EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): Large-scale changes in the growth and decay of land plants can be deduced from trends in the concentration of atmospherics [sic] carbon dioxide, after removing signals in the recorded data caused by oceanic and industrial disturbances to the concentration.

Size variation, growth, condition index and spawning periodicities of three species of molluscs were studied for a period of 15 months from a polluted and a relatively clean marine habitat near Bombay, Maharashtra, India. Growth of Saccostrea cucullata was 1.2 times and of Cerithium rubus was 1.6 times higher in unpolluted habitat than the polluted water. Spawning was during premonsoon in S. cucullata, post monsoon in C. rubus and monsoon in Tellina angulata. Condition index and percentage edibility values were higher at less polluted stations.

Diatoms are the preferred live food of the protozoea stages of prawns. Due to seasonal variations, it is difficult to obtain continuous supply of diatoms and other algae throughout the year. Therefore mass culture of diatoms is necessary. At attempt was made to culture planktonic diatoms and to study the effect of Allen and Nelson media, Simon media, Vitamin B12 and treated sewage water media on their growth and survival. Navicula sp showed better growth in Allen and Nelson media, Coscinodiscus and Chaetoceros grew better in Simon media while Navicula sp and Coscinodiscus sp showed better growth in the combination of Allen and Nelson + Vitamin B12.

The presence of even very minute quantities of pollutants may become harmful either due to their direct effect on zooplankton or indirectly due to the transfer of the pollutants to other trophic levels through zooplankton. The recent trend in marine pollution studies is therefore to find out the effects of very minute quantities of these pollutants on marine zooplankton and the methods of their accumulation and transfer to the organisms of higher trophic level including man. A review of laboratory and field studies concerning the effects of pollutants such as hydrocarbons, crude oil, heavy metals, pesticides and heated waste water on the survival, breeding, movement, faecal pellet production, growth and development on marine zooplankton is presented.

A 10-weeks culture trial of mud crab, Scylla serrata in brackish water earthen pond was conducted in different stocking densities. The aim of the experiment was to identify a suitable stocking density for optimum production. There were three treatment as 5000 crab lings/ha, 10000 crab lings/ha and 15000 crab lings/ha of each with three replications. The initial mean weight of crab lings were same (5.5 ± 0.13 g). The experimental month was June '95 to August '95. The size of each pond was 500 m². To maintain good water quality water was exchanged in every spring tide. The salinity during the experiment were 2-18ppt. Prepared feed of about 32% protein consisting fish meal, MOC rice bran and wheat flour was used at 5% of their body weight. In terms of production, survival rate, growth and carapace width, the stocking density having 10000/ha showed the best (Pand 15000/ha.

Growth and mortality rate of Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus) under five different dietary conditions were studied in fifteen floating net cages in ponds of the Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus, Mymensingh. Growth rate was found to vary under different dietary conditions. The feed with mixture of 25% rice bran, 5% wheat bran, 30% linseed oil cake and 40% water hyacinth leaf meal exhibited the highest growth rate. The gain of log of body weight per unit increase of log of total length was significant. Significant survivals of the fishes were found.

Some aspects of association and development of the caryophyllid cestode Lytocestus indicus Moghe, 1925 infecting the catfish Clarias batrachus (Linn.) from the Kailla Beel of Mymensingh, Bangladesh were studied. About 33.14% of Clarias batrachus were infected with a mean intensity of 3.75, mean density 1.25. The infection was not found throughout the year. Two seasonal occurrence of this cestode were observed, one in April-May and the other in August-September. However, maturation period of the worm coincided with the maturation of the host. The worm was found attached to the wall of the intestine of the host. At the site of attachment tissue layers were compressed due to mechanical injuries. Prevalence and mean intensity of infection increased with length groups. No variation in infection was significantly observed in different sexes of the host examined.

The effect of introduction of mola (Amblypharyngodon mala) in polyculture with rohu (Labeo rohita), catla (Catla catla) and mirror carp (Cyprinus carpio var. specularis) was studied in semi-intensive culture system in the pond complex of the Fisheries Faculty, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Mala, a small indigenous fish was found to exert a negative impact on growth and production of carps. After four months' rearing, significant difference (P<0.05) was observed in the net production between the treatments.
