Here we present the catalytic hydrogenation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to less toxic mixtures of saturated and partial unsaturated polycyclic hydrocarbons under mild reaction conditions using a magnetically recoverable rhodium catalyst and molecular hydrogen as the exclusive H source. The catalyst is easily recovered after each reaction by placing a permanent magnet on the reactor wall and it can be reused in successive runs without any significant loss of catalytic activity. As an example, anthracene was totally converted into the saturated polycyclic hydrocarbon form (ca. 60%) and the partially hydrogenated form, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydroanthracene (ca. 40%). The catalyst operates in a broad range of temperature and H(2) pressure in both organic and aqueous/organic solutions of anthracene and it also exhibits significant activity at low substrate concentrations (20 ppm). This can be an efficient recycling process for hydrogenation of PAHs present in contaminated fluid waste streams. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Despite being one of the most important antioxidant defenses, Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (Sod1) has been frequently associated with harmful effects, including neurotoxicity. This toxicity has been attributed to immature forms of Sod1 and extraneous catalytic activities. Among these, the ability of Sod1 to function as a peroxidase may be particularly relevant because it is increased in bicarbonate buffer and produces the reactive carbonate radical. Despite many studies, how this radical forms remains unknown. To address this question, we systematically studied hSod1 peroxidase activity in the presence of nitrite, formate, and bicarbonate-carbon dioxide. Kinetic analyses of hydrogen peroxide consumption and of nitrite, formate, and bicarbonate-carbon dioxide oxidation showed that the Sod1-bound hydroxyl-like oxidant functions in the presence of nitrite and formate. In the presence of bicarbonate-carbon dioxide, this oxidant is replaced by peroxymonocarbonate, which is then reduced to the carbonate radical. Peroxymonocarbonate intermediacy was evidenced by (13)C NMR experiments showing line broadening of its peak in the presence of Zn,ZnSod1. In agreement, peroxymonocarbonate was docked into the hSod1 active site, where it interacted with the conserved Arg(143). Also, a reaction between peroxymonocarbonate and Cu(I)Sod1 was demonstrated by stopped-flow experiments. Kinetic simulations indicated that peroxymonocarbonate is produced during Sod1 turnover and not in bulk solution. In the presence of bicarbonate-carbon dioxide, sustained hSod1-mediated oxidations occurred with low steady-state concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (4-10 mu M). Thus, carbonate radical formation through peroxymonocarbonate may be a key event in Sod1-induced toxicity.

