Transport and magnetic properties of flux-grown Nd1−xPbxMnO3 single crystals (x=0.15–0.5) are studied in the temperature range 300–77 K and 280–2 K, respectively. Magnetization measurements with a superconducting quantum interference device confirm a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition around 110, 121, 150, 160, and 178 K for x=0.15, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5, respectively. Four probe resistivity measurements at low temperatures show a monotonic increase for x=0.15 which represents a ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) phase. For Nd0.8Pb0.2MnO3 there is a slope change present in the resistivity profile at 127 K where metal to insulator transition (MI) sets in. For x=0.3 this MI transition is more prominent. However, both these samples have FMI phase at low temperature. When the concentration of lead increases (x>0.3) the sample displays a clear insulator to metal transition with a low temperature ferromagnetic metallic phase. On the basis of these measurements we have predicted the phase diagram of Nd1−xPbxMnO3. Magnetization measurements by a vibration sample magnetometer point out the appreciable differences between zero field cooled and field cooled profiles below the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature for all x. These are indicative of magnetic frustration.

Although Al(1-x)Ga(x)N semiconductors are used in lighting, displays and high-power amplifiers, there is no experimental thermodynamic information on nitride solid solutions. Thermodynamic data are useful for assessing the intrinsic stability of the solid solution with respect to phase separation and extrinsic stability in relation to other phases such as metallic contacts. The activity of GaN in Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution is determined at 1100 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell: Ga + Al(1-x)Ga(x)N/Fe, Ca(3)N(2)//CaF(2)//Ca(3)N(2), N(2) (0.1 MPa), Fe. The solid-state cell is based on single crystal CaF(2) as the electrolyte and Ca(3)N(2) as the auxiliary electrode to convert the nitrogen chemical potential established by the equilibrium between Ga and Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution into an equivalent fluorine potential. Excess Gibbs free energy of mixing of the solid solution is computed from the results. Results suggest an unusual mixing behavior: a mild tendency for ordering at three discrete compositions (x = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75) superimposed on predominantly positive deviation from ideality. The lattice parameters exhibit slight deviation from Vegard's law, with the a-parameter showing positive and the c-parameter negative deviation. Although the solid solution is stable in the full range of compositions at growth temperatures, thermodynamic instability is indicated at temperatures below 410 K in the composition range 0.26 <= x <= 0.5. At 355 K, two biphasic regions appear, with terminal solid solutions stable only for 0 <= x <= 0.26 and 0.66 <= x <= 1. The range of terminal solid solubility reduces with decreasing temperature. We show that a fluid under strong spatially periodic confinement displays a glass transition within mode-coupling theory at a much lower density than the corresponding bulk system. We use fluctuating hydrodynamics, with confinement imposed through a periodic potential whose wavelength plays an important role in our treatment. To make the calculation tractable we implement a detailed calculation in one dimension. Although we do not expect simple 1d fluids to show a glass transition, our results are indicative of the behavior expected in higher dimensions. In a certain region of parameter space we observe a three-step relaxation reported recently in computer simulations [S. H. Krishnan, Ph.D. thesis, Indian Institute of Science (2005); Kim et al., Eur. Phys. J. Special Topics 189, 135 (2010)] and a glass-glass transition. We compare our results to those of Krakoviack [Phys. Rev. E 75, 031503 (2007)] and Lang et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 125701 (2010)].

The crystal structure of a beta-prism II (BP2) fold lectin from Remusatia vivipara, a plant of traditional medicinal value, has been determined at a resolution of 2.4 A. This lectin (RVL, Remusatia vivipara lectin) is a dimer with each protomer having two distinct BP2 domains without a linker between them. It belongs to the ``monocot mannose-binding'' lectin family, which consists of proteins of high sequence and structural similarity. Though the overall tertiary structure is similar to that of lectins from snowdrop bulbs and garlic, crucial differences in the mannose-binding regions and oligomerization were observed. Unlike most of the other structurally known proteins in this family, only one of the three carbohydrate recognition sites (CRSs) per BP2 domain is found to be conserved. RVL does not recognize simple mannose moieties. RVL binds to only N-linked complex glycans like those present on the gp120 envelope glycoprotein of HIV and mannosylated blood proteins like fetuin, but not to simple mannose moieties. The molecular basis for these features and their possible functional implications to understand the different levels of carbohydrate affinities in this structural family have been investigated through structure analysis, modeling and binding studies. Apart from being the first structure of a lectin to be reported from the Araceae/Arum family, this protein also displays a novel mode of oligomerization among BP2 lectins.

