Fatigue crack growth rate tests have been performed on Nimonic AP1, a powder formed Ni-base superalloy, in air and vacuum at room temperature. These show that threshold values are higher, and near-threshold (faceted) crack growth rates are lower, in vacuum than in air, although at high growth rates, in the structure-insensitive regime, R-ratio and a dilute environment have little effect. Changing the R-ratio from 0.1 to 0.5 in vacuum does not alter near-threshold crack growth rates very much, despite more extensive secondary cracking being noticeable at R= 0.5. In vacuum, rewelding occurs at contact points across the crack as K falls. This leads to the production of extensive fracture surface damage and bulky fretting debris, and is thought to be a significant contributory factor to the observed increase in threshold values.

Threshold stress intensity values, ranging from 6 to 16 MN m 3/2 can be obtained in powder-formed Nimonic AP1 by changing the microstructure. The threshold and low crack growth rate behaviour at room temperature of a number of widely differing API microstructures, with both necklace and fully recrystallized grain structures of various sizes and uniform and bimodal -distributions, have been investigated. The results indicate that grain size is an important microstructural parameter which can control threshold behaviour, with the value of threshold stress intensity increasing with increasing grain size, but that the -distribution is also important. In this Ni-base alloy, as in many others, near threshold fatigue crack growth occurs in a crystallographic manner along {111} planes. This is due to the development of a dislocation structure involving persistent slip bands on {111} planes in the plastic zone, caused by the presence of ordered shearable precipitates in the microstructure. However, as the stress intensity range is increased, a striated growth mode takes over. The results presented show that this transition from faceted to striated growth is associated with a sudden increase in crack propagation rate and occurs when the size of the reverse plastic zone at the crack tip becomes equal to the grain size, independent of any other microstructural variables.

Intercalation of an in situ prepared [Rh(OH)6]3- complex into an anion exchangeable Ni-Zn layered hydroxy double salt (Rh/NiZn) was demonstrated. The resulting Rh/NiZn effectively catalyzed the 1,4-addition of diverse enones and phenylboronic acids to their corresponding -substituted carbonyl compounds. In the case of 2-cyclohexen-1-one and phenylboronic acid, a turnover frequency (TOF) of 920 h-1 based on Rh was achieved. The [Rh(OH)6]3- complex maintained its original monomeric trivalent state within the NiZn interlayer following catalysis, attributable to a strong electrostatic interaction between the NiZn host and anionic Rh(III) complex.

Chemical analyses of manganese nodules from the Central Pacific Basin show that their chemical composition varies regionally, although that of the associated sediments is markedly uniform throughout the basin. Mn content varies from 16 to 32% in average. Its higher value is generally found in nodules from siliceous clay and a few from deep-sea clay. Fe content tends to enrich in nodules from deep-sea clay area. Most manganese nodules, except those from deep-sea clay, are remarkably depleted in Fe compared with ones from the other Pacific regions. Mostly, Cu and Ni contents exceed 1% in nodules from siliceous clay, and decrease towards the northwest of the basin where deep-sea clay is distributed. The inter-element relationship between manganese nodules and associated sediments suggests that the mechanism of incorporation of major and minor elements in nodules is apparently different from that of the associated sediments. This finding seems to provide a new interpretation on the problem why manganese nodules having low accumulation rate are not buried by the associated sediments with greater sedimentation rate and then occur on sediment-seawater interface.

Ferromanganese concretions from ten stations in the Barents Sea have been analysed for 24 elements. The deposits occur as discoidal and flat concretions and as coatings, in the latter case on lithified or detrital material or as extensive pavements on the Svalbard shelf. The concretions are compositionally similar to Baltic concretions but differ considerably from deep-ocean nodules, particularly in Cu, Ni and Co contents. Statistical analyses reveal distinct correlations between Mn, Na, Ba, Ni and Cu; the Mn-rich coatings showed enrichment of Mo, Zn and possibly Co in a Mn-phase. The iron phase holds high concretions of P and As. Two iron-rich concretions with high contents of P, Ca, Sr, Y, Yb and La were found east and northeast of Spitsbergen Banken, probably indicating upwelling of nutrient-rich, cold polar water along the Svalbard shelf.

