Retail banking is facing many challenges, not least the loss of its customers' trust and loyalty. The economic crisis is forcing banks to examine their relationships with stakeholders and to offer greater reassurance that their brand promises will be delivered. More than ever, banks need to stand for something positive and valued by stakeholders. One way to achieve this is through paying more attention to brand values. Our article explores how values are adopted by employees within a bank. When employees 'live' their brand's values, their behaviour during customer interactions reflects this, encouraging the strengthening of customer relationships. Specifically, we test the relationship between leadership style, employee commitment, and the adoption of values. Data was collected from a survey of 438 branch employees in a leading Irish retail bank. The study found that a structured and directive leadership style was effective at encouraging the adoption of the bank's values. Moreover, when employees are committed to the organisation, this has a significant impact on their adoption of values. Thus, this study supports the literature which suggests that leadership and commitment are prerequisites for values adoption. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

This paper contributes to the prosocial service behavior (PSB) literature by developing and testing a conceptual framework to investigate the mediating mechanisms underlying the relationships between internal communication and PSBs. Data collected from front-line employees (FLEs) in a UK based service organization was used to test our conceptual framework. Our findings demonstrate that FLE perceptions of internal communication practices influence their role stress and organizational commitment, which, in turn, influence their PSBs. The results highlight the significance of studying role stress and organizational commitment as mediators in the relationship between internal communication and PSBs. The limitations of the study are then sketched, and suggestions for future research are also provided.

A szerzők a Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem Vezetéstudományi Intézetében számos vezetőképző program, posztgraduális kurzus és mesterképzés hallgatóinak részvételével végeztek feltáró jellegű kutatásokat a munkahelyi motiváció elméletének és gyakorlatának témájában. A résztvevők saját élményeikből és tapasztalataikból kiindulva sorolták be a megélt eseteket a herzbergi kategóriákba. Ezek alapjában véve megerősítették Herzberg motivátorokról és higiénés tényezőkről alkotott elképzeléseit. Nem egyértelmű ugyanakkor, hogy kikre is érvényesek Herzberg tézisei. Az eddigi mintákba ugyanis általában azok kerültek, akik vagy már vezető pozíciókban voltak, vagy erre készültek, azaz alapvetően a „vezetői motivációkkal” bíró emberek motivációs, illetve higiénés tényezőire kaptak eddig rálátást. De vajon mi a helyzet azokkal, akik a szervezeti hierarchia más szintjein helyezkednek el? Elméleti és gyakorlati szempontból egyaránt releváns kérdés, hogy az eredeti elmélet érvényességét hogyan lehetne kimondottan beosztottakon megvizsgálni, itt és most? A szerzők írásukban ezekre a kérdésekre keresik a választ: az eredeti modellt egy kérdőíves és interjús módszertanra épülő kutatás eredményein értelmezik (illetve értelmezik újra) és igyekeznek pontosítani Herzberg elméletének mai mondanivalóit. / === / The authors have created exploratory researches in the theory and practice of the workplace motivation with the participation of mba, postgraduate and master students in the institute of management of corvinus university of budapest. The participants were classified their lived cases into categories of Herzberg starting from own experiences. These basically confirmed Herzberg’s visions from motivators and hygiene factors. In this study the authors search motivations of employees based on Herzberg’s categories. The original model is interpreted the results of a questionnaire and an interview-based methodology, and the authors try to clarify the contemporary meanings of Herzberg’s theory.

Napjaink munkaerőpiaci tendenciái következtében egyre több figyelem irányul az atipikus munkavégzésre. Az atipikus munkavégzésben rejlő lehetőségeket a munkavállalók oldaláról vizsgáltuk. Ennek érdekében egy kétfázisú kutatássorozatot hajtottuk végre a Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem hallgatói körében. A felmérés rámutatott arra, hogy az egyetemi hallgatók már az egyetemi tanulmányaik alatt is potenciális munkaerőt jelentenek. Foglalkoztatásuk során a legfontosabb tényező a rugalmas, tanulmányokkal összeegyeztethető munkavégzés. A második kutatás fő célja a teljes életcikluson keresztüli munkavállalói preferenciák feltárása volt. A hallgatók által a két leginkább előnybe részesített munkavállalási forma a napi nyolcórás munkaviszony rugalmas munkaidőben és a saját vállalkozás indítása. A hallgatók elsősorban magas jövedelmet, ezt követően stabil, biztos jövedelmet, fejlődési lehetőséget, és a munka és magánélet egyensúlyát várják el munkahelyüktől. A tanulmány rámutat az egyes alcsoportok különbségeire, illetve kiindulópontot jelenthet további kutatásokhoz. _____ More and more attention is paid to atypical work due to workplace trends. Increasing opportunities deriving from atypical work have been investigated from employees’ viewpoint in this paper. We conducted a two-step survey amongst graduates and undergraduates of Corvinus University of Budapest. The survey pointed out that undergraduates are potential workers as well, and the most important factor for them was the flexible form of work. The second survey aimed to explore employees’ preferences through a whole lifetime period. The two most popular forms of work were flexible full-time jobs and starting their own enterprise. Students prefer high salaries, a stable and secure income, opportunities for development and work-life balance. The surveys pointed out some differences between subgroups and their conclusions could be a starting point for future research.

What is the connection between the hotel and fashion industry? The authors aim to answer this question approaching from different aspects. It can be stated that both of these industries are harmful for the environment from the point of sustainability. On the other hand there is a common solution from the viewpoint of sustainability: the uniforms and the primary materials, which are used during the production, such as the man-made and natural fibres. In our research the authors introduce the main problems which are related to the fashion industry, especially focusing on producing fibres from the viewpoint of sustainability. We introduce the solution for the fashion industry based on the literature and also present the emerging problems and solutions of the hotel industry based on the best practices. As a part of it, we are introducing the best practices from the hotel industry, where environmentally friendly uniforms are used. Finally, as a primary research part of our paper, we interpret the results of a Hungarian case-study.

