Chapter 8 HPV vaccines

Vaccines to prevent infection with high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPV) will help protect women against cervical cancer, and some are likely to be available within the next year. One vaccine, a quadrivalent vaccine against HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18 and known as Garadsil ©(Merck &Co., Inc), was approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for the prevention of cervical cancer, cervical cancer precursors and vulval and vaginal cancer precursors associated with HPV 16 and 18 in June 2006. In addition, the vaccine has been approved for the prevention of genital warts and low grade cervical lesions e.g. cervical intraepithelial neoplasia1. The main vaccines components are recombinant viral capsid proteins assembled into virus-like particles and alum-based adjuvants. If given before HPV infection, the vaccines, which induce HPV type-specific, virus-neutralizing antibodies, have proven safe and highly effective at preventing HPV infection and its clinical consequences, including high-grade cervical lesions. Their use should not immediately alter existing screening programs for cervical cancer, however. Because they incorporate only the 2 HPV types most commonly associated with cervical cancer (HPV-16 and HPV-18), they can only prevent about 70% of cervical cancers. Vaccines to treat existing HPV infection are under development but are unlikely to become clinically available in the near future.

Australia's national suicide prevention strategy: the next chapter - Commentary

Australia's National Suicide Prevention Strategy (NSPS) is about to move into a new funding phase. In this context this paper considers the emphasis of the NSPS since its inception in 1999. Certain high-risk groups (particularly people with mental illness and people who have self-harmed) have been relatively neglected, and some promising approaches (particularly selective and indicated interventions) have been under-emphasised. This balance should be re-dressed and the opportunity should be taken to build the evidence-base regarding suicide prevention. Such steps have the potential to maximise the impact of suicide prevention activities in Australia.

British employers and the Social Chapter:some survey evidences

This note reports the results of a survey of firms operating in Britain concerning the impact on their costs and operations of the Social Action Programme. We find that the realised and anticipated adverse impacts of the legislation are rather limited, although both do appear to be greater for firms which are relatively large, skill intensive, and which have a substantial amount of trade with other EU countries. In particular, the survey results provide little evidence to suggest that the imposition of a minimum wage of £3.50 per hour would have a substantial adverse impact on employment. Evidence does, however, suggest that firms which pay relatively low wages are likely to be affected more than others by the legislation.

Chapter 1 : nucleobases with designed patterns of hydrogen bonding

The chemistry used in key bond-forming steps to prepare nucleobases with designed patterns of hydrogen bonding is surveyed. Incorporation of the nucleobases into DNA and RNA oligomers is achieved either chemically using building blocks such as nucleoside phosphoramidites or enzymatically using nucleotide triphosphates. By varying the hydrogen bonding pattern within nucleobases, and by incorporating additional substituents, new structures have been designed that "reach over" so that contacts with both strands in targeted duplex DNA can be made in antigene strategies to control gene expression. Various new base-pairing systems have been evaluated that expand the genetic alphabet beyond Watson-Crick base pairs A.T and G.C. For example, benzo-homologated analogs of the natural DNA bases represent a new genetic set of orthogonal, size-expanded derivatives that have been shown to encode amino acids of a protein in a living organism.

Discrete time models of the term structure of interest rates and interest rate contingent claims

In this study, discrete time one-factor models of the term structure of interest rates and their application to the pricing of interest rate contingent claims are examined theoretically and empirically. The first chapter provides a discussion of the issues involved in the pricing of interest rate contingent claims and a description of the Ho and Lee (1986), Maloney and Byrne (1989), and Black, Derman, and Toy (1990) discrete time models. In the second chapter, a general discrete time model of the term structure from which the Ho and Lee, Maloney and Byrne, and Black, Derman, and Toy models can all be obtained is presented. The general model also provides for the specification of an additional model, the ExtendedMB model. The third chapter illustrates the application of the discrete time models to the pricing of a variety of interest rate contingent claims. In the final chapter, the performance of the Ho and Lee, Black, Derman, and Toy, and ExtendedMB models in the pricing of Eurodollar futures options is investigated empirically. The results indicate that the Black, Derman, and Toy and ExtendedMB models outperform the Ho and Lee model. Little difference in the performance of the Black, Derman, and Toy and ExtendedMB models is detected. ^

Doctrine and Tradition in Benjamin's early Thought : A relegated Chapter in the Study of his Reception of Kant

En el presente trabajo indagamos el significado de los conceptos de "doctrina" y "tradición" en las reflexiones de Benjamin hacia 1917, íntimamente vinculados con su recepción de Kant. Los escasos análisis de tal recepción relegan este aspecto. Intentamos mostrar que estos conceptos expresan un interés por la idea kantiana de unidad sistemática del conocimiento, y sostenemos que Benjamin reinterpreta tal unidad en términos mesiánicos: ya no como un supuesto necesario, sino como una exigencia de redención.
