Monomers of methacrylate with various pi -conjugated pendants were designed and prepared in our laboratory, The monomer with suitable end-group was successfully assembled with nano-scale inorganic particles to form an orderly-aligned structure that showed special optical properties, both absorption and emission band were much red-shifted compared with the monomer, A new type of organic/inorganic hybrid materials was obtained by in situ polymerization of the assembly, The hybrid materials could also show special optical properties as the assembly, This might open a new route to tune the emission color.

We investigate high-field ferromagnetic resonance of superparamagnetic particles with uniaxial anisotropy, In this case, since the field is large enough to saturate the magnetization, the thermal orientational fluctuations of the magnetic moment of the particle are negligible. Thus, we derive the dynamic susceptibility of the system on the basis of an independent particle model. High-field ferromagnetic resonance has been performed on fine cobalt particles, The analysis of the spectra obtained at different frequencies allows us to estimate the effective magnetic anisotropy, the gyromagnetic ratio, and the transverse relaxation time. By realizing in thin films a tensile stress state, superconductivity of 13 K was introduced into FeTe, a nonsuperconducting parent compound of the iron pnictides and chalcogenides, with a transition temperature higher than that of its superconducting isostructural counterpart FeSe. For these tensile stressed films, superconductivity is accompanied by a softening of the first-order magnetic and structural phase transition, and also, the in-plane extension and out-of-plane contraction are universal in all FeTe films independent of the sign of the lattice mismatch, either positive or negative. Moreover, the correlations were found to exist between the transition temperatures and the tetrahedra bond angles in these thin films.

Chemical-looping reforming (CLR) is a technology that can be used for partial oxidation and steam reforming of hydrocarbon fuels. It involves the use of a metal oxide as an oxygen carrier, which transfers oxygen from combustion air to the fuel. Composite oxygen carriers of cerium oxide added with Fe, Cu, and Mn oxides were prepared by co-precipitation and investigated in a thermogravimetric analyzer and a fixed-bed reactor using methane as fuel and air as oxidizing gas. It was revealed that the addition of transition-metal oxides into cerium oxide can improve the reactivity of the Ce-based oxygen carrier. The three kinds of mixed oxides showed high CO and H-2 selectivity at above 800 degrees C. As for the Ce-Fe-O oxygen carrier, methane was converted to synthesis gas at a H-2/CO molar ratio close to 2:1 at a temperature of 800-900 degrees C; however, the methane thermolysis reaction was found on Ce-Cu-O and Ce-Mn-O oxygen carriers at 850-900 degrees C. Among the three kinds of oxygen carriers, Ce-Fe-O presented the best performance for methane CLR. On Ce-Fe-O oxygen carriers, the CO and H-2 selectivity decreased as the Fe content increased in the carrier particles. An optimal range of the Ce/Fe molar ratio is Ce/Fe > 1 for Ce-Fe-O oxygen carriers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that the microstructure of the Ce-Fe-O oxides was not dramatically changed before and after 20 cyclic reactions. A small amount of Fe3C was found in the reacted Ce-Fe-O oxides by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis.

A modified T-matrix method is presented to compute the scattered fields of various realistically shaped particles; then the radiation forces on the particles can be calculated via the Maxwell stress tenser integral. Numerical results of transverse trapping efficiencies of a focused Gaussian beam on ellipsoidal and spherical particles with the same volume are compared, which show that the shape and orientation of particles affect the maximal transverse trapping force and the displacement corresponding to the maximum. The effect of the polarization direction of the incident beam on the transverse trapping forces is also revealed. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

A radially polarized beam focused by a high-numerical-aperture (NA) objective has a strong longitudinal and nonpropagating electric field in the focal region, which implies that it is suitable for axial optical trapping. In this paper, we use the vectorial diffraction integral to represent the field distribution of the radially polarized beam focused by a high-NA objective and then employ the T-matrix method to compute the radiation forces on spherical particles. Effects of different parameters, such as the size of the sphere, the inner radius of the radially polarized beam, and the NA of the objective, on the radiation forces are presented.

Azimuthally polarized beams, focused by a high-numerical-aperture (NA) objective lens, form a hollow intensity distribution near the focus, which is appropriate for trapping low-refractive-index particles, in contrast to common linearly polarized or radially polarized beams. In this paper, the field distribution of the azimuthally polarized beam focused by a high-NA objective is described by the vectorial diffraction integral, and then the radiation forces on spherical particles with different parameters such as radius and refractive index are calculated by the T-matrix method. Numerical results show that the azimuthally polarized beam not only can steadily trap low-refractive-index particles at the focus center but also can trap multiple high-refractive-index particles around the focus center by virtue of the hollow-ring configuration. The range of the sizes of low-refractive-index particles that can be trapped steadily are presented, corresponding to different parameters such as the NA of the objective and the relative refractive index, based on which the NA of the objective can be selected to trap the appropriate size of particles. The electronic and magnetic structures of Nd2Fe17 and Nd2Fe17N3 have been calculated using the first-principle, spin-polarized orthogonalized linear combination of atomic orbitals method. Comparative studies of the two materials reveal important effects of the nitrogen atoms (at 9e site) on the electronic and magnetic structures. Results are presented for the total density of states, site-projected partial density of states and the spin magnetic moments on four nonequivalent Fe sites. The highest magnetic moments are found to be located on the 6c site for Nd2Fe17 and on the 9d site for Nd2Fe17N3, in agreement with the neutron and Mossbauer experiments. The variation trends of the magnetic moments on different Fe sites are discussed in terms of the separation between Fe and N atoms. Compared with Nd2Fe17, an increase in the exchange splitting of the Fe d band is found in Nd2Fe17N3, which accounts for its higher Curie temperature as observed in experiments. The calculated results show that the nitrogen atoms are charge acceptors in these compounds.

The microstructures in iron- and sulphur-doped InP crystals were studied using both electron microscopy and electron diffraction. A modulated structure has been found in S-doped InP crystal, where the commensurate modulations corresponded to periodicities of 0.68 nm and 0.7 nm in real space and were related to the reflections of the cubic lattice in [111] and [113BAR] directions; they were indexed as q111* = 1/2(a* + b* + c*) and q113BAR* = 1/4(-a* - b* + 3c*), respectively. Single atomic layers of iron precipitate were observed, with preferred orientations along which precipitates are formed. Simulated calculations by means of the dynamical theory of electron diffraction using models for the precipitate structure were in good agreement with our experimental results. The relation between the modulated structure and the precipitates is also discussed.

After illumination with 1-1.3 eV photons during cooling-down, metastable PH modes are observed by IR absorption at 5 K in semi-insulating InP:Fe. They correlate with the photo-injection of holes, but not with a change of the charge state of the K-related centres present at equilibrium. They are explained by a change of the bonding of H, induced by hole trapping, from IR-inactive centres to PH-containing centres, stable only below 80 K. One metastable centre has well-defined geometrical parameters and the other one could be located in a region near from the interface with (Fe,P) precipitates.

This paper presents a detailed PL study of Fe2+ related four zero-phonon(ZP) lines and their related phonon sidebands. Four zero-phonon transitions at approximate to 2800 cm(-1) along with the accompanying phonon sidebands extending down to 2400 cm(-1). There are ta two prominent regions in the phonon sidebands. One is ascribed to coupling to acoustic-type phonons (2700 cm(-1) region), the other is due to coupling to optic-type phonons (2500 cm(-1) region). Beside broad coupling with lattice modes, there are several groups of lines. They are ascribed to resonant modes, impurities induced gap modes and local modes.
