Given that landfills are depletable and replaceable resources, the right approach, when dealing with landfill management, is that of designing an optimal sequence of landfills rather than designing every single landfill separately. In this paper we use Optimal Control models, with mixed elements of both continuous and discrete time problems, to determine an optimal sequence of landfills, as regarding their capacity and lifetime. The resulting optimization problems involve splitting a time horizon of planning into several subintervals, the length of which has to be decided. In each of the subintervals some costs, the amount of which depends on the value of the decision variables, have to be borne. The obtained results may be applied to other economic problems such as private and public investments, consumption decisions on durable goods, etc.

The optimal capacities and locations of a sequence of landfills are studied, and the interactions between these characteristics are considered. Deciding the capacity of a landfill has some spatial implications since it affects the feasible region for the remaining landfills, and some temporal implications because the capacity determines the lifetime of the landfill and hence the moment of time when the next landfills should be constructed. Some general mathematical properties of the solution are provided and interpreted from an economic point of view. The resulting problem turns out to be non-convex and, therefore, it cannot be solved by conventional optimization techniques. Some global optimization methods are used to solve the problem in a particular case in order to illustrate how the solution depends on the parameter values.

Leachates are effluent produced by decomposition of solid waste, they have complex composition and can be highly toxic. Therefore such percolated liquid should be collected and treated properly to avoid environmental contamination of soil and of water bodies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the toxicity through ecotoxicological tests with Ceriodaphnia dubia (Cladocera - Crustacea) of percolated liquids generated in two different systems of municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal in the city of Natal/ RN: A Sanitary Landfill in the Metropolitan Region of Natal/ RN, and in a dump off area. Furthermore, it was evaluated the possible contamination of the underground water of the dump off area. Two monthly samples were taken at four points between the months of May/2009 and January/2010. The Point "A" corresponds to the end of the pond leachate treatment in ASRMN; The Point "B" corresponds to a containment pond at the dump. The Point "C" is an area near one of the cells of the dump off area where the leachate outcrops; The Point "D" stands for an underground water well at the area. The last point, called "E" was sampled only once and corresponds to the slurry produced by temporary accumulation of solid waste in the open area of the dump. The ecotoxicological tests, acute and chronic, followed the ABNT 13373/2005 rules, with some modifications. The samples were characterized by measuring the pH number, the dissolved oxygen (DO), the salinity, BOD5, COD, Cd, Cu, Pb, Cr, Fe, Mg, Ni, and Zn. At Point A, the average number of EC50-48h ranged between 1.0% and 2.77% (v/v), showing a high toxicity of the leachate to C.dubia in all months. To this point, positive correlations were found between the EC50- 48 with precipitation. Negative correlations were found between the EC50- 48h with salinity. At point B there was no response of the acute exposure of organisms to the test samples. At point C the EC50-48h ranged from 17.68% to 35.36% in just two months of the five ones analyzed, not correlated meaning. Point D, the EC50-48h level ranged between 12.31% and 71.27%, showed a negative correlation with, only, precipitation. Although it was observed toxicity of underground water in the Landfill Area, there was no evidence of water contamination by leachate, however, due to the toxic character of this water, additional tests should be conducted to confirm the quality of water that is used for human supply. At point E there was no acute toxicity. These results support the dangers of inappropriate disposal of MSW to water bodies due to the high toxicity of the leachate produced highlighting the necessity of places of safe confinement and a treatment system more effective to it

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficiency of the process of biodigestion of the protein concentrate resulting from the ultrafiltration of the effluent from a slaughterhouse freezer of Nile tilapia. Bench digesters were used with excrements and water (control) in comparison with a mixture of cattle manure and effluent from the stages of filleting and bleeding of tilapias. The effluent obtained in the continuous process (bleeding + filleting) was the one with highest accumulated population from the 37th day, as well as greatest daily production. Gases composition did not differ between the protein concentrates, but the gas obtained with the use of the effluent from the filleting stage presented highest methane gas average (78.05%) in comparison with those obtained in the bleeding stage (69.95%) and in the continuous process (70.02%) or by the control method (68.59%).

