We investigated the mechanisms of the alterations in sensitivity to catecholamines in right atria from female rats exhibiting regular 4-day estrous cycles after three foot-shock sessions at estrus, metestrus, and diestrus or at diestrus, proestrus, and estrus. Right atria from stressed rats sacrificed at diestrus showed subsensitivity to noradrenaline and adrenaline. After in vitro sympathetic denervation (38 μM 6-hydroxydopamine) plus inhibition of neuronal reuptake (0.1 μM desipramine) subsensitivity to noradrenaline was abolished, but it was again evident when extraneuronal uptake was also inhibited (10 μM phenoxybenzamine and 30 μM corticosterone). The same pretreatment abolished the subsensitivity to adrenaline. After addition of 1 μM butoxamine, a β2-adrenoceptor antagonist, the tissues from stressed rats were subsensitive to adrenaline. Right atria from stressed rats sacrificed at estrus did not show any alteration in sensitivity to catecholamines. We conclude that after foot-shock stress, right atria from female rats sacrificed at diestrus showed subsensitivity of the chronotropic response to catecholamines as a result of a conformational alteration of β1-adrenoceptors, simultaneously with an increase in β2-adrenoceptor-mediated response. The mechanisms seem to be similar to those which underlie stress-induced alterations in catecholamine sensitivity in right atria from male rats. However, during estrus there are some protective factors that prevent the effects of stress on right atria.

The time and the distance traveled during the acceleration and the velocity retaking are parameters used for the comparison and the project of vehicles. In this paper equations for the calculation of those parameters are presented. Several criteria are presented for the shift gears. It is also verified the occurrence or not of total slip during the acceleration of the vehicle. The theoretical models were implemented in a developed computational system. Such system was applied in a Mercedes-Benz do Brazil sample vehicle, in order to facilitate comparisons between the simulate values and the experimental road tests. A study of 215 women from different socioeconomic backgrounds in Botucatu, Brazil, was conducted to reveal possible clues why toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is seldom diagnosed in Brazil. Of the 215 women, 79 were colonized with Staphylococcus aureus either in the nasal passages and/or in the vaginal area, which is comparable to the colonization of individuals in the developed countries Thirteen of the women were colonized with S. aureus that produced toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1), the toxin responsible for the majority of cases of TSS. Eleven strains produced enterotoxin B, the only enterotoxin implicated in TSS, primarily in non-menstrual TSS. Enterotoxin A was produced by 15 strains and is commonly associated with the production of TSST-1, but has not been implicated in TSS. Seven strains produced enterotoxin D and one strain produced enterotoxin C, but these have not been implicated in TSS. Only 9 women used tampons which may be a major reason for the lack of menstrual TSS in Brazil, Only two of the 49 women whose sera were examined for the presence of antibodies to TSST-1 had no or very low antibody titers, the major protection against the development of TSS, both menstrual and non-menstrual TSS. This is a lower percentage than has been observed in the developed countries. Although another possibility for the lack of TSS in Brazil is the failure to recognize the disease, however, the results of this limited study indicate the importance of low usage of tampons and the high percentage of individuals with antibodies to TSST-1. The socioeconomic backgrounds of the participants were of little significance.

We investigate the decay of accelerated protons and neutrons. Calculations are carried out in the inertial and coaccelerated frames. Particle interpretation of these processes are quite different in each frame but the decay rates are verified to agree in both cases. For the sake of simplicity our calculations are performed in a two-dimensional spacetime since our conclusions are not conceptually affected by this. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

This paper deals with the joint economic design of x̄ and R charts when the occurrence times of assignable causes follow Weibull distributions with increasing failure rates. The variable quality characteristic is assumed to be normally distributed and the process is subject to two independent assignable causes (such as tool wear-out, overheating, or vibration). One cause changes the process mean and the other changes the process variance. However, the occurrence of one kind of assignable cause does not preclude the occurrence of the other. A cost model is developed and a non-uniform sampling interval scheme is adopted. A two-step search procedure is employed to determine the optimum design parameters. Finally, a sensitivity analysis of the model is conducted, and the cost savings associated with the use of non-uniform sampling intervals instead of constant sampling intervals are evaluated.

Water waves generated by landslides were long menace in certain localities and the study of this phenomenon were carried out at an accelerated rate in the last decades. Nevertheless, the phase of wave creation was found to be very complex. As such, a numerical model based on Boussinesq equations was used to describe water waves generated by local disturbance. This numerical model takes in account the vertical acceleration of the particles and considers higher orders derivate terms previously neglected by Boussinesq, so that in the generation zone, this model can support high relative amplitude of waves.

This paper describes the ultramorphology and histology of the venom reservoir in 14-day old workers of Apis mellifera, immediately before and after the application of electrical shocks with the object of causing venom elimination and reservoir collapse. The external epithelial surface of the reservoir was differentiated according to its morphological aspects into posterior, median, and proximal or duct regions at the ventral surface and into anterior and posterior regions at the dorsal surface. While the epithelium of the proximal region forms a ventral infolding, a dorsal salience is formed at this region. These structures and the epithelial regions persist both in full and empty reservoirs. The reservoir appeared full and distended before the electrical shocks were applied and became empty and withered afterwards due to the elimination of the secretion, without any reductions in length. Nevertheless, some secretion was kept inside the lumen, thus suggesting a possible role for the reservoir in the modification of the secretion.
