A public sector scale for codes of ethics classification

This article examines the results of a study conducted of the top 100 public sector units in Sweden. These units comprise 40 entities of government, 40 municipalities, and 20 county councils. The aim of the study was to examine and describe the codes of ethics in these Swedish public sector units. This research reports on the responses of 27 public sector units that possessed a code of ethics. The principal contribution of this work is a customized PUB SEC-scale to measure and evaluate the content of codes of ethics artefacts in public sector units. The PUB SEC-scale differs to a large extent from the current private sector-scales (PRlSEC-scales) in literature, due to the specific characteristics of the public sector.

At the limits : postcolonial and hyperreal translations of Australian poetry

This dissertation employs the methodologies of postcolonial theory and hyperreal theory (following Baudrillard), in order to investigate articulations of identity, nation and representation in contemporary Australian poetry. Informed by a comparative analysis of contemporary Latin American poetry and cultural theory (in translation), as a means of re-examining the Australian context, this dissertation develops a new transnational model of Australian poetics. The central thesis of this dissertation is that contemporary Australian poetry engages with the postcolonial at its limits. That is, at those sites of postcoloniality that are already mapped by theory, but also at those that occur beyond postcolonial theory. The hyperreal is understood as one such limit, traceable within the poetry but silenced in conventional postcolonial theory. As another limit to the postcolonial, this dissertation reads Latin American poetry and theory, in whose texts postcolonial theory is actively resisted, but where postcolonial and hyperreal poetics nevertheless intersect. The original critical context constructed by this dissertation enables a new set of readings of Australian identity through its poetry. Within this new interpretative context, the readings of contemporary Australian poetry articulate a psycho-social postcoloniality; offer a template for future transactions between national poetry and global politics; and develop a model of the postcolonial hyperreal.

In this intriguing and witty survey, Paul Carter tours the cultural history of agoraphobia. By analyzing the way people have negotiated open spaces from Greek and Roman times to the present day, he finds that "space fear" ultimately results from the inhibition of movement, and shows how this discovery can provide lessons for today’s urban planners and architects. Along the way, he asks why Freud repressed his agoraphobia, and examines the work of various theorists including Le Corbusier, Benjamin, and R.D. Laing, as well as artists such as Munch, Lapique, and Giacometti.

The thesis combines a novel and a critical essay. The novel tells of a group of people in Melbourne, some of whom write, party, have sex, take drugs, go climbing and die. The essay discusses four aspects of the novel: climbing fiction, Nietzsche in literature, place and fiction and character as hero.

Radicalising Medeas : Euripidean mobilisations of maternal infanticide

The thesis argues that the representation of divinely sanctioned infanticide in Euripides' Medea enables an oppositional voice that politicises the definitions of the rights-bearing individual, particularly in terms of cultural and sexual difference. Modern Medeas mobilise the Euripidean motif to construct, and render radical their respective anti-imperial and feminist politics.

This thesis researched the idea that mythic patterns continue to exist beneath everyday consciousness. The creative component outlines an example of archetypical symbols as they surface in the life of a protagonist, while the philosophical exegesis points toward an intellectual framework that supports its mythopoeic conjectures.

Writing across boundaries

This thesis examines a range of recent Australian fiction written in a magical realist mode. It uses the work of Russian literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin to foreground the cross-cultural dialogues represented in these narratives, and it reads these dialogues in the context of contemporary negotiations of cultural difference in Australia.
