A common subject in bone tissue engineering is the need for porous scaffolds to support cell and tissue interactions aiming at repairing bone tissue. As poly(lactide-co-glycolide)calcium phosphate (PLGACaP) scaffolds can be manufactured with different pore sizes, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pore diameter on osteoblastic cell responses and bone tissue formation. Scaffolds were prepared with 85% porosity, with pore diameters in the ranges 470590, 590850 and 8501200 mu m. Rat bone marrow stem cells differentiated into osteoblasts were cultured on the scaffolds for up to 10 days to evaluate cell growth, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and the gene expression of the osteoblast markers RUNX2, OSX, COL, MSX2, ALP, OC and BSP by real-time PCR. Scaffolds were implanted in critical size rat calvarial defects for 2, 4, and 8 weeks for histomorphometric analysis. Cell growth and ALP activity were not affected by the pore size; however, there was an increase in the gene expression of osteoblastic markers with the increase in the pore sizes. At 2 weeks all scaffolds displayed a similar amount of bone and blood vessels formation. At 4 and 8 weeks much more bone formation and an increased number of blood vessels were observed in scaffolds with pores of 470590 mu m. These results show that PLGACaP is a promising biomaterial for bone engineering. However, ideally, combinations of larger (similar to 1000 mu m) and smaller (similar to 500 mu m) pores in a single scaffold would optimize cellular and tissue responses during bone healing. The relative amounts of amorphous and crystalline ?- and a-phases in polyamide-6 nanocomposites, estimated from the deconvolution of X-ray diffraction peaks using Gaussian functions, correlates with their mechanical, thermomechanical, and barrier properties. The incorporation of organoclay platelets (Cloisite 15A and 30B) induced the crystallization of the polymer in the ? form at expense of the amorphous phase, such that 12 wt % of Cloisite is enough to enhance the mechanical and the thermomechanical properties. However, higher nanofiller loads were necessary to achieve good barrier effects, because this property is mainly dependent on the tortuous path permeation mechanism of the gas molecules through the nanocomposite films. Background The prevalence, sociodemographic aspects, and clinical features of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) in patients with obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD) have been previously addressed in primarily relatively small samples. Methods We performed a cross-sectional demographic and clinical assessment of 901 OCD patients participating in the Brazilian Research Consortium on Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders. We used the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders; Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale; Dimensional Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DY-BOCS); Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale; Clinical Global Impression Scale; and Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventories. Results The lifetime prevalence of BDD was 12.1%. The individuals with comorbid BDD (OCD-BDD; n = 109) were younger than were those without it. In addition, the proportions of single and unemployed patients were greater in the OCD-BDD group. This group of patients also showed higher rates of suicidal behaviors; mood, anxiety, and eating disorders; hypochondriasis; skin picking; Tourette syndrome; and symptoms of the sexual/religious, aggressive, and miscellaneous dimensions. Furthermore, OCD-BDD patients had an earlier onset of OC symptoms; greater severity of OCD, depression, and anxiety symptoms; and poorer insight. After logistic regression, the following features were associated with OCD-BDD: current age; age at OCD onset; severity of the miscellaneous DY-BOCS dimension; severity of depressive symptoms; and comorbid social phobia, dysthymia, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and skin picking. Conclusions Because OCD patients might not inform clinicians about concerns regarding their appearance, it is essential to investigate symptoms of BDD, especially in young patients with early onset and comorbid social anxiety, chronic depression, skin picking, or eating disorders. Among the soils in the Mato Grosso do Sul, stand out in the Pantanal biome, the Spodosols. Despite being recorded in considerable extensions, few studies aiming to characterize and classify these soils were performed. The purpose of this study was to characterize and classify soils in three areas of two physiographic types in the Taquari river basin: bay and flooded fields. Two trenches were opened in the bay area (P1 and P2) and two in the flooded field (P3 and P4). The third area (saline) with high sodium levels was sampled for further studies. In the soils in both areas the sand fraction was predominant and the texture from sand to sandy loam, with the main constituent quartz. In the bay area, the soil organic carbon in the surface layer (P1) was (OC) > 80 g kg(-1), being diagnosed as Histic epipedon. In the other profiles the surface horizons had low OC levels which, associated with other properties, classified them as Ochric epipedons. In the soils of the bay area (P1 and P2), the pH ranged from 5.0 to 7.5, associated with dominance of Ca2+ and Mg2+, with base saturation above 50 % in some horizons. In the flooded fields (P3 and P4) the soil pH ranged from 4.9 to 5.9, H+ contents were high in the surface horizons (0.8-10.5 cmol(c) kg(-1)), Ca2+ and Mg-2 contents ranged from 0.4 to 0.8 cmol(c) kg(-1) and base saturation was < 50 %. In the soils of the bay area (P1 and P2) iron was accumulated (extracted by dithionite - Fed) and OC in the spodic horizon; in the P3 and P4 soils only Fed was accumulated (in the subsurface layers). According to the criteria adopted by the Brazilian System of Soil Classification (SiBCS) at the subgroup level, the soils were classified as: P1: Organic Hydromorphic Ferrohumiluvic Spodosol. P2: Typical Orthic Ferrohumiluvic Spodosol. P3: Typical Hydromorphic Ferroluvic Spodosol. P4: Arenic Orthic Ferroluvic Spodosol.