The primary objectives of this study were to describe the relationship that U.S. hotel companies have with travel agency companies and to identify the determinants of a successful relationship.^ The unit of analysis was hotel companies operating in U.S. One hundred and three hotel companies contributed information for this research. The data were collected through a questionnaire developed from previous empirical studies and from interviews with hospitality management professors and hotel sales and marketing directors.^ Simple and multiple regression analyses indicated that in order to have successful relationships with travel agency companies, hotel companies should (a) show more commitment or dedication to working with the travel agents, (b) have more trust in the travel agents themselves, and (c) be less dependent on any one travel agent for their business.^ Additionally, the results suggest that hotel companies who coordinate activities with travel agents companies and who communicate with them in a timely, accurate, adequate, complete and credible manner have more successful interorganizational relationships than those who do not.^ Furthermore, hotel companies who share proprietary sales and any other information with travel agents reported better relationships. This study examined Kirkpatrick’s training evaluation model (Kirkpatrick & Kirkpatrick, 2006) by assessing a sales training program conducted at an organization in the hospitality industry. The study assessed the employees’ training outcomes of knowledge and skills, job performance, and the impact of the training upon the organization. By assessing these training outcomes and their relationships, the study demonstrated whether Kirkpatrick’s theories are supported and the lower evaluation levels can be used to predict organizational impact. The population for this study was a group of reservations sales agents from a leading luxury hotel chain’s reservations center. During the study period from January 2005 to May 2007, there were 335 reservations sales agents employed in this Global Reservations Center (GRC). The number of reservations sales agents who had completed a sales training program/intervention during this period and had data available for at least two months pre and post training composed the sample for this study. The number of agents was 69 ( N = 69). Four hypotheses were tested through paired-samples t tests, correlation, and hierarchical regression analytic procedures. Results from the analyses supported the hypotheses in this study. The significant improvement in the call score supported hypothesis one that the reservations sales agents who completed the training improved their knowledge of content and required skills in handling calls (Level 2). Hypothesis two was accepted in part as there was significant improvement in call conversion, but there was no significant improvement of time usage. The significant improvement in the sales per call supported hypothesis three that the reservations agents who completed the training contributed to increased organizational impact (Level 4), i.e., made significantly more sales. Last, findings supported hypothesis four that Level 2 and Level 3 variables can be used for predicting Level 4 organizational impact. The findings supported the theory of Kirkpatrick’s evaluation model that in order to expect organizational results, a positive change in behavior (job performance) and learning must occur. The examinations of Levels 2 and 3 helped to partially explain and predict Level 4 results.

A global corporation values both profitability and social acceptance; its units mutually negotiate governance and represent a highly interdependent network where centers of excellence and high-potential employees are identified regardless of geographic locations. These companies try to build geocentric, or “world oriented” (Marquardt, 1999, p. 20), organizational cultures. Such culture “transcends cultural differences and establishes ‘beacons’ – values and attitudes – that are comprehensive and compelling” (Kets de Vries & Florent-Treacy, 2002, p. 299) for all employees, regardless of their national origins. Creating a geocentric organizational culture involves transforming each employee’s mindset, beliefs, and behaviors so that he/she can become “a world citizen in spite of having a national identity” (Marquardt, 1999, p. 47). The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how employees with different national identities experience a geocentric organizational culture of a global corporation. Phenomenological research aims to understand “how people experience some phenomenon—how they perceive it, describe it, feel about it, judge it, remember it, make sense of it, and talk about it with others” (Patton, 2002, p. 104). Twelve participants were selected using criteria, convenience, and snow-ball sampling strategies. A semi-structured interview guide was used to collect data. Data were analyzed inductively, using Moustakas’s (1994) Modification of the Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen Method of Analysis of Phenomenological Data. The participants in this study experienced a geocentric organizational culture of a global corporation as on in which they felt connected, valued, and growing personally and professionally. The participants felt connected to the companies via business goals and social responsibility. The participants felt valued by the company because their creativity was welcomed and they could contribute to the corporation certain unique knowledge of the culture and language of their native countries. The participants felt growing personally and professionally due to the professional development opportunities, cross-cultural awareness, and perspective consciousness. Based on the findings from this study, a model of a geocentric organizational culture of a global corporation: An employee perspective is proposed. Implications for research and practice conclude this study.

This exploratory empirical phenomological study looks at employee engagement using Kahn (1990) and Maslow’s (1970) motivational theories to understand the experience of non-salaried employees. This study finds four themes that seem to affect employee engagement: work environment, employee’s supervisor, individual characteristics of the employee, and opportunity for learning.

The author reports the results of an exploratory study concerning the importance placed on attributes of hotel selection by Japanese and American guests and cultural differences between these two groups, which represent the largest market for Korean international tourist hotels. The findings suggest that Hofstede's (1960) four dimensions of cultural values can be used to help marketers better understand their guest's hotel selection criteria.

As the hotel industry grows more competitive, quality guest service becomes an increasingly important part of managers' responsibility measuring the quality of service delivery is facilitated when managers know what types of assessment methods are available to them. The authors present and discuss the following available measurement techniques and describe the situations where they best meet the needs of hotel managers: management observation, employee feedback programs, comment cards, mailed surveys, personal and telephone interviews, focus groups, and mystery shopping.
