Bearing capacity of a circular foundation on layered sand-clay media

The bearing capacity of a circular footing lying over fully cohesive strata, with an overlaying sand layer, is computed using the axisymmetric lower bound limit analysis with finite elements and linear optimization. The effects of the thickness and the internal friction angle of the sand are examined for different combinations of c(u)/(gamma b) and q, where c(u)=the undrained shear strength of the cohesive strata, gamma=the unit weight of either layer, b=the footing radius, and q=the surcharge pressure. The results are given in the form of a ratio (eta) of the bearing capacity with an overlaying sand layer to that for a footing lying directly over clayey strata. An overlaying medium dense to dense sand layer considerably improves the bearing capacity. The improvement continuously increases with decreases in c(u)/(gamma b) and increases in phi and q/(gamma b). A certain optimum thickness of the sand layer exists beyond which no further improvement occurs. This optimum thickness increases with an increase in 0 and q and with a decrease in c(u)/(gamma b). Steady Patterns of Microparticles Formed by Optical Tweezers

In this paper, we propose a method for forming steady patterns of microparticles in a dispersion using optical tweezers. We demonstrate how to control the congregation of particles in a dispersion and to manually fabricate a pattern, The steady pattern (nay be useful for in-depth research, and the method will have applications in biology and nanotechnology.

Finalmente la apertura de perspectivas críticas permitirá prolongar su pensamiento en preocupaciones actuales.

Whales, dolphins, and porpoises of the eastern North Pacific and adjacent Arctic waters: a guide to their identification

This is an identification guide for cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises), that was designed to assist laymen in identifying cetaceans encountered in eastern North Pacific and Arctic waters. It was intended for use by ongoing cetacean observer programs. This is a revision of an earlier guide with the same title published in 1972 by the Naval Undersa Center and the National Marine Fisheries Service. It includes sections on identifying cetaceans at sea as well as stranded animals on shore. Species accounts are divided by body size and presence or lack of a dorsal fin. Appendices include illustrations of tags on whales, dolphins, and porpoises, by Larry Hobbs; how to record data from observed cetaceans at sea and for stranded cetaceans; and a list of cetacean names in Japanese and Russian. The economic contribution of whalewatching to regional economies: Perspectives from two National Marine Sanctuaries

Whenever human beings have looked out on the sea, they have seen whales. First from the shore and later from ships when humanity entered the ocean realm as seafarers, we have responded to seeing these creatures with awe and wonder. Even when we hunted whales, a period well chronicled both in history and in literature, the sight of a whale brought an adrenaline rush that was not totally linked to potential economic gain. The first trips on boats specifically to watch, rather than hunt, whales began around 45 years ago in Southern California where the migrating gray whales, seen in the distance from land, drew vessels out for a closer look. Since that time whalewatching has boomed, currently conducted in over 40 countries around the world, including Antarctica, and estimated by economists at the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society to have a 1999 worldwide economic value of around $800 million USD. The economic contribution to local coastal communities is particularly significant in developing countries and those where declining fish populations (and in some cases like the Japanese, international bans on whaling) have driven harvesters to look for viable alternatives. Clearly, whalewatching is now, in many places around the world, a small but thriving part of the regional economy. Like in the days of whaling, we still get the rush, but for some, money is back contributing to the physiological response. (PDF contains 90 pages.)