Abstract | Non-crystalline or glassy semiconductors are of great research interest for the fabrication of large area electronic systems such as displays and image sensors. Good uniformity over large areas, low temperature fabrication and the promise of low cost electronics on large area mechanically flexible and rigid substrates are some attractive features of these technologies. The article focusses on amorphous hydrogenated silicon thin film transistors, and reviews the problems, solutions and applications of these devices.

Pathogen encoded peptidases are known to be important during infection; however, their roles in modulating host responses in immunocompromised individuals are not well studied. The roles of S. typhimurium (WT) encoded Peptidase N (PepN), a major aminopeptidase and sole M1 family member, was studied in mice lacking Interferon-γ (IFNγ), a cytokine important for immunity. S. typhimurium lacking pepN (ΔpepN) displays enhanced colony forming units (CFU) compared to WT in peripheral organs during systemic infection in C57BL/6 mice. However, Ifnγ(-/-) mice show higher CFU compared to C57BL/6 mice, resulting in lower fold differences between WT and ΔpepN. Concomitantly, reintroduction of pepN in ΔpepN (ΔpepN/pepN) reduces CFU, demonstrating pepN-dependence. Interestingly, expression of a catalytically inactive PepN (ΔpepN/E298A) also lowers CFU, demonstrating that the decrease in CFU is independent of the catalytic activity of PepN. In addition, three distinct differences are observed between infection of C57BL/6 and Ifnγ(-/-) mice: First, serum amounts of TNFα and IL1β post infection are significantly lower in Ifnγ(-/-) mice. Second, histological analysis of C57BL/6 mice reveals that damage in spleen and liver upon infection with WT or ΔpepN is greater compared to ΔpepN/pepN or ΔpepN/E298A. On the other hand, Ifnγ(-/-) mice are highly susceptible to organ damage by all strains of S. typhimurium used in this study. Finally, greater survival of C57BL/6, but not Ifnγ(-/-) mice, is observed upon infection with ΔpepN/pepN or ΔpepN/E298A. Overall, the roles of the host encoded IFNγ during infection with S. typhimurium strains with varying degrees of virulence are highlighted.

Lanthanide(III) complexes [Ln(pyphen)(acac)(2)(NO3)] (1, 2), [Ln(pydppz)(acac)(2)(NO3)] (3, 4) and [La(pydppz)(anacac)(2)(NO3)] (5), where Ln is La(III) (in 1, 3, 5) and Gd(III) (in 2, 4), pyphen is 6-(2-pyridyl)-1,10-phenanthroline, pydppz is 6-(2-pyridyl)-dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c] phenazine, anacac is anthracenylacetylacetonate and acac is acetylacetonate, were prepared, characterized and their DNA photocleavage activity and photocytotoxicity studied. The crystal structure of complex 2 displays a GdO6N3 coordination. The pydppz complexes 3-5 show an electronic spectral band at similar to 390 nm in DMF. The La(III) complexes are diamagnetic, while the Gd(III) complexes are paramagnetic with seven unpaired electrons. The molar conductivity data suggest 1 : 1 electrolytic nature of the complexes in aqueous DMF. They are avid binders to calf thymus DNA giving K-b in the range of 5.4 10(4)-1.2 x 10(6) M-1. Complexes 3-5 efficiently cleave supercoiled DNA to its nicked circular form in UV-A light of 365 nm via formation of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) and hydroxyl radical (HO center dot) species. Complexes 3-5 also exhibit significant photocytotoxic effect in HeLa cancer cells giving respective IC50 value of 0.16(+/- 0.01), 0.15(+/- 0.01) and 0.26 +/-(0.02) mu M in UV-A light of 365 nm, while they are less toxic in dark with an IC50 value of >3 mu M. The presence of an additional pyridyl group makes the pydppz complexes more photocytotoxic than their dppz analogues. FACS analysis of the HeLa cells treated with complex 4 shows apoptosis as the major pathway of cell death. Nuclear localization of complex 5 having an anthracenyl moiety as a fluorophore is evidenced from the confocal microscopic studies.

