Oxygen and carbon isotope ratios in Eocene and Oligocene planktonic and benthic foraminifera have been investigated from Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Ocean locations. The major changes in Eocene-Oligocene benthic foraminiferal oxygen isotopes were enrichment of up to 1 per mil in 18O associated with the middle/late Eocene boundary and the Eocene/Oligocene boundary at locations which range from 1- to 4-km paleodepth. Although the synchronous Eocene-Oligocene 18O enrichment began in the latest Eocene, most of the change occurred in the earliest Oligocene. The earliest Oligocene enrichment in 18O is always larger in benthic foraminifera than in surface-dwelling planktonic foraminifera, a condition that indicates a combination of deep-water cooling and increased ice volume. Planktonic foraminiferal d18O does not increase across the middle/late Eocene boundary at our one site with the most complete record (Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 363, Walvis Ridge). This pattern suggests that benthic foraminiferal d18O increased 40 m.y. ago because of increased density of deep waters, probably as a result of cooling, although glaciation cannot be ruled out without more data. Stable isotope data are averaged for late Eocene and earliest Oligocene time intervals to evaluate paleoceanographic change. Average d18O of benthic foraminifera increased by 0.64 per mil from the late Eocene to the early Oligocene d18O maximum, whereas the average increase for planktonic foraminifera was 0.52 per mil. This similarity suggests that the Eocene/Oligocene boundary d18O increase was caused primarily by increased continental glaciation, coupled with deep sea cooling by as much as 2°C at some sites. Average d18O of surface-dwelling planktonic foraminifera from 14 upper Eocene and 17 lower Oligocene locations, when plotted versus paleo-latitude, reveals no change in the latitudinal d18O gradient. The Oligocene data are offset by ~0.45 per mil, also believed to reflect increased continental glaciation. At present, there are too few deep sea sequences from high latitude locations to resolve an increase in the oceanic temperature gradient from Eocene to Oligocene time using oxygen isotopes.

The sandstone petrology of Leg 66 samples provides insights into changes through time in the geology of the source regions along the Guerrero portion of the Middle America continental margin. This in turn constrains possible models of the evolution of the Middle America Trench (e.g., de Czerna, 1971; Malfait and Dinkleman, 1972; Karig, 1974). Primarily medium-grained sands and sandstones, representing the widest variety available of trench/trench slope settings and ages, were analyzed in both light and heavy mineral studies. Standard techniques were used as much as possible in order to compare results from other margins and from ancient rocks.

The onset of abundant ice-rafted debris (IRD) deposition in the Nordic Seas and subpolar North Atlantic Ocean 2.72 millions of years ago (Ma) is thought to record the Pliocene onset of major northern hemisphere glaciation (NHG) due to a synchronous advance of North American Laurentide, Scandinavian and Greenland ice-sheets to their marine calving margins during marine isotope stage (MIS) G6. Numerous marine and terrestrial records from the Nordic Seas region indicate that extensive ice sheets on Greenland and Scandinavia increased IRD inputs to these seas from 2.72 Ma. The timing of ice-sheet expansion on North America as tracked by IRD deposition in the subpolar North Atlantic Ocean, however, is less clear because both Europe and North America are potential sources for icebergs in this region. Moreover, cosmogenic-dating of terrestrial tills on North America indicate that the Laurentide Ice Sheet did not extend to ~39°N until 2.4 ±0.14 Ma, at least 180 ka after the onset of major IRD deposition at 2.72 Ma. To address this problem,we present the first detailed analysis of the geochemical provenance of individual sand-sized IRD deposited in the subpolar North Atlantic Ocean between MIS G6 and 100 (~2.72-2.52 Ma). IRD provenance is assessed using laser ablation lead (Pb) isotope analyses of single ice-rafted (>150 mm) feldspar grains. To track when an ice-rafting setting consistent with major NHG first occurred in the North Atlantic Ocean during the Pliocene intensification of NHG (iNHG), we investigate when the Pb-isotope composition (206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, 208Pb/204Pb) of feldspars deposited at DSDP Site 611 first resembles that determined for IRD deposited at this site during MIS 100, the oldest glacial for which there exists convincing evidence for widespread glaciation of North America. Whilst Quaternary-magnitude IRD fluxes exist at Site 611 during glacials from 2.72 Ma, we find that the provenance of this IRD is not constant. Instead, we find that the Pb isotope composition of IRD at our study site is not consistent with major NHG until MIS G2 (2.64 Ma). We hypothesise that IRD deposition in the North Atlantic Ocean prior to MIS G2 was dominated by iceberg calving from Greenland and Scandinavia. We further suggest that the grounding line of continental ice on Northeast America may not have extended onto the continental shelf and calved significant numbers of icebergs to the North Atlantic Ocean during glacials until 2.64 Ma.

