The purpose of this study was to histomorphologically evaluate (in dog's teeth) the influence of tooth movement in the healing of chronic periapical lesions. Thirty roots of incisors and premolars of two dogs (1-year-old) were used in this research. After pulpectomy, the root canals remained exposed to the oral environment for 6 months for achievement of periapical lesions. Twenty root canals were biomechanically prepared and received a calcium hydroxide dressing for 14 days before being filled with gutta-percha points and Sealapex sealer. After root canal treatment, some incisors were submitted to orthodontic movement, whereas the other roots remained without orthodontic movement. The orthodontic appliance was removed at 5 months and 15 days after treatment, the dogs were killed 15 days later and the specimens were prepared for histomorphological analysis. The results showed that the orthodontic movement delayed, but did not hinder, the periapical healing process. (J Endod 2006;32:115-119)

Frequency upconversion luminescence in erbium-doped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2-based transparent glass ceramics (TGC) under 980 nm infrared excitation is investigated. Upconversion emission signals around 410, 525, 550, 660, and 850 nm were generated and identified as due to the H-2(9/2) H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2), and F-4(9/2) transitions to the I-4(15/2) ground-state, and S-4(3/2)-I-4(13/2), respectively. The erbium ions excited-state emitting levels were populated via a combination of stepwise ground-state absorption (GSA), excited-state absorption (ESA), and cross-relaxation processes. The results also disclosed that both blue (410 nm) and red (660 nm) upconversion emission signals in the transparent glass ceramic sample presented twice as much intensity as compared to its vitreous counterpart. The influence of dopants commonly used in SnO2 varistor ceramics, such as CoO, Cr2O3 or Nb2O5, on the structural properties of SnO2 was investigated. Several SnO2-based ceramics containing only one of the dopants were prepared and characterized. Spectroscopic investigations [visible, near infrared (IR) and IR region] were performed to obtain information about dopants valence states inside the ceramics, as well as about their influence on electronic structure of the material. Structural properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and mechanisms of dopant incorporation were proposed. Obtained results were confirmed with results of the electrical measurements. Microstructural changes in doped ceramics were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis that showed great differences in densities, grain size, and morphology of the SnO2 ceramics depending on type of dopants and their distribution. In this study, the effect of bismuth content on the crystal structure, morphology and electric properties of barium-bismuth-tantalate (BBT) ceramics was explored with the aid of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microcopy (SEM), dielectric properties and ferroelectric hysteresis loops. BaBi2Ta2O9 (BBT) ceramics have been successfully prepared by the solid-state reaction. The BBT phase was crystallized at 900 degreesC for 2 h. The excess of bismuth controls the grain size, affecting the density of the material. Measurements of dieletric constant and dieletric losses confirm that the material is a ferroeletric with a Curie temperature around 77 degreesC. The dieletric constant measured at room temperature was 400, with a dielectric loss of 0.03. Both the phase-transition behaviour and ferroelectric properties, such as spontaneous polarization (P-s), showed a dependence on Bi content. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

SnO2-based varistors doped with ZnO and WO3 were prepared by mixed oxide method. Experimental evidence shows that the increase in ZnO amount increases the volume and microstrain of unit cell while the WO3 promotes a decrease. The effect of ZnO and WO3 additives could be explained by the substitution of Sn4+ by Zn2+ and W6+. The addition of WO3 inhibits the grain growth due to the segregation in the grain boundary without influence in the densification of the samples. Besides that, an increase in the electrical resistance of the SnO2-ZnO-WO3 system was observed independent of the WO3 concentration. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Objectives: Iron ions (Fe2+) have been shown to be cariostatic in many studies particularly by their ability to reduce bacterial metabolism. Nevertheless, the role of iron ions on dissolution of enamel is unexplored. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate the protective effect of increasing concentrations (0-120 mmol/L) of Fe2+ on the dissolution of enamel.Design: Enamel powder was subjected to acetic acid made with increasing concentrations with respect to FeSO4 center dot 7H(2)O. In order to determine the amount of enamel dissolved, the phosphate released in the medium was analysed spectrophotometrically using the Fiske-Subarrow method. Data were tested using Kruskall-Wall and Dunn's tests (p < 0.05). The degree of protection was found to approach maximum at about 15 mmol/L Fe2+. Higher concentrations of Fe2+ did not have an extra effect on inhibition of dissolution of enamel powder. In the next step, the protective effect of 15 mmol/L Fe2+ against mineral dissolution of the bovine enamel was evaluated using a simple abiotic model system. Enamel blocks were exposed to a sequence of seven plastic vials, each containing 1 mL of 10 mmol/L acetic acid. The acid in vial 4 was made 15 mmol/L with respect to FeSO4 center dot 7H(2)O. The mineral dissolved during each challenge was thus determined by phosphate released as described above. Data were tested using two-way ANOVA (p < 0.05). Results: Lower demineralisation (around 45%) was found in vial 4 (with Fe) that continued stable until vial 7.Conclusions: Thus, our data suggest that Fe2+, can be effective on inhibition of dissolution of enamel and that this effect may be durable. Pechini's method was used to prepare lead titanate zirconate with Zr/Ti ratio equal to 53/47. X-ray diffraction data revealed the presence of a rhombohedral phase, rich in zirconium, due to difference in carbonate stabilities, in PZT ceramics calcined at 600 degrees C. Infrared spectroscopy presented COO- bonds in the 1400 cm(-1) region, which disappeared after calcining at 700 degrees C. Seeds with rhombohedral (PZT 57/43) or tetragonal structure (PZT 45/55) were added to the precursor. The microstructure was differentially influenced by the nature of seed particles. Rhombohedral nuclei promoted preferential crystallization of lead zirconate. This heterogeneity directly reflected on values of k(p) and d(33). (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. Limited and Techna S.r.l. In this work, the effect of Nb2O5 addition on the microstructure of BaTiO3 was studied. From XRD diagrams, a diminution in tetragonality parameters with an increase in dopant concentration was observed. In order to determine morphology and composition of secondary phases in niobium-doped barium titanate, EDAX and SEM analyses were carried out. It was found that a concentration of dopant higher than 0.15 mol% leads to fine-grained BaTiO3 without abnormal grain growth. Otherwise, compositions of secondary phases correspond to the titanium-rich region in the BaO-TiO2 phase diagram. Besides, the titanium content in the precipitate increases with the Nb2O5 addition. Zirconia-ceria powders with 12 mol % of CeO2 doped with 0.3 mol% of iron, copper, manganese and nickel oxides were synthesized by the conventional mixed oxide method. These systems were investigated with regard to the sinterability and electrical properties. Sintering was studied considering the shrinkage rate, densification, grain size, and phase evolution. Small amount of dopant such as iron reduces sintering temperature by over 150degreesC and more than 98% of tetragonal phase was retained at room temperature in samples sintered at 1450degreesC against 1600degreesC to stabilize the tetragonal phase on pure ZrO2-CeO2 system. The electrical conductivity was measured using impedance spectroscopy and the results were reported. The activation energy values calculated from the Arrhenius's plots in the temperature range of 350-700degreesC for intragrain conductivities are 1.04 eV.

Pure and W-doped PZT ceramics (PZT and PZTW) were prepared by a hybrid process consisting in the association of polymeric precursor and partial oxalate methods. The phase formation was investigated by simultaneous thermal analysis (TG/DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effect of W doping PZT and their electrical properties was evaluated. Substitution of W by Ti leads to an increase of Curie temperature and broadening of dielectric constant. A typical hysteresis loop was observed at room temperature and the remnant polarization was increased with the content of W. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