The study presents an analysis aimed at choosing between off-grid solar photovoltaic, biomass gasifier based power generation and conventional grid extension for remote village electrification. The model provides a relation between renewable energy systems and the economical distance limit (EDL) from the existing grid point, based on life cycle cost (LCC) analysis, where the LCC of energy for renewable energy systems and grid extension will match. The LCC of energy feed to the village is arrived at by considering grid availability and operating hours of the renewable energy systems. The EDL for the biomass gasifier system of 25 kW capacities is 10.5 km with 6 h of daily operation and grid availability. However, the EDL for a similar 25 kW capacity photovoltaic system is 35 km for the same number of hours of operation and grid availability. The analysis shows that for villages having low load demand situated far away from the existing grid line, biomass gasification based systems are more cost competitive than photovoltaic systems or even compared to grid extension. Oxidovanadium(IV) complexes VO(pyphen)(L)]Cl2 (1, 2) and VO(pydppz)(L)]Cl2 (3, 4), where L is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1 and 3) and dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 2 and 4) are prepared and characterized. The crystal structure of VO(pyphen)(phen)](ClO4)2 (1a) shows a six-coordinate VN5O geometry with a VO2+ moiety in which the polypyridyl ligand binds in a meridional fashion and the phen ligand displays a chelating binding mode with an N-donor site trans to the oxidovanadyl group. The complexes show a dd band within 720-750 nm in DMF. The one-electron paramagnetic complexes are 1:2 electrolytes in DMF. The complexes exhibit an irreversible VIV/VIII redox response near -0.85 V vs. SCE in DMF/0.1 M TBAP. The complexes bind to calf thymus (ct) DNA giving Kb values within 7.5 x 104 to 1.1 x 106 M1. The complexes show poor chemical nuclease activity in the dark and exhibit significant DNA-photocleaving activity in near-IR light of 705 and 785 nm forming .OH radicals. Complexes 2-4 show remarkable photocytotoxicity in HeLa cancer cells. FACS analysis of the HeLa cells treated with complex 4 shows cell death as highlighted by the sub G1 peak. Propidium iodide staining data indicate apoptosis as the primary mode of cell death.

Of all tRNAs, initiator tRNA is unique in its ability to start protein synthesis by directly binding the ribosomal P-site. This ability is believed to derive from the almost universal presence of three consecutive G-C base (3G-C) pairs in the anticodon stem of initiator tRNA. Consistent with the hypothesis, a plasmid-borne initiator tRNA with one, two, or all 3G-C pairs mutated displays negligible initiation activity when tested in a WT Escherichia coli cell. Given this, the occurrence of unconventional initiator tRNAs lacking the 3G-C pairs, as in some species of Mycoplasma and Rhizobium, is puzzling. We resolve the puzzle by showing that the poor activity of unconventional initiator tRNAs in E. coli is because of competition from a large pool of the endogenous WT initiator tRNA (possessing the 3G-C pairs). We show that E. coli can be sustained on an initiator tRNA lacking the first and third G-C pairs; thereby reducing the 3G-C rule to a mere middle G-C requirement. Two general inferences following from our findings, that the activity of a mutant gene product may depend on its abundance in the cell relative to that of the WT, and that promiscuous initiation with elongator tRNAs has the potential to enhance phenotypic diversity without affecting genomic integrity, have been discussed.

This paper is a review prepared for the second Marseille Colloquium on the mechanics of turbulence, held in 2011, 50 years after the first. The review covers recent developments in our understanding of the large-scale dynamics of cumulus cloud flows and of the atmospheric boundary layer in the low-wind convective regime that is often encountered in the tropics. It has recently been shown that a variety of cumulus cloud forms and life cycles can be experimentally realized in the laboratory, with the transient diabatic plume taken as the flow model for a cumulus cloud. The plume is subjected to diabatic heating scaled to be dynamically similar to heat release from phase changes in clouds. The experiments are complemented by exact numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq equations for plumes with scaled off-source heating. The results show that the Taylor entrainment coefficient first increases with heating, reaches a positive maximum and then drops rapidly to zero or even negative values. This reduction in entrainment is a consequence of structural changes in the flow, smoothing out the convoluted boundaries in the non-diabatic plume, including the tongues engulfing the ambient flow. This is accompanied by a greater degree of mixedness in the core flow because of lower dilution by the ambient fluid. The cloud forms generated depend strongly on the history of the diabatic heating profile in the vertical direction. The striking effects of heating on the flow are attributable to the operation of the baroclinic torque due to the temperature field. The mean baroclinic torque is shown to peak around a quasi-cylindrical sheet situated midway between the axis of the flow and the edges. This torque is shear-enhancing and folds down the engulfment tongues. The increase in mixedness can be traced to an explosive growth in the enstrophy, triggered by a strong fluctuating baroclinic torque that acts as a source, especially at the higher wave numbers, thus enhancing the mixedness. In convective boundary layers field measurements show that, under conditions prevailing in the tropics, the eddy fluxes of momentum and energy do not follow the Monin-Obukhov similarity. Instead, the eddy momentum flux is found to be linear in the wind speed at low winds; and the eddy heat flux is, to a first approximation, governed by free convection laws, with wind acting as a small perturbation on a regime of free convection. A new boundary layer code, based on heat flux scaling rather than wall-stress scaling, shows promising improvements in predictive skills of a general circulation model.

