The objective of this experiment was to evaluate effects of treatments with intravaginal progesterone (N) device and/or 48 h temporary weaning (TW) on reproductive performance of postpartum anestrous crossbred Angus x Nelore cows, throughout the breeding season (BS). Anestrous cows (n = 296; 53 5 DPP, body condition score between 2.5 and 3.5, on a 1-5 scale) were assigned randomly to four treatments (2 x 2 factorial design): (1) Control Group (no treatment; n = 73); (2) TW Group (48 h TW beginning on day 0 of BS; n = 70); (3) P4 Group (Intravaginal P4 device between days -7 and 0 of BS; n = 73); and (4) P4+TW Group (Intravaginal P4 device between days -7 and 0 of BS followed by 48h TW; n=70). on day 0 of BS (when P4 devices were removed and TW was initiated), cows had their ovaries evaluated by ultrasonography aiming to evaluate size of the largest follicle. Signs of behavioral estrus were observed twice a day (morning and evening), between days 0 and 25 of BS, and cows observed in estrus were inseminated 12 h later. Between days 26 and 80 of BS, cows were submitted to natural service. Pregnancy diagnosis was conducted by transrectal ultrasonography on days 32 and 53 (pregnancies by AI) and 114 (pregnancies by natural service). Rates of detection of estrus during the first 3 days and within 25 days of BS were greater in cows receiving TW (45.0% compared with 9.6% and 50.0% compared with 29.5%, respectively; P < 0.01). Conception rate in cows inseminated in the first 3 days of BS was greater in cows treated with P4 (54.8% compared with 11.1 %; P < 0.01). Combining P4+TW increased pregnancy rate in the first 3 days (Control: 1.4%, TW: 4.3%, P4: 8.2% and P4+TW: 24.3%; P < 0.01) and in 25 days of BS (Control: 10.9%, TW: 7.1%, P4: 13.7% and P4+TW: 28.6%; P < 0.05). Pregnancy rate at the end of BS did not differ among treatment groups. In conclusion, TW alone increased estrous behavior whereas P4 alone benefited conception. Combining P4 with TW improved pregnancy rate with direct benefits to behavioral estrus and conception. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)] and CCK injected into the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) inhibit NaCl and water intake. In this study, we investigated interactions between 5-HT and CCK into the LPBN to control water and NaCl intake. Male Holtzman rats with cannulas implanted bilaterally in the LPBN were treated with furosemide + captopril to induce water and NaCl intake. Bilateral LPBN injections of high doses of the 5-HT antagonist methysergide (4 mug) or the CCK antagonist proglumide (50 mug), alone or combined, produced similar increases in water and 1.8% NaCl intake. Low doses of methysergide (0.5 mug) + proglumide (20 mug) produced greater increases in NaCl intake than when they were injected alone. The 5-HT2a/2c agonist 2,5-dimetoxy-4-iodoamphetamine hydrobromide (DOI; 5 mug) into the LPBN reduced water and NaCl intake. After proglumide (50 mug) + DOI treatment, the intake was not different from vehicle treatment. CCK-8 (1 mug) alone produced no effect. CCK-8 combined with methysergide (4 mug) reduced the effect of methysergide on NaCl intake. The data suggest that functional interactions between 5-HT and CCK in the LPBN may be important for exerting inhibitory control of NaCl intake.