The hydrolysis reaction mechanism of phosphite antioxidants is investigated by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS). The phosphites were chosen because they differed in chemical structure and phosphorus content. Dopant assisted-atmospheric pressure photoionization (DA-APPI) is chosen as the ion source for (lie ionization of the compounds. [it our previous work, DA-APPI was shown to offer an attractive alternative to atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) since it provided background-ion free mass spectra and higher sensitivity [M. Papanastasiou, et al., Polymer Degradation and Stability 91 (11) (2006) 2675-2682]. In positive ion mode, the molecules are generally detected in their protonated form. In negative ion mode, the phosphites are unstable and only fragment ions are observed: these however, are characteristic of each phosphite and may be used for the identification of the analytes in complex mixtures. The analytes under investigation are exposed to accelerated humid ageing conditions and their hydrolytic pathway and stability is investigated. Different substituents around the phosphorus atom are shown to have a significant effect on the stability of the phosphites, with phenol substituents producing very hydrolytically stable structures. Alkanox P24 and PEP-36 follow a similar hydrolytic pathway via the scission of the first and then the second P-O-phenol bonds, eventually leading to the formation of phenol, Phosphorous acid and pentaerythritol as end products. HP-10 exhibits a rather different Structure and the products detected suggest scission of either the P-O-hydrocarbon or one of the P-O-phenol bonds. A phenomenon similar to that of autocatalysis is observed for all phosphites and is attributed to the formation of dialkyl phosphites as intermediate products. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. The performance of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) operating on a simulated hydrocarbon reformate is described. The anode feed stream consisted of 80% H(2),similar to 20% N(2), and 8 ppm hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S). Cell performance losses are calculated by evaluating cell potential reduction due to H(2)S contamination through lifetime tests. It is found that potential, or power, loss under this condition is a result of platinum surface contamination with elemental sulfur. Electrochemical mass spectroscopy (EMS) and electrochemical techniques are employed, in order to show that elemental sulfur is adsorbed onto platinum, and that sulfur dioxide is one of the oxidation products. Moreover, it is demonstrated that a possible approach for mitigating H(2)S poisoning on the PEMFC anode catalyst is to inject low levels of air into the H(2)S-contaminated anode feeding stream. In this study, gaseous emissions and particles are measured during start-up and stop periods for an over-fed boiler and an under-fed boiler. Both gaseous and particulate matter emissions are continuously measured in the laboratory. The measurement of gaseous emissions includes oxygen (O2), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide and (NO). The emissions rates are calculated from measured emissions concentrations and flue gas flow. The behaviours of the boilers during start-up and stop periods are analysed and the emissions are characterised in terms of CO, NO, TOC and particles (PM2.5 mass and number). The duration of the characterised periods vary between two boilers due to the difference in type of ignition and combustion control. The under-fed boiler B produces higher emissions during start-up periods than the over-fed boiler A. More hydrocarbon and particles are emitted by the under-fed boiler during stop periods. Accumulated mass of CO and TOC during start-up and stop periods contribute a major portion of the total mass emitted during whole operation. However, accumulated mass of NO and PM during start-up and stop periods are not significant as the duration of emission peak is relatively short.

Emissions from residential combustion appliances vary significantly depending on the firing behaviours and combustion conditions, in addition to combustion technologies and fuel quality. Although wood pellet combustion in residential heating boilers is efficient, the combustion conditions during start-up and stop phases are not optimal and produce significantly high emissions such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon from incomplete combustion. The emissions from the start-up and stop phases of the pellet boilers are not fully taken into account in test methods for ecolabels which primarily focus on emissions during operation on full load and part load. The objective of the thesis is to investigate the emission characteristics during realistic operation of residential wood pellet boilers in order to identify when the major part of the annual emissions occur. Emissions from four residential wood pellet boilers were measured and characterized for three operating phases (start-up, steady and stop). Emissions from realistic operation of combined solar and wood pellet heating systems was continuously measured to investigate the influence of start-up and stop phases on total annual emissions. Measured emission data from the pellet devices were used to build an emission model to predict the annual emission factors from the dynamic operation of the heating system using the simulation software TRNSYS. Start-up emissions are found to vary with ignition type, supply of air and fuel, and time to complete the phase. Stop emissions are influenced by fan operation characteristics and the cleaning routine. Start-up and stop phases under realistic operation conditions contribute 80 – 95% of annual carbon monoxide (CO) emission, 60 – 90% total hydrocarbon (TOC), 10 – 20% of nitrogen oxides (NO), and 30 – 40% particles emissions. Annual emission factors from realistic operation of tested residential heating system with a top fed wood pelt boiler can be between 190 and 400 mg/MJ for the CO emissions, between 60 and 95 mg/MJ for the NO, between 6 and 25 mg/MJ for the TOC, between 30 and 116 mg/MJ for the particulate matter and between 2x10-13 /MJ and 4x10-13 /MJ for the number of particles. If the boiler has the cleaning sequence with compressed air such as in boiler B2, annual CO emission factor can be up to 550 mg/MJ. Average CO, TOC and particles emissions under realistic annual condition were greater than the limits values of two eco labels. These results highlight the importance of start-up and stop phases in annual emission factors (especially CO and TOC). Since a large or dominating part of the annual emissions in real operation arise from the start-up and stop sequences, test methods required by the ecolabels should take these emissions into account. In this way it will encourage the boiler manufacturers to minimize annual emissions. The annual emissions of residential pellet heating system can be reduced by optimizing the number of start-ups of the pellet boiler. It is possible to reduce up to 85% of the number of start-ups by optimizing the system design and its controller such as switching of the boiler pump after it stops, using two temperature sensors for boiler ON/OFF control, optimizing of the positions of the connections to the storage tank, increasing the mixing valve temperature in the boiler circuit and decreasing the pump flow rate. For 85 % reduction of start-ups, 75 % of CO and TOC emission factors were reduced while 13% increase in NO and 15 % increase in particle emissions was observed.

