Aggregation behavior of two amphiphilic D-pi -A molecules bearing barbituric acid as both recogniton group and electron-drawing substituent, 5-(4-dodecyl oxybenzylidene)-(1H, 3H)-2,4,6-pyrimidine trione (PB12) and 5-(4-N,N-didodecyl aminobenzylidene)-(1H,3H)-2,4,6-pyrimidine trione (AB(12)) was studied by UV-visible, fluorescence, and surface voltaic spectroscopies (SPS). The experimental results indicate that PB12 tends to form J-aggregate and AB(12) tends to form H-aggregate under increasing concentration. An intramolecular twisted charge transfer (TICT) emission around 500 nm is observed when J-aggregate is formed between PB12 molecules, and an excimer emission around 600 nm is observed when H-aggregate is formed between AB(12) molecules.

The banded textures in the films of a thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) containing a lateral chloro group have been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy(TEM), electron diffraction(ED) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The crystallization-induced Landed texture without external shear can be formed when the thin films were annealed at the temperature range(320-330 degrees C) of the liquid crystalline state from the melt, The results show that the banded regions have high orientation of single crystal based on the orthorhombic packing and the growing direction of the Lands is along the b axis of the crystals, This kind of single crystal-like bands is due to the different orientation of the packing molecular chains, The molecular chains of the dark bands in the bright field electron micrograph are perpendicular to the film plane, while the ones of the bright Lands are tilt along the b axis with the tilt angle upto +/-20 degrees.

Six new compounds, alpha,beta-KaHb[GeW(9)M(3)(H2O)(3)O-37]. xH(2)O(M = Al, Ga, In; a + b = 7) and alpha-K9H5[Ge2W18Ga6(H2O)(3)O-74]. 20H(2)O, were synthesized from the lacunary precursors a and beta-GeW9O3410- and characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopy and electrochemistry. Tungsten-183 NMR spectra of the title complexes consist of two lines with intensity ratio 2:1 as expected for trisubstituted heteropoly anions. The intensity ratio of alpha-Ga compound is 1:2, which is different from others(a:1). With the help of FAB mass spectrum, we concluded that it is a dimer with D-3h structure in aqueous, and the others exist by monomers with C-3v structures.

The nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity in the haemocytes of shrimps Fenneropenaeus chinensis (Osbeck) and Marsupenaeus japonicus (Bate) was Studied after white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) infection to determine its characteristics in response to virus infection. First, the NOS activity in haemocytes of shrimps was determined by the means of NBT reduction and changes in cell conformation. And the variations of NOS activity in shrimps after challenge with WSSV intramuscularly were evaluated through the analysis Of L-citrulline and total nitrite/nitrate (both as NO derivates) concentrations. The result showed that NOS activity in the haemocytes of F chinensis increased slightly from 0 to 12 h postchallenge, indicated by the variations Of L-Citrulline (from 11.15 +/- 0.10 to 12.08 +/- 0.64 mu M) and total nitrite/nitrate concentrations (from 10.45 +/- 0.65 to 12.67 +/- 0.52 mu M). Then it decreased sharply till the end of the experiment (84 h postchallenge), the concentrations Of L-Citrulline and total nitrite/nitrate at 84 It were 1.58 +/- 0.24 and 2.69 +/- 0.70 mu M, respectively. The LPS-stimulated NOS activity kept constant during the experiment. However, in M. japonicus, the NOS activity kept increasing during the first 72 It postchallenge, the concentrations Of L-Citrulline and total nitrite/nitrate increased from 7.82 +/- 0.77 at 0 h to 10.79 +/- 0.50 mu M at 72 h, and from 8.98 +/- 0.43 at 0 h to 11.20 +/- 0.37 mu M at 72 h, respectively. Then it decreased till the end of the experiment (216 h postchallenge), and the concentrations of L-Citrulline and total nitrite/nitrate at 216 h were 5.66 +/- 0.27 and 4.68 +/- 0.16 mu M, respectively. More importantly, an apparent increase of I-PS-stimulated NOS activity was observed in M japonicus at 48 h postchallenge, which was about 4 times higher than that in the control group of health shrimps. In correspondence with the difference of NOS activity between the two species of shrimps, the Cumulative mortalities of the shrimps were also different. All shrimps of F. chinensis in the mortality experiment died in 66 h, much more quickly than M. japonicus, Whose accumulative mortality reached 100% after 240 h. Data here reported let us hypothesize that NOS activity in the haemocytes of shrimps F chinensis and M. japonicus responses to WSSV infection differently, and this might be one of the reasons for the different susceptibility of F chinensis and M. japonicus to WSSV infection. Large group sizes have been hypothesized to decrease predation risk and increase food competition. We investigated group size effects on vigilance and foraging behaviour during the migratory period in female Tibetan antelope Pantholops hodgsoni, in the Kekexili Nature Reserve of Qinghai Province, China. During June to August, adult female antelope and yearling females gather in large migratory groups and cross the Qinghai-Tibet highway to calving grounds within the Nature Reserve and return to Qumalai county after calving. Large groups of antelope aggregate in the migratory corridor where they compete for limited food resources and attract the attention of mammalian and avian predators and scavengers. We restricted our sampling to groups of less than 30 antelopes and thus limit our inference accordingly. Focal-animal sampling was used to record the behaviour of the free-ranging antelope except for those with lambs. Tibetan antelope spent more time foraging in larger groups but frequency of foraging bouts was not affected by group size. Conversely, the time spent vigilant and frequency of vigilance bouts decreased with increased group size. We suggest that these results are best explained by competition for food and risk of predation. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The complete 1140 bp mitochondial cytochrome b sequences were obtained from 39 individuals representing five species of all four genera of highly specialized schizothoracine fishes distributed in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. Sequence variation of the cytochrome b gene was surveyed among the 39 individuals as well as three primitive schizothoracines and one outgroup. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that the group assignment based on 1140 bp of the cytochrome b sequence is obviously; different from previous assignments, and the highly specialized schizothoracine fishes (Schizopygopsis pylzovi, Gymnocypris przewalskii, G. eckloni, Chuanchia lablosa, and Platypharodon extremus) form a monophyletic group that is sister to the clade formed by the primitive schizothoracine fishes (Schizothorax prenanti, S. pseudaksaiensis, and S. argentatus). The haplotypes of Schizopygopsis pylzovi and G. przewalskii were paraphyletic based on cytochrome b data, which most likely reflected incomplete sorting of mitochondrial DNA lineages. The diploid chromosome numbers of Schizofhoracinae were considered in phylogenetic analysis and provided a clear pattern of relationships. Molecular dating estimated for highly specialized schizothoracine fishes suggested that the highly specialized schizothoracine fishes diverged in the late Miocene Pliocene to Pleistocene (4.5x10(4)-4.05x10(6) Years BP). The relationship between the cladogenesis of highly specialized schizothoracine fishes and geographical events of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau is discussed.

With the combined use of glycosyl trichloroacetimidates and thioglycosides, a group of natural diosgenyl saponins (1-6) are efficiently synthesized, in either a stepwise or a 'one-pot' manner. The trichloroacetimidate is employed as an efficient temporary hydroxy protecting group in glycosylation with the glycosyl trichloroacetimidate. The intermolecular alkylthio-group transfer is demonstrated to be a common side-reaction during glycosylation with thioglycosides.

