A steel ball was slid on a steel flat lubricated by molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) particles suspended in hexadecane oil at 150 degrees C. The friction data is compared with that obtained when the ball was slid on the flat sprayed apriori with nominally dry MoS2 particles. The friction in the dry experiment was found to increase with temperature while the friction in wet condition was found to decrease with increasing temperature. Micro-Raman and Fourier transform IR spectroscopy are used to explore the roles of environmental moisture and chemical degradation of oil on the formation of antifriction film on the steel substrate.

A cationic monomer 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride was polymerized using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as the crosslinker to obtain a cationic superabsorbent polymer (SAP). This SAP was characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, and the equilibrium swelling capacity was determined by swelling in water. The SAP was subjected to cyclic swelling/deswelling in water and NaCl solution. The conductivity of the swelling medium was monitored during the swelling/deswelling and was related to the swelling/deswelling characteristics of the SAP. The adsorption of five anionic dyes of different classes on the SAP was carried out and was found to follow the first-order kinetics. The Langmuir adsorption isotherms were found to fit the equilibrium adsorption data. The dye adsorption capacity of the SAP synthesized in this study was higher than that obtained for other hydrogels reported in the literature. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Levy flights can be described using a Fokker-Planck equation, which involves a fractional derivative operator in the position coordinate. Such an operator has its natural expression in the Fourier domain. Starting with this, we show that the solution of the equation can be written as a Hamiltonian path integral. Though this has been realized in the literature, the method has not found applications as the path integral appears difficult to evaluate. We show that a method in which one integrates over the position coordinates first, after which integration is performed over the momentum coordinates, can be used to evaluate several path integrals that are of interest. Using this, we evaluate the propagators for (a) free particle, (b) particle subjected to a linear potential, and (c) harmonic potential. In all the three cases, we have obtained results for both overdamped and underdamped cases. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.86.061105

We address the reconstruction problem in frequency-domain optical-coherence tomography (FDOCT) from under-sampled measurements within the framework of compressed sensing (CS). Specifically, we propose optimal sparsifying bases for accurate reconstruction by analyzing the backscattered signal model. Although one might expect Fourier bases to be optimal for the FDOCT reconstruction problem, it turns out that the optimal sparsifying bases are windowed cosine functions where the window is the magnitude spectrum of the laser source. Further, the windowed cosine bases can be phase locked, which allows one to obtain higher accuracy in reconstruction. We present experimental validations on real data. The findings reported in this Letter are useful for optimal dictionary design within the framework of CS-FDOCT. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

We study the nature of quiet-Sun oscillations using multi-wavelength observations from TRACE, Hinode, and SOHO. The aim is to investigate the existence of propagating waves in the solar chromosphere and the transition region by analyzing the statistical distribution of power in different locations, e.g. in bright magnetic (network), bright non-magnetic and dark non-magnetic (inter-network) regions, separately. We use Fourier power and phase-difference techniques combined with a wavelet analysis. Two-dimensional Fourier power maps were constructed in the period bands 2 -aEuro parts per thousand 4 minutes, 4 -aEuro parts per thousand 6 minutes, 6 -aEuro parts per thousand 15 minutes, and beyond 15 minutes. We detect the presence of long-period oscillations with periods between 15 and 30 minutes in bright magnetic regions. These oscillations were detected from the chromosphere to the transition region. The Fourier power maps show that short-period powers are mainly concentrated in dark regions whereas long-period powers are concentrated in bright magnetic regions. This is the first report of long-period waves in quiet-Sun network regions. We suggest that the observed propagating oscillations are due to magnetoacoustic waves, which can be important for the heating of the solar atmosphere.

A newly implemented G-matrix Fourier transform (GFT) (4,3)D HC(C)CH experiment is presented in conjunction with (4,3)D HCCH to efficiently identify H-1/C-13 sugar spin systems in C-13 labeled nucleic acids. This experiment enables rapid collection of highly resolved relay 4D HC(C)CH spectral information, that is, shift correlations of C-13-H-1 groups separated by two carbon bonds. For RNA, (4,3)D HC(C)CH takes advantage of the comparably favorable 1'- and 3'-CH signal dispersion for complete spin system identification including 5'-CH. The (4,3)D HC(C)CH/HCCH based strategy is exemplified for the 30-nucleotide 3'-untranslated region of the pre-mRNA of human U1A protein.

