Review of semiochemicals that mediate the oviposition of mosquitoes: a possible sustainable tool for the control and monitoring of Culicidae

The choice for suitable places for female mosquitoes to lay eggs is a key-factor for the survival of immature stages (eggs and larvae). This knowledge stands out in importance concerning the control of disease vectors. The selection of a place for oviposition requires a set of chemical, visual, olfactory and tactile cues that interact with the female before laying eggs, helping the localization of adequate sites for oviposition. The present paper presents a bibliographic revision on the main aspects of semiochemicals in regard to mosquitoes' oviposition, aiding the comprehension of their mechanisms and estimation of their potential as a tool for the monitoring and control of the Culicidae.

Ghilianella beckeri sp. nov. of Emesinae from Brazil (Hemiptera, Reduviidae)

Ghilianella beckeri n. sp. of Emesinae from Rondônia State, Brazil is described. The most similar species to G. beckeri sp. nov. is G. approximata (McAtee & Malloch 1925). Males of G . beckeri n. sp. can be separated from G. approximata because the latter has: (1) seventh tergite much shorter, slightly surpassing pygophore, and not wrinkled; (2), bifurcated medial posterior process of the pygophore; and (3) parameres without spines. Females of G. approximata can be distinguished from those of G . beckeri n. sp. since they have: (1) the expansions of the fifth abdominal tergum distinctly within lateral margins of disk; (2) the seventh tergite longer than wide; and (3) the eighth tergite semicircular and lightly carinate medially.

New species of Hymenoepimecis Viereck (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae, Pimplinae) from Brazilian Atlantic forest

In this study three new Brazilian species of Hymenoepimecis are described and illustrated. The specimens were collected using sweeping the vegetation and Malaise traps in areas of Atlantic forest in southeastern Brazil. The material described is figured with digital images.

Morfologia comparada da genitália masculina de Galerucini (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Galerucinae)

A morfologia da genitália, especialmente a do macho, tem sido muito utilizada para elucidar problemas taxonômicos e evolutivos de crisomelídeos e paticularmente em Galerucini. Nesta contribuição, representantes de gêneros de Galerucini das subtribos que ocorrem nas Regiões Neotropical e Neártica foram selecionados para estudo. Descrições comparativas e ilustrações da genitália masculina são apresentadas para as espécies: Coelomera lanio (Dalman, 1823) e Dircema nigripenne (Fabricius, 1792) (Subtribo Galerucina); Exora encaustica (Germar, 1824) e Uaupesia amazona (Weise, 1921) (Subtribo Metacyclina); Paranapiacaba teinturieri (Allard, 1894) e Isotes eruptiva (Bechyné, 1955) (Subtribo Luperina). O spiculum gastrale está presente nas espécies estudadas de Metacyclina e Luperina. No lobo médio, as estruturas basais em forma de gancho direcionadas ventralmente só não ocorrem em P. teinturieri e em I. eruptiva, que possuem um processo em forma de capuz protegendo o orifício basal. A fenestra sub-basal é observada em C. lanio e em U. amazona; o flagellum, um esclerito do saco interno, ocorre somente em U. amazona. O conhecimento da morfologia da genitália masculina em Galerucini ainda é incipiente e deve ser ampliado, com a inclusão de inúmeros gêneros ainda não estudados.

New species and records of Chimarra Stephens (Trichoptera, Philopotamidae) from Central Amazonia, Brazil

Chimarra (Curgia) paucispina sp. nov., of the aurivittata group Flint, 1998 is described and illustrated from specimens collected in Amazonas State. The key to species of Chimarra (Curgia) Walker, 1860 presented by Flint was modified to include the new species. Chimarra (Chimarrita) chela Blahnik, 1997 and Chimarra (Curgia) jugescens Flint, 1998 are for first time reported for the Amazonas State. This is the first record of C. chela in Brazil.