In the present study we compared the effects produced by moxonidine (alpha(2)-adrenoceptor/imidazoline agonist) injected into the 4th cerebral ventricle and into the lateral cerebral ventricle on mean arterial pressure, heart rate and on renal, mesenteric and hindquarter vascular resistances, as well as the possible action of moxonidine on central alpha(1)- or alpha(2)-adrenoceptors to produce cardiovascular responses. Male Holtzman rats (n = 7-8) anesthetized with urethane (0.5 g/kg, intravenously - i.v.) and alpha-chloralose (60 mg/kg, i.v.) were used. Moxonidine (5, 10 and 20 nmol) injected into the 4th ventricle reduced arterial pressure (-19 +/- 5, -30 +/- 7 and -43 +/- 8 mmHg vs. vehicle: 2 +/- 4 mmHg), heart rate (-10 +/- 6, - 16 +/- 7 and -27 +/- 9 beats per minute - bpm, vs. vehicle: 4 +/- 5 bpm), and renal, mesenteric and hindquarter vascular resistances. Moxonidine (5, 10 and 20 nmol) into the lateral ventricle only reduced renal vascular resistance (-77 +/- 17%, - 85 +/- 13%, -89 +/- 10% vs. vehicle: 3 +/- 4%), without changes on arterial pressure, heart rate and mesenteric and hindquarter vascular resistances. Pre-treatment with the selective alpha(2)-adrenoceptor antagonist yohimbine (80, 160 and 320 nmol) injected into the 4th ventricle attenuated the hypotension (-32 +/- 5, -25 +/- 4 and -12 +/- 6 mmHg), bradycardia (-26 +/- 11, -23 +/- 5 and -11 +/- 6 bpm) and the reduction in renal, mesenteric and hindquarter vascular resistances produced by moxonidine (20 nmol) into the 4th ventricle. Pretreatment with yohimbine (320 nmol) into the lateral ventricle did not change the renal vasodilation produced by moxonidine (20 nmol) into the lateral ventricle. The alpha(1)-adrenoceptor antagonist prazosin (320 nmol) injected into the 4th ventricle did not affect the cardiovascular effects of moxonidine. However, prazosin (80, 160 and 320 nmol) into the lateral ventricle abolished the renal vasodilation (-17 +/- 4, -6 +/- 9 and 2 +/- 11%) produced by moxonidine. The results indicate that the decrease in renal vascular resistance due to moxonidine action in the forebrain is mediated by alpha(1)-adrenoceptors, while the cardiovascular effects produced by moxonidine acting in the brainstern depend at least partially on the activation of coadrenoceptors. This study compared the tensile strength and fracture mechanism of tungsten inert gas (TIG) welds in cylindrical rods of commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) with those of laser welds and intact samples. Thirty dumbbell-shaped samples were developed by using brass rods as patterns. The samples were invested in casings, subjected to thermal cycles, and positioned in a plasma arc welding machine under argon atmosphere and vacuum, and titanium was injected under vacuum/pressure. The samples were X-rayed to detect possible welding flaws and randomly assigned to three groups to test the tensile strength and the fracture mechanism: intact, laser welding, and TIG welding. The tensile test results were investigated using ANOVA, which indicated that the samples were statistically similar. The fracture analysis showed that the cpTi samples subjected to laser welding exhibited brittle fracture and those subjected to TIG welding exhibited mixed brittle/ductile fracture with a predominance of ductile fracture with the presence of microcavities and cleavage areas. Intact samples presented the characteristic straightening in the fracture areas, indicating the ductility of the material.

We study solitons in the condensate trapped in a double-well potential with far-separated wells, when the s-wave scattering length has different signs in the two parts of the condensate. By employing the coupled-mode approximation it is shown that there are unusual stable bright solitons in the condensate, with the larger share of atoms being gathered in the repulsive part. Such unusual solitons derive their stability from the quantum tunneling and correspond to the strong coupling between the parts of the condensate. The ground state of the system, however, corresponds to weak coupling between the condensate parts, with the larger share of atoms being gathered in the attractive part of the condensate.
Production of WZ events in pp(-) collisions at root s=1.96 TeV and limits on anomalous WWZ couplings
Resumo:
We present results from a search for WZ production with subsequent decay to l nu l'(l) over bar'(l and l' = e or mu) using 0.30 fb(-1) of data collected by the D0 experiment between 2002 and 2004 at the Fermilab Tevatron. Three events with WZ decay characteristics are observed. With an estimated background of 0.71 +/- 0.08 events, we measure the WZ production cross section to be 4.5(-2.6)(+3.8) pb, with a 95% C.L. upper limit of 13.3 pb. The 95% C.L. limits for anomalous WWZ couplings are found to be -2.0

The chemical and biochemical composition of mango, varies according to the cultivation conditions, variety and maturation state, generally containing a high level of ascorbic acid. In order to establish the correlation between the activity of the ascorbate oxidase [E.C.1.10.3.3], and ascorbic acid level in the ripening process of the Haden mango (Mangífera índica L.), sample of the fruits related to hard green stage (zero), 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 days stored at 20 ± 2oC, were tested. The samples were obtained by cutting small cubes of 8 cm3 from pulps of 8 mangoes with texture without significant difference (p£0.05) at Magness-Taylor pressure tester scale. In each sample the activity of ascorbate oxidase was followed, in order to check its participation in possible substrate losses during the ripening fruits. The ascorbic acid level and sensory profile also was determined periodically during the ripening period. The enzymatic activity was spectrophotometrically determined at 245 nm and 30oC. The ascorbic acid was analyzed according modified AOAC methodology, and sensory analysis by descriptive quantitative analysis. Data were analyzed using correlation analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey's test, principal component analysis and stepwise discriminant analysis. During the ripening, the ascorbate oxidase activity increased (from 0 to 5.0 x 10-1 U/ml) and the ascorbic acid level decreased (from 209.3 mg to 110.0 mg per 100g of pulp), showing a significant (p£0.05) inverse linear correlation (r=-0.98). The descriptors terms for mangoes were: characteristic flavor, characteristic aroma, sourness, astringency, yellow coloration of pulp, sweetness and succulence. The sensory profile presented significant improvement during ripening. All sensory attributes increased significantly (p£0.05) except sourness and astringency, wich decreased during the ripening of mangoes.
