The global prevalence of diabetic nephropathy is rising in parallel with the increasing incidence of diabetes in most countries. Unfortunately, up to 40 % of persons diagnosed with diabetes may develop kidney complications. Diabetic nephropathy is associated with substantially increased risks of cardiovascular disease and premature mortality. An inherited susceptibility to diabetic nephropathy exists, and progress is being made unravelling the genetic basis for nephropathy thanks to international research collaborations, shared biological resources and new analytical approaches. Multiple epidemiological studies have highlighted the clinical heterogeneity of nephropathy and the need for better phenotyping to help define important subgroups for analysis and increase the power of genetic studies. Collaborative genome-wide association studies for nephropathy have reported unique genes, highlighted novel biological pathways and suggested new disease mechanisms, but progress towards clinically relevant risk prediction models for diabetic nephropathy has been slow. This review summarises the current status, recent developments and ongoing challenges elucidating the genetics of diabetic nephropathy.

The Antrim Coast Road stretching from the seaport of Larne in the East of Northern Ireland has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the most spectacular roads in Europe (Day, 2006). However the problematic geology; Jurassic Lias Clay and Triassic Mudstone overlain by Cretaceous Limestone and Tertiary Basalt, and environmental variables result in frequent instances of slope instability manifested in both shallow debris flows and occasional massive rotational movements, creating a geotechnical risk to this highway. This paper describes how a variety of techniques are being used to both assess instability and monitor movement of these active slopes near one site at Straidkilly Point, Glenarm. An in-depth understanding of the geology was obtained via boreholes, resistivity surveys and laboratory testing. Environmental variables recorded by an on-site weather station were correlated with measured pore water pressure and soil moisture infiltration data. Terrestrial LiDAR (TLS), with surveys carried out on a bi-monthly basis allowed for the generation of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) of difference, highlighting areas of recent movement, accumulation and depletion. Morphology parameters were generated from the DEMs and include slope, curvature and multiple measures of roughness. Changes in the structure of the slope coupled with morphological parameters were characterised and linked to progressive failures from the temporal monitoring. In addition to TLS monitoring, Aerial LiDAR datasets were used for the spatio-morphological characterisation of the slope on a macro scale. A Differential Global Positioning System (dGPS) was also deployed on site to provide a real-time warning system for gross movements, which were also correlated with environmental conditions. Frequent electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys were also implemented to provide a better understanding of long-term changes in soil moisture and help to define the complex geology. The paper describes how the data obtained via a diverse range of methods has been combined to facilitate a more informed management regime of geotechnical risk by the Northern Ireland Roads Service.

In recent years, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems have been developed to monitor bridge deterioration, assess real load levels and hence extend bridge life and safety. A road bridge is only safe if the stresses caused by the passing vehicles are less than the capacity of the bridge to resist them. Conventional SHM systems can be used to improve knowledge of the bridges capacity to resist stresses but generally give no information on the causes of any increase in stresses (based on measuring strain). The concept of in Bridge Weigh-in-Motion (B-WIM) is to establish axle loads, without interruption to traffic flow, by using strain sensors at a bridge soffit and subsequently converting the data to real time axle loads or stresses. Recent studies have shown it would be most beneficial to develop a portable system which can be easily attached to existing and new bridge structures for a specified monitoring period. The sensors could then be left in place while the data acquisition can be moved for various other sites. Therefore it is necessary to find accurate sensors capable of capturing peak strains under dynamic load and suitable methods for attaching these strain sensors to existing and new bridge structures. Additionally, it is important to ensure accurate strain transfer between concrete and steel, the adhesives layer and the strain sensor. This paper describes research investigating the suitably of using various sensors for the monitoring of concrete structures under dynamic vehicle load. Electrical resistance strain (ERS) gauges, vibrating wire (VW) gauges and fibre optic sensors (FOS) are commonly used for SHM. A comparative study will be carried out to select a suitable sensor for a bridge Weigh in Motion System. This study will look at fixing methods, durability, scanning rate and accuracy range. Finite element modeling is used to predict the strains which are then validated in laboratory trials.