The determination and monitoring of metallic contaminants in water is a task that must be continuous, leading to the importance of the development, modification and optimization of analytical methodologies capab le of determining the various metal contaminants in natural environments, because, in many cases, the ava ilable instrumentation does not provide enough sensibility for the determination of trace values . In this study, a method of extraction and pre- concentration using a microemulsion system with in the Winsor II equilibrium was tested and optimized for the determination of Co, Cd, P b, Tl, Cu and Ni through the technique of high- resolution atomic absorption spectrometry using a continuum source (HR-CS AAS). The optimization of the temperature program for the graphite furnace (HR-CS AAS GF) was performed through the pyrolysis and atomization curves for the analytes Cd, Pb, Co and Tl with and without the use of different chemical modifiers. Cu and Ni we re analyzed by flame atomization (HR-CS F AAS) after pre-concentr ation, having the sample introduction system optimized for the realization of discrete sampling. Salinity and pH levels were also analyzed as influencing factors in the efficiency of the extraction. As final numbers, 6 g L -1 of Na (as NaCl) and 1% of HNO 3 (v/v) were defined. For the determination of the optimum extraction point, a centroid-simplex statistical plan was a pplied, having chosen as the optimum points of extraction for all of the analytes, the follo wing proportions: 70% aqueous phase, 10% oil phase and 20% co-surfactant/surfactant (C/S = 4). After extraction, the metals were determined and the merit figures obtained for the proposed method were: LOD 0,09, 0,01, 0,06, 0,05, 0,6 and 1,5 g L -1 for Pb, Cd, Tl, Co, Cu and Ni, re spectively. Line ar ranges of ,1- 2,0 g L -1 for Pb, 0,01-2,0 g L -1 for Cd, 1,0 - 20 g L -1 for Tl, 0,1-5,0 g L -1 for Co, 2-200 g L -1 and for Cu e Ni 5-200 g L -1 were obtained. The enrichment factors obtained ranged between 6 and 19. Recovery testing with the certified sample show ed recovery values (n = 3, certified values) after extraction of 105 and 101, 100 and 104% for Pb, Cd, Cu and Ni respectively. Samples of sweet waters of lake Jiqui, saline water from Potengi river and water produced from the oil industry (PETROBRAS) were spiked and the recovery (n = 3) for the analytes were between 80 and 112% confirming th at the proposed method can be used in the extraction. The proposed method enabled the sepa ration of metals from complex matrices, and with good pre-concentration factor, consistent with the MPV (allowed limits) compared to CONAMA Resolution No. 357/2005 which regulat es the quality of fresh surface water, brackish and saline water in Brazil.

Increasing energy demand is being met largely by fossil fuel reserves, which emit CO2, SOx gases and various other pollutants. So does the search for fuels that emit fewer pollutants and have the same energy efficiency. In this context, hydrogen (H2) has been increasingly recognized as a potential carrier of energy for the near future. This is because the H2 can be obtained by different routes and has a wide application area , in addition to having clean burning, generating only H2O as a product of combustion , and higher energy density per unit mass . The Chemical Looping Reforming process (CLR) has been extensively investigated in recent years, it is possible to regenerate the catalyst by applying cycles of reduction and oxidation. This work has as main objective to develop catalysts based on nickel and cobalt to study the reactivity of reform with chemical recycling process. The catalysts were prepared by three different methods: combustion assisted by microwave, wet impregnation and co-precipitation. All catalysts synthesized have the same amount by weight of the active phases (60% w / w). The other 40 % m/m consists in La2O3 (8% w / w), Al2O3 (30% w / w) and MgO (2%). Oxygen carriers have been named as follows: N or C, nickel or cobalt, followed by the number 3 or 6, meaning 30 to 60% of active phase in the oxide form and C, CI or CP, which means self-combustion assisted by microwave, self-combustion assisted by microwave followed by wet impregnation and co-precipitation. The oxygen carriers were then characterized by the techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface area (BET), temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The characterization results showed that the different synthesis methods have led to obtaining different morphologies and structures. Redox tests using CH4 as reducing agent and sintetic air as oxidant agent was done with N6C and C6C, N6CI and C6CI and N6CP and C6CP oxygen carriers. The tests revealed different behaviors, depending on active phase and on synthesis procedure. N6C oxygen carrier produced high levels of H2. The C6CI oxygen carrier produced CO2 and H2O without carbon deposits.