Three chiral Mn(salen) complexes were immobilized into different mesoporous material via phenoxy group by a simplified method and they show high activity and enantioselectivity for asymmetric epoxidation of various substituted unfunctional olefins. The heterogeneous Mn(salen) catalysts show comparable ee values for asymmetric epoxidation of styrene and 6-cyano-2,2-dimethylchromene and much higher ee values for epoxidation of a-methylstyrene (heterogeneous 79.7% ee versus homogeneous 26.4% ee) and cis-beta-methylstyrene (heterogeneous 94.9% ee versus homogeneous 25.3% ee for cis-epoxide) than the homogeneous catalysts. These heterogeneous catalysts also remarkably alter the cis/trans ratio of epoxides for asymmetric epoxidation of cis-beta-methylstyrene (heterogeneous 21 versus homogeneous 0.38). The axial tether group does not make a big effect on ee values and the increase in ee value and change in cis/trans ratio are mainly attributed to the axial immobilization mode and the support effect of heterogeneous catalysts. The catalysts keep constant ee values for the recycle tests of eight times for asymmetric epoxidation of a-methylstyrene. And several possibilities were proposed to elucidate the difference in ee values of heterogeneous catalysts from homogeneous catalysts. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Our group has demonstrated that inflammatory diseases such as type 2 diabetes (DM), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and periodontal disease (PD) are associated with altered B cell function that may contribute to disease pathogenesis. B cells were found to be highly activated with characteristics of inflammatory cells. Obesity is a pre-disease state for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes and is considered a state of chronic inflammation. Therefore, we sought to better characterize B cell function and phenotype in obese patients. We demonstrate that (Toll-like receptor) TLR4 and CD36 expression by B cells is elevated in obese subjects, suggesting increased sensing of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and other TLR ligands. These ligands may be of microbial, from translocation from a leaky gut, or host origin. To better assess microbial ligand burden and host response in the bloodstream, we measured LPS binding protein (LBP), bacterial/permeability increasing protein (BPI), and high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1). Thus far, our data demonstrate an increase in LBP in DM and obesity indicating increased responses to TLR ligands in the blood. Interestingly, B cells responded to certain types of LPS by phosphorylating extracellular-signal-regulated kinases (ERK) 1/2. A better understanding of the immunological state of obesity and the microbial and endogenous TLR ligands that may be activating B cells will help identify novel therapeutics to reduce the risk of more dangerous conditions, such as cardiovascular disease.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological disorder affecting nearly 15% of the general population. Ironically, RLS can be described as the most common condition one has never heard of. It is usually characterised by uncomfortable, unpleasant sensations in the lower limbs inducing an uncontrollable desire to move the legs. RLS exhibits a circadian pattern with symptoms present predominantly in the evening or at night, thus leading to sleep disruption and daytime somnolence. RLS is generally classified into primary (idiopathic) and secondary (symptomatic) forms. Primary RLS includes sporadic and familial cases of which the age of onset is usually less than 45 years and progresses slowly with a female to male ratio of 2:1. Secondary forms often occur as a complication of another health condition, such as iron deficiency or thyroid dysfunction. The age of onset is usually over 45 years, with an equal male to female ratio and more rapid progression. Ekbom described the familial component of the disorder in 1945 and since then many studies have been published on the familial forms of the disorder. Molecular genetic studies have so far identified ten loci (5q, 12q, 14p, 9p, 20p, 16p, 19p, 4q, 17p). No specific gene within these loci has been identified thus far. Association mapping has highlighted a further five areas of interest. RLS6 has been found to be associated with SNPs in the BTBD9 gene. Four other variants were found within intronic and intergenic regions of MEIS1, MAP2K5/LBXCOR1, PTPRD and NOS1. The pathophysiology of RLS is complex and remains to be fully elucidated. Conditions associated with secondary RLS, such as pregnancy or end-stage renal disease, are characterised by iron deficiency, which suggests that disturbed iron homeostasis plays a role. Dopaminergic dysfunction in subcortical systems also appears to play a central role. An ongoing study within the Department of Pathology (University College Cork) is investigating the genetic characteristics of RLS in Irish families. A three generation RLS pedigree RLS3002 consisting of 11 affected and 7 unaffected living family members was recruited. The family had been examined for four of the known loci (5q, 12q, 14p and 9p) (Abdulrahim 2008). The aim of this study was to continue examining this Irish RLS pedigree for possible linkage to the previously described loci and associated regions. Using informative microsatellite markers linkage was excluded to the loci on 5q, 12q, 14p, 9p, 20p, 16p, 19p, 4q, 17p and also within the regions reported to be associated with RLS. This suggested the presence of a new unidentified locus. A genome-wide scan was performed using two microsatellite marker screening sets (Research Genetics Inc. Mapping set and the Applied Biosystems Linkage mapping set version 2.5). Linkage analysis was conducted under an autosomal dominant model with a penetrance of 95% and an allele frequency of 0.01. A maximum LOD score of 3.59 at θ=0.00 for marker D19S878 indicated significant linkage on chromosome 19p. Haplotype analysis defined a genetic region of 6.57 cM on chromosome 19p13.3, corresponding to 2.5 Mb. There are approximately 100 genes annotated within the critical region. Sequencing of two candidate genes, KLF16 and GAMT, selected on the assumed pathophysiology of RLS, did not identify any sequence variant. This study provides evidence of a novel RLS locus in an Irish pedigree, thus supporting the picture of RLS as a genetically heterogeneous trait.

The influence of communication technology on group decision-making has been examined in many studies. But the findings are inconsistent. Some studies showed a positive effect on decision quality, other studies have shown that communication technology makes the decision even worse. One possible explanation for these different findings could be the use of different Group Decision Support Systems (GDSS) in these studies, with some GDSS better fitting to the given task than others and with different sets of functions. This paper outlines an approach with an information system solely designed to examine the effect of (1) anonymity, (2) voting and (3) blind picking on decision quality, discussion quality and perceived quality of information.