The importance of student’s engagement has been recently pointed out in research. However, there has been a lack of engagement assessment instrument, pertaining psychometric qualities. Objective: This paper presents the Portuguese adaptation of the “Student’s Engagement in School International Scale” (SESIS), drawn up from a12 countries international study (Lam et al., 2012; Lam et al., in press). Method: Psychometric properties of this scale were examined with data from 685 students from different grades (6th, 7th, 9th and 10th), from both sexes, and different regions of the country. Results: Factorial analysis of the results, with varimax rotation, lead to three different factors which explain 50.88% of the variance. The scale integrates the original 33 items, and cognitive, affective and behavioural dimensions. For the external validity study, the relationship between student’s engagement in school results and other school variables — academic performance, self-concept — was considered, and significant relations were observed, as expected. Conclusion: The data presented highlights the qualities of SESIS, as well as its usefulness for research purposes. The Portuguese Association of Automatic Control (APCA) organizes, every two years, the Portuguese Conference on Automatic Control. Its 6th edition (Controlo 2004) was held from 7 to 9 June, 2004 at the University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal, by its Centre for Intelligent Systems (CSI). CONTROLO 2004 International Program Committee (IPC) has decided, from the very start, to ask for submission of full draft papers, to encourage special sessions with well-defined themes, and for student papers. All papers have been reviewed by three separate reviewers. From the 122 contributions submitted, the IPC selected 89 oral papers, 20 special session papers, and 5 student posters. CONTROLO 2004 Technical Programme consists of 33 oral sessions (5 being special sessions) and 1 poster session, covering a broad range of control topics, both from theory and applications. The programme also includes three plenary lectures, given by leading experts in the field, Professors Ricardo Sanz, João Miranda Lemos and Rolf Isermann.

The objective of our research was to analyse the relevant logistic factors influencing energy efficiency in road freight transport, while quantifying the potential for CO2 reduction. We carried out a survey and linked fuel consumption to transport performance parameters in 50 German haulage companies during 2003. Efficiency ranges from 0.8 tkm to 26 tkm for 1 kg CO2 emissions. The results show a high potential for improvements, given a low level of efficiency in vehicle usage and load factor, scarce use of lightweight vehicle design, incorrectly selected vehicle class and a high proportion of empty runs. Efficiency measures are poorly applied.

A world-class research community in the subject of remote and virtual laboratories joined the event.

El trabajo que se presenta a continuación muestra a grandes rasgos cómo se han desarrollado las relaciones comerciales entre Colombia e Indonesia desde sus inicios hasta la actualidad y qué nuevas oportunidades se pueden presentar para potencializar en mayor medida el comercio bilateral entre las dos naciones. De acuerdo a lo anterior, el desarrollo del trabajo parte en primer lugar de un análisis económico, social y del comercio tanto de Colombia como de Indonesia, en donde se estudian diferentes indicadores que muestran en qué nivel se encuentra cada país en estos aspectos y como es su comercio desde y hacia el mundo. En segundo lugar, se presenta un enfoque en el desarrollo del comercio bilateral, en donde se comienza a evidenciar las posibles nuevas oportunidades de intercambio entre los dos países, posteriormente se realiza un estudio del macro ambiente de cada país, el cual permite hacer un análisis de riesgo país, que arroja temas a tener en cuenta al momento de establecer una relación comercial y económica que permita evidenciar el riesgo que representa una nación para la otra. Por último, se realiza un DOFA con su matriz, de la cual surgen una serie de estrategias para aprovechar las nuevas oportunidades de intercambio comercial que se pudieron evidenciar durante todo el trabajo.

Este trabajo explica las razones por las cuales China se estrecha sus vinculos con Afirca. El tema principal es el inicio de la relacion sino-sudanesa y la evolucion de esta hasta el fin de la guerra civil en Sudan.