In this work, Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorings/nanorods and Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites have been prepared through a facile hydrothermal route in acidic medium at 200 degrees C for 2 days. The hydrothermally derived products have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical discharge-charge cycling in lithium ion battery. XRD pattern exhibits the layered structure of Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O and the composite shows the presence of RGO at 2 theta = 25.8 degrees. FTIR spectrum shows that the band at 760 cm(-1) could be assigned to a V-OH2 stretching mode due to coordinated water. Raman spectrum shows that the band at 264 cm(-1) is due to the presence of water molecules between the layers. FESEM/TEM micrographs reveal that the products consist of nanorings of inner diameter 5 mu m and thickness of the ring is found to be 200-300 nm. Addition of exfoliated graphene oxide (EGO) destroys the formation of rings. The reduction of EGO sheets into RGO is also evidenced by the red shift of the absorbance peak from 228 nm to 264 nm. In this composite Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorods may adhere to the surface of RGO and/or embedded in the RGO nanosheets. As a result, an effective three-dimensional conducting network was formed by bridging RGO nanosheets, which can facilitate electron transport effectively and thus improve the kinetics and rate performance of Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorings/nanorods. The Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O/RGO composites exhibited a discharge capacity of 340 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 0.1 mA g(-1) and also an improved cyclic stability. RGO plays a `flexible confinement' function to enwrap Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorods, which can compensate for the volume change and prevent the detachment and agglomeration of pulverized Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O, thus extending the cycling life of the electrode. A probable reaction mechanism for the formation of Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorings is also discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of Pr3+ (1-9 mol%) doped CdSiO3 nanophosphors have been prepared for the first time by a low temperature solution combustion method using oxalyldihydrizide (ODH) as a fuel. The final product was characterized by Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The average crystallite size was calculated using Debye-Scherrer's formula and Williamson-Hall (W-H) plots and found to be in the range 31-37 nm. The optical energy band gap (E-g) of undoped for Pr3+ doped samples were estimated from Tauc relation which varies from 5.15-5.36 eV. Thermoluminescence (TL) properties of Pr3+ doped CdSiO3 nanophosphor has been investigated using gamma-irradiation in the dose range 1-6 kGy at a heating rate of 5 degrees C s(-1). The phosphor shows a well resolved glow peak at similar to 171 degrees C along with shouldered peak at 223 degrees C in the higher temperature side. It is observed that TL intensity increase with increase of Pr3+ concentration. Further, the TL intensity at 171 degrees C is found to be increase linearly with increase in gamma-dose which is highly useful in radiation dosimetry. The kinetic parameters such as activation energy (E), frequency factor (s) and order of kinetics was estimated by Luschiks method and the results are discussed. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Solid-state polymer electrolytes possess high conductivity and have advantages compared with their liquid counterparts. The polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based polymer is a good candidate for this purpose. The PEO/SnCl2/polyaniline composite (PSP composites) at different weight percentages were prepared in anhydrous acetonitrile media. Structural studies were carried out of the prepared composites by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy, and surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy. The sigma (dc) was carried out by a two-probe method, and it is found that the conductivity increases with an increase in temperature. The temperature-dependent conductivity of the composites exhibits a typical semi-conducting behavior and hence can be explained by the 1D variable range hopping model proposed by Mott. The electrochemical cell parameters for battery applications at room temperature have also been determined. The samples are fabricated for battery application in the configuration of Na: (PSP): (I-2 + C + sample), and their experimental data are measured using Wagner's polarization technique. The cell parameters result in an open-circuit voltage of 0.83 V and a short-circuit current of 912 mu A for PSP (70:30:10) composite. Hence, these composites can be used in polymer electrolyte studies.