At Site 493, DSDP Leg 66, dioritic basement was reached below lower Miocene (NN1 Zone, 22-24 Ma) terrigenous sediments. Petrographical, mineralogical (including microprobe analyses), and chemical features of the dioritic rocks reveal their magmatic affinity with the calc-alkaline series. Furthermore, their radiometric age (35.3 m.y.) links the basement to the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico and to mid-Tertiary volcanic arcs in Central America. The presence of Oligocene diorite 50 km from the trench axis confirms the truncation of the south Mexico margin, which we explain as the result of a 650 to 800 km left-lateral displacement of Central America relative to North America. Truncation must have occurred in the late Miocene, after the diorite intrusion and prior to the present subduction.

During Leg 67, the Middle-America Trench transect off Guatemala was drilled across the convergent margin of southern Mexico and Central America south of the Tehuantepec Ridge. The data of Leg 66, north of the Tehuantepec Ridge, and that of Leg 67 provided the opportunity to establish a continuous chronology of airborne volcanic ashes intercalated within the sediments (Aubouin et al., 1979; von Huene et al., 1980). Sites of both expeditions are favorably located for obtaining a good record of the explosive volcanicity of these areas, given the proximity of the volcanic sources and the position of the sites under the prevailing winds.

Mineral and chemical compositions, as well as conditions of formation of clay sediments in major structural elements of the Pacific Ocean floor with different ages are under consideration in the monograph. Depending on evolution of the region two ways of clay sediment formation are identified: terrigenous and authigenic. It is shown that terrigenous clay sediments predominate in marginal parts of the Pacific Ocean. Authigenic mineral formation occurring in the basal part of the sedimentary cover primarily results from removal of material from underlying basalts. This material is released during secondary alteration of the basalts due to their interaction with sea water, as well as with deep solutions.

The Sr, Rb, Ti, and Zr concentrations of 16 volcanic ash samples from Leg 19 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project were determined by X-ray fluorescence. The age of each ash sample had been established previously by faunal criteria and had been confirmed by fission-track dating. Variations in the trace-element concentrations through the past 8 m.y. are clearly seen. Seven of the ashes are older than 4 m.y., have low TiO2 contents, and have Sr concentrations of less than 200 ppm; they are thus similar to tholeiitic basalts of island arcs. Nine ashes are younger than 4 m.y. and are similar in trace-element content to andesite. Magmatic evolution of the Aleutian arc over the past 8 m.y. is clearly shown.

Leg 67 sample sediments are mainly composed of biogenic carbonate and biogenic siliceous materials. Apart from calcite, crystallized minerals are scarce; however, they are better represented in sites near the continent and in all Quaternary sediments. These minerals are: quartz, feldspars, smectite, and, rarely, chlorite, dolomite, and zeolite.

Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 66 drilled eight sites along a transect across the Middle America Trench off Mexico, including continental (Sites 493 and 489), oceanic (Site 487), and trench (Site 486) reference sites and four sites (490, 492, 491, 488) in the trench inner wall. Because of their location - close to volcanic sources and subject to prevailing winds and marine currents (N to S, NW to SE) - analysis of airborne ashes intercalated within the sediments at these sites provides a reliable record of explosive volcanism in the area. Intense onshore volcanic activity in Mexico during the Oligo-Miocene has been well documented by the andesites and ignimbrites of the Sierra Madre Occidental and Sierra Madre del Sur and in the Plio-Quaternary by the andesites and basalts from the Trans-Mexican Neovolcanic Belt and the eastern border of Baja California.

