The R-matrix method has proved to be a remarkably stable, robust and efficient technique for solving the close-coupling equations that arise in electron and photon collisions with atoms, ions and molecules. During the last thirty-four years a series of related R-matrix program packages have been published periodically in CPC. These packages are primarily concerned with low-energy scattering where the incident energy is insufficient to ionize the target. In this paper we describe previous term2DRMP,next term a suite of two-dimensional R-matrix propagation programs aimed at creating virtual experiments on high performance and grid architectures to enable the study of electron scattering from H-like atoms and ions at intermediate energies.

To complete the 2DRMP package an asymptotic program, such as FARM, is needed. The original version of FARM is designed to construct the physical R-matrix, R, from surface amplitudes contained in the H-file. However, in 2DRMP, R has already been constructed for each scattering energy during propagation. Therefore, this modified version of FARM, known as as FARM_2DRMP, has been developed solely for use with 2DRMP.

We consider the class of crossed products of noetherian domains with universal enveloping algebras of Lie algebras. For algebras from this class we give a sufficient condition for the existence of projective non-free modules. This class includes Weyl algebras and universal envelopings of Lie algebras, for which this question, known as noncommutative Serre's problem, was extensively studied before. It turns out that the method of lifting of non-trivial stably free modules from simple Ore extensions can be applied to crossed products after an appropriate choice of filtration. The motivating examples of crossed products are provided by the class of RIT algebras, originating in non-equilibrium physics.

An H-file is used to convey information from the inner-region to the outer-region in R-matrix computations. HBrowse is a workstation tool for displaying a graphical abstraction of a local or remote R-matrix H-file. While it is published as a stand-alone tool for post-processing the output from R-matrix inner-region computations it also forms part of the Graphical R-matrix Atomic Collision Environment (GRACE), HBrowse is written in C and OSF/Motif for the UNIX operating system. In dielectronic recombination of hydrogenlike ions an intermediate doubly excited heliumlike ion is formed. Since the K shell is empty, both excited electrons can decay sequentially to the ground state. In this paper we analyze the x-ray radiation emitted from doubly and singly excited heliumlike titanium ions produced inside the Tokyo electron beam ion trap. Theoretical population densities of the singly excited states after the first transition and the transition probabilities of these states into the ground state were also calculated. This allowed theoretical branching ratios to be determined for each manifold. These branching ratios are compared to the experimentally obtained x-ray distribution by fitting across the relevant peak using a convolution of the theoretically obtained resonance strengths and energies. By taking into account 2E1 transitions which are not observed in the experiment, the measured and calculated ratios agree well. This method provides a valuable insight into the transition dynamics of excited highly charged ions.

The electron beam ion trap (EBIT) in Tokyo was constructed about 10 years after the first EBIT at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory was built, and has been being stably operated since then. In this paper, we present recent experimental activities at the Tokyo EBIT. In particular, experiments utilizing slow, very highly charged ion beams extracted from the EBIT are reported.

Self-affine dehydrated colloidal deposits on fresh mica surfaces of the synthetic layered silicate 2:1 smectite clay laponite have been studied by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM images of these prepared assemblies of sol and gel aggregates have been analyzed both by means of standard AFM Fourier software and a wavelet method. The deposited surfaces show a persistence to antipersistent crossover with a clay concentration dependent crossover length. It is concluded that the crossover length is associated with aggregate size, and further that the persistent roughness at small length scales signals near compact clusters of fractal dimension three, whereas the antipersistent roughness at large length scales signals a sedimentation process.

Recent advances in the development of 2D microstrip detectors open up new possibilities for hard x-ray spectroscopy, in particular for polarization studies. These detectors make ideal Compton polarimeters, which enable us to study precisely the polarization of hard x-rays. Here, we present recent results from measurements of Radiative Electron Capture into the K-shell of highly-charged uranium ions. The experiments were performed with a novel 2D Si(Li) Compton polarimeter at the Experimental Storage Ring at GSI. Stored and cooled beams of U91+ and U92+ ions, with kinetic energies of 43 MeV/u and 96 MeV/u respectively, were crossed with a hydrogen gasjet. The preliminary data analysis shows x-rays from the K-REC process, emitted perpendicularly to the ion beam, to be strongly linearly polarized.