In this communication, we report the synthesis and characterisation of a new luminescent liquid crystalline material, 4,6-bis (4-butoxyphenyl)-2-methoxynicotinonitrile (3). We have confirmed its structure by Fourier transform infrared and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, elemental analysis and X-ray single crystal diffraction studies. The newly synthesised compound crystallises in a monoclinic system with the space group C2/c and its cell parameters are found to be a?=?25.181(4) angstrom, b?=?15.651(4)angstrom, c?=?12.703(19) angstrom, V?=?4880.4 (16) angstrom, Z?=?8. The results indicate that the presence of weak CH center dot center dot center dot O and CH center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonding as short-range intermolecular interactions are responsible for the formation of its crystal assembly. The measured torsion angle shows the existence of a distorted structure for the molecule wherein 4-butoxyphenylene ring substituent at the fourth position of the central pyridine ring forms a torsion angle chiC(4), C(3), C(10), C(19)] of 40.55 degrees. Its liquid crystalline behaviour was investigated with the aid of polarised optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The study reveals that the compound displays a broad nematic phase in the range of 78112 degrees C. Further, solution phase optical studies indicate that it is a blue light emitter in different non-polar and polar organic solvents at a concentration of 10-5M.

We address the problem of phase retrieval, which is frequently encountered in optical imaging. The measured quantity is the magnitude of the Fourier spectrum of a function (in optics, the function is also referred to as an object). The goal is to recover the object based on the magnitude measurements. In doing so, the standard assumptions are that the object is compactly supported and positive. In this paper, we consider objects that admit a sparse representation in some orthonormal basis. We develop a variant of the Fienup algorithm to incorporate the condition of sparsity and to successively estimate and refine the phase starting from the magnitude measurements. We show that the proposed iterative algorithm possesses Cauchy convergence properties. As far as the modality is concerned, we work with measurements obtained using a frequency-domain optical-coherence tomography experimental setup. The experimental results on real measured data show that the proposed technique exhibits good reconstruction performance even with fewer coefficients taken into account for reconstruction. It also suppresses the autocorrelation artifacts to a significant extent since it estimates the phase accurately.

The combustion synthesis has been utilized to prepare nanophased powders of cobalt spinel ferrite using ODH and glycine fuels. The product was characterized by X‐ray diffraction; Fourier transformed spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV‐Vis absorption etc. The XRD patterns reveal spinal cubic structure. SEM profiles show the product is porous, agglomeration, irregular in shape. The crystallite size was estimated using Scherer’s formula and W‐H plots and show nano in size (13 nm: ODH & 36 nm: Glycine). The UV‐Vis absorption shows at ∼430 nm in both the samples.

An energy-spectrum bottleneck, a bump in the turbulence spectrum between the inertial and dissipation ranges, is shown to occur in the nonturbulent, one-dimensional, hyperviscous Burgers equation and found to be the Fourier-space signature of oscillations in the real-space velocity, which are explained by boundary-layer-expansion techniques. Pseudospectral simulations are used to show that such oscillations occur in velocity correlation functions in one- and three-dimensional hyperviscous hydrodynamical equations that display genuine turbulence. Compressive Sensing (CS) is a new sensing paradigm which permits sampling of a signal at its intrinsic information rate which could be much lower than Nyquist rate, while guaranteeing good quality reconstruction for signals sparse in a linear transform domain. We explore the application of CS formulation to music signals. Since music signals comprise of both tonal and transient nature, we examine several transforms such as discrete cosine transform (DCT), discrete wavelet transform (DWT), Fourier basis and also non-orthogonal warped transforms to explore the effectiveness of CS theory and the reconstruction algorithms. We show that for a given sparsity level, DCT, overcomplete, and warped Fourier dictionaries result in better reconstruction, and warped Fourier dictionary gives perceptually better reconstruction. “MUSHRA” test results show that a moderate quality reconstruction is possible with about half the Nyquist sampling.

We present a novel approach to represent transients using spectral-domain amplitude-modulated/frequency -modulated (AM-FM) functions. The model is applied to the real and imaginary parts of the Fourier transform (FT) of the transient. The suitability of the model lies in the observation that since transients are well-localized in time, the real and imaginary parts of the Fourier spectrum have a modulation structure. The spectral AM is the envelope and the spectral FM is the group delay function. The group delay is estimated using spectral zero-crossings and the spectral envelope is estimated using a coherent demodulator. We show that the proposed technique is robust to additive noise. We present applications of the proposed technique to castanets and stop-consonants in speech.