The waste tire is belonging to insoluble high polymer elastic materials. It takes hundreds of years to resolve the macromolecules of waste tire into the standard which does not pollute the environment. More and more waste tires are air stored which causes space occupation and mosquito-breeding in the places that will spread diseases. The disposal methods include landfill, stockpiles, dumping and incising into particles. However, all these methods are not technically and economically efficient. The trend for the development of waste tire treatment processes is low cost, on-site, and high product recovery at high energy efficiency. In this project, microwave energy has been applied for treatment of the waste tire in laboratory scale. Experimental conditions were varied in order to find the optimum processing parameters such as temperature and atmosphere. The microwave absorption capability of waste tire rubber was investigated by measuring its dielectric properties from room temperature to 800°C in stagnant air and pure nitrogen atmospheres, respectively, at both 915 and 2466MHz.The dielectric parameters data increase steadily at temperatures below 400°C. At temperatures above 400°C, the relative dielectric loss factor and relative dielectric constant begin to decrease. This is due to the solid phase of tire rubber begins to transform to gas phase and the release of volatiles. The calculations of microwave half-power depth and penetration depth of waste tire rubber show that the pyrolysis process significantly improves the microwave absorption capability of the waste tire rubber at low temperatures. The calculated reflection loss of the waste tire rubber suggests that its maximum microwave absorption can be obtained when the rubber has a thickness of 25mm at 915MHz. The sample dimension has a significant effect on the overall performance of microwave absorption in waste tire during pyrolysis and thus on the efficiency of microwave waste tire rubber pyrolysis.

A waste sort is a process of hand-sorting onsite waste in order to quantify the amount and type of solid waste generated by businesses, organizations and municipalities to determine how much waste is ultimately ending up in the landfill. Data from waste sort events assists in identifying current waste practices and the feasibility of implementing commodity specific waste reduction, recycling and education programs.

Waste from a deer-processing facility is required by law to be disposed of in any permitted municipal solid waste (Class 3) landfill or a permitted construction and demolition debris (Class 2) landfill that has specific approval to accept animal carcasses. Disposal of deer-processing waste on the property of the processing facility or at any other unpermitted site IS NOT ALLOWED. Waste from commercial deer processing facilities must be disposed of per the requirements of the S.C. Solid Waste Policy and Management Act of 1991.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of wastewater is a very interesting option for waste valorization, energy production and environment protection. It is a complex, naturally occurring process that can take place inside bioreactors. The capability of predicting the operation of such bioreactors is important to optimize the design and the operation conditions of the reactors, which, in part, justifies the numerous AD models presently available. The existing AD models are not universal, have to be inferred from prior knowledge and rely on existing experimental data. Among the tasks involved in the process of developing a dynamical model for AD, the estimation of parameters is one of the most challenging. This paper presents the identifiability analysis of a nonlinear dynamical model for a batch reactor. Particular attention is given to the structural identifiability of the model, which considers the uniqueness of the estimated parameters. To perform this analysis, the GenSSI toolbox was used. The estimation of the model parameters is achieved with genetic algorithms (GA) which have already been used in the context of AD modelling, although not commonly. The paper discusses its advantages and disadvantages.