Objective Growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis and insulin are key determinants of bone remodelling. Homozygous mutations in the GH-releasing hormone receptor (GHRHR) gene (GHRHR) are a frequent cause of genetic isolated GH deficiency (IGHD). Heterozygosity for GHRHR mutation causes changes in body composition and possibly an increase in insulin sensitivity, but its effects on bone quality are still unknown. The objective of this study was to assess the bone quality and metabolism and its correlation with insulin sensitivity in subjects heterozygous for a null mutation in the GHRHR. Patients and methods A cross-sectional study was performed on 76 normal subjects (68.4% females) (N/N) and 64 individuals (64.1% females) heterozygous for a mutation in the GHRHR (MUT/N). Anthropometric features, quantitative ultrasound (QUS) of the heel, bone markers [osteocalcin (OC) and CrossLaps], IGF-I, glucose and insulin were measured, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMAIR) was calculated. Results There were no differences in age or height between the two groups, but weight (P = 0.007) and BMI (P = 0.001) were lower in MUT/N. There were no differences in serum levels of IGF-I, glucose, T-score or absolute values of stiffness and OC, but insulin (P = 0.01), HOMAIR (P = 0.01) and CrossLaps (P = 0.01) were lower in MUT/N. There was no correlation between OC and glucose, OC and HOMAIR in the 140 individuals as a whole or in the separate MUT/N or N/N groups. Conclusions This study suggests that one allele mutation in the GHRHR gene has a greater impact on energy metabolism than on bone quality.

The efficiency of the charge-carrier photogeneration processes in poly(2,5-bis(3',7'-dimethyl-octyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (OC(1)OC10-PPV) has been analyzed by the spectral response of the photocurrent of devices in ITO/polymer/Al structures. The symbatic response of the photocurrent action spectra of the OC1OC10-PPV devices, obtained for light-excitation through the ITO electrode and for forward bias, has been fitted using a phenomenological model which considers that the predominant transport mechanism under external applied electric field is the drift of photogenerated charge-carriers, neglecting charge-carrier diffusion. The proposed model takes into account that charge-carrier photogeneration occurs via intermediate stages of bounded pairs (excitonic states), followed by dissociation processes. Such processes result in two different contributions to the photoconductivity: The first one, associated to direct creation of unbound polaron pairs due to intrinsic photoionization; and the second one is associated to secondary processes like extrinsic photoinjection at the metallic electrodes. The results obtained from the model have shown that the intrinsic component of the photoconductivity at higher excitation energies has a considerably higher efficiency than the extrinsic one, suggesting a dependence on the photon energy for the efficiency of the photogeneration process.