The nature of Re-platinum-group element (PGE; Pt, Pd, Ir, Os, Ru) transport in the marine environment was investigated by means of marine sediments at and across the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (KTB) at two hemipelagic sites in Europe and two pelagic sites in the North and South Pacific. A traverse across the KTB in the South Pacific pelagic clay core found elevated levels of Re, Pt, Ir, Os, and Ru, each of which is approximately symmetrically distributed over a distance of ~1.8 m across the KTB. The Re-PGE abundance patterns are fractionated from chondritic relative abundances: Ru, Pt, Pd, and Re contents are slightly subchondritic relative to Ir, and Os is depleted by ~95% relative to chondritic Ir proportions. A similar depletion in Os (~90%) was found in a sample of the pelagic KTB in the North Pacific, but it is enriched in Ru, Pt, Pd, and Re relative to Ir. The two hemipelagic KTB clays have near-chondritic abundance patterns. The ~1.8-m-wide Re-PGE peak in the pelagic South Pacific section cannot be reconciled with the fallout of a single impactor, indicating that postdepositional redistribution has occurred. The elemental profiles appear to fit diffusion profiles, although bioturbation could have also played a role. If diffusion had occurred over ~65 Ma, the effective diffusivities are ~10**?13 cm**2/s, much smaller than that of soluble cations in pore waters (~10**?6 cm**2/s). The coupling of Re and the PGEs during redistribution indicates that postdepositional processes did not significantly fractionate their relative abundances. If redistribution was caused by diffusion, then the effective diffusivities are the same. Fractionation of Os from Ir during the KTB interval must therefore have occurred during aqueous transport in the marine environment. Distinctly subchondritic Os/Ir ratios throughout the Cenozoic in the South Pacific core further suggest that fractionation of Os from Ir in the marine environment is a general process throughout geologic time because most of the inputs of Os and Ir into the ocean have Os/Ir ratios >/=1. Mass balance calculations show that Os and Re burial fluxes in pelagic sediments account for only a small fraction of the riverine Os (<10%) and Re (<0.1%) inputs into the oceans. In contrast, burial of Ir in pelagic sediments is similar to the riverine Ir input, indicating that pelagic sediments are a much larger repository for Ir than for Os and Re. If all of the missing Os and Re is assumed to reside in anoxic sediments in oceanic margins, the calculated burial fluxes in anoxic sediments are similar to observed burial fluxes. However, putting all of the missing Os and Re into estuarine sediments would require high concentrations to balance the riverine input and would also fail to explain the depletion of Os at pelagic KTB sites, where at most ~25% of the K-T impactor's Os could have passed through estuaries. If Os is preferentially sequestered in anoxic marine environments, it follows that the Os/Ir ratio of pelagic sediments should be sensitive to changes in the rates of anoxic sediment deposition. There is thus a clear fractionation of Os and Re from Ir in precipitation out of sea water in pelagic sections. Accordingly, it is inferred here that Re and Os are removed from sea water in anoxic marine depositional regimes.

As part of our continuing organic geochemical studies of sediments recovered by the Deep Sea Drilling Project, we have analyzed the types, amounts, and thermal alteration indices of organic matter in samples collected from the California continental margin on Leg 63. Some of the samples were frozen core; others were canned on site. Canned samples were analyzed for gas content using methods described by Mclver (1972). Our main objective was to see if the changes in surface circulation that had occurred through time off the California coast were reflected in changes in the type and amount of organic matter accumulating on the sea floor.

Abyssal agglutinated foraminifers allow biostratigraphic correlation of Upper Cretaceous brown zeolitic claystones in Deep Sea Drilling Project Holes 196A and 198A and Ocean Drilling Program Holes 800A and 801 A. Three agglutinated foraminiferal zones subdivide the strata overlying the Campanian to Cenomanian cherts. The lower zone is characterized by Hormosina gigantea, which is a Campanian zonal marker in the North Atlantic Ocean and western Tethys. A major correlation level, which was observed in all holes studied, is based on the acme of evolute Haplophragmoides spp. This acme zone was observed in Sample 129-801A-6R-CC, about 9 m above the first occurrence of H. gigantea in Sample 129-801A-7R-1, 62-67 cm (approximately middle Campanian). The uppermost zone is characterized by dominant Paratrochamminoides spp. and in some instances common Bolivinopsis parvissimus (late Campanian to Maestrichtian). The available biostratigraphic data for the Upper Cretaceous of Sites 196, 198, 800, and 801 are correlated with the biochronologic framework of the North Atlantic, western Mediterranean, and Carpathians. Additionally, we use quantitative estimates of the diversity and abundance of agglutinated foraminiferal species to monitor general faunal trends with time in the western Pacific.