This work presents the progress made towards synthesizing 2-oxo-16-(3', 4'methylenedioxyphenyl)-trans-15-hexadecene, an antimycobacterial compound that was originally isolated from the leaves of Piper Sanctum. The hydrocarbon chain of the molecule was synthesized first by opening a 15-pentadecanolactone ring by means of HI, and performing an E2 elimination reaction on the molecule followed by an organolithium reaction with CH3Li. Hexadec-15-en-2-one that was afforded this way was later reacted with 5-bromobenzo[d][1,3]dioxole following the appropriate Heck reaction protocol that allows for the formation of a palladium catalyzed carbon-carbon bond. The modes of action of 2-oxo-16-(3', 4'-methylenedioxyphenyl)-trans-15hexadecene are comparable to the ones of rifampicin, a marketable drug that has been successfully used in the treatment of tuberculosis in the past. Additionally, this compound can serve as an intermediate towards the synthesis of 2-oxo-16-(3', 4' methylenedioxyphenyl)-hexadecane and 2-oxo-14-(3', 4' -methylenedioxyphenyl) tetradecane, both strong inhibitors of the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Lastly, due to Multi-Drug Resistant tuberculosis, there has been an increasing need to find alternative cures for tuberculosis. Therefore, the work on 2-qxo-16-(3', 4'methylenedioxyphenyl)-trans-15-hexadecene is not only chemically interesting but it is also biologically important.

The ability of macroheterocyclic compounds to complex with ionic species has led to the synthesis and investigation of many multidentate macroheterocyclic species. The most stable complexes are formed between macrocyclic polyetheral ligands (crown ethers) with alkali or alkaline earth metal iona. There is an excellent correlation of the stability of these complexes with the size of the cation and the site of the cavity in the macrocyclic ligand. Additional factors, such as the basicity of the ligand and the solvating ability of the solvent, also play important roles in the stabilization of the complex. The stability of such complexes has been advantageously used to increase anionic reactivity and has been successfully applied to several organic fluorinations, oxidations, and similar reactions. The use of macrocyclic ligands in inorganic syntheses of otherwise difficult to obtain fluoro compounds has not been reported. O-carborane and m-carborane, C2BlOHl2, are icosahedral cage systems derived from Bl2H122- by replacement of BH with the isoelectronic CH group. These stable molecules exhibit electron-deficient bonding which can best be explained by delocalization of electrons. This delocalization gives rise to stability similar to that found in aromatic hydrocarbons. Crown ether activated potassium fluoride has been successfully employed in the conversion of alkyl, acyl and aryl halides to their respective fluorides. Analogously halide substituted carboranes were prepared, but their fluoro-derivatives were not obtained. The application of crown ethers in the synthesis of transition metal complexes is relatively unexplored. The usual synthesis of fluoro-derivative transition metal complexes involves highly reactive and toxic fluorinating agents such as antimony trifluoride, antimony penta fluoride. bromine trifluoride and hydrogen fluoride, An attempted preparation of the hexafluoroosmate (IV) ion via a crown activated, or naked fluoride~was unsuccessful. Potassium hexafluoroosmate (IV), K208F6. was eventually prepared using bromine trifluoride as a fluorinating and oxidizing agent .