The Large Scale Biosphere Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA) is a long term (20 years) research effort aimed at the understanding of the functioning of the Amazonian ecosystem. In particular, the strong biosphere-atmosphere interaction is a key component looking at the exchange processes between vegetation and the atmosphere, focusing on aerosol particles. Two aerosol components are the most visible: The natural biogenic emissions of aerosols and VOCs, and the biomass burning emissions. A large effort was done to characterize natural biogenic aerosols that showed detailed organic characterization and optical properties. The biomass burning component in Amazonia is important in term of aerosol and trace gases emissions, with deforestation rates decreasing, from 27,000 Km2 in 2004 to about 5,000 Km2 in 2011. Biomass burning emissions in Amazonia increases concentrations of aerosol particles, CO, ozone and other species, and also change the surface radiation balance in a significant way. Long term monitoring of aerosols and trace gases were performed in two sites: a background site in Central Amazonia, 55 Km North of Manaus (called ZF2 ecological reservation) and a monitoring station in Porto Velho, Rondonia state, a site heavily impacted by biomass burning smoke. Several instruments were operated to measured aerosol size distribution, optical properties (absorption and scattering at several wavelengths), composition of organic (OC/EC) and inorganic components among other measurements. AERONET and MODIS measurements from 5 long term sites show a large year-to year variability due to climatic and socio-economic issues. Aerosol optical depths of more than 4 at 550nm was observed frequently over biomass burning areas. In the pristine Amazonian atmosphere, aerosol scattering coefficients ranged between 1 and 200 Mm-1 at 450 nm, while absorption ranged between 1 and 20 Mm-1 at 637 nm. A strong seasonal behavior was observed, with greater aerosol loadings during the dry season (Jul-Nov) as compared to the wet season (Dec-Jun). During the wet season in Manaus, aerosol scattering (450 nm) and absorption (637 nm) coefficients averaged, respectively, 14 and 0.9 Mm-1. Angstrom exponents for scattering were lower during the wet season (1.6) in comparison to the dry season (1.9), which is consistent with the shift from biomass burning aerosols, predominant in the fine mode, to biogenic aerosols, predominant in the coarse mode. Single scattering albedo, calculated at 637 nm, did not show a significant seasonal variation, averaging 0.86. In Porto Velho, even in the wet season it was possible to observe an impact from anthropogenic aerosol. Black Carbon was measured at a high 20 ug/m³ in the dry season, showing strong aerosol absorption. This work presents a general description of the aerosol optical properties in Amazonia, both during the Amazonian wet and dry seasons.

The objective of this thesis is to improve the understanding of what processes and mechanism affects the distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organic carbon in coastal sediments. Because of the strong association of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) such as PCBs with organic matter in the aquatic environment, these two entities are naturally linked. The coastal environment is the most complex and dynamic part of the ocean when it comes to both cycling of organic matter and HOCs. This environment is characterised by the largest fluxes and most diverse sources of both entities. A wide array of methods was used to study these processes throughout this thesis. In the field sites in the Stockholm archipelago of the Baltic proper, bottom sediments and settling particulate matter were retrieved using sediment coring devices and sediment traps from morphometrically and seismically well-characterized locations. In the laboratory, the samples have been analysed for PCBs, stable carbon isotope ratios, carbon-nitrogen atom ratios as well as standard sediment properties. From the fieldwork in the Stockholm Archipelago and the following laboratory work it was concluded that the inner Stockholm archipelago has a low (≈ 4%) trapping efficiency for freshwater-derived organic carbon. The corollary is a large potential for long-range waterborne transport of OC and OC-associated nutrients and hydrophobic organic pollutants from urban Stockholm to more pristine offshore Baltic Sea ecosystems. Theoretical work has been carried out using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and statistical methods on a database of 4214 individual sediment samples, each with reported individual PCB congener concentrations. From this work it was concluded that the continental shelf sediments are key global inventories and ultimate sinks of PCBs. Depending on congener, 10-80% of the cumulative historical emissions to the environment are accounted for in continental shelf sediments. Further it was concluded that the many infamous and highly contaminated surface sediments of urban harbours and estuaries of contaminated rivers cannot be of importance as a secondary source to sustain the concentrations observed in remote sediments. Of the global shelf PCB inventory < 1% are in sediments near population centres while ≥ 90% is in remote areas (> 10 km from any dwellings). The remote sub-basin of the North Atlantic Ocean contains approximately half of the global shelf sediment inventory for most of the PCBs studied.

[ES] El mundo de la pesca y de los pescadpres ha estado, desde muy antiguo, envuelto en una dualidad que titubea entre la probreza y la opulencia, entre los héroes solitarios, que se juegan la vida en un mundo hostil, y los piratas que saquean el mar hasta esquilmarlo. Sin embargo, y partiendo de que todas estas situaciones y aptitudes se codean diariamente en nuestros océanos, es verdad que la pesca está plagada de circunstancias que van más allá de las simplemente bucólicas o las absolutamente malditas. La pesca es el único sustento de cientos de miles de familias desde el primer al tercer mundo, auqnue de forma mayoritaria en este último, que sufrirán en primera instancia las consecuencias de la irracionalidad, perpretada en todo el planeta, y que ha llevado la productividad del océano al borde, si no lo ha superado ya, de la sostenibilidad. Desgraciadamente, los culpables de tal sinrazón no se encuentran únicamente enrolados en los barcos de pesca, sino que piratas y mercenarios integran también las huestes de científicos, gestores y políticos con responsabilidades en pesca. Es posible incluso que sean los pescadores los únicos que han hecho su trabajo bien, pescar, aunque quizás con egoismo desmedido. (JJ Castro, Prefacio)

