Urban populations that live in the outskirts of major Latin American cities usually face conditions of vulnerability attached to complex environmental issues, such as the lack of sewerage, floods, pollution and soil and water contamination. This article reports an intervention research programme in Sao Paulo, Brazil that combines a moral education approach with sustainability awareness in vulnerable communities. The main conceptual foundations of the project, designed to empower the community and promote ethical and environmental awareness are: strengthening the ties between the school and the surrounding community in order to construct 'moral atmosphere'; adoption of Problem- and Project-based Learning and the Design Thinking approach to reach the proposed goals.

ABSTRACT In urbanism, the type of spatial fragmentation, that will be the main focus of this Thesis, occurs when a stronger and denser environment takes over a smaller entity, forcing it to adapt its functional relations. This type of fragmentation will be analyzed taking into account three specific factors (speculation, disorganization, and lack of protection) that mold the development of modern urbanistic processes in large Latin American cities, particularly in Mexico City. Mexico City had a highly competitive and bright development, which served as catalyst in a long and sustained urban growth. With the passing of time, the capital has outgrown the measures, previsions and administrative limits created by the government and its visionaries. The detailed study of the Tacubaya settlement (which conforms a vibrant part of Mexico City) will allow the reader to appreciate the exceptional and rare growth that occurs in Mexico City and in the settlements that surround it, in the first half of the 20th century. Tacubaya as well as many other small preexisting settlements located on the outskirts of the city, has been engulfed by the urban expansion suffering important changes in its urban core. Parts of the ancient centrality have persisted along with its structural urban elements, due mainly to monuments and other historical entities that have facilitated the reinvention of the downtown area, helping it survive not only the passing of time, but also the incrementing population. The city that now exists is fragmented beyond recognition. Tacubaya is permeated by an endless fabric overlay created by forgotten structural elements, floating populations that affect the residential zones, and a polarized society that diverges with every passing day. We may think that the circumstances that surround the city have left it in shambles; however, to the surprise of many, Tacubaya is still adapting in spite of all the obstacles.

ABSTRACT In its growth process, the cities of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have had a historical link with the dynamics of implementation tools and engendered in other contexts, especially from Europe (EU) and the US methodologies (USA). From colonial times until today, most LAC cities have experienced various types of external urban influence that have left tangible traces. This influence has varied over the years, since the introduction of direct, typical of the colonial era; to import all or part independently and outside the origin of this urban model. Currently, in LAC they have generated various initiatives to address urban needs from its specificities, but notes that the instruments used in cutting-edge projects and developed countries, are still more attractive force and spread to neighboring initiatives. It is observed that the intermediate cities, which grow faster than big cities are also actively involved in this process, although with different constraints and other limitations to the big cities of the region. Why this dynamic occurs?, Who ?, which involved processes are ?, respond to the needs of complex and diverse Latin American urban context? Intermediate Latin American cities to external urban models, is a research that addresses the dynamics of exogenous implementation of urban development models in emerging cities in their growth process, they tend to repeat patterns of large cities, and represent a shot at LAC regional imbalances. This dynamic has been addressed by researchers from various disciplines, whose views often do not match, but show that we are facing a long-standing debate between modernists and identity visions on urban history of ALC. Therefore, the work shows the evolution of the processes of decision making, developed under a (global, international, regional, national, subnational, local) cascade effect, which currently stands at the Local level Regional level spaces (ALC) and International, from mere recipients of policies generated on a higher plane derived from the geopolitical and geo-economic relations worldwide; to be proactive in the development of their territories subject. To observe this process concatenation macro-micro-discipline (roughly), a triangulation methodology tool, from which it can view the context in which the dynamic occurs and how it affects what arises. ALC will address her as if general study, making an approach to detail two particular cases: Ciudad Guayana (Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela) and Santiago de los Caballeros (Dominican Republic). These cases, together with the comments of stakeholders involved in the dynamics of transfer of urban models, will assist in this effort approach to define more clearly a process that increases and more complex, amid the so-called "era of the cities".

There was a time when tram services were critical to public transport in many of the largest cities of Latin America; however, trams disappeared about fifty years ago, for a number of reasons. They are back now, especially in the cities of the more developed world, in a modern version usually known as light rail transit. Latin America has developed its own concept of urban mass transit, namely, high-capacity buses operating in special lanes as an integral component of the overall mass transit system. As a general rule, this Latin American solution seems to be the best suited to the needs of the region, given its flexibility, cost and capacity. Each situation must be assessed separately, however, and in some cases, a modernized version of the tramway may be the best solution.

This dissertation examines how Buenos Aires emerged as a creative capital of mass culture and cultural industries in South America during a period when Argentine theater and cinema expanded rapidly, winning over a regional marketplace swelled by transatlantic immigration, urbanization and industrialization. I argue that mass culture across the River Plate developed from a singular dynamic of exchange and competition between Buenos Aires and neighboring Montevideo. The study focuses on the Argentine, Uruguayan, and international performers, playwrights, producers, cultural impresarios, critics, and consumers who collectively built regional cultural industries. The cultural industries in this region blossomed in the interwar period as the advent of new technologies like sound film created profitable opportunities for mass cultural production and new careers for countless theater professionals. Buenos Aires also became a global cultural capital in the wider Hispanic Atlantic world, as its commercial culture served a region composed largely of immigrants and their descendants. From the 1920s through the 1940s, Montevideo maintained a subordinate but symbiotic relationship with Buenos Aires. The two cities shared interlinked cultural marketplaces that attracted performers and directors from the Atlantic world to work in theatre and film productions, especially in times of political upheaval such as the Spanish Civil War and the Perón era in Argentina. As a result of this transnational process, Argentine mass culture became widely consumed throughout South America, competing successfully with Hollywood, European, and other Latin American cinemas and helping transform Buenos Aires into a cosmopolitan metropolis. By examining the relationship between regional and national frames of cultural production, my dissertation contributes to the fields of Latin American studies and urban history while seeking to de-center the United States and Europe from the central framing of transnational history.

This paper evaluate the hypothesis that race is a determining factor in access to quality employment in Colombia during 2007 -- Using data from the Large Integrated Household Survey (2007-I), we estimate a generalized ordered logit model -- The results provide evidence that individuals self-identified as Afrocolombian have a higher probability of being in a low quality job than other Colombians -- This probability is higher by 1.9% in Cali, 3.4% in Bogotá, 12.6% in Barranquilla, 1.8% in Cartagena, 1.1% in Medellin and 3.8% overall in these five cities, results that could indicate that there is racial discrimination against Afrocolombians in the Colombian labor market

The Internet has been shown to positively influence the export activities of firms from developed countries. However, the literature is vague as to whether the Internet has an impact on the export market growth of firms form developing countries. This paper examines of a cross-national sample of 204 firms from a Latin American country (Chile). The results show that Internet marketing activities positively influence information availability and business relationships, which lead to an increase in export market growth. The findings indicate that the Internet influences not only information availability for export performance but also business relationships generally thought to be face to face interactions in nature.

In this paper, we seek to examine the effect of comparisons and social capital on subjective well-being. Furthermore, we test if, through social influence and exposure, social capital is either an enhancer or appeaser of the comparison effect. Using the Latinobarómetro Survey (2007) we find that in contrast to most previous studies, the comparison effect on well-being is positive; that is, the better others perform, the happier the individual is. We also find that social capital is among the strongest correlates of individuals’ subjective well-being in Latin American countries. Furthermore, our findings suggest that social contacts may enhance the comparison effect on individual’s happiness, which is more intense for those who perform worse in their reference group.