Diabetes is a worldwide health issue that has been expanding mainly in developed countries. It is characterized by abnormal levels of blood sugar due to several factors. The most common are resistance to insulin and the production of defective insulin which exerts little or no effect. Its most common symptoms include tissue damage to several systems due to elevated levels of blood sugar. One of the key enzymes in hydrocarbon metabolism is α-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.20). It catalyzes the breakdown of complex carbohydrates into their respective monomers (glucose) which allows them to be absorbed. In this work, caffeoyl quinic acids and their metabolites were analyzed as potential inhibitors for α-glucosidase. The search for the best inhibitor was conducted using molecular docking. The affinity of each compound was compared to the inhibitor present in the crystal structure of the protein. As no inhibitor with a similar affinity was´found, a new approach was used, in situ drug design. It was not possible to achieve an inhibitor capable of competing with the one present in the crystal structure of the enzyme, which is also its current commercial inhibitor. It is possible to draw some conclusions as to which functional groups interact best with certain residues of the active site. This work was divided into three main sections. The first section, Diabetes, serves as an introduction to what is Diabetes, its symptoms and/or side effects and how caffeoyl quinic acids could be used as a treatment. The second section, Caffeoylquinic acids and their metabolites as inhibitors for Alfa-glucosidase, corresponds to the search through molecular docking of caffeoyl quinic acids as inhibitors for α-glucosidase and what was possible to draw from this search. The last section, In situ design of an inhibitor for α-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.20), corresponds to the in situ drug design study and what it achieved. The representation of each of the molecules used as a ligand can be found in the Annexes.

The natural gas is an alternative source of energy which is found underground in porous and permeable rocks and being associated or not to the oil. Its basic composition includes methane, other hydrocarbon and compounds such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, sulphidric gas, mercaptans, water and solid particles. In this work, the dolomite mineral, a double carbonate of calcium and magnesium whose the chemical formula is CaMg(CO3)2, was evaluated as adsorbent material. The material was characterized by granulometric analysis, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal analysis, specific surface area, porosity, scanning electronic microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. Then the material was functionalized with diethanolamine (dolomite+diethanolamine) and diisopropylamine (dolomite+diisopropylamine). The results indicated that the adsorbents presented appropriate physiochemical characteristics for H2S adsorption. The adsorption tests were accomplished in a system coupled to a gas chromatograph and the H2S monitoring in the output of the system was accomplished by a pulsed flame photometric detector (PFPD). The adsorbents presented a significant adsorption capacity. Among the analyzed adsorbents, the dolomite+diethanolamine presented the best capacity of adsorption. The breakthrough curves obtained proved the efficiency of this process

In the Hydrocarbon exploration activities, the great enigma is the location of the deposits. Great efforts are undertaken in an attempt to better identify them, locate them and at the same time, enhance cost-effectiveness relationship of extraction of oil. Seismic methods are the most widely used because they are indirect, i.e., probing the subsurface layers without invading them. Seismogram is the representation of the Earth s interior and its structures through a conveniently disposed arrangement of the data obtained by seismic reflection. A major problem in this representation is the intensity and variety of present noise in the seismogram, as the surface bearing noise that contaminates the relevant signals, and may mask the desired information, brought by waves scattered in deeper regions of the geological layers. It was developed a tool to suppress these noises based on wavelet transform 1D and 2D. The Java language program makes the separation of seismic images considering the directions (horizontal, vertical, mixed or local) and bands of wavelengths that form these images, using the Daubechies Wavelets, Auto-resolution and Tensor Product of wavelet bases. Besides, it was developed the option in a single image, using the tensor product of two-dimensional wavelets or one-wavelet tensor product by identities. In the latter case, we have the wavelet decomposition in a two dimensional signal in a single direction. This decomposition has allowed to lengthen a certain direction the two-dimensional Wavelets, correcting the effects of scales by applying Auto-resolutions. In other words, it has been improved the treatment of a seismic image using 1D wavelet and 2D wavelet at different stages of Auto-resolution. It was also implemented improvements in the display of images associated with breakdowns in each Auto-resolution, facilitating the choices of images with the signals of interest for image reconstruction without noise. The program was tested with real data and the results were good
