Even though the national-level political scene in Ukraine is dominated by the Party of Regions, the west of the country has seen a progressing increase in the activity of the Svoboda (Freedom) party, a group that combines participation in the democratically elected local government of Eastern Galicia with street actions, characteristic of anti-system groups. This party has brought a new quality to the Ukrainian nationalist movement, as it refers to the rhetoric of European anti-liberal and neo-nationalist movements, and its emergence is a clear response to public demand for a group of this sort. The increase in its popularity plays into the hands of the Party of Regions, which is seeking to weaken the more moderate opposition parties (mainly the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc). However, Svoboda retains its independence from the ruling camp. This party, in all likelihood, will become a permanent and important player in Ukrainian political life, although its influence may be restricted to Eastern Galicia. Svoboda is determined to fight the tendencies in Ukrainian politics and the social sphere which it considers pro-Russian. Its attitude towards Russia and Russians, furthermore, is unambiguously hostile. In the case of Poland, it reduces mutual relations almost exclusively to the historical aspects, strongly criticising the commemoration of the victims of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army’s (UPA) crimes. This may cause tension in Polish-Ukrainian relations, where they are affected by decisions made by local governments controlled by the Svoboda Party.

On both sides of the Atlantic, populism on the left and the right is on the rise. Its most visible standard-bearer in the United States is Donald Trump, the Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee. In Europe, there are many strands – from Spain’s leftist Podemos party to France’s right-wing National Front – but all share the same opposition to centrist parties and to the establishment in general. What accounts for voters’ growing revolt against the status quo?

Historically an ectoparasite of the native Giant honey bee Apis dorsata, the mite Tropilaelaps mercedesae has switched hosts to the introduced western honey bee Apis mellifera throughout much of Asia. Few data regarding lethal and sub-lethal effects of T. mercedesae on A. mellifera exist, despite its similarity to the devastating mite Varroa destructor. Here we artificially infested worker brood of A. mellifera with T. mercedesae to investigate lethal (longevity) and sub-lethal (emergence weight, Deformed wing virus (DWV) levels and clinical symptoms of DWV) effects of the mite on its new host. The data show that T. mercedesae infestation significantly reduced host longevity and emergence weight, and promoted both DWV levels and associated clinical symptoms. Our results suggest that T. mercedesae is a potentially important parasite to the economically important A. mellifera honey bee.

BACKGROUND Ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) from the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) region can be inaccessible for ablation because of epicardial fat or overlying coronary arteries. OBJECTIVE We describe surgical cryoablation of this type of VA. METHODS From March 2009 to 2014, 190 consecutive patients with VAs originating from the LVOT underwent ablation at our institution. Four patients (2%) underwent surgical cryoablation for highly symptomatic VAs after failing catheter ablation. RESULTS In all patients, endocardial or percutaneous epicardial mapping was consistent with origin in the LVOT. In 2 patients, the points of earliest activation during VAs were marked with a bipolar pacing lead in the overlying cardiac vein for guidance during surgery. Surgical cryoablation was successful in 3 of the 4 patients. The fourth patient subsequently had successful endocardial catheter ablation. During a mean follow-up of 22 ± 16 months (range 4-42 months), all patients showed abolition of or marked reduction in symptomatic VA. However, 1 patient subsequently required percutaneous intervention to the left anterior descending coronary artery; another developed progressive left ventricular systolic dysfunction caused by nonischemic cardiomyopathy; and a third patient underwent permanent pacemaker implantation because of complete atrioventricular block after concomitant aortic valve replacement. CONCLUSION Surgical cryoablation is an option for highly symptomatic drug-resistant VAs emanating from the LVOT region. Despite extensive preoperative mapping, the procedure is not effective for all patients, and coronary injury is a risk.