Nove espécies são transferidas de Portanus Ball, 1932 para Paraportanus gen. nov.: Paraportanus longicornis (Osborn, 1923) comb. nov. = Portanus chelatus DeLong, 1976 syn. nov.; Paraportanus elegans (Kramer, 1961) comb. nov.; Paraportanus facetus (Kramer, 1961) comb. nov.; Paraportanus eburatus (Kamer, 1964) comb. nov.; Paraportanus filamentus (DeLong, 1980) comb. nov.; Paraportanus bicornis (Carvalho & Cavichioli, 2003) comb. nov.; Paraportanus bimaculatus (Carvalho & Cavichioli, 2003) comb. nov.; Paraportanus cinctus (Carvalho & Cavichioli, 2003) comb. nov.; Paraportanus variatus (Carvalho & Cavichioli, 2003) comb. nov.. Novos dados de distribuição geográfica são registrados para: P. facetus; P. elegans e P. longicornis. Chave para identificação das espécies é apresentada.

Catalogue of type specimens of the Collection of Invertebrates of Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia, Manaus, Brazil. III. Hexapoda: Isoptera, Mantodea, Mecoptera, Orthoptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera and Zoraptera

A catalogue of the type specimens of Isoptera, Mantodea, Mecoptera, Orthoptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera, and Zoraptera deposited in the Invertebrate Collection of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA), Manaus, Brazil, is presented and updated to December, 2007. A total of eight holotypes and seven lots of paratypes of nine species of Isoptera; three holotypes and one paratype of three species of Mantodea; five holotypes and five lots of paratypes of five species of Mecoptera; eight holotypes and five lots of paratypes of eleven species of Orthoptera; three holotypes, three neotypes and two lots of paratypes of seven species of Plecoptera; six holotypes and seven lots of paratypes of ten species of Trichoptera; and two holotypes and three lots of paratypes of three species of Zoraptera, are listed. Specific names are listed alphabetically within the family, followed by bibliographic citation, original genus name, status of type, collection number, locality data and remarks when appropriate.

Description of Coctilelater minimus sp. nov. (Coleoptera, Elateridae, Agrypninae)

Coctilelater minimus from Brazil (Pará) is described and illustrated. This new species is mainly characterized by small size and coloration pattern.

A new genus and species of gall midge (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) associated with Myrcia retorta (Myrtaceae)

Brethesia Maia, new genus and Brethesia myrciae Maia, new species of Cecidomyiidae are described and illustrated (male, female, pupa and gall) based on material collected in Minas Gerais (Brazil). This new species induces leaf galls on Myrcia retorta (Myrtaceae).

Uma nova espécie de Cladomorphus Gray, 1835 (Phasmatidae, Cladomorphinae) de Minas Gerais, Brasil

Cladomorphus trimariensis sp. nov. é descrita de Três Marias, Minas Gerais. A nova espécie difere de C. phyllinus Gray, 1835 principalmente pelo opérculo e placa micropilar do ovo, ausência de espinhos nas pernas médias e posteriores e pelas projeções distais nos tergos IV e V, que são menos desenvolvidas.

Metapyrophorus pharolim a new genus and species of Pyrophorini (Coleoptera, Elateridae, Agrypninae)

Metapyrophorus, a new monotypic genus, is erected based on M. pharolim, new species from Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. The genus is characterized mainly by its pair of convex pronotal bioluminescent organs, equidistant between the median line and the lateral margin.

Nota sinonímica em Chinaia Bruner & Metcalf (Hemiptera, Cicadellidae, Neocoelidiinae)

Uma nova sinonímia é proposta: Chinaia caprella Kramer, 1958 = Neocoelidiana chlorata DeLong & Kolbe, 1975 syn. nov. A espécie é redescrita e ilustrada.

A new species of Dicrepidius Eschscholtz from Brazil and new records for D. ramicornis (Palisot de Beauvois) (Coleoptera, Elateridae, Elaterinae)

Dicrepidius brasilianus sp. nov., from Pará and Mato Grosso is described and illustrated. This is the second species of this genus recorded from Brazil. D. ramicornis (Palisot de Beauvois, 1805) is widely distributed from south of United States to south of Brazil. From Brazil, it was recorded from Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Santa Catarina states, but now other records are included. A comparison between the two Brazilian species and a discussion, including intraspecific variations, are presented.