[ES] ¿Cuáles son las fuentes de la turbulencia en el océano? ¿Qué papel juega la turbulencia en los diferentes procesos que ocurren en el océano? En la primera parte de la charla se responderán a éstas y a otras muchas cuestiones que sobre la turbulencia y sus efectos nos podríamos plantear. Se analizará de una forma descriptiva como se desarrolla la turbulencia inducida por el viento, por procesos de doble difusión y por la cizalla vertical del flujo. Realizaremos un viaje entre las diferentes escalas de la turbulencia y cómo ésta la podemos medir en el océano. En la segunda parte de la charla se describirán las actividades que desarrolla el grupo I+D OFYGA en este materia, comentando los trabajos que se están llevando a cabo, los proyectos de investigación y la cooperación con otros grupos de investigación nacionales e internacionales.

[ES] El grupo de investigación en Ecofisiología Planctónica (GEP), de la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, tiene como objetivos los estudios de crecimiento y del metabolismo respiratorio y excretor en zooplancton, fitoplancton, bacterias y macroalgas. A partir de estas medidas primarias, el GEP puede calcular los flujos de carbono y nitrógeno oceánicos así como la eficiencia en la retención de nutrientes y el metabolismo del oceáno profundo. Estas medidas constituyen parámetros de gran importancia para el desarrollo de modelos precisos de predicción de los posibles cambios futuros en el planeta debidos al Cambio Climático. La principal premisa en la que se apoyan las investigaciones del grupo es que la bioquímica enzimática controla la fisiología de los organísmos, lo que produce un fuerte impacto en la ecología y la química oceánica. El GEP, trata también de describir los procesos fisiológicos del océano a través del uso de modelos matemáticos, para ello es necesario realizar experimentos de laboratorio así como muestreos de campo para determinar los parámetros cinéticos que controlan las reacciones que regulan la fisiología de los organísmos marinos. Asociado con GEP la empresa de base Técnológica BioceanSolutions, dedica también gran parte de sus esfuerzos en mejorar la metodología existente así como en desarrollar nuevos métodos enzimáticos, que nos permitan conocer y controlar el estado de salud de las comunidades marinas.

[ES]Las aguas de Canarias, gracias a sus condiciones físicas de temperatura y su abundancia de peces, están habitadas por una gran diversidad de estas especies. Se han documentado hasta 86 especies de tiburones y rayas,diferentes, como el angelote ('Squatina squatina'), en Peligro Crítico según la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (IUCN), o el pez martillo ('Sphyrna mokarran'), considerado En Peligro. "Debido a la enorme diversidad de especies que posee, el archipiélago canario debe adquirir un papel importante en la protección de especies marinas. Las características de sus fondos marinos hacen que sus aguas sin duda escondan muchas más especies por descubrir, y no debemos permitir que lleguen a la situación de riesgo de los elasmobranquios, de los que Canarias podría convertirse en refugio" Un tercio de los ingresos que genera el turismo de buceo en Canarias se debe a la regular presencia en sus aguas de tiburones y rayas, según un reciente estudio, en el que se defiende la protección y recuperación de estas especies para potenciar el turismo sostenible. En el mundo existen ocho santuarios se encuentran en Las Bahamas, las Maldivas, las islas Marshall, Palao, Dominica, Tokelau, las Islas Vírgenes Británicas y en Honduras Los santuarios están destinados a proteger a los tiburones porque son animales muy vulnerables, son animales que no son como cualquier otro pez, tienen larga vid y pocas crías. Se reproducen a los 18 años y apenas llegan a tener tres crías. Llegan tardíamente a la madurez. Todas esas características hacen que sean vulnerables a la sobrepesca y eso es lo que está pasando ahora, los tiburones en el mundo están desapareciendo. Más del 30 por ciento se encuentra en un estado de conservación cerca o al borde de la extinción y necesitamos medidas para proteger a estas especies que han estado por más de 400 millones de años nadando en los océanos.
