Apropriaçâo da terra e formaçâo de grandes patimônios fundiários na fronteira sul do Brasil, através dos inventários post mortem (1800-1860)

This article is dedicated to the study the ways of appropriation of land in the south border of Brazil, in the first half of the century XIX. The historiography has, for tradition, associated the appropriation of large tracts of land, in Rio Grande do Sul, with royal donations. That would have been made, mainly, in the form of 'sesmarias' donations. However, a more detained study shows than the public concessions were just one among other forms of appropriation of the land used by families that accomplished a voracious accumulation of lands. Among other sources, inventories post mortem, registrations of concessions of lands and official correspondences are used. The main analysis focus relapses on the municipal district of Alegrete, between 1800 and 1870

De ocupantes a propietarios, los conflictos entre vecinos de la frontera bonaerense. Chascomús y Ranchos, 1800-1840

En esta perspectiva, que intenta desentrañar las continuidades y rupturas entre el orden colonial y el entramado político y social del rosismo, nuestra intención es aportar un análisis sobre los litigios entre vecinos cuando la posesión de hecho sobre un terreno estaba en vías de convertirse en propiedad plena, cada vez que se accedía a los títulos mediante los distintos sistemas de otorgamiento de tierras públicas, desde los últimos años del período colonial hasta la finalización de la aplicación de la enfiteusis en la década de 1840, centrando la atención en la ocupación del territorio y los derechos adquiridos en los partidos de Chascomús y Ranchos. Aquí se pone de manifiesto el reconocimiento local de los estancieros y hacendados y los motivos de las disputas. A partir del análisis de los litigios se aprecia el juego de intereses de los hacendados y las conexiones con el poder civil en la frontera que se definen en la resolución extrajudicial del conflicto. Por otro lado se examinará el rol de las autoridades y los fundamentos de los dictámenes

Autonomia e hierarquia em duas comunidades de escravos : Os casos George (Alabama, Estados Unidos, 1847) e Lino (Vassouras, Brasil, 1871)

This article seeks argue that the search for autonomy among slaves necessarily created hierarchies within the community where they were inserted. Through two cases compared, George in U.S. and Lino in Brazil, seeks to show that a notion of slave community was built by the social actors who were part of it

At surface behaviour of adult male southern elephant seals from King George Island from expedition JUB2000

Adult male southern elephant seals instrumented in 2000 on King George Island (n = 13), travelled both to the north (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231580, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231585) and to the east (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231571, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231579, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261708, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261709, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261710, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261711) of the Antarctic Peninsula. Five males (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231571, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231579, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231580, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261710, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231585) remained within 500 km of the island and focusing movements in the Bransfield Strait and around the Antarctic Peninsula. Sea-surface temperatures encountered by these animals showed little variation and they seemed to move about irrespective of sea ice cover, but frequented areas of shallow bathymetry. Three males (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261708, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261709, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261711) moved as far as 75°S to the east of the peninsula, into the Weddell Sea, with maximum distances of more than 1500 km from King George Island. They travelled into the Weddell Sea along the western continental shelf break until they reached the region of the Filchner Trough outflow. Here the bathymetry consists of canyons and ridges which support the intensive mixing between the warm saline waters of the Weddell Gyre and the very cold outflow waters with Ice Shelf water ingredients at the Antarctic Slope Front. Another five data sets were shorter then 40 days, and excluded from analyses (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231568, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231576, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231572, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231577, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.264710). A computer animation was developed to visualize the animal movements in relation to the extent and concentration of sea ice (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.509404). The need for re-instrumentation of adult males from King George Island is highlighted to investigate whether males continue to travel to similar areas and to obtain higher resolution data.
