in this work. nickel hexacyanoferrate-modified electrode was developed to determine potassium ions in biodiesel by potentiometry. The modified electrodes exhibit a linear response to potassium ions in the concentration range of 4.0 x 10(-5) to 1.0 x 10(-2) mol L-1, with a detection limit of 1.9 x 10(-5) mol L-1. and a near-Nernstian slope (53-55 mV per decade) at 25 degrees C. The method developed in this work was compared with flame photometry and the potassium concentration found in biodiesel showed that the modified electrode method gives results similar to those obtained by flame photometry. A nickel modified boron doped diamond (Ni-BDD) electrode and nickel foil electrode were used in the determination of methanol in alkaline solutions. The Ni-BDD electrode was electrodeposited from a 1 mM Ni(NO(3))(2) solution (pH 5), followed by repeat cycling in KOH. Subsequent analysis utilised the Ni(OH)(2)/NiOOH redox couple to electrocatalyse the oxidation of methanol. Methanol was determined to limits of 0.3 mM with a sensitivity of 110 nA/mM at the Ni-BDD electrode. The foil electrode was less sensitive achieving a limit of 1.6 mM and sensitivity of 27 nA/mM. SEM analysis of the electrodes found the Ni-BDD to be modified by a quasi-random microparticle array.

Ceftazidime is hydrolysed only slowly at pH 10 at room temperature. This is indicated by a small cathodic stripping voltammetric peak obtained at pH 10 at a hanging mercury drop electrode at about -0.6 V which corresponds to the reduction of the hydrolysis product. This peak is enhanced more than tenfold by the addition of poly-L-lysine (PLL) to the electrolyte solution. The optimum accumulation potential is between 0 and -0.1 V: the size of the peak decreases steadily, however, as the accumulation potential is moved to more negative potentials and is about one-sixth the size for accumulation at -0.4 V. Existing knowledge of the organic chemistry of cephalosporins indicates that the accumulation must involve an aminolysis reaction of the unprotonated PLL with the beta-lactam ring of the ceftazidime. The limit of detection (3 sigma) in standard solutions was calculated to be 1 x 10(-10) mol l(-1). The detection limit in buffer solution containing 1% of urine was calculated to be 5 x 10(-9) mol l(-1), i.e. 5 x 10(-6) mol l(-1) in the urine. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. AU rights reserved.

