We construct the Drinfeld twists (or factorizing F-matrices) of the supersymmetric model associated with quantum superalgebra U-q(gl(m vertical bar n)), and obtain the completely symmetric representations of the creation operators of the model in the F-basis provided by the F-matrix. As an application of our general results, we present the explicit expressions of the Bethe vectors in the F-basis for the U-q(gl(2 vertical bar 1))-model (the quantum t-J model).

The channelled spectrum of an optical beam generated by a laser diode operated below threshold after traversing microscope glass plates is spectrally analysed using a grating and a CCD linear array. The experiment has the following goals: to display the resulting channelled spectrum, to familiarize students with an important topic in metrology and to illustrate some interesting topics from spectroscopy using a CCD array as a spectrometer.

New information on possible resource value of sea floor manganese nodule deposits in the eastern north Pacific has been obtained by a study of records and collections of the 1972 Sea Scope Expedition. Nodule abundance (percent of sea floor covered) varies greatly, according to photographs from eight stations and data from other sources. All estimates considered reliable are plotted on a map of the region. Similar maps show the average content of Ni, Cu, Mn and Co at 89 stations from which three or more nodules were analyzed. Variations in nodule metal content at each station are shown graphically in an appendix, where data on nodule sizes are also given. Results of new analyses of 420 nodules from 93 stations for mn, fe, ni, cu, CO, and zn are listed in another appendix. Relatively high Ni + Cu content is restricted chiefly to four groups of stations in the equatorial region, where group averages are 1.86, 1.99, 2.47, and 2.55 weight-percent. We report new measurements of the double-polarized photodisintegration of 3He at an incident photon energy of 16.5 MeV, carried out at the High Intensity γ-ray Source (HIγS) facility located at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The spin-dependent double-differential cross sections and the contribution from the three-body channel to the Gerasimov–Drell–Hearn (GDH) integrand were extracted and compared with the state-of-the-art three-body calculations. The calculations, which include the Coulomb interaction and are in good agreement with the results of previous measurements at 12.8 and 14.7 MeV, deviate from the new cross section results at 16.5 MeV. The GDH integrand was found to be about one standard deviation larger than the maximum value predicted by the theories.

Digital rock physics combines modern imaging with advanced numerical simulations to analyze the physical properties of rocks -- In this paper we suggest a special segmentation procedure which is applied to a carbonate rock from Switzerland -- Starting point is a CTscan of a specimen of Hauptmuschelkalk -- The first step applied to the raw image data is a nonlocal mean filter -- We then apply different thresholds to identify pores and solid phases -- Because we are aware of a nonneglectable amount of unresolved microporosity we also define intermediate phases -- Based on this segmentation determine porositydependent values for the pwave velocity and for the permeability -- The porosity measured in the laboratory is then used to compare our numerical data with experimental data -- We observe a good agreement -- Future work includes an analytic validation to the numerical results of the pwave velocity upper bound, employing different filters for the image segmentation and using data with higher resolution

Deep Learning architectures give brilliant results in a large variety of fields, but a comprehensive theoretical description of their inner functioning is still lacking. In this work, we try to understand the behavior of neural networks by modelling in the frameworks of Thermodynamics and Condensed Matter Physics. We approach neural networks as in a real laboratory and we measure the frequency spectrum and the entropy of the weights of the trained model. The stochasticity of the training occupies a central role in the dynamics of the weights and makes it difficult to assimilate neural networks to simple physical systems. However, the analogy with Thermodynamics and the introduction of a well defined temperature leads us to an interesting result: if we eliminate from a CNN the "hottest" filters, the performance of the model remains the same, whereas, if we eliminate the "coldest" ones, the performance gets drastically worst. This result could be exploited in the realization of a training loop which eliminates the filters that do not contribute to loss reduction. In this way, the computational cost of the training will be lightened and more importantly this would be done by following a physical model. In any case, beside important practical applications, our analysis proves that a new and improved modeling of Deep Learning systems can pave the way to new and more efficient algorithms.

The discovery of the neutrino mass is a direct evidence of new physics. Several questions arise from this observation, regarding the mechanism originating the neutrino masses and their hierarchy, the violation of lepton number conservation and the generation of the baryon asymmetry. These questions can be addressed by the experimental search for neutrinoless double beta (0\nu\beta\beta) decay, a nuclear decay consisting of two simultaneous beta emissions without the emission of two antineutrinos. 0\nu\beta\beta decay is possible only if neutrinos are identical to antineutrinos, namely if they are Majorana particles. Several experiments are searching for 0\nu\beta\beta decay. Among these, CUORE is employing 130Te embedded in TeO_2 bolometric crystals. It needs to have an accurate understanding of the background contribution in the energy region around the Q-value of 130Te. One of the main contributions is given by particles from the decay chains of contaminating nuclei (232Th, 235-238U) present in the active crystals or in the support structure. This thesis uses the 1 ton yr CUORE data to study these contamination by looking for events belonging to sub-chains of the Th and U decay chains and reconstructing their energy and time difference distributions in a delayed coincidence analysis. These results in combination with studies on the simulated data are then used to evaluate the contaminations. This is the first time this analysis is applied to the CUORE data and this thesis highlights the feasibility of it while providing a starting point for further studies. A part of the obtained results agrees with ones from previous analysis, demonstrating that delayed coincidence searches might improve the understanding of the CUORE experiment background. This kind of delayed coincidence analysis can also be reused in the future once the, CUORE upgrade, CUPID data will be ready to be analyzed, with the aim of improving the sensitivity to the 0\nu\beta\beta decay of 100Mo.

In order to report the outcome of a patient who developed compartment syndrome after South American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus terrificus) envenomation, confirmed by subfascial pressure measurement and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A 63-year-old male was admitted 1 h after being bitten on the right elbow by a large snake, which was not brought for identification. Physical and laboratory features upon admission revealed two fang marks, local tense swelling, paresthesia, intense local pain, hypertension, coagulopathy, and CK = 1530 U/L (RV < 170 U/L). The case was initially treated with bothropic antivenom (80 mL, intravenously), with no improvement. Evolution within 13-14 h post-bite revealed generalized myalgia, muscle weakness, palpebral ptosis, and severe rhabdomyolysis (CK = 126,160 U/L) compatible with envenoming by C. d. terrificus. The patient was then treated with crotalic antivenom (200 mL, intravenously), fluid replacement, and urine alkalinization. Twenty-four-hour post-bite MRI showed marked muscular edema in the anterior compartment of the right forearm, with a high subfascial pressure (40 mmHg) being detected 1 h later. ELISA of a blood sample obtained upon admission, before antivenom infusion, revealed a high serum concentration of C. d. terrificus venom. No fasciotomy was performed and the patient was discharged seven days later without sequelae. Snakebite by C. d. terrificus with subfascial venom injection may lead to increased intracompartmental pressure.