The design and synthesis of an intensely blue rhodium(III) complex 3]+ of a new N,N-donor ligand, 8-(quinolin-8-ylamino)pyrido2,1-c]1,2,4]benzotriazin-11-ium, 2]+, which contains a planar pendant triazinium arm, is described. Structural characterization for 3]+ was carried out by using various spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The organometallic rhodium(III) compound shows a ligand-based reversible reduction at 0.65 V. The electrochemically reduced compound displays a single-line EPR spectrum that signifies the formation of ligand-based free radicals. Compound 3]+ shows a binding propensity to calf thymus DNA to give a Kapp value of 6.05X105 M1. The parent triazinium salt, pyrido2,1-c]1,2,4]benzotriazin-11-ium 1]+ and the ligand salt 2]+ exhibit photoinduced cleavage of DNA in UV-A light, whereas the reference Rh complex 3]+ photocleaves DNA with red light (647.1 nm). The compounds show photonuclease activities under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Mechanistic investigations under aerobic conditions with several inhibitors indicate the formation of hydroxyl radicals by means of a photoredox pathway. Under anaerobic conditions, it is believed that a photoinduced oxidation of DNA mechanism is operative. Compound 3]+ exhibits photocytotoxicity in HeLa cervical cancer cells to give IC50 values of (12+/-0.9) mu M in UV-A light at 365 nm and (31.4+/-1.1) mu M in the dark.

In this communication, we report the synthesis and characterisation of a new luminescent liquid crystalline material, 4,6-bis (4-butoxyphenyl)-2-methoxynicotinonitrile (3). We have confirmed its structure by Fourier transform infrared and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, elemental analysis and X-ray single crystal diffraction studies. The newly synthesised compound crystallises in a monoclinic system with the space group C2/c and its cell parameters are found to be a?=?25.181(4) angstrom, b?=?15.651(4)angstrom, c?=?12.703(19) angstrom, V?=?4880.4 (16) angstrom, Z?=?8. The results indicate that the presence of weak CH center dot center dot center dot O and CH center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonding as short-range intermolecular interactions are responsible for the formation of its crystal assembly. The measured torsion angle shows the existence of a distorted structure for the molecule wherein 4-butoxyphenylene ring substituent at the fourth position of the central pyridine ring forms a torsion angle chiC(4), C(3), C(10), C(19)] of 40.55 degrees. Its liquid crystalline behaviour was investigated with the aid of polarised optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The study reveals that the compound displays a broad nematic phase in the range of 78112 degrees C. Further, solution phase optical studies indicate that it is a blue light emitter in different non-polar and polar organic solvents at a concentration of 10-5M.

Peptidase N (PepN), the sole M1 family member in Escherichia coli, displays broad substrate specificity and modulates stress responses: it lowers resistance to sodium salicylate (NaSal)-induced stress but is required during nutritional downshift and high temperature (NDHT) stress. The expression of PepN does not significantly change during different growth phases in LB or NaSal-induced stress; however, PepN amounts are lower during NDHT stress. To gain mechanistic insights on the roles of catalytic activity of PepN in modulating these two stress responses, alanine mutants of PepN replacing E264 (GAMEN motif) and E298 (HEXXH motif) were generated. There are no major structural changes between purified wild type (WT) and mutant proteins, which are catalytically inactive. Importantly, growth profiles of Delta pepN upon expression of WT or mutant proteins demonstrated the importance of catalytic activity during NDHT but not NaSal-induced stress. Further fluorescamine reactivity studies demonstrated that the catalytic activity of PepN is required to generate higher intracellular amounts of free N-terminal amino acids; consequently, the lower growth of Delta pepN during NDHT stress increases with high amounts of casamino acids. Together, this study sheds insights on the expression and functional roles of the catalytic activity of PepN during adaptation to NDHT stress. (C) 2012 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Li+-doped Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphors have been studied as potential red phosphors for application to field emission displays. The Li+-doped and undoped Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphors were synthesized by low temperature solution combustion method. The enhanced luminescence was regarded as the result of the creation of oxygen vacancies due to the Gd3+ sites occupied by Li+ ions, the alteration of the crystal field surrounding the activator Eu3+ ions owing to the incorporation of Li+ into interstial sites. The result in a remarkable increase on photoluminescence and the strong emission was observed at 612 nm by a factor of 4.1 in comparison with that of undoped sample.