Kinetic studies of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the surface of Pt in alkaline conditions, reported in this paper, show that electrocatalytic activity is enhanced after adsorption of S-2 ions. EIS and steady-state polarization curve data pointed to an undoubted improvement in performance with the Pt-S cathode that was attributed to higher adsorbed hydrogen coverage. Experimental findings suggested an increase in the electronic density of the modified surface sites that may strengthen the interaction between H2O and the adsorption site and, consequently, accelerates the Volmer step. Flow injection amperometric detection of ascorbic acid using a Prussian Blue film-modified electrode
Resumo:
The PB film-modified electrode was used as an amperometric detector for flow injection analysis of ascorbic acid. The modified electrode detector showed good sensitivity, stability and reproducibility. The calibration curve for ascorbic acid was linear over the concentration range from 5.0 x 10(-6) to 1.0 x 10(-3) mol l(-1) with a slope of 19.9 mA mol(-1) per litre and a correlation coefficient of 0.999. The detection limit of this method was 2.49 x 10(-6) mol l(-1). The relative standard deviation of six replicate injections of 2.5 x 10(-4) mol l(-1) ascorbic acid was 2.5%. The results obtained for ascorbic acid determination in pharmaceutical products are in good agreement with those obtained by using the procedure involving the reaction between triiodide and ascorbic acid. In this work, a hydrophilic clay, Na-montmorillonite from Wyoming, USA, was rendered organophilic by exchanging the inorganic interlayer cations for hexaclecyltrimethylammonium ions (HDTA), with the formulae of [(CH3)(3)N(C16H33)](+) ion. Based on fact that organo-clay has high affinities for non-ionic organic molecules, 1,3,4-thiadiazole-2,5-dithiol was loaded oil the HDTA-montmorillonite surface, resulting in the 1,3,4-thiadiazole-2,5-dithiol-HDTA-montmorillonite complex (TDD-organo-clay).The following properties of TDD-organo-clay are discussed: selective adsorption of heavy metal ions measured by batch and chromatographic column techniques, and utilization as preconcentration agent in a chemically modified carbon paste electrode (CMCPE) for determination of mercury(II).The main point of this paper is the construction of a selective sensor, a carbon paste electrode modified with TDD-organo-clay, its properties and its application to the determination of mercury(II) ions, as this element belongs to the most toxic metals. The chemical selectivity of this functional group and the selectivity of voltammetry were combined for preconcentration and determination. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Glassy polymeric carbon (GPC) is a useful material for medical applications due to its chemical inertness and biocompatible characteristics. Mitral and aortic and hydrocephalic valves are examples of GPC prosthetic devices that have been fabricated and commercialized in Brazil. In this work, ion beam was used to improve the mechanical characteristics of GPC surface and therefore to avoid the propagation of microcracks where the cardiac valves are more fragile. A control group of phenolic resin samples heat-treated at 300, 400, 700, 1000, 1500, and 2500 degrees C was characterized by measuring their hardness and Young's reduced elastic modulus with the depth of indentation. The control group was compared to results obtained with samples heat-treated at 700, 1000, and 1500 degrees C and bombarded with energetic ions of silicon, carbon, oxygen, and gold at energies of 5, 6, 8, and 10 MeV, respectively, with fluences between 10x10(13) and 10x10(16) ions/cm(2). GPC nonbombarded samples showed that hardness depends on the heat treatment temperature (HTT), with a maximum hardness for heat treatment at 1000 degrees C. The comparison between the control group and bombarded group also showed that hardness, after bombardment, had a greater increase for samples prepared at 700 degrees C than for samples prepared at higher temperatures. The Young's elastic modulus presents an exponential relationship with depth. The parameters obtained by fitting depend on the HTT and on the ion used in the bombardment more than on energy and fluence. The hardness results show clearly that bombardment can promote carbonization, increase the linkage between the chains of the polymeric material, and promote recombination of broken bonds in lateral groups that are more numerous for samples heat-treated at 700 degrees C. Silica gel with a specific area of 382 m2 g-1 and an average pore diameter of 60 Å was chemically modified with 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole, for the purpose of selective adsorption of heavy metals ions and possible use as a chemically modified carbon paste electrode (CMCPE). The following properties of this functionalized silica gel are discussed: selective adsorption of heavy metal ions measured by batch and chromatographic column techniques, and utilization as preconcentration agent in a chemically modified carbon paste electrode (CMCPE) for determination of mercury(II). Pyrazinamide (Pyrazinecarboxamide-PZA) is a drug that is used to treatment tuberculosis. In the present work, the voltammetric behavior of PZA was studied using a screen-printed modified electrode (SPCE). The modified electrode was constructed using poly-histidine films, and it showed an electrocatalytic effect, thus promoting a decrease in PZA reduction potential and improving the voltammetric response. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques have been employed in order to elucidate of the electrodic reaction. The results allowed the proposal that in the PZA reduction, a further chemical reaction occurs that corresponds to a second-order process which is subsequent to the electrode reaction. In addition, a sensitive voltammetric method was developed, and it was successfully applied for PZA determination in human urine samples. The best response was found using SPCE modified with poly-histidine prepared by histidine monomer electropolymerization (SPCE/EPH). The electroanalytical performance of the SPCE/EPH was investigated by linear sweep (LSV), differential pulse (DPV), and square wave voltammetry (SWV). A linear relationship between peak current and PZA concentrations was obtained from 9.0 × 10-7 to 1.0 × 10-4 mol L-1 by using DPV. The limit of detection at 5.7 × 10 -7 mol L-1 was estimated, and a relative standard deviation of the 5.0 × 10-6 mol L-1 of PZA of 10 measurement was 3.7%. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A comparative study using different mass proportions of WO3/C (1%, 5%, 10% and 15%) for H2O2 electrogeneration and subsequent phenol degradation was performed. To include the influence of the carbon substrate and the preparation methods, all synthesis parameters were evaluated. The WO3/C materials were prepared by a modified polymeric precursor method (PPM) and the sol-gel method (SGM) on Vulcan XC 72R and Printex L6 carbon supports, verifying the most efficient metal/carbon proportion. The materials were physically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The XRD and the XPS techniques identified just one phase containing WO3 and elevated oxygen concentration on carbon with the presence of WO3. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), studied by the rotating ring-disk electrode technique, showed that WO3/C material with the lowest tungsten content (1% WO3/C), supported on Vulcan XC 72R and prepared by SGM, was the most promising electrocatalyst for H2O2 electrogeneration. This material was then analyzed using a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) and 585mgL-1 of H2O2 was produced in acid media. This GDE was employed as a working electrode in an electrochemical cell to promote phenol degradation by an advanced oxidative process. The most efficient method applied was the photo-electro-Fenton; this method allowed for 65% degradation and 11% mineralization of phenol during a 2-h period. Following 12h of exhaustive electrolysis using the photo-electro-Fenton method, the total degradation of phenol was observed after 4h and the mineralization of phenol approached 75% after 12h. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

A low-cost electrochemical method was developed for the determination of trace-level of methyl parathion (MP) based on the properties of graphite-modified basal plane pyrolytic graphite electrode (graphite-bppg). A combination of graphite-bppg with square-wave voltammetric (SWV) analysis resulted in an original, sensitive and selective electrochemical method for determination of MP pesticide in drinking water. The electrode was constructed and the electrochemical behavior of MP was studied. Immobilization is achieved via film modification from dispersing graphite powder in deionized water and through pipeting a small volume onto the electrode surface allowing the solvent to volatilize. The strong affinity of the graphite modifier for the phosphorous group of the MP allowed the deposition of a significant amount of MP in less than 60 seconds. The cyclic voltammetric results indicate that the graphite-bppg electrode can enhance sensitivity in current intensity towards the quasi-reversible redox peaks of the products of the cathodic reduction of the nitro group at negative potential (peak I = 0.077 V and peak II = –0.062 V) and that the cathodic irreversible peak (peak III = –0.586 V) in comparison with bare bppg electrode and is also adsorption controlled process. Under optimized conditions, the concentration range and detection limit for MP pesticide are respectively 79.0 to 263.3 mmol L-1 and 3.00 mmol L-1. The proposed method was successfully applied to MP determination in drinking water and the performance of this electrochemical sensor has been evaluated in terms of analytical figures of merit.