Emphasis on the analysis of urban waste production in Alentejo Central - Portugal and the use of the DEA in defining the separate collection target This professional report presents the theme of the Urban Waste (UW) production in Central Alentejo, using the DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) to analyse the target set for selective collection in 2020. Generally, the higher the degree of economic development of a region, the greater the rate of urbanization and the greater also the amount of municipal waste produced per capita. The variables income and urbanization are highly correlated, if you have an increase in the disposable income and living standards, the consumption of goods and services will increase accordingly, which leads to the increase of the amount of produced waste. Thus, taking into account the local impact that the abandoned UW brings, and in order to break the link between economic growth and the environmental impacts associated with the production of waste, countries with high levels of development implement policies based on integrated UW management models that allow the recovery, recycling and valorisation of materials, restricting the disposal (landfill) to non-recoverable fractions, which creates jobs and wealth. Portugal established a national strategic plan for Urban Waste (PERSU 2020) which defines the goals and national targets, including the selective collection target stating for 2020 a minimum recover of 47 kg per capita per year. Then it is relevant to characterize and compare the evolution of UW production and GDP in Portugal for the period 2002 to 2012. The analysis then focuses on the production of UW in Alentejo, particularly in Central Alentejo region, which shows a high per capita level compared to the rest of the country, placed just above the Greater Porto and Lisbon region. Then we explore several possible reasons for this high level of UW production in this region, but none is successful in producing strong evidence. As the DEA is used in PERSU 2020 to support the projection of the selective collection targets for the municipal waste management systems, in this report we develop the model, which allowed access to the data and a more detailed analyse. Then we introduce and test a new input, the number of separate collection deposition equipment, which gives new results that are compared with the original ones.

This thesis presents advances in integration of photovoltaic (PV) power and energy in practical systems, such as existing power plants in buildings or directly integrated in the public electrical grid. It starts by providing an analyze of the current state of PV power and some of its limitations. The work done in this thesis begins by providing a model to compute mutual shading in large PV plants, and after provides a study of the integration of a PV plant in a biogas power plant. The remainder sections focus on the work done for project PVCROPS, which consisted on the construction and operation of two prototypes composed of a PV system and a novel battery connected to a building and to the public electrical grid. These prototypes were then used to test energy management strategies and validate the suitability of the two advanced batteries (a lithium-ion battery and a vanadium redox ow battery) for households (BIPV) and PV plants. This thesis is divided in 7 chapters: Chapter 1 provides an introduction to explain and develop the main research questions studied for this thesis; Chapter 2 presents the development of a ray-tracing model to compute shading in large PV elds (with or without trackers); Chapter 3 shows the simulation of hybridizing a biogas plant with a PV plant, using biogas as energy storage; Chapters 4 and 5 present the construction, programming, and initial operation of both prototypes (Chapter 4), EMS testing oriented to BIPV systems (Chapter 5). Finally, Chapters 6 provides some future lines of investigation that can follow this thesis, and Chapter 7 shows a synopsis of the main conclusions of this work; Resumo: Avanços na integracão de potência fotovoltaica e producão de energia em sistemas práticos Esta tese apresenta avanços na integração de potência e energia fotovoltaica (PV) em sistemas práticos, tais como centrais existentes ou a rede eléctrica pública. This work aims to study the application of Genetic Algorithms in anaerobic digestion modeling, in particular when using dynamical models. Along the work, different types of bioreactors are shown, such as batch, semi-batch and continuous, as well as their mathematical modeling. The work intendeds to estimate the parameter values of two biological reaction model. For that, simulated results, where only one output variable, the produced biogas, is known, are fitted to the model results. For this reason, the problems associated with reverse optimization are studied, using some graphics that provide clues to the sensitivity and identifiability associated with the problem. Particular solutions obtained by the identifiability analysis using GENSSI and DAISY softwares are also presented. Finally, the optimization is performed using genetic algorithms. During this optimization the need to improve the convergence of genetic algorithms was felt. This need has led to the development of an adaptation of the genetic algorithms, which we called Neighbored Genetic Algorithms (NGA1 and NGA2). In order to understand if this new approach overcomes the Basic Genetic Algorithms (BGA) and achieves the proposed goals, a study of 100 full optimization runs for each situation was further developed. Results show that NGA1 and NGA2 are statistically better than BGA. However, because it was not possible to obtain consistent results, the Nealder-Mead method was used, where the initial guesses were the estimated results from GA; Algoritmos Evolucionários para a Modelação de Bioreactores Resumo: Neste trabalho procura-se estudar os algoritmos genéticos com aplicação na modelação da digestão anaeróbia e, em particular, quando se utilizam modelos dinâmicos.
