Cancer is a multi-factorial disease linked with different initiating causes, cofactors and promoters, and several types of cellular damage. Advancing knowledge on the cellular and molecular biology of the processes that regulate cell proliferation, cell differentiation and cellular responses to external signals, has provided a wealth of information about the cancer cell and how it differs from a normal one. These findings make available a number of potential targets for new therapeutic approaches. The Medicinal Chemistry artwork performed so far in the development of selective and potent adenosine receptor A3 ligands, a current cancer target, will be highlighted in this work.

Agrochemicals constitute the class of products most commonly found in water resources. Their high level of concentration is due to the fact that less than 0.1% of pesticides applied to crops reach their target. The present work aims to study the sorption of clomazone herbicide (associated or not with nanoparticles). The sorption tests, performed with the 2(4) factorial design, showed that the form of herbicide is the main factor for sorption of clomazone. The application of nanoparticles as delivery system for agrochemicals is a pressing area of study and can contribute for decrease in effects of clomazone in the environment.

In this study, polymeric nanocapsules of PCL containing the herbicide atrazine were prepared. In order to optimize the preparation conditions, a 2³ factorial design was performed using different formulations of nanocapsules, which investigated the influence of three variables at two levels. The factors varied were the quantities of PCL, Span 60 and Myritol. The results were evaluated considering the size, polydispersity, zeta potential and association rate and the measures of these parameters were taken immediately after preparation and after 30 days of preparation. The formulations with minimum level of polymer in the preparation showed better stability results.

This work applied a 2² factorial design to the optimization of the extraction of seven elements (calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, copper and manganese) in brachiaria leaves, determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The factors sample mass and digestion type were evaluated at two levels: 200/500 mg, and dry/wet, respectively. Principal component analysis allowed simultaneous discrimination of all the significant effects in one biplot. Wet digestion and mass of 200 mg were considered the best conditions. The decrease of 60% in sample mass allowed to save costs and reagents. The method was validated through the estimation of figures of merit.

Electrocoagulation/flotation process was applied to treat biodiesel wastewater using aluminium electrodes. Firstly, a literature survey was conducted to choose the process variables and then, operational parameters including initial pH, electrode distance and reaction time were tested. Experimental results showed the best parameter that can be used in a factorial design for further studies. The results indicate that electrocoagulation/flotation is very efficient to reduce oil and grease, the effluent was very clear after treatment and small amount of sludge was produced.

The performance of inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometers with axial and radial views for determination of iodine in table salt was evaluated. Interference and memory effects in nitric acid and water-soluble tertiary amines (CFA-C) media were studied. Based on a factorial experiment, one optimum instrument operational condition for axial configuration, and two optima conditions for radial configuration was established. The ICP OES with axial view was 5-fold more sensitive than the radial view. Both matrix matching and standard addition methods were used for iodine quantification and for most samples, both strategies of calibration led to similar results. Recoveries ranged from 104 to 114%.

This work used green coconut mesocarp as a bioadsorbent to remove Reactive Gray BF-2R dye. A 2³ factorial design was used to evaluate the influence of the variables adsorbent mass, particle size and stirring speed on the adsorptive process. Kinetic and adsorption equilibrium studies were performed. Results showed that the kinetic equilibrium was reached after 150 min. Using the Langmuir model, a q max of 21.9 mg g-1 and k of 0.30 L g-1 was obtained. The mesocarp of coconut, a residue of agribusiness, proved to be an effective alternative technique for the removal of dye in this study.

ABSTRACT Montmorillonite was modified with zirconium polyoxycations in the presence of ammonium sulphate. The material was characterized and used as a catalyst in the esterification of lauric acid, the reactions being accompanied by 2³ factorial design. Conversions of up to 95.33 and 83.35% were observed for the methyl and ethyl esterification reactions respectively, proving superior to results obtained by thermal conversion. The material was submitted to three reaction cycles and similar conversions were observed, indicating the catalyst is not significantly deactivated after reuse. The catalyst was also tested under reflux conditions, yielding a maximum conversion of 36.86%.

