient, finding that the discrepancies are moderate except for large densities. We simulate an existing Molybdenum Ni-like transient softX-raylaser with ARWEN. Use of the fast ionisation routine leads to a larger increase in temperature and a larger gain zone than when LTE datatables are used.

Comparison of natural and forced amplification regimes in plasma-based soft-x-ray lasers seeded by high-order harmonic

The amplification of high-order harmonics (HOH) in a plasma-based amplifier is a multiscale, temporal phenomenon that couples plasma hydrodynamics, atomic processes, and HOH electromagnetic fields. We use a one-dimensional, time-dependent Maxwell-Bloch code to compare the natural amplification regime and another regime where plasma polarization is constantly forced by the HOH. In this regime, a 10-MW (i.e., 100 times higher than current seeded soft x-ray laser power), 1.5-μJ, 140-fs pulse free from the parasitic temporal structures appearing on the natural amplification regime can be obtained.

Análisis estructural de algunas obras de Félix Candela mediante modelos de Elementos Finitos

Por su facilidad constructiva y la relativa sencillez de su análisis estructural, el paraboloide hiperbólico de hormigón armado es una forma profusamente utilizada por el arquitecto Félix Candela (1910-1997). En este artículo se analiza el comportamiento de varias de esas obras. Concretamente dos paralelogramos alabeados [1], el restaurante Los Manantiales (México) y la Iglesia de Guadalupe (Madrid). Se explica la geometría del paraboloide hiperbólico y se describe brevemente el análisis estructural presentado por Félix Candela. Los resultados presentados posteriormente confirman la distribución de esfuerzos descrita por Candela. En todos los casos estudiados las tensiones resultan ser admisibles para el hormigón. Se ha verificado también el comportamiento de membrana de las estructuras mediante un factor cuyo valor oscila entre 0 (flexión pura) y 1 (membrana pura). El comportamiento se aleja o acerca al de membrana pura en función de las condiciones de apoyo como ya recalcó el arquitecto madrileño

Suplementación de raciones para cebo intensivo de terneros con aceites vegetales: rendimientos productivos, calidad de la canal, de la grasa y de la carne

Se han estudiado los efectos de la incorporación de aceites de origen vegetal sobre los rendimientos productivos, calidad de la canal y de la grasa en el ganado vacuno. Se utilizaron 240 terneros agrupados en 24 lotes de 10 terneros cada uno. Las raciones experimentales fueron: Tratamiento Control (4% de aceite de palma), Oliva (4,8% de jabón cálcico de aceite de oliva), Soja (4% de aceite de soja). De cada lote se seleccionó al azar un ternero (8 terneros por tratamiento) para diseccionar su 6ª costilla. No se han observado diferencias significativas entre tratamientos para ningún parámetro productivo ni de calidad de la canal. Los animales que consumieron aceite de oliva presentaron un mayor contenido (P=0,09) en C18:2 cis-9, trans-11 CLA en la grasa intramuscular que los que consumieron palma.

Suplementación de raciones para cebo intensivo de terneros con aceites vegetales: calidad de carne

Se han estudiado los efectos de la incorporación de aceites de origen vegetal sobre la calidad de carne en el ganado vacuno. Se utilizaron 240 terneros agrupados en 24 lotes de 10 terneros cada uno. Las raciones experimentales fueron: Tratamiento Control (4% de aceite de palma), Oliva (4,8% de jabón cálcico de aceite de oliva), Soja (4% de aceite de soja). De cada lote se seleccionó al azar un ternero (8 terneros por tratamiento) para diseccionar su 6ª costilla. Se tomaron medidas de pH, color y textura del músculo Longissimus dorsi. Por último se realizó un análisis sensorial mediante un panel de catadores en el que se analizaron los parámetros de olor, textura y flavor de la carne. La carne de los animales alimentados con aceite de palma (Control) presentó el valor más alto (P<0,05) en la coordenada a*, y la carne de los terneros alimentados con aceite de soja presentó el valor del área total más bajo (P<0,001). En el pH, medido después de descongelar la carne envasada al vacío para realizar la prueba de color, no se observan diferencias significativas entre los tratamientos (P>0,05). En el análisis sensorial de la carne no se han observado diferencias significativas en los parámetros estudiados.