Were synthesized in this work in the following aqueous solution coordination compounds: [Ni(LDP)(H2O)2Cl2].2H2O, [Co(LDP)Cl2].3H2O, [Ni(CDP)Cl2].4H2O, [Co(CDP)Cl2].4H2O, [Ni(BDZ)2Cl2].4H2O and [Co(BDZ)2Cl2(H2O)2]. These complexes were synthesized by stoichiometric addition of the binder in the respective metal chloride solutions. Precipitation occurred after drying the solvent at room temperature. The characterization and proposed structures were made using conventional analysis methods such as elemental analysis (CHN), absorption spectroscopy in the infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction by the powder method and Technical thermoanalytical TG / DTG (thermogravimetry / derivative thermogravimetry) and DSC (differential scanning calorimetry). These techniques provided information on dehydration, coordination modes, thermal performance, composition and structure of the synthesized compounds. The results of the TG curve, it was possible to establish the general formula of each compound synthesized. The analysis of X-ray diffraction was observed that four of the synthesized complex crystal structure which does not exhibit the complex was obtained from Ldopa and carbidopa and the complex obtained from benzimidazole was obtained crystal structures. The observations of the spectra in the infrared region suggested a monodentate ligand coordination to metal centers through its amine group for all complexes. The TG-DTG and DSC curves provide important information and on the behavior and thermal decomposition of the synthesized compounds. The molar conductivity data indicated that the solutions of the complexes formed behave as a nonelectrolyte, which implies that chlorine is coordinated to the central atom in the complex.

Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, and Co contents in bottom sediment samples from the Clarion Clipperton fracture zone and Guatemala Basin were studied; maps of their distribution in the upper layer of sediments were prepared. At some stations contents of these elements were also measured in Pleistocene and Oligocene sediments. Elevated contents of five ore elements (except for Zn) were found at the East Pacific Rise and in the Clarion-Clipperton province; and of Mn, Ni, and Cu in the Guatemala basin. Increased zinc contents occur only in sediments of the East Pacific Rise and Guatemala Basin. Enrichment of sediments in these elements results from underwater hydrothermal activity and high biological productivity.

Mn, Fe, Ca, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Sn, Tl, Pb and Bi have been estimated in thirty-two nodules from the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. Various features about the composition of manganese nodules are discussed: element abundances, degrees of enrichment, inter-element relationships (notably between Ni and Cu, and between Zn and Cd), regional variations and some aspects of statistical distribution.

In this report we have investigated the use of Ni foam substrates as anode current collectors for Li-ion batteries. As the majority of reports in the literature focus on hydrothermal formation of materials on Ni foam followed by a high temperature anneal/oxidation step, we probed the fundamental electrochemical responses of as received Ni foam substrates and those subjected to heating at 100C, 300C and 450C. Through cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic testing, it is shown that the as received and 100C annealed Ni foam show negligible electrochemical activity. However, Ni foams heated to higher temperature showed substantial electrochemical contributions which may lead to inflated capacities and incorrect interpretations of CV responses for samples subjected to high temperature anneals. XRD, XPS and SEM analyses clearly illustrate that the formation of electrochemically active NiO nanoparticles on the surface of the foam is responsible for this behavior. To further investigate the contribution of the oxidized Ni foam to the overall electrochemical response, we formed Co3O4 nanoflowers directly on Ni foam at 450C and showed that the resulting electrochemical response was dominated by NiO after the first 10 charge/discharge cycles. This report highlights the importance of assessing current collector activity for active materials grown on transition metal foam current collectors for Li-ion applications.

The comparison of Mn/Fe, Co/Ni, Co/Fe, Ni/Mn, and Cu/Fe ratios is presented and it is noticed that Co/Ni and Ni/Mn ratios of nodules fairly coincide with those of coexisting sediments. This agreement suggests that Mn, Ni, and Co are accumulated in both nodules and sediments at about the same rates. According to the calculation of Somayajulu et al. similar consideration is also applicable to Cu. Results are, however, implying that Cu co-precipitates with Fe, rather than Mn.