The present study was carried out to establish the optimal conditions for performing ochratoxin A (OTA) and citrinin (CIT) extraction using the QuEChERS method in rice. Employing the factorial experimental design, variables that significantly influenced the extraction stages were determined. The following variables were analyzed: addition of water, acidification of acetonitrile with glacial acetic acid, as well as amounts of magnesium sulfate, sodium acetate, sodium citrate and diatomaceous earth. The best combining procedure resulted in a predictive model using more water and less diatomaceous earth. Recoveries of CIT and OTA were 78-105%.

A full two-level factorial design was employed to study the influence of PEG molar mass (MM PEG), PEG concentration (C PEG) and phosphate concentration (C PHOSPH) on proteases partition by Lentinus citrinus DPUA 1535 in a PEG/phosphate aqueous two-phase system (ATPS). For all ATPS studied, proteases partitioned for the top phase and the best proteases extraction condition was obtained with MM PEG = 6000 g mol-1, C PEG = 17.5% (w/w) and C PHOSPH = 25% (w/w) with (1.1) purification factor and (151%) activity yield. Findings reported here demonstrate a practical strategy that serves as a first step for proteases purification from crude extract by L. citrinus.

The self-aggregation of pheophytin, a possible photosensitizer for Photodynamic Therapy, is solved by formulation in polymeric surfactant as P-123. The photosensitizer incorporation was found to be time dependent, exhibiting two steps: a partition at the micellar interface followed by an incorporation into the micelle core. The photodynamic efficiency of the formulation was tested by the bioassays against Artemia salina. In order to evaluate how the experimental parameters: pheophytin concentration, P-123 percentage and illumination time influenced the death of artemia, the factorial design 2³ was chosen. The illumination time was found to be the main factor contributing to the mortality of artemia.

The application of Lipozyme (Termomyces lanuginosus) immobilized in gelatin gel in aliphatic ester synthesis was investigated taking the esterification of hexanoic acid with n-butanol as a model reaction. Conditions were optimized by factorial design and the highest conversion was obtained under the following conditions: molar ratio alcohol: acid of 2:1, reaction time of 48 h and biocatalyst weight of 7.0 g. Under these conditions the esterification yield was around 98 %. The operational stability of the immobilized lipase was assessed and results showed that after 12 batch runs, the enzyme showed no significant loss of activity.

In this study, a method for determination of hexavalent chromium in aqueous samples using liquid-liquid microextraction (LLME) and detection by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (F AAS) was developed. The LLME procedure was based on the extraction of Cr (VI) by acetone at a sample pH of 1.2. The use of saturated ammonium sulphate solution allowed effective separation of the aqueous and organic phases and acetone extracted chromium. The sample pH, acetone volume and stirring time were optimized by a full factorial design.

The aim of this work was to verify the ability of enzymatic crude extract from dormant castor bean seeds to yield concentrated fatty acids by hydrolysis of polyunsaturated vegetable oils such as corn and sunflower. The enzymatic extract exhibited higher activity towards corn oil, which was selected for further studies to determine optimum hydrolysis conditions by factorial design. Maximum hydrolysis percentage (≈84%) was reached at 60% wt. oil:buffer acetate 100 mM pH 4.5, 33 ºC and 5.0% wt. of crude extract after 70 min of reaction. These results suggest that the use of low-cost lipase from castor bean seeds has potential for oil hydrolysis.

A simple procedure based on stir bar sorptive extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet/photodiode array detection (SBSE/LC-UV/PAD) to determine intermediates and by-products of esfenvalerate is described. The influence of organic modifier, ionic strength, extraction time, temperature and pH were simultaneously evaluated by using a factorial experimental design. The utilization of different organic solvents and desorption times were also investigated to establish the optimal conditions for SBSE liquid desorption. Among the ten different peaks (intermediates and by-products) detected after degradation of esfenvalerate, eight (including 3-phenoxybenzoic acid and 3-phenoxybenzaldehyde) were successfully extracted by SBSE under the optimized conditions.
